We were delighted when the rscm offered us the opportunity to create a further collection of carols to supplement those in The Carol Book.

Our primary concern was to remain faithful to the rationale of The Carol Book which has proved so successful since it was published in 2005. Choirs, choir directors and accompanists have been grateful for the straightforward and accessible arrangements offered there, and we wanted to build on a tried and tested formula.

Even so there was the danger of assembling a carol collection which lacked any coherent purpose. We needed a theme which would link the new material together.

We believe we have found it in offering sixteen carols based on traditional British and European melodies. These are of English, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, French, Dutch, Flemish, German, Austrian, Swedish, Polish, Bohemian and Catalan origin. Some will be familiar, others less so, but we hope that all will fi nd favour.

Knowing how much the three-part arrangements in The Carol Book have been appreciated, we have provided not just traditional four-part (SATB) arrangements, but also harmonically compatible three-part versions such that every carol here can be sung by a three-part choir. The compatibility enables accompanists to enrich the three-part choral harmonies by playing the four-part version if they so desire.

Several carols can also be sung by unison or two part choirs. Indeed all of them can be so performed if an accompanist plays the choral parts.

In some cases we have used the original English texts, but most carols needed at the very least to be translated into English; and in several cases we took the view that an entirely new English text would be preferable to a paraphrase of the original. In this respect we are most grateful to Julian Bell, Martin Leckebusch, David Mowbray and Paul Wigmore for writing distinguished texts which bring new life to carol melodies hitherto rarely sung in the English-speaking world.

By their very nature, traditional carol melodies have survived the passage of time, and it is our hope that these arrangements will prove of lasting value and bring lasting pleasure to choirs and congregations alike as they share in the joy of celebrating Christ’s birth.

We offer, as an appendix, People look east with a new text by Martin Leckebusch. This circumvents the copyright problems experienced by those who bought The Carol Book when it fi rst appeared.

Outline Christmas Carol Service

THE GATHERING

PROCESSIONAL HYMN

17 O come our world’s Redeemer, come83 Joy to the world! the Lord has come16 O come, O come, Emmanuel69 Hark! the herald angels sing INTRODUCTION / BIDDING PRAYER (EITHER 1 or 2)

1. Welcome. At Christmas time we delight again to hear the story of the journey to Bethlehem, the song of the angels, the surprise of the shepherds, and their joy as they found Jesus in the manger.

But lest we forget he was born to poverty, we remember at this season all who are hungry or cold.

And lest we forget he became a refugee, we remember now the stranger and the lonely among us.

And lest we forget he felt the pain of life and death, we remember now those who are ill, or anxious, or bereaved.

And because we know he came for our salvation, let us in heart and mind go once again to Bethlehem, to hear the message of the angels and worship afresh the Son of God.

2. I welcome you, on behalf of … We have come together as the family of God, in our Father’s presence, to celebrate the great festival of Christmas. In this service we hear and receive the good news of the birth of Christ and we offer to God our thanksgiving in the joyful singing of carols.

As we gather together in the name of Christ, we pray for the world he came to save:

for the Church, that it may be enabled in our generation to surrender anew to God’s holy Wis-dom, and bear the good news of God’s love to a needy world;

for the world, which is already Christ’s, that all its peoples may recognize their responsibility for its future, and may be inspired by the message of Christmas to work together for the establish-ment of justice, freedom and peace everywhere;

for all in special need, the sick, the anxious, the lonely, the fearful and the bereaved, that the peace and light of the Christ-child may bring hope and healing to all who sit in darkness.

We commend all whom we love, or who have asked for our prayers, to the unfailing mercy of our heavenly Father, and say together, as Christ himself taught us:
