RE-INTRODUCING OUR NEW CHAIR —Dr. Rick Ewing Rick Ewing, the new Chair of the Philadelphia Section, is a Group Director in Cardiovascular Discovery Chemistry at Bristol Myers Squibb in Hopewell, NJ.

Rick grew up in the West Chester, PA area. He received his BS in chemistry from West Chester University in 1983. During his Undergraduate studies, Rick held internships at the Chester County Health Department and at Wyeth Laboratories in Great Valley. Rick then went on to the University of Pennsylvania where he received his PhD in organic chemistry in 1988 working with Professor Madeleine Joullié. While pursuing his PhD, Rick also performed collaborative research with Professor Paul Weisz (Chemical Engineering Department, University of Pennsyl-vania) and Dr. Judah Folkman (Harvard Medical School) in the area of oncology targeting the inhibition of angiogenesis.

Rick began his pharmaceutical career in 1988 with Rhone-Poulenc Rorer then moved to Bristol Myers Squibb in 2000. At BMS, Rick leads a program to treat thrombosis and heart failure. Al-so, Rick is a co-chair of the BMS University Awards and Grants Committee. Rick has been on the organizing committees for several external chemistry symposia in the New Jersey and Phil-adelphia Sections. In addition to his involvement in the local section, Rick is the chair of the Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs (2015 and 2016) and serves on Corporate As-sociates (since 2006). He has served on two ACS presidential task forces: the task force on sup-ply and demand of STEM jobs, and the task force on Chemical Employment. Rick has served on the local section Board of Directors since 2009. He held the chair position in 2012 and as the chair-elect in 2015, and is the first person to hold the chair position twice. Rick has been a member of the local section since 1985.

Rick and his wife Sara live in Lower Bucks County with their two red chow-chows. They have two young adults who both graduated from colleges in Pennsylvania. Rick enjoys bicycling and playing chess.

the Catalyst 2015 proved to be an exciting year for the Section under Chair Bill Smith’s leadership. Particularly noteworthy were the two local Sec-tion meetings held at Solvay and Dow Chemical. These two venues drew over 60 members for each! The Section remains highly grate-ful to these organizations for opening their facilities to us.

The year-end event for the Section was the 26th annual Ullyot Pub-lic Affairs Lectureship held on November 17th at the Chemical Her-itage Foundation. Thanks to the generosity and foresight of Dr.

Glenn and Barbara Ullyot, the endowed lecture continues as a premier event for the Section. There were over 150 people in attendance for the lecture delivered by Professor Bruce M. Alberts, the Chancellor’s Leadership Chair in Biochemistry and Biophysics for Science and Education at the University of California, San Francisco. His talk was entitled Redefining Sci-ence Education. A lively question and answer session followed. More information about the event and a listing of previous lecturers can be found at:

www.chemheritage.org/visit/events/awards/ullyot-public-affairs-lecture.aspx.

The 2016 Ullyot lecturer will be Professor Fraser Stoddart, Northwestern University. Plan to attend, if you can, in November 2016, to enjoy a great lecture, great venue, networking and food. I highly recommend visiting the Chemical Heritage Foundation if your schedule allows.

I am grateful to begin my term as Chair of the Philadelphia Section and I want to welcome our new members to the board, Elizabeth Wagoner and Jason Cross, and congratulate Deb Cook on her election to the position of Chair-Elect. I am very excited to work with them and the rest of the board and councilor members. Our next meeting of the board is January 21st, at the Univer-sity of Pennsylvania, followed by the 2015 Philadelphia Section Award lecture by Dr. Donna Huryn. Donna is a truly excellent choice for the award and is rather unique in her accomplish-ments, having outstanding contributions to chemistry in both industrial and academic settings.

It should prove to be an exciting year for chemistry in Philadelphia with this year’s National fall ACS meeting to be held here, from August 21st to 25th. We have assembled a very active plan-ning committee, and, as always, are looking for volunteers. If you have interest in helping with local section activities or sharing your ideas for the National meeting, please contact Anne DeMasi ([email protected]) or Daria Walsh ([email protected]). I want to thank Bill Smith again for his leadership of the section. I look forward to 2016, and hopefully hearing from members on their thoughts about the Section.

2015 ACS FELLOW RODNEY BENNETT

This article was adapted from PICOGRAM, American Chemical Society, AGRO Division 2015; 88:17

Rod was born in High Point, North Carolina, in 1956. The family was in furniture manufacturing and textile production, and was a part of the heritage from the Bennett Place in Durham, NC, the site of the largest surrender of troops in the US Civil War.

After graduation from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, Rod began his career with Ciba-Geigy Corporation in Greensboro, NC. Later he moved to En-Cas Analytical Laboratories in Winston-Salem, NC, where he was Technical Director for 12 years. His professional specialties included residue chemistry, metabolism, environmental fate and worker exposure. Later, after moving to Easton, MD with Wildlife International Ltd., Rod picked up some additional interests in aquatic and avian toxicology. Limited sailing skills were a fun diversion on the Chesapeake Bay even though not perfected.

