Volume 3, No. 9 FORTY-TWO CANADIAN CHARTS COMPILE AN IMPARTIAL SURVEY OF CANADA'S TOP TWENTY CANADIAN CONTENT SINGLES Week of April 26, 1965 THE BUTTERFINGERS The Butterfingers don't exist. They are actually a group of pick up musicians that were hired to do a rock commercial for Mac - Laren Advertising Agency. The group was nameless when they found out their commer- cial was gaining attention with teens. Over- night the group became named and very quickly a name was found for their "A" side. Their first record was "Baby Ruth" by the Butterfingers, and the old cliche "re- leased by popular demand" was kept out of their advertising, but this was the case. Twenty-four year old Tony Tudhope of MacLaren's produced a commercial for Curtiss Candy to sell candy bars to teens. He scouted around for musicians and teenagers that would create the genuine teen image for this commercial. Teens easily recognize the adult approach and Tudhope set out to use real teen musicians, real teen music and ended up a winner for the Butterfingers, MacLarens, Curtiss, and the newly formed Canadian Red Leaf label. Glenn "Big G" Walters discovered the record (which was at the time a white label promotion disc put out by the ad agency to promote the product in conjunction with their radio and TV spots). He programmed the single nightly and teens headed for record stores to ask about the single that really had no name. Glenn's very popular "Wing Ding" pro- gram later adopted the tune as a theme. Stan Klees of Red Leaf heard the record on Glenn's show and got on the phone to track it down. It was finally the recording studio (Hallmark) that had the first lead to who could be contacted. Klees called Tudhope and overnight the single was released to a waiting public. Sales zoomed and chart listings were inevitable. Many GMP stations airing the the spots found that the disc was suitably GMP for exposure. The record was a great success in Eastern Canada. Even in the western provinces where the candy bars were not avail- able and the spots weren't run, the single experienced a great deal of programming. Terry Bush (guitarist with Robbie Lane's Disciples) and Doug Riley (organist with the Silhouettes) wrote both sides of the single. Presently a follow-up is in the planning stages. The record is still experiencing remarkable sales, and the French-Canadian market is just now starting to react to this single. Also in progress is a deal that will make "Baby Ruth" available throughout the world. "Baby Ruth" is just another indication that Canadian teenagers are willing to accept Canadian made hits. Even an instrumental (which takes a great deal of breaking) can make it in Canada. You'll be hearing more from the Butterfingers even if you never seen them .. collectively. NEXT WEEK THE REGENTS

THE BUTTERFINGERSThe Butterfingers don't exist. They areactually a group of pick up musicians thatwere hired to do a rock commercial for Mac -Laren Advertising Agency. The group wasnameless when they found out their commer-cial was gaining attention with teens. Over-night the group became named and veryquickly a name was found for their "A"side. Their first record was "Baby Ruth" bythe Butterfingers, and the old cliche "re-leased by popular demand" was kept out oftheir advertising, but this was the case.

Twenty-four year old Tony Tudhope ofMacLaren's produced a commercial forCurtiss Candy to sell candy bars to teens.

He scouted around for musicians and teenagers that wouldcreate the genuine teen image for this commercial. "Baby Ruth" is just another indication that Canadianteenagers are willing to accept Canadian made hits. Evenan instrumental (which takes a great deal of breaking) canmake it in Canada.

Toronto: Members of thepress, radio and TV took

st4 time out to welcomeback one of Canada'smost deserving artists.Gordie Lightfoot's open-ing at Steele's Tavern indowntown Toronto (Apr.14) brought him back tohis old homestead andfriends as an inter-national recording artist. His Warner Bros. outingof "I'm Not Sayin' " hisown composition is fastestablishing his "Coun-try and Lightfoot" imagethroughout the North

American continent. He also penned"Ribbon of Darkness" for Marty Robbinsanother country pop tune that is adding tothe Lightfoot long overdue successful entryinto the music business.

"Baby Beatle Walk", one of Canada'sbig instrumentals by Al Martin Six, is abig part of the record scene in Germany.Release is on the Ariola label.

Yellowknife: H. Glick from Yellow-knife Radio Ltd. is concerned over thelack of stereo releases on some artiststhat could be hot sellers in his area. Mr.Glick points out that "We sell a lot morestereo than mono, and no matter what thetype of record is, it is ordered in stereo inpreference to mono. Stereo is here to stay".

Canada: Somewhere in Canada is agroup known as The Fab Four. Who theyare or what they are remains a dark secret. We understand they will be appearing withthe Rolling Stones tour and are slated for ashow at the O'keefe.

Record Jottings: Quality Recordshaving a lot of success south of the bor-der. "Shakin' All Over" by the Guess Whosis now an established hit in the US marketshowing on all trades and climbing many ofthe radio charts across the country. "Meand You" picked up by Red Bird and putout on the Blue Cat label has been men-tioned by Tempo (Tempo Wizard) and

Gavin. The Regents are scoring nicely onthis one in their own country and show upas No. 2 on The Cross Canada Chart(RPM). "Mrs. Brown" by Herman's Hermitscould very well end up to be the largestselling single of the year in the Qualitycategory. "Peanuts" a polka entry by theSunglows is also showing action fromcoast to coast. "Two Six Packs Away"could easily be a strong item for DaveDudley.

