Volume 47, No. 6 The Call of The Pewee www.peweevalleyky.org June, 2015 The City of Pewee Valley has lost two dearly loved and long-time residents this year.. Gin Chaudoin, long considered our Town Historian, passed away in February at the age of 93. Gin was full of stories, from dancing the Charleston as a child for the soldiers at the Con- federate Home, to first-hand accounts of the resi- dents who became the characters in The Little Colonel books. Her brother, Bill Herdt, was 98 years old when he passed away in May. Bill, owner of Herdt Motor Company, succeeded his wagon maker father and blacksmith grandfather in the family business, retiring at age 94. As a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he was stationed in Alaska where he put his skills as a mechanic to use maintaining the motor pool and servicing aircraft. He was a member of the Amer- ican Legion, Pewee Valley Town Council, Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church and a firefighter with the Pewee Valley Fire Department from age 12 - 90. As recently as age 88, he was still driving the truck on fire runs. Bill’s story was recorded and preserved for the oral histories of the City, and can be found on the Pewee Valley History website. The family also made several donations to the Pewee Valley Museum, and the millstone, on display in Central Park near the fish pond, was donated to the City by Gin, Bill and their sister, Sis Marker, who is still a resident in Pewee Valley. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their fam- ily members and all of those whose lives have been touched by these remarkable individuals. In Loving Memory DoN’T foRGeT!! The Pewee Valley Summer Picnic will be held on Sunday, August 1st from 6pm to 10pm. Music by The Monarchs, plus lots of food and family fun!

Special Event/Temporary Sign Permit Ex-emption Request - The City Council discussed the request received from St. James Episcopal Church to exempt churches and non-profits from the $20 sign review fee or consider a reduced fee for multiple temporary sign permits. It was noted that the current Special Event & Temporary Sign Permit process is working well and that all the permits are for churches and non-profit groups. The fee offsets the expense of staff and City At-torney review. The Council agreed to continue with the current process in place.
