Dur- ing his visits to the new church buildings, the pastors are telling him of “believers being encouraged and unbelievers amazed.” Pastor Getachew at Langano Baptist Church, our first Ethiopian project, re- ports that since their building was dedicated just a couple of months ago, they’ve had two families join the church plus four others accept Christ as Savior. He wrote telling us that, “it’s amazing the way God answers prayer. It’s not something we understand… but He is faithful to answer our prayers.” In Haiti , missionary Rodney Fitzsimmons wrote, “we can't thank you enough for your assistance” in complet- ing the construction of the churches in Gatro, Des Fontaines, and Grand Rac. The Christian School Movement in Buddhist Myanmar Against all odds, a small Christian school ministry has emerged in western Myanmar. In operation for just two years, Grace Children’s Education Center has nearly 250 elementary students. In addition to the tradi-tional reading, writing, and math classes, these students are receiv-ing basic Biblical training. The school rented a small house with a large yard, and developed a tuition schedule to cover rent, salaries, and school supplies. Their objective is to operate the school without regular monthly outside support. The faculty is comprised of graduates from a fundamental Baptist college and seminary in the capital, Yangon. As word spread that the children were getting solid academic train-ing, enrollment grew rapidly. Families earning just $50/month willingly pay tuition fees ranging from $3.00 to $6.00 per month per student. Before the end of that first year, the school outgrew their rented house and expanded into the back yard with temporary bamboo and palm thatched classrooms with dirt floors. This is one of the first independent Baptist ele-

mentary schools in the entire country. Their lo-cality is unique; their city is tolerant of Christians, and they’ve forged a respected relationship with

local school authorities. This year they offer classes from pre-school and kindergarten through fifth grade. In Myan-mar, high school concludes at grade ten, and they hope to eventually offer those additional classes. But first they need to improve their present class-rooms. Already, the Lord has provided the funds for the land, and some men from the local independent Baptist church have volunteered to build the classrooms. But nei-ther the school, nor the church have the means to buy the mate-rials. We estimate that a concrete block on slab building will cost $2,500

per classroom. Eight classrooms are needed right away to house classes through grade 6. Would you like to partner with us to help these Burmese children receive both a solid education, and the Good News of Jesus Christ?

“...train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old,

he will not depart from it…” Prov 22:6

Ethiopia: Our third building project Our third project in Ethio-pia is in the ancient capital city of Debre Berhan, about 75 miles northeast of the present capital, Addis Ababa. Located in the mountains at an elevation of 8,000 ft, Debre Berhan has a population of 67,000 and is the home of Chris-tian Baptist Church. Debre Berhan is known for its rug making, but the economy in the region is dependent on farming. Almost all farmers in the central highlands own livestock. A typical herd contains cattle, sheep, equines, and poultry. However, severe droughts are frequent, and as crop yields fail, farmers are forced to sell ani-mals to purchase food grain. Ethiopia is the oldest independ-ent African country. It’s princi-ple religions are Ethiopian Or-thodox and Islam. Less than 2% are born-again Christian. Christian Baptist Church was formed 15 years

The Competition for souls: Muslims (left) and Ethiopian Orthodox (right)

ago and numbers a little over 100 worshippers. During the communist rule, believers were killed or tortured, but the church continued, and in the past few years, it started three more churches in other parts of the city. For the past five years they’ve prayed and saved for a new church building. Thus far, they’ve only raised $1,800 on their own,

and building costs are rising faster than they’re able to save.

The Carpenter’s Project would like to help them get into a new building. Because they’re lo-cated in a larger city, building codes and permits will elevate the cost. We’re praying that God’s people will provide $12,000 to add to their savings

to allow them to worship in a comfortable build-ing. Please pray for partners to help us in Ethiopia.

Haiti: Three Churches Completed, Fourth Planned This quarter, construction on three churches in northern Haiti were completed. Missionary Rodney Fitzsimmons coordinated the projects using men from the mother church, Berean Bap-tist in Gonaives. Under Brother Rodney’s guidance, more than 200 Haitians are preparing for ministry at his

institute. And in the north surrounding the city of Gonaives, churches are growing, and new churches are being established each year. This fall, a new building will be needed in Bwadom (similar to these shown below) for a growing congregation. Pray that the Lord will bring us partners to provide for its $6,000 cost.
