End of the Quarter

By: Mackenzie

Scroggins

It’s the end of the

third quarter, and we all

know

what that

means.

Final

exams are

halfway

here, and

we only

have one

more

opportunity to bring home

a satisfactory report card.

With busy lives, however,

it seems nearly impossible!

Perhaps sports, academic

teams, clubs, and drama

practice

keep

getting

in our

way, but

there

are

methods on how to

maintain a great GPA and

get all of your things done.

Don’t take too much on!

It’s great that you want to

THE CARDINAL~~~~ March 25

do a lot of things, but

spreading yourself too thin

is not the answer. Think of

what you would want to do

the most and go with that.

If you do take so many

things on at once,

everything will crumble

and leave you with

nothing.

Organize your

time. Set aside time,

whether it be in study

hall or at home, to study

your hardest subject.

Perhaps Spanish

vocabulary doesn’t stick

with you, or SOH CAH

TOA doesn’t show itself

clearly in your mind when

taking a test. Take a few

minutes every night to

study them, and they’ll be

imprinted on your mind

soon enough. Don’t forget

to do this with homework

as well.

Ask a teacher for

help. It seems like an

obvious

solution,

but many

students are

reluctant to

do it. Teachers seem to get

frustrated when students

struggle and then put up

the lame excuse, “I didn’t

understand it,” instead of

actually coming to them

and asking questions.

They’re the teacher, so

they’ll know what to do.

Relax. You can’t go

throughout life feeling

stressed all of the time. It

can lead to depre

anxiety. Instead, try taking

a break from life by

listening to music, writing,

going for a walk, or

spending quality time with

your friends. You’ll feel a

lot better and more

refreshed instead of

trudging through the day

like a dog through mud.

Let’s review. A few

things that are necessary

for a student to do is to

stay within their limits,

find what times work for

them, go to their teachers,

and take a break every

once in a while. If you

follow these tips, you’ll be

one step closer into getting

that good report card. And

remember, giving up won’t

help anything, keep your

head high and good luck!

Terrific Track

Track season has

started for both the

boys and the girls at

Chrisman High School.

Each student who has

decided to dedicate

his/her spring to track

has a promising

outlook on the season.

This year, the ten boys

are being coached by

Tom Kulbartz, as the

head coach, and Josh

Cavanaugh, as the

assistant coach. The

boys practice every day

after school from 3:30

to around 5:30. At

practice, freshmen like

Kade Hollingsworth,

Kenny O’Brien,

Brandon Brinkley,

Beau Snedeker, Lane

Avenatti, and Tyler

Owen work on a

variety of skills ranging

from sprint to long

distance, to relays and

long jump, and do not

forget the high jump

and triple jump! Our

juniors like Wyatt

Avenatti, Colton

Wyatt, and Alex Voigt

all combine together to

run long distance,

while our lone senior,

Byron Brinkley, mixes

it up with relay and

long distance running.

Overall, they work

hard as team

competing at places

like Danville High

School and Tuscola.

The girls track

team is coached by

Nathan West, where

he helps pump up and

improve nine of our

Chrisman High

School’s girls. This year

Shelby Warner and

Kelsey Potter are using

their muscle to throw!

Megan McKee,

Meghan Ingram,

Cassidy Baugh, and

Jordyn Lunger are

focusing on long

distance! Sarah Ellis

and Avoree Switzer are

keeping it quick by

improving their sprint

times. Finally, Elora

Thomas is

participating in a

myriad of events that

include the 400, long

jump, high jump, and

hurdles! Their first

meet in at Tuscola on

March 28th! Come out

support the track

teams next

Thursday!

Donkey Ball &

Other Things

The FFA is

holding Donkey Ball on

March 29th at 6 pm at

the high school gym.

Yes, it

sounds

just like

it is! The

players

ride

donkeys and play

basketball at

the same time!

Multiple

teams are

gearing up for

this

competition.

To be on a

team you have

to be at least

sixteen years

old and on the

FFA, Fire

Department, or Horse

Riders Organization.

Tickets are

only $6.00 if

you

purchase

from one of

the twenty-four FFA

members, but if you

want to buy a ticket at

the gate, it will cost

$8.00. The Donkey Ball

fun only lasts a couple of

hours, so make sure to

come out and support

the FFA.

Oh, and a quick

recap on FFA

week: Chili Day

went awesomely,

there were tons

of people who

showed up to

experience barnyard day,

especially that delicious

popcorn,

and all the

FFA

members

thought

they had

great

community

support

this year!

When

talking to

FFA

member Kile McKee, he

commented, “Even

though

FFA

week

was cut short

because of the snow day,

we had a great week!”

Prom

By: Destiny Stipe

This year’s prom is right around the corner. This year’s theme is “Lace and Grace.” Prom will be held at Georgetown fair grounds on April 6th. The dance will be from 8-11 p.m. There will be no meal this year. Grand march will be starting at 4 p.m. in the high school gym; all are welcome to attend. Grand march is where all of the prom goers show off what they are wearing. This is mostly for the girls to show off their dresses and dates. Coronation will be held at right after grand march. Junior Court Representatives are Wyatt Avenatti, Gunner Fletcher, Dalton Hoult, Cory Webster, Sarah Ellis, Megan McKee, Ashley Malone, and Hailey Marvin.

Senior King Candidates are Jacob Burch, Mike Cardona, Caleb Farnsworth, & Chris Hoult. Senior Queen Candidates are Brett Bishop, Katelynn Kindred, Dana Mitchell, & Hope Weir.

Good luck candidates!!

Cheerleading

On March 9th,

sixteen girls tried out for

the Chrisman High

School cheer team. In

order to be on the team,

one had to perform the

following: individual

dance, a group cheer,

three jumps, an

individual

cheer, a

sideline

cheer, and

an

individual

stunt. The

pressure

was on for

these girls because they

had to perform in front

of three judges: a past

cheerleader, an assistant

coach from Paris High

School, and the head

coach from Paris High

School. If the judges

thought the participant

was 80% or

higher, she

made the

team!

Fourteen

girls made

this year’s team. The

team consists of two

eighth graders, Brooklyn

Gale and Bailee Eslinger;

five freshmen, Lexis

Kime,

Meghan

Ingram,

Jordyn

Lunger,

Avoree

Switzer, and

Elora Thomas; five

sophomores, Taylor

Joiner, Shelby Taylor,

Bridget Mattingly, Shay

Yates, and Breanna Hale;

and two juniors, Megan

McKee and Sarah Ellis.

The captains of the team

were also announced!

Megan McKee and

Bridget Mattingly filled

the spots! This is the

biggest team that Mrs.

Gray, the coach, has ever

coached. Her and her

cheerleaders are looking

forward to more

stunting!

For last year’s

cheerleaders,

there was an

awards

banquet held

on March 20th.

Some of the

awards were Best

Tumbler, Most Spirit,

Sharpness, Best Jumps,

Most Dedication, Miss

Congeniality, and Most

Valuable Performer.

Also, the girls were very

expressive when it came

to discussing

Hope Weir

and Alyx

Lorenzon.

Because it

was their last

year cheering

at CHS, Lexi

Kime speaks for the rest

of the team when she

said, “We will miss them

so much and wish them

the best of luck.”

Art & Game Club! By: Haylee Clayton

Guess what’s being held from 3:10 to 4:30 on Wednesday and Thursday? The spontaneous, amazing, and spectacular art and game club of course! Obviously, you are already questioning this wonderful event. Don’t worry though; I have all of the answers…well…for the most part.

Why are these clubs so awesome? There’s free food! Honestly, I think that’s the best part, aside from the gaming and art making. People should definitely join these clubs. You don’t have to be in both, although you can be if you want to be. Anyway, in art club, you can do anything that requires creativity. You can draw, paint, and write, although the other two

are preferred. In game club, you just play a bunch of really awesome games. Currently, they’ve been playing a lot of zombie

games.

More people should definitely join art and

game club. One plus, if you’re already in an art class, art club is an

appropriate time to work on current class projects or make-up any missing assignments.

You don’t have to go every day and it’s alright if you miss one because there are two in a week. I’m not exactly sure about why it expanded

into two days. I guess you could ask Ms. V about that.

Anyway, as you probably already know,

our bomb-tastic art teacher conducts all of this. As I said, art club is a good time to

work on any class project, and with the ‘artistic leader’ being there, you can ask any questions you need to…appropriate questions at least. Our awesome leader is yet another reason to join. :D

The Unnamed Story By: Tyler Lowry

February 1 “Today’s top story is there really a miracle cure for longer living? Find out tonight on World News!” The TV went black at that moment. A loud rumble came from outside. I found myself rushing to the window, only to be shocked in what I found. The rumbling was coming from a low flying C-5 aircraft; the troubling part is we don’t live anywhere near an airport or even a military base for that matter. As I run for the door, I remember to grab my coat and keys. I run down to the carport only to find it to be useless; my car was out of gas. So I did the next best thing, I walked. I found myself walking for a few minutes when before I heard the crash. It shook the ground, as if a bomb has gone off. But it wasn’t that, it was anything but that. When the ground finally stopped shaking, I noticed a weird smell; I covered my nose with my shirt and rushed back inside. When I finally entered my apartment, I noticed that a crack in my window had formed and was slowly spider webbing out. When I went to look at the crack I stopped. There, outside the window was a ball of fire. The smell down in the carport was burning gas. The plane had crashed.

There was fire high above the building across from me. The crash was maybe a mile, but you could see the flames clear as day. As I looked out the window, I noticed the shock-wave coming through the high grass. It rattled the windows before shattering them. I was thrown back to the ground, hitting the table on the way down. Buried in glass and blood, I was unconscious. February 5 "He’s doing better, luckily someone found him when they did." These were the first words that I heard after waking, finding myself in a hospital room. As I looked around the room, I noticed that nothing electronic was working, as if the power was off. I tried to speak, but found myself without words, my throat was dry, and I’ve been out for awhile. I tried to get up, but as I was turning to get out of the bed there was a nurse urging me to lay back down. "You took a very nasty fall, and the glass has cut you up pretty badly," the nurse said, pulling the cover back over me. As I lay there, I found the mental power to fight through the pain and ask, "What happened?" The look on the nurse’s face got serious; she said nothing, just pulled the covers up. At that point, I knew something was really

wrong. But before I could say anything, the nurse was injecting something into the tube that led to my arm. I was out seconds later. February 7 “We need to evacuate the building. I know this might be difficult, but we need everyone out as soon as possible.” A stern voice echoed down the hall, “but what about the badly injured ones?” A soft but recognizable voice followed. “Leave them, there's no time!” After that, nothing, the hallways were silent. Something has happened, something even our own government doesn't want us to know. What could it be? At this question, I got out of the bed, walked around, and found myself at the window; there were huge amounts of fire around. It was a disaster. I had to get out of here and quick. Looking around I found the pants and shirt I wore the day the glass shattered, but the problem was they were covered in blood. As I looked around, I found there were no clothes, so I did the next best thing. I grabbed the covers off the bed and covered myself. When I walked out my door, it was chaos. People were rushing, panicking. I had to run, but I found that I was being forced to follow the crowd. When we exited

the hospital, everything was different. We were told to follow the armed forces. Then we were stopped. Each of us were given a full body inspection. They were checking, checking for something. When they got to the guy next to me, the doctor’s face got severally serious when he lifted his sleeve. His arm was bloody, as if bitten. They told him to follow one of the armed forces. When they got out of our sight, we heard the shot, he had killed him. Worried that I would get the same treatment, I started to sweat, my hands were shaking, badly, and the doctor saw it. “What’s wrong with you?” The doctor asked worryingly. “Dude, you just shot that guy! What the heck?!” I was almost in tears, afraid for my life. He seemed to loosen up, realizing I was just in fear. “Where have you been that past week? He wasn't well. We're trying to get rid of the ones that aren't safe.” After giving me a full check-up, he went onto the next guy. There were two more after that one guy who went to the morgue. After that, we were blind folded, I heard a thud, then another, then it was right next to me. They were knocking us out, and I was next, as quickly as possible, I ripped the blind-fold off and ran. They shot, I got hit once, but because of the adrenalin running

through me, I didn't noticed. I made it away, but I lost too much blood, I hit the ground, but before I passed out, I saw a face, a familiar face, then darkness. February 9 “Day 9 since the accident, I have found someone. He was shot in the shoulder, he's sleeping right now. Either that, or dead.” The voice was close. In my mind I was thinking, 'crap, I’m back in a hospital.' When I opened my eyes, I found myself in a tent, nothing near a hospital room, I sighed in relieve that I wasn't back in a hospital. I sat up, but my shoulder hurt horribly that it sent me down, but when I laid now, I landed on a rock. I screamed in pain. There were footsteps coming closer. 'Great, this is when my life is taken.' But when the zipper of the tent opened, it wasn't a guy with a gun, it was a girl, a pretty girl too. When she saw that I was in pain, she helped me sit up. She retrieved the rock that was stuck in between the bandages. It hurt yes, but I didn't care. She laid me back down and with a voice of an angel she said, “Now don't go hurting yourself anymore, it was bad enough there was a bullet in you, we don't need a rock in ya too.” She smiled. When I finally fought the pain, I found my

voice again and asked, “Where are we?” The look on her face wasn't good, but she still answered, “We're outside of the town. All the cops in town are turning on the citizens. I'm assuming that's why there was a bullet in your shoulder, right?” When I finally got my story together, I replied, “Yeah, they lined us up, they inspected us, I don't know for what, but the guy next to me didn't get off to easily. They blind-folded us, then tried to knock us out. I ran, but I guess I’m not fast enough. That's all I can remember.” When I finished she wasn't smiling anymore. “The guy next to you, was there a bite mark?” After a few minutes of trying to remember, I replied. “Yeah, how did you know?” She looked like she was about to cry. “That’s what happened to my uncle last week. He didn't do anything wrong, this guy came up to him, and just bit him in front of the cops. They shot him and the other guy...” at that point she was in tears. With all my strength, I held her. She cried into my arms till she stopped. She fell asleep in my arms. So very carefully, I re-zipped the door close, and laid down with her, and fell asleep.