His professional activities have led him to the Philadelphia, PA, area with Elf Atochem, which became Cerexagri, then part of United Phosphorus, and then JRF America. These last endeavors have entertained him for the past 16 years. Most recently, Rod has joined Critical Path Services, LLC, a Knoell Company (with multiple locations including PA and NC). Each day holds the opportunity to learn something new and to make a positive difference.

Rod’s involvement within the American Chemical Society began in earnest within the Central North Carolina Section (CNC). Excellent program initiatives, such as the Academic-Industrial-Matrix (AIM), sparked a lifelong devotion to the service that ACS provides to individuals and the overall community. On the local front, Rod has had the privilege to serve as secretary, treasurer, vice-chair, and chair of the CNC Section, as well as on the board of managers and as secretary for the Chemical Society of Washington, the Washinton, DC, section of ACS. At various times, he has served as membership chair, regional meeting committee chair, editor, and in other various local ACS activities. On the national front, Rod has been active in the Division of Agricultural Chemicals (AGRO) for the past 36 years. He has served as membership chair, vice chair, program chair, and chair. Currently, Rod is an AGRO Councilor, on the Divisional Activities Committee (DAC), chair of the Technical Programming and Collaboration Subcommittee, chair of the Divisional Officers Caucus (DOC), co-chair of the DAC-IAC working group, and on the editorial board of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Rod is very humbled and greatly honored to have been selected as an ACS Fellow in the class of 2015. Although nomination for the ACS Fellow award came from the Divisional Activities Committee, AGRO is proud to claim him as our own. To be able to work and serve with such a wonderful group as the ACS family is a very special privilege. He hopes that he can live up to the superb examples shown by the current ACS Fellows whom he now proudly joins.

Thank you, Rod, for your outstanding service to ACS!

Guidelines for Student Affiliate Chapters to Request Funds to attend National ACS Meetings

Undergraduate students from ACS Student Affiliate Chapters in the Philadelphia Section are encouraged to consider attending National Meetings of the American Chemical Society. In this regard, a limited amount of funding will be provided to chapters requesting sponsorship based on the following general guidelines.

General Guidelines

1) First consideration will be given to student(s) who wish to attend a National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) to give a presentation (oral or poster). Students attending for other purposes, i.e., to receive an award or attend a specific workshop, etc., are also eli-gible to apply for support.

2) The student(s) must have requested support from their College or University (including de-partment and/or advisor) to assist in defraying the travel costs. Please attach a copy of the correspondence.

3) The student(s) should have a clear idea of the benefits of attending the meeting. Please attach

a short paragraph from each student indicating which sessions, including workshops, etc., the student plans to attend and why these sessions will help them obtain their professional goals.

All applications must include an itemized list of the projected costs of the trip, i.e., registration, airfare, train or car expenses, hotel, etc., and indicate which of these costs (if any) are being provided by other sources.

An application for travel support can be made at any time to the Philadelphia Section, but for full consideration, the application must be received by the section office by January 31st for the Spring meeting and May 31st for the Fall meeting.

The Philadelphia Section will evaluate all applications received by the deadline and vote at the February meeting for the Spring ACS meeting applications and at the June meeting for the Fall ACS meeting applications. The amount of funding available may be influenced by the number of applications for a particular meeting and the costs of attending that meeting, i.e., where it is being held.

The successful applicant must submit a brief report highlighting the conference experience to the Philadelphia Section at the completion of the trip. The original receipts should also be sub-mitted to the Section Office for reimbursement.

the Catalyst 4. Other Business A. Middle Atlantic Region bylaws changes Tony Addison Reporting. Sections comprising the Middle Atlantic Region need to approve bylaw changes, as the Mid-Atlantic Region has accrued sufficient funds to backstop a MARM, and can afford to return more of any MARM surplus to the local Section. Tax regulations require the MAR to hold some type of educational event annually, in accord with its by-laws and non-profit status. The bylaw changes will alter the proportionating of profit and loss between a MARM host Section and the M.A. Region. Proposed: 25% to Region and 75% to host Section. On motion, the changes were approved with no abstentions and one nay. B. A funding request has been received from ACES (U.Penn.) in support of an October 3rd (?) event. ACES is looking for funding for the event from any source. The Section has supported ACES in the past. Request tabled, to be rescheduled to October Board Meeting. And, suggested that ACES submit a Budget request. C. Strategic Planning Committee (Pro temp) The purpose of the current Strategic Planning project is to find ways to save money, improve and broaden our funding sources and to improve Section outreach both to members and the public. A questionnaire will be sent to Committee Chairs. D. WCC annual meeting Saturday, September 19th. Registration is probably closed. E. PAGESTM November 7th event. PA law now requires that volunteers have “background” checks performed. There being no additional business before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 5:23 PM. Respectfully submitted, Alan R. Heldon, Secretary, [email protected]
