Reducing Your Risk for DementiaBy Ava M. Stinnett
As you may know, dementia is not a specific disease. It is an overall term for a complex set ofsymptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease, vasculardementia, and dementia from Parkinson’s disease. The causes of dementia can produce similar, overlapping symptoms such as confusion, memory loss, and difficulty performing everydayactivities.
While we can’t control age or genetics, there are lifestyle factors that researchers believe mayhelp reduce the risk or delay the onset of dementia when we get older. Before making anysubstantial diet or lifestyle changes, it’s advised that you first speak with your physician.
· Adopt a healthy diet. A diet that includes lots of fruits, green leafy vegetables, legumes, fish, olive oil, and whole grains•and is low in•saturated fats, dairy products, meat, poultry, andadded sugar•may help preserve cognitive function.
· Exercise regularly. A study conducted by researchers at UCLA Medical Center and theUniversity of Pittsburgh found that virtually any type of aerobic physical activity mayimprove brain volume and cut the risk of dementia by approximately 50 percent. Goodexercise choices include walking briskly, dancing, swimming, cycling, and even gardening.
· Get refreshing sleep. First, get as much natural sunlight as possible early in the day. Try togo to sleep and get up at the same time every day. Avoid napping during the day. Limitcaffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and big meals at night. Take time for relaxing activities beforesleep, such as meditation; slow, deep breathing; progressive muscle relaxation; or visualizinga peaceful, restful place. If it helps, listen to some soft music or a book on tape.
· Maintain your blood pressure at a healthy level. Try to lose extra weight—especiallyaround the waistline—and maintain a healthy weight; reduce sodium by reading food labelsand reducing processed foods; and limit alcohol consumption.
· Take a complete multivitamin. Although some preliminary studies support the use ofvitamin and mineral supplements, especially Vitamin K because of its role in anti-aging, andcertain spices, it’s best to discuss the use of such supplements with your physician beforeadding them to your diet.
· Play games and laugh more! Mentally stimulating memory games, coloring, doodling, doingcrossword or jigsaw puzzles, and socializing with others engage the brain, grow new braincells, and may ultimately help delay the onset of dementia.
Results of medical research studies appear in the headlines every day. In fact, the NationalInstitute on Aging supports more than 30 clinical trials. As of now, prevention is the best cure for

Dear Residents, Families, Friends and Staff,
We have recently received the results of theResident Surveys. I am happy to say over all theywere really good. There are some issues that youhave brought to our attention and the team here
will work on a action plan to address theseconcerns. We may want to meet with the
residents to get more feed back. If this becomesthe case, we will hold some resident focus
groups. I will make sure you are aware of thefocus groups time and place in advance.
It has been brought to my attention that someresidents may feel that while I am out of the

to feel or think that I am not available to you.

McDonaldTo some people, living a thrilling life might mean one with adventure and risk, or perhaps it has
sexual connotations, but in actuality it has nothing to do with any of those. We can live a thrilling
life by simply opening our eyes and looking at the world differently. I know from personal experience
that when I became an artist a few years ago, I have had to, and still am, learning to see.
Some people see the world as just simply ho hum, yet to close our eyes to all the thrills it has to offer
us is to lose out on treasure after treasure.
Here are some rather effortless ways to add thrills to your life:
1. Walk down the street (or sit by a window or outdoors by your house if you can’t walk) and
with your eyes, search for something you haven’t noticed before. See what you can find there
that is fascinating. You might have to focus for a few seconds before you find something that
catches your attention. For instance, look at the shape and colors in a rock. Or the multitude
of colors in a bird’s feathers.
2. Look up in the sky. Here in the islands the clouds move quickly and the shapes change into
various shapes and designs that are fascinating. In California the clouds are totally different
but equally as fascinating. See how many familiar designs you can find, such as a face, an
animal, or wherever your unbridled imagination takes you. The sky’s the limit!
3. You won’t have to go far to look into the faces of the interesting people around you. There is
an unlimited number to study. Look at the difference face structures. Eyes tell us a story
about each of us. Our faces reveal our journey. What could be more thrilling? We may think
our lives are closed books, but our faces give us away.
4. Study the patterns and shapes of peoples clothing. Think about the designer and how much
effort went into the final result.
5. Sunsets and sunrises are also worthy of study. No two are ever the same.
6. The plants and flowers also invite our eyes to feast on them. Again, colors, shapes, textures,
and scents or odors abound.
7. Have you actually seen the dog or cat that you pet daily? Can you describe the eyes, the fur,
the color?
Those are only a few things to get you started. These are good conversation topics as well. As we
grow more seasoned, our brains will grow lazy and channel our lives into a tiny corner unless we
make the effort to keep it healthy. We must exert ourselves and enter into thinking games and other
way to help us stay the vital, healthy people we were meant to be. As we create a more thrilling world
for ourselves, our world becomes a thrilling place in which to live. Or as Dr. Wayne Dyer says,
“WHEN YOU CHANGE THE WAY YOU LOOK AT THINGS, THE THINGS YOU LOOK AT
CHANGE.”