Pictured above at the Sound of Music Premierein Winnipeg are I to r Johnny O'Clock, CJOBEvening personality, Dunc Anderson, MusicDirector, Howard Neal, Director of the CJOBShut-ins Fund Board, Red Alix, CJOB Morningman and Laurie Mainster, manager of FosterAdvertising for Wpg.

Bouncing back into popularity onceagain is "My Fair Lady". Radio stationscan't seem to get enough of this AcademyAward winner. Record store reports on thisagain big seller have brought it back upto No. 1 on the RPM GMP chart. "HushHush Sweet Charlotte" has brought PattiPage back to the pop market with a popularitem that appeals to both GMP and TopForty programmers. "Ribbon Of Darkness"brings Columbia's country artist MartyRobbins back strong with this pop -countryentry, which was written by Gordon Light-foot. Jimmy Dean's recent visit to upperCanada gave his new waxing of "The FirstTime Ev'ry Morning" the boost it needed.Don't overlook the flip "Awkward Situ-ation" a well expressed narrative by thenow familiar Dean Drawl. "S.O.S." byKenny Chandler is making the Columbiafolks happy sales -wise as it begins toshow up on charts across the country.

Toronto: George (Mr.Broadway) Wilson willbe personally conductingthe third annual tour toEurope via LufthansaGerman Airlines. Citiesincluded in the tour areBerlin, Hamburg, Copen-hagen, Stockholm, Oslo,London, Paris, Frankfurtand Cologne. George, who has made this tripbefore and has a greatknowledge of all citieson the tour, informs usthat one of the most fas-cinating and excitingpoints of interest on the

trip will be the trip down the Rhine bysteamer which winds in and around thecastles and vineyards on the way to Col-ogne. The tour leaves from Toronto Sept. 2.For further information drop a note toGeorge at CKFH in Toronto.

Dateline Kingston: Gary Parr cannow boast that the Guess Whos are veter-ans of the CKLC survey. Gary was one of

the first to chart "Shakin' All Over".Also showing good promise are "MeanWoman Blues" the Bobby Curtola entryand Jerry Palmer's "Don't". "Me andYou" is also showing up as a strong chartitem.

Dateline Winnipeg: Gary Todd dropsa note from CKY advising of his appoint-ment to the post of Director of PublicService for the western giant. The 'KYFortune Fone promotion created a greatdeal of interest with CKY listeners. Iflisteners answered their phone with thecorrect phrase e.g. "CKY Plays MoreMusic" he snaps up with a prize of $100.A new "Good Guy" was introduced to theCanadian midwest on St. Patrick's Day.Little Paddy Shamrock, the mechanicalleprechaun issued Irish greetings andintroduced songs from the old sod through-out the day.

Kirk Northcott signs in with news ofCJOB's participation in the WinnipegBoat Show. A big crowd pleaser was the'OB Weight Tabulator. Red Alix the AMpersonality who was holding forth at the'OB display reported many smiles andchuckles when instead of their weightlisteners were treated to a humourouscomment or a carton of Tab, the low cal-orie drink by Coca-Cola. Beefing up thestage show were The Travellers andRickie Layne and Velvel.

Bob Burns of CJAY-TV and the manresponsible for the current success of TheBuess Whos sends news that an LP willbe released by Quality in the very nearfuture also that their follow-up single willbe hitting the air -waves before too long. The boys are experiencing an overwhelm-ing number of requests for PA's but arerestricting their appearances to the Winni-peg area so as to allow the necessarytime to study for their finals which comeup next month.

Dateline Windsor -Leamington: LouTomasi, Operations Manager at CJSP re-ports that a promotion giving away twofree tickets to the Rolling Stones Show inLondon kept the switchboard lit up fortwo hours and drew calls from listeners upto 66 years old. Four special switchboardoperators had to be called in to handle theinflux of calls which came in at a rate ofone every 30 seconds. A breakdown ofcalls originating from...was tabulatedand ran as follows, 35% local, 20% fromEssex (surrounding area), 24% from Wind-sor and 20% from Detroit. This is all themore startling when one realizes thatCJSP is a daytime station. With a stationas powerful as this in the backyard of the50,000 watt foreign station in Windsor, which apparently does very little topromote talent from the country in which itis situated, what an opportunity to leadthe way in airing good Canadian record-ings. The change may even be a welcomeone for listeners on both sides of theborder.

Dateline Edmonton: Harry Boon nowProgram Director of CJCA sends news ofhis promotion and the move up the ladderof Dalt Elton to the post of manager. Thisleaves a vacancy in the Music Director'sdepartment for which Harry is awaitingapplications.

Dateline Medicine Hat: Pat Pearsonsends along the new CHAT Top Fiftysurvey which shows a good percentage ofCanadian content (see Cross CanadaChart). Pat handles the 8PM-1AM showwhich features Top Forty material. Anexperiment in the late afternoon 4-5:45PM

using teen oriented material has causedtheir teen ratings to soar.

