2 THE CARDINAL | Summer 2013

There are many positive signs that God is clearly at work in the lives of our

faculty, staff and students at Fort Worth Christian School. As we look to the future, the Board of Trustees wants you to know we are committed to providing an excellent Christian education. Our school continues to have success in a variety

of areas including academics, athletics, spiritual and extra-curricular activities.

I am excited to report that our enrollment for the 2013-14 school year is projected to be approximately 870 students. While we are close to our capacity, it does not change our commitment to keeping our classroom sizes small.

In almost every element of our lives it is important to constantly ask questions about how we are doing and where are we going. In April 2013 we conducted another online survey to current FWC parents. The intent of the survey was to gain further information on how well the school is performing in all areas including Academics, Spiritual, and Extra-Curricular activities. The survey results are very encouraging and we are committed to taking this feedback and developing programs to address critical issues that were identified through this process. The following four areas are being addressed as a result of the feedback:

1. Deficiencies in math program

2. Role of students and music in chapel

3. Continue to enhance Fine Arts programs

4. Processes for managing behavior

We will continue to seek ways of improving in all areas to ensure we remain the best kingdom education facility for our families. As the new school year is upon us, we look forward to the many great things God has in store!

Summer 2013 | THE CARDINAL 3

After a great season, a team can look back and point to a couple of significant concepts that shaped their

success. Those concepts seem to focus on two things, competence and character. At Fort Worth Christian School, we strive to not just have a good season but have a remarkable history. We pursue competence daily and act with great character and do it over and over. Consistency is the key to becoming a remarkable organization. Our community sees FWC as an outstanding Christian school. This is evident as we were voted the “Best Private School” in Living Magazine’s “2013 Best Of” contest!

When people consider where they want to educate their children or invest their charitable dollars, qualities like character, competence, and consistency are attributes they consider. We continue to have a record number of new families come to us and we believe they see these characteristics. Our success in being a school that reflects these long term achievements is shown in the number of families moving to the DFW area and selecting FWC for their child’s education.

Our intentional focus this year is to strengthen our relationship with our families. A strong bond and partnership with our families is a vital component to providing a quality Christ-centered education. We ask you to join us by giving both your time and money in helping us raise up future generations of Christ followers. This partnership supports the goals of competence, character and consistency, which God calls us to each day.

For the kids,

Kelly MoorePresident

High School Students Empowered for Successby Brian Miller

Fort Worth Christian is one of the few area private schools to offer both Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Credit (DC) classes. One of the great benefits of a high school student taking such classes is the opportunity to earn college credit while they are still in high school. Most colleges and universities grant credit and/or placement based on completion of the course for DC or for qualifying AP test scores. Students can save money and get a head start on their degree upon entering college with credits earned through these courses.

Taking AP classes can help students succeed in college and even earn placement in a chosen college or university. The skills developed through AP courses (critical thinking, time management and study skills) help with the rigorous demands of college. AP can also help you save on college expenses by providing expanded scholarship opportunities and greater capability to graduate earlier. Fort Worth Christian School currently offers high school juniors and seniors twelve Advanced Placement classes.

Advantages for students enrolling in Dual Credit classes include the ability to earn college credit while still in high school. Students learn the rigors of college work early and are able to adjust study habits to college work before they have to deal with the total college experience. Students can use their dual credit work to demonstrate their ability to complete college level work when they apply for admission to colleges, universities, and vocational schools. They can complete entry level, elective, or occupational college credit work at significantly lower costs than they would

experience at four-year public or at private institutions of higher education. FWC currently offers high school juniors and seniors ten Dual Credit classes.

Middle School by Wes Hamilton

Our middle school students are blessed to be able to participate in academic trips each year as a way to enhance their learning. Traditionally our 8th graders travel to Washington D.C. where they honor and show appreciation for those who have sacrificed on our behalf. This year one of our students demonstrated his appreciation in a very unique way.

