The great annual migration

The last weekend of , ~'' August means the great annual migration--of ~-

1 college students, usually followed by parents, siblings and friends carrying clothing, refrigeratqrs and couches into the dorms, houses or apartments that john Carroll Uqiversity students Wi\l call home for the next nine montqs.~( '" 0

Say good-bye to the aforementioned parents, siblings and friends and get settled in, making it a new home while catching up with or meeting your roommate. Remember to stock the fridge with caffeinated bev~~ges and latenight munchies for those unexpect~Jiifarties and allnighters you just know can't be avoided. And classes haven't even started yet with hist minute problems like dropping and adding classes or finding your classes. Then there's the obligatory parking problems, overlooked tuition bills and winding lines in the bookstore -- all to start the year off right.

4 SPORTS The Carroll News, August 26, 1995

Carroll looks to new faces to fill talent voids JCU athletics planning to continue tradition of excellence in the OAC and beyond

Jude Kilty Sports Editor

If you thought the President of the United States and great college athletes have nothing in common, you're wrong.

They both have four-year terms. Sometimes an exceptional few, or the

simply lucky, have that time extended. In either position, however, people want to

know who will be able to replace them, especially if they were integral to the team. As hard as the task may be, or as long as it may take, someone, somehow will fill the role. And fill it well.

Such voids are evident in john Carroll University Athleticsentering the 1995-96 school year.

Eventhoughl994-95 season didn't bring the coveted Ohio Athletic Conference All-Sports Trophy back to University Heights, OH, the Class of 19951eft much more than just divots to be replaced alongjCU's athletic fairway. The list seems endless.

Fall sports featured athletes like Blue Streak goalie Mike Lyons and sweeper Tom Hahn, who never lost on Wasmer Field's turf in four varsity seasons. They both lef tjCU with three OAC championships under their beltS. Or how about last year's football seniors like quarterback 11). lnsana, split end Sean Williams,

and tight end Brian Ash who helped compile over 20 offensive records to lead Carroll to 1ts second ever OAC title?

Or what about volleyball players Stacey Mullally and Leslie Mahl, the two all-time leaders in kills and assists in jCU athletic history, who helped lead Carroll to twoOAC championships and two NCAA playoff berths in four seasons?

The list of outstanding athletes goes on:

jim Petkunas(three-timeOACSwimmerof the Year), GET All-American's Danielle Sluga (soccer, track and cross country) and Aaron Sheets(alsoanall-American in wrestling heavyweight). As the list goes on, so do the questions-- who will fill those shoes? Who will replace the irreplaceable? No matter, really. Fact is, the irreplaceable are replaceable. It won't be easy, but someone will do it.

Nobody thought Babe Ruth's home run feats could be topped, but Hank Aaron topped them. Nor did anyone think there would be better players in NBA history than the super stars like Larry Bird and Erving "Magic" johnson. Michael jordan squelched those notions. Perhaps more appropriately, His Airness (as USA Today's Bryan Burwell likes to call him) soared over them.

Carroll may not have any Aaron's or jordan's, but there are JCU athletes who are capable of getting the job done. They may be seniors lost in the mix of past hero and heroine glory. Or, they could be incoming freshman we've never been exposed to.

Hereareafewof the JCU athletes' names you may know by the end of the year, helping

push those superstars of the past into exactly that, the past: Volleyball Pamjimison, Dawn Ebinger, Women's Soccer, Thea Consler, Oona Blakemore, Shannon Sullivan, Angela Rochowiak; Men's Soccer, Bob Krupitzer and Adrian Del Busso, Football, Scott O'Donnell, Chris Anderson, Chad Rankin, jason Tercek.

Those are just the fall sports. By the end of the year, we'll have plenty of fresh, new sports heroes and heroines that we won't be able to imagine losing for the seasons to

come. And I'm sure we'll do the same thing the

year after that and the year after that and the year after that. ..
