3 ARTIST HIVE, SEPTEMBER 2013
artist hive background Artist Hive was originally a collective action project ‘CBD Gallery’(CBD, 2005-8) founded by our group of artists on Elizabeth street in Brisbane’s CBD. This gallery hosted scores of large experi-mental art exhibitions, events and collaborations. This group became our first Artist run Initiative, ‘Brisbane Local Arts Collective’ (BLAC, 2008-12), when we moved from our gallery space. Under this banner we designed, initiated and produced dozens of community engagement public art works for Council, Corporate and local culture sector businesses, including and combining chalk, mural and workshop projects. These two groups have been remodelled and rebranded as the ‘Artist Hive’ (EST 2012). This is a membership based business model designed to create opportunities, incomes, and career devel-opment for its member artists.

6 ARTIST HIVE, SEPTEMBER 2013
With numerous art commission sales to her name and exhibitions all around the city – including Brisbane City Library, CBD Gallery, Westpac Bank (Queen St) and Hotel Grand Chancellor – Janet has well and truly made a name for herself in the art industry.
Janet shares her thoughts with us on what it means to be an artist, the combination of the art and business worlds and why Politians should support young artists.
CD: What does being an artist mean to you?
Janet: Being an artist means I have the freedom to express myself. Art permeates every aspect of our lives from architecture, literature, fashion, music and culture, so it’s a privilege for me to be known as an artist, knowing I can positively impact people. It’s also important for me to provide community support through my artwork. I have donated artwork for auction and my paintings have even reached higher auction sales than prints by Norman Lindsay, Dali and Pro Hart. I’ve had a pretty intense year and I’ve noticed that I’ve created a lot of artwork, so I think art is a cathartic outlet for me when life gets a bit frantic. Art keeps my life bal-anced.
CD: You’ve had a number of exhibitions – how did all these come about for you?
Janet: I sold my artwork to friends and family when I was a teenager, but the exhi-bitions started when I was a backpacker living in Cairns in 2005. I was having so much fun travelling and was running out of money fast, so I painted some pop art paintings and exhibited them at a local res-taurant. I also did a live painting session at the restaurant front with the eccentric chef, which generated some interest and got my name out there. Soon after I moved to Brisbane and I approached the restau-rant owners at what was then known as Satchmos in West End. I had an exhibition for a month and sold quite a bit of artwork, which gave me the confidence to approach more venues and exhibit my work regu-larly.
CD: Do you think exhibiting your work at restaurants over the years has impacted the progression of your career?
Janet: Frequent art exhibitions have defi-nitely impacted on my career path. Being an artist has inspired me to incorporate artistic skills into my freelancing business. It’s not just a hobby for me – it’s something I want to develop throughout my career.
CD: You’re in London at the moment, could you tell us a bit about your ventures over there?

7 ARTIST HIVE, SEPTEMBER 2013
Janet: I’m taking a break before fully launching my Janmac Creative business – visiting friends and family and travelling around the UK. But I have ended up do-ing quite a bit of work while I’ve been here including business writing, website copy and pop art commissions for clients based in the UK and Dubai. I’m also plan-ning my business and creating the Jan-mac Creative website content and lay-out, so I’ve been pretty busy!
CD: You advertise yourself for a lot of corporate related gigs, is this in a sense ‘to pay the bills’?
Janet: The corporate gigs do pay the bills, but I’ve also been quite successful with art commissions and exhibitions over the years. I’ve already sold seven private art commissions this year and have at least 10 more lined up to com-plete by the end of 2013. Until recently, I was a Senior Proposal Coordinator at an engineering consultancy and I still in-jected some creativity and my quirky personality into the job! I have always been creative yet business minded, so it’s important for me to balance these skills throughout my career. This is what I aim to achieve through Janmac Crea-tive. Merging the business world and art world will hopefully set me apart from
the rest.
CD: How do you put aside your individual creative expression and lock yourself into giving your clients what they want?
Janet: Luckily clients have been very open to my suggestions and creative input. I have only had one painting that I didn’t promote online because I wasn’t overly keen on the colours used. However, a client loved it and it was exactly what they wanted. So as long as the client is happy then I’m generally happy!
CD: Do you think Brisbane offers sufficient opportunities and outlets to young artists?
Janet: I’ve never had any issues finding Brisbane venues for exhibiting my art and I think more and more ven-ues have been open to exhibiting artists’ work during recent years. There are plenty of galleries, workshops, and events to check out during the year too, so I think Brisbane is generally a good arts hub for young artists. However, I think it’s important that politicians realise the importance of supporting young artists. As I men-tioned previously, art permeates many facets of society, so it’s important for the arts industry to be sup-ported in the long term.
CD: Do you have any advice for Brisbane artists who are looking to take the next step with their art?
Janet: Okay. One, confidence is the key to success. Two, network, network, network. Three, constantly im-prove your skills. Four, be inspired. And five, master social media.
If you’d like to check out some of Janet’s work, she currently has exhibitions at Verve Café , The Joynt and The Hideaway.

This project is all about profiling and promoting found object art and

13 ARTIST HIVE, SEPTEMBER 2013
On the 14th of September Artist Hive produced both large feature chalk art as well as a community engagement program at Redcliffe Festival! We had a talented and gen-erous team of artists come along to help out and a great effort from the community. Creating chalk art at the wonderful waterfront while the sun went down was a treat for everyone!
