About the ArtistsFrom the China Wall to Carnegie Hall, the Canadian Brass has gained international renown for

their brilliant virtuosity and remarkable ensemble playing. The ensemble was formed in 1970 and has since been heard in concerts across Canada and the United States, as well as Europe, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the Soviet Union, and China. It was in 1977 that these players were chosen to tour the People's Republic of China in a cultural exchange program arranged by Canada's Prime Minister Pierre Trudcau.

The summer of 1983 was a busy one for the Canadian Brass. They participated in the opening ceremonies of the new 70,000-seat B. C. Place Stadium in Vancouver, which was broadcast live nationally on CTV. In June, at the Edmonton Commonwealth Stadium, the Brass performed before Prince Charles and Princess Diana, 60,000 fans, and an international television audience during the opening of Universiade, the World University Games. In August they played to a capacity audience in a Mostly Mozart Festival concert in New York's Avery Fisher Hall.

Their current 1983-84 season includes appearances with the New York Pops and Skitch Henderson at Carnegie Hall, the Philadelphia Pops and Peter Nero at the Academy of Music, and guest appearances with the symphony orchestras of Springfield, Indianapolis, Chattanooga, Denver, and Minnesota, as well as over 75 recitals. A number of new recordings this season includes a special album of music-making with the Berlin Philharmonic Brass.

The Brass's repertoire ranges from classical works to ragtime works to avant-garde works. Faced with a literature that included only a handful of great works for brass when they came together, the players have become unabashed transcribers of music from all areas. They have thus steadily gained a reputation for forging new paths into the uncharted areas of music for brass.

With their 24-karat, gold-plated matched instruments specially designed and craftcd by the late Rcnold Schilke of Chicago, the Canadian Brass has been seen by television audiences on such diverse programs as Camera 3, the Today show, Sesame Street, the Bravo TV cable network, and most recently with Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show and on PBS with John Williams and the Boston Pops.

The group performs this evening for the first time in Ann Arbor under Musical Society auspices.