Hunter Perkins has developed a skill in which he designs and builds custom pens. These are pens you would purchase as a nice gift for a professional on that special promotion or for graduation. Using his skill in a spirit of service, Hunter made approximately 30 pens that he took with him to Washington D.C. He distributed them to World War II veterans at the World War II memorial thanking them and honoring them for their service for our country.

At our 8th grade awards ceremony, Hunter was recognized with the citizenship award by the Daughters of the American Revolution for the act of kindness he demonstrated.

Elementary Principal Jim Calvin Receives His DoctorateCongratulations to our Elementary Principal Jim Calvin for earning his doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from TCU in May. Dr. Calvin completed his final requirements by defending his final project called a Capstone Experience at TCU. The Capstone experience project allowed Dr. Calvin to share his personal journey and relate it to the lives of various Biblical

characters whose experiences resonated with particular stages of his life.

Dr. Calvin learned during his three years of doctorate work that his time was an investment in understanding God’s hand at work in his life and the importance of living an undivided life (a life not compartmentalized by the different hats we may wear). “When I began my doctoral studies, I knew that I wanted to make these connections and grow both personally and professionally, otherwise I was just earning a piece of paper to hang on the wall.”

When asked how completing his doctorate will help the students at FWC, Jim answered, “I have learned the importance of continuing education and want each student to embrace the fact that we are to be life-long learners. When I visit the classrooms, the students are teaching me. It is not that I have arrived because there is still more for me to learn as I continue on my journey to becoming all that God desires me to be.”

Students are the beneficiaries of projects, articles, and books Dr. Calvin passes on to our teachers. This helps promote greater student engagement, enhances learning, and improves performance. Dr. Calvin promotes opportunities for job-embedded learning and finds ways to create more time to grow as a professional learning community. He has restructured the schedule for the upcoming school year to include time each week for grade-level teachers to assess student learning and confer together.

With his full schedule, Dr. Calvin is never too busy to greet students at the door in the morning, to look them in the eye and give an encouraging word, or to throw the ball with the kids on the playground. He blesses our students as he tries to follow the example of Christ as He encouraged His apostles to let the little children come to HIm!

To God Be the Glory!

6 THE CARDINAL | Summer 2013

It has been another exciting year for Cardinal Athletics! The trophy case and walls of our Cardinal Gym are decorated with plaques, trophies, banners, pictures, etc., exemplifying our achievements in athletics. We are proud of our student athletes for their accomplishments on the playing field and for the commitment, hard work, dedication and perseverance each has contributed toward the successes of his/her teams, and certainly for carrying on the tradition of excellence at Fort Worth Christian.

Our Cardinal teams have shared lots of success this year: All athletic teams earned post-season honors: Cross-Country – 3rd at State, Volleyball – Playoffs, Football – Regional Finals, Boys Soccer – Playoffs, Girls Soccer – Playoffs, Boys Basketball – Playoffs, Girls Basketball – State Semifinals, Baseball – State Semifinals, Softball – State Finals, Boys Track – 8 State Qualifiers, Girls Track – 13 State Qualifiers, Tennis – 2 State Qualifiers, Golf – Regional Qualifiers.

I would be remiss, though, if I did not point out that we have not only good athletes,

but also great kids! Kids that go above and beyond what is normal; above and beyond not only on the playing field but in academics, in the classroom and at various academic competitions, on mission trips, at church organizations, and in other extra-curricular activities such as choir, band, art, and theatre; kids that look out for one another and push each to be their best; kids that share the belief that doing the right thing is still very cool; kids that simply contribute where they can and see the big picture: that academics, athletics and other extra-curriculars are each small plans God has for them in their lives, but are opportunities to shine for Him, and mixed together help mold them into what they are to become. We are blessed!

We are blessed, too, to have the finest support group around led by our cheer teams, band, Cardinal Crew, faculty, and student body. When teams come to play against Fort Worth Christian, they play us all!

IT IS GOOD TO BE A CARDINAL!

Taking Shape Campaign Is On Track

Our Capital Campaign and construction projects for Fort Worth Christian School are at a halfway point. We

have completed the high school renovations and recently celebrated the dedication of a new administration building on March 28th. More than 100 guests gathered to dedicate this new building in honor of Harvey and Lucille Norton. The Nortons were one of the founding families who established Fort Worth Christian School in 1958.

The Admissions Center located inside the administration building is named in honor of Bob and Donna Stambaugh. Mrs. Stambaugh taught at FWC for 34 years and Bob served on the Board of Trustees. Please come by for a tour of our new front door for FWC.

New DirectionsThe final project in this campaign is to complete the funding and then construct the Chapel/Performing Arts Center next to the administration building. These three projects, high school renovation, administration building, and Chapel/Performing Arts Center comprise the most ambitious and challenging project the school has ever tackled. But more importantly, it may be the most important project in shaping the educational and spiritual lives of all of our students. Having more classroom space, a place to perform, and more importantly, a place to worship, is what these projects bring to our students. The return on your investment in FWC will have tremendous impact on the lives of tens of thousands of students for decades to come. We ask that you join us in funding this last phase to help us expand our sphere of influence for God’s kingdom.

The vision for a new Chapel & Performing Arts Center is in sight, but we need each of you to join us in funding this exciting project. A large performance center on campus will encourage student participation and confidence in fine arts, provide space for combined high school chapel and develop a potential source of revenue for future programs. All FWC students and families will benefit from this facility. The impact on the spiritual lives of our children and families is your significant return on this valuable investment. It is worthy of your involvement and support.

In the coming days we will be in touch with you about how you can help.

For more information please contact Suzan Jenkins at [email protected] or 817.520.6200.

Taking Shape – Fort Worth Christian School Capital Campaign

New Focus

Christian schools are unique and a Christian school capital campaign

to raise funds for buildings or other school improvements requires a customized plan for each school’s needs, circumstances and budget.

With this in mind, we are excited to report Fort Worth Christian School has retained the consulting firm of Dickerson, Bakker & Associates to restructure and energize the Taking Shape Capital Campaign.

Dickerson, Bakker & Associates brings 26 years of managing and directing hundreds of capital campaigns. Seventy-five percent of their consulting work is with Christian private schools. 2013 Cardinal Gala

Senator Kelly Hancock served as emcee for the evening

10 THE CARDINAL | Summer 2013

There was more than enough light to fill the ballroom at the 2013 Cardinal Gala,

and most of it emanated from our hearts. Peter Furler, accomplished songwriter and former lead singer of the Newsboys, opened the evening with a musical set designed to energize the audience with wonder at what God has done in the world at large and in our lives. Furler’s energy and love for the Lord shone from the stage and brought us to our feet in praise, pre-paring us to hear the incredible testimony of Tim Tebow, an athlete who is known as much for his faith as for his football game, as much for praying as for playing.

Through a casual interview conducted by FWC president, Kelly Moore, Tebow explained that he relies on the Bible when he is under stress and weathering criticism. It is a practice he began in his youth, when his mother chose specific scriptures she then “hid in [his] heart.” Pam Tebow required her son to memorize verses that illustrate the importance of humility

There was more than enough light to fill Christian football fans may say that they can see evidence of the Word written on his heart, but even the secular world knows that Tebow loves the Bible. They have seen it written on his face for years. He explained that his trademark eye black was a result of a quick decision made fifteen minutes before the game versus the University of Tennessee during his junior year at the University of Florida. His motivation was “to impact someone or be encouraging to someone.” Philippians 4:13 came to his mind. He continued to wear the reference for “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” emblazoned under his eyes, game after game. Before long, this quiet influence spread in a way that Tebow could not have

buying and wearing Phil. 4:13 eye black to every game. He laughs when he consid-ers that most had no idea what it meant.

