So how do you bowl an

in and out swinger?

The wrist and ball positions below illustrate the different ball and wrist positions for the out and in-swingers: Position of the wrist and ball for an out swinger

Position of the wrist and ball for an in swinger

Another key component to swing bowling be it traditional swing or reverse swing is the condition of the ball and that is why you often see fielders and bowlers shining the ball on their pants and sometimes various other less legal things to change the condition of the ball and the consequently the path it travels through the air.

Hopefully this article gives you some insight into the skill of swing bowling and allows you even greater satisfaction the next time Dale Steyn sends a batters off stump cart wheeling out of the ground with an unplayable swinging delivery

SCORER BOXThe linear form of cricket scoring is growing in popularity and, as the preferred scoring system of the ICC and Cricket South Africa, has now been introduced at all levels of cricket in KwaZulu-Natal. Linear scoring consists of two sheets – a worksheet and a summary sheet. During the match every ball is recorded on the worksheet and information is then transferred from the worksheet onto the summary sheet.

The summary sheet is exactly what its name suggests, ie a summary of the match. All the match details and players’ stats are included on a completed summary sheet. The KZN Cricket Scorers’ Association runs linear training courses at the start and end of every domestic cricket season. The one-day course includes both theory and practical training.

Trainee scorers are provided with a training manual and blank scoresheets. Once scorers have completed the linear course and have at least six months’ practical scoring experience with a Club or School, they are then invited to write the Linear Intermediate Exam. Qualified linear scorers who have at least three years’ practical experience as a Club scorer can then submit completed scoresheets to the Association for evaluation. Scorers who meet the standards required by the Association will then become eligible for selection for first class matches. Scorers wishing to be trained on production, computer and internet scoring must first qualify as a linear scorer as per the above.

We at the KZNCUA are very proud of the achievements of our very own Babalo ‘Babs’ Gcuma. In September this year CSA announced the elevation of Babs to the National First Class Panel.

Babs has dedicated the last ten years to his umpiring and has worked extremely hard to get to the National Panel. It was with elation that we heard last month of Babs’ appointment to CSA’s international exchange program with New

Zealand. CSA has exchange programs with New Zealand, Australia and India. Babs’ appointment to New Zealand will see him officiate in two first class games over there in the New Year. This will be an amazing experience for Babs as he will

gain knowledge and experience of umpiring in foreign conditions and unfamiliar players. We all wish Babs well on his travels and we hope that this is the first of three overseas umpiring experiences for him.

Congratulations Babs and we hope you will fly the flag high for the KZNCUA.

UMPIRES CORNER

Leo Maistry has been scoring at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead for thirty years. Leo began his scoring career in 1984 when he used to hang the numbers on the old telegraph scoreboard.

He later became a book scorer and a fielder spotter, flashing a red globe next to the player’s name whenever he fielded the ball. By the time the telegraph scoreboard was replaced with the modern electronic version ten years later, Leo had earned the nickname “memory man” for his ability to identify all the players from both teams.

Leo moved into the scorebox in 1994 where he very quickly mastered the various computer functions of the electronic scoreboard. Leo is now an accomplished scorer in all seven of the official scoring roles at Test match venues and is the Association’s only genuine “all-rounder”. He is also widely recognised as one of South Africa’s leading Duckworth Lewis managers.

TOWNSHIP DEPARTMENT

The office is continuing setting up structures that will improve the standard of Township/Rural cricket.

This structure is made up of 8 senior session coaches and their mandate will be to supervise and mentor new coaches.

This structure has been running since July before the 2014 Township tournament. They visit different areas and they assist in the coaching of Elite players, monitor all coaching in the areas and also assist in DDCU clubs activities.

Most of our department staff has been given top accolades to serve and be involved in the provincial set up, it has always been my personal goal to provide the system with Players, Coaches and Administrators and I feel we are slowly heading the right direction.

I will like to wish all our Township staff who would be representing us at the National level all the best namely:
