From Your Pastor “Peace of Mind”
As your pastor it is one of my privileges to be a part of every season of your lives. I appreciate the opportunities to be included in moments of celebration and grief. Thank you for the warm welcome and allowing me to walk alongside you. I have enjoyed celebrating your birthdays, anniversaries, breaking bread together, as well as moments to cry, grieve, and mourn as we have said good bye to loved ones. One of my favorite verses of scripture is from Romans 8:38-39 “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor
things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The confession of faith known as The Brief Statement of Faith succinctly puts it this way, “In life and in death we belong to God.” As members of a Christian community, we can trust that in our living and in our dying we are God’s beloved. George Bernard Shaw is known to have said, “The statistics about death are very impressive. One out of every one dies.” It’s not a matter of if we will die, but a matter of when we will die. As a pastor I have been asked a handful of times, “Who is responsible for planning my funeral?” In the Presbyterian Church we call funerals a Witness to the Resurrection. The service is a reflection of the person’s Christian witness and provides the gathered community hope. When we lose a loved one we experience loss, sorrow, and grief. Before we die, we have the opportunity to offer our family the gift of peace by planning ahead and prayerfully considering the details for our arrangements. Because it can be difficult under emotional stress to plan wisely, one of the responsibilities of the session is to encourage its members to discuss and plan in advance the arrangements which will be necessary at the time of death. If you are interested in meeting with me or sharing your plans you may call the church office to schedule an appointment. If you would like to do this work with your family, we have a funeral planning worksheet on file in the office to help guide you. As you go through this process my hope for you is that your faith grows and your trust in the Lord is renewed. Joyfully, Pastor Travis

Three Finds
A search of books on the Beatitudes revealed two
choices in addition to the many Bible study aids found on the
church library shelves. James W. Moore’s When All Else
Fails…Read the Instructions offers three sets from our
“handbook”: The Beatitudes, the Ten Commandments, and the
New Commandment of Jesus. Moore calls the Bible “a profound and practical handbook for living a
meaningful, productive, and zestful life.” The second choice is by Max Lucado, an author whose studies have
been used more than once at FPC in recent years. Lucado’s The Applause of Heaven offers the Beatitudes as
providers of “what we need to discover the joy of God” along with a study guide.
A lovely book for young people to extend Christmas into February is A Wind in the Willows
Christmas with illustrations by Michael Hague. This adaptation of The Wind in the Willows is a “heart-
warming tale of friendship generosity, and homecoming” that would make a cozy winter bedtime story.

Jim and I would like
to thank our First
Presbyterian Church
family for your care
and support during the treatment of my broken ankle.
The beautiful prayer shawl, meals, flower
arrangement, cards, visits, encouragement, and
prayers were all most welcome and an essential part
of the whole ongoing process. A good, supportive
church family is a true blessing for which we are
most grateful.

Giving in 2020
Offering envelopes are available in boxes on the tables in
the entrance areas for the Sanctuary. These envelopes are
certainly not required for making gifts to the church, but
many givers find them helpful in making weekly or monthly
offerings. Feel free to pick up a box.
To give through automatic draft from an account,
please set that up with your bank.
Online giving is also available through our
website at www.fpckinston.org.
Can you help with a meal?
We would like to provid for new parents
Will and Bethany Sutton once a week
for the next few months. If you can
help, please sign up at the back of the
Sanctuary or contact Nancy Rains at 307-752-4946 if
you have questions.
To share a specific prayer concern or make known a particular concern or suggestion, please see any of the members of Session listed below who comprise the elected leadership of our church.