Then a few days before the SEC champi-onship game, Tebow felt God move his heart to change the verse. He decided to wait and see if the Gators won, then he would change the verse for the national championship game, a much larger stage. When they did win, and the time came to play The University of Oklahoma for the national title, he chose John 3:16, because “it is the essence of our hope” as believers. Later, he would find out that 94 million people had searched for the verse on Google during the game. He had intended to make an impact, but had never dreamed it would be an impact of

and the danger of pride. Over time, he remembers, that truth became part of his character.

“As I began to get older, those verses kind of took shape in my life, and I started to understand that this athletic ability that was given to me—given to me—is a gift. It’s not mine. God gave it to me for a rea-son, for a purpose. Not for me to make myself look good, but for me to make Him look good … The more I make people look at me, the more tragic it is, but the more I can make people see Christ in me [through] the gift that God has given me, then I’m doing something that matters.”

PanamaThis was FWC’s first experience on a short-term mission in the country of Panama. A group of 20 high school students and five adults spent time working with a missionary group in the area of Panama City and a town called El Valle. The group was able to take part in running a weekend youth retreat for teenagers. This was an incredible opportunity to interact with these teens who are trying to follow Christ in an environment that can be difficult to do so.

The group was also able to interact with a group of people from a jungle tribe known as the Embera people. They live in primitive huts and live simple lives off the land in the jungles of Panama. The group spent the majority of one day and a night in one of the villages. They led children’s story time with the village children and experienced a worship time with the Christians there. It was an incredible opportunity to be part of God’s work with people from a lifestyle and culture so very different from ours.

PeruThis trip to Cusco, Peru was an opportunity for 21 Students and six adults to serve in a medical clinic and an orphanage in support of Dyer Family Missions and Continent of Great Cities. Students spent time leading Vacation Bible School and serving at the orphanage in many different ways.

One of the key efforts in working with the orphanage was getting them to a point of self-sustainability. Quality orphans homes are hard to come by in Peru because strong funding and support are scarce. As part of this effort the group improved the water infrastructure of the home by extending water lines to a part of the home that was previously unusable.

Another notable experience was in ministering to a group of severely disabled children. The group spent time playing with them and showing them the love and care of Christ.

NicaraguaFor the 3rd year in a row Fort Worth Christian spent a week serving with Mission Para Cristo in Jinotega, Nicaragua. Mission Para Cristo is involved in many different outreach efforts in this city of around 100,000. In addition to running a local church, this incredible ministry includes conducting regular medical clinics, a ministry to teenage mothers, and the mission operates 27 schools with 47 classrooms with over 2,700 children enrolled.

During our week June 3-8 our 20 students and seven adults were able to serve in many of the areas that the mission oversees. The week included manual labor, playing with and teaching children at an area-wide children’s daycare and encouraging our brothers and sisters in Christ.

OklahomaFor the third year, a group of faculty, staff and students spent a week serving in Oklahoma. This trip was June 3-8. This year brought a whole new experience in the aftermath of the devastation brought on by the Moore, Oklahoma tornado as well as other storms that devastated the area in the weeks leading up to the trip. Students were able to spend time helping with the relief efforts as part of the time there. The group was also able to assist several ongoing efforts including a Christ-centered homeless shelter, the area food bank and the Boys and Girls Clubs.

For the fourth year now, Fort Worth Christian has taken part in missions on a global scale. It is in efforts like these that The Fort Worth Christian motto, “ Shaping Lives that Change the World,” rings true. We very much want our students to live lives that are on mission for Christ. In addition to serving and helping further the ongoing work of missionaries worldwide, the experience of a short term mission trip can help fuel the passion that so many of our students share to bring the light of Christ into the darkness. The 2012-2013 school year included short-term mission trips to Panama, Peru, Nicaragua, and Oklahoma. Take a look at what these trips were like!
