Greetings to the members of the ACS Philadelphia Section! The

crisp cool of the autumn season is upon us this morning as I write my

monthly column. I must admit, it is quite refreshing.

The Section recently completed its yearly election. I would like to

thank the members who participated and cast their ballots. It may not

seem important, but the Section’s yearly election is very important! My sincere thanks to Dr.

Jason Cross, chair of the Tellers Committee, for all his efforts in making the election process

happen.

The Section’s September event was held at The University of the Sciences and was planned and

hosted by the Younger Chemists Committee (YCC). Our thanks to Taylor Keller and the mem-

bers of YCC for their efforts at thinking outside the box for a unique, but very informative top-

ic. In this seemingly ever-increasing pace of modern society, taking the time to think about the

little things that we can do every day to improve our lives was, to me, reassuring. We may not

think about how we eat, or sit at our desks, or stand at the laboratory bench, but each one of

these contributes to our overall health and well-being. Again, our thanks to YCC for this event

and for giving us the time to stop and smell the roses.

Progressing into October, we prepare for the highest point in the Section’s yearly programming:

the presentation of the ACS Philadelphia Section Award. This award is the highest honor the

Section bestows on one of its members. For 2019, the awardee is Professor Michelle Francl of

Bryn Mawr College. Please join me in congratulating Michelle on this award. The event will be

held on Thursday, October 17 from 6:00-9:00 PM in the main dining hall of Wyndham at Bryn

Mawr College. I encourage all our members to pass the word to friends and colleagues and join

us on this day that is a high point for the Section.

Further into fall, in November, will be the Ullyot Public Lecture taking place at the Science

History Institute. This year’s featured speaker will be Professor Roald Hoffmann of Cornell

University. I am sure this will be a well-attended event, so I encourage people to register early.

In addition to our programming, the operations of the Section continue to move forward. We

are looking for input from our members and are processing the suggestions that we gathered

throughout this year. As always, if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or ideas,

please feel free to contact me.

Enjoy the refreshing cool winds of fall!

SPEAKER’S ABSTRACT AND BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Michelle M. Francl

Frank B. Mallory Professor of Chemistry

Bryn Mawr College

Molecules on the Edge

Abstract: Chemists are fascinated with edge cases, molecular structures that push the bounda-

ries of what we imagine possible. My group has been exploring the structure of organic and or-

ganometallic molecules with Möbius topology. Why are these structures inherently so strained,

and are there ways to relieve that strain to make them more accessible synthetic targets? And

why are chemists so determined to explore the edges of molecular space?

Biography: Michelle M. Francl, PhD is the Frank B. Mallory Professor of Chemistry at Bryn

Mawr College, where she has been on the faculty since 1986, and an Adjunct Scholar of the

Vatican Observatory. She is a highly cited quantum chemist with research interests ranging

from the development of methods for computational chemistry, including methods for assigning

atomic charges, to the structures of topologically intriguing molecules. She is a past chair of the

Computers in Chemistry division of the ACS (COMP) and was elected a Fellow of the Ameri-

can Chemical Society in 2009. She is also a writer, whose essays on science, culture and policy

appear regularly in Nature Chemistry. She has contributed articles on various facets of chemis-

try to Slate as well as to several collections in print, most recently the Oxford Companion to

Sugar and Sweets.