Dateline Regina: Hank Secord, Banffrecording artist, and presently holding thehorses at CKRM from midnite to dawn hasa complaint and we agree. He writes"You've dropped the C/W portion in RPMbecause you get no response to the top10. Could be the fella's, like myself, can't compile a top 10 because we haven'tthe material. Get the companies to move sowe can make a move to help Canadiantalent. and believe me we could move inthe same stride as the States, musicwise". Hank also points out that he readsabout the same artist every week in RPMand wants to know what about Earl Roach,Orval Prophet, Shirley Field, Paul Menard,Tommy Hunter?

Winnipeg: The CJOB Shut -Ins Fundpresented a gala Canadian Premiere of theHappiest Sound in all the world - TheSound of Music (Apr. 1). The proceeds fromthe SRO night were turned over to theShut -Ins Fund to help individuals, familiesor groups who are unable to obtain assist-ance from some other source. CJOB as-sumes all administration costs associatedwith the fund. Over 6 thousand dollars hasbeen raised in the past year. CJOB per-sonalities Red Alix, George McCloy andDunc Anderson were on hand to receivethe response of the first nighters. Theprogram carried interviews with JulieAndrews and Christopher Plummer.

Dateline Lloydminster: The letter re-ceived from Allan Young Production Man-ager at CKSA was just oozing with en-thusiasm over the new Johnny Harlow re-lease "Let's Take A Chance Tonight".Al dubs this the top recording in 1965 for

Halifax: "Frank's Bandstand" (CBCMusic Hop) has become so important to theMaritime teen scene that a membershipclub has been instigated. We just receivedour large badge and charter membershipcard. Our thanks to Manny Pittson, Pro-ducer of the show. These items will findtheir place into the RPM archives. Thanksagain.

Weybum: The "Swingin' Gentlemen"of CFSL note that they are happy to findthat most Canadian produced sides are im-proving with every release. Saturday after-noons both stations (CFSL Weyburn-CJSLEstevan) feature an hour long show ofCanadian talent on their "Swingin' AcrossCanada Show". One of the disappointmentsseems to be the lack of sales at the localrecord bars. Bobby Curtola, Terry Blackand Wes Dakus seem to be selling well butthe newer artists are taking a little longerto be recognized.(See "Mailbag" this week)

A few of our letterscome from radio peoplewho experience dif-iculties probably com-monplace to many inthe industry. The follow-ing is an example."Dear Walt: I'm Big BadBert Fowell from CFSLWeyburn and I've got areal problem. I work theTEEN BEAT program(3:30-8:00 PM) and it'sreally getting me down. These kids are just nothip, the tunes that aresupposed to go don'tdown here. Sure we putthem up on the "Swingin

60" but the teens don't dig the soundsteens do elsewhere. The sound of "almostrhythm and blues" is the big thing fromwhere I come from. But here it's still theold sounds like THE CRUSHER that goesplaces. That was #1 for quite a long time.Sandi Shaw's "Girl Don't Come" is big,but not around here. They really put thisnew sound down. So here's a plea goingout to all the people that will help. Tellme fella's, what do I do? I'd sure like toget these teens moving but they don't evenmove at a dance. Man I've seen them atdances and they just stand and tap theirtoes."(signed) Bert FowellDear Walt:-

Possibly the incident I am going torelate will be as much of an EYE-OPEN-ER to others who still believe (as I didonly a few weeks ago,) that there is nocommercial potential for Canadian artistsand Canadian made singles.

Recently I stopped off for a late snackat a restaurant. I was somewhat disturbedby three teenagers who plunked themselvesdown noisily three seats away from me atthe counter. Later I was grateful that theywere noisy enough that I overheard most oftheir conversation. After noisily dwellingon a great deal of nothing, they finallystarted to talk about records (as manyteens do). To my surprise most of theirconversation centered around Canadianartists and their records. They talked aboutthese hits with reverence.

I came away a wiser man. I was gladtheir youthful enthusiasm (usually inter-fering with my digestion) had made memore aware of Canada and the great pos-sibilities of our own producing. I onlywish I had been fortunate enough to havehad about six of Canada's leading ProgramDirectors sitting with me.

From now on it's Canadian talent allthe way with me.

Sincerely,"REFORMED"

P.S. The Beatles, DC5, and the rest of thegroups weren't mentioned once. Howeverthe Supremes were.(ED: The remarks you have just read arepossibly the best example of "You neverknow till you try!" It has been a slow pro-cess convincing the programmers of Canadathat we have it all here. If we can't findit, NOBODY is going to find it for us.)

NOT TO BE LEFT inthe minority, I wouldlike to join the count-less many in the musicindustry and make a per-sonal comment on thegreat milestone theDIRECTORY is. I mightalso clear up some ofthe misconceptions andpacify some of the"johnny come latelies".The value of the direc-tory as a reference isunsurmountable. One ofthe major contributionsthat quickly come tomind is the radio listings

singles to country stations, and generallythe record companies have suffered from alack of info on where to send what. I knowthat presently radio lists are being redoneto comply with the listings that radiostations themselves have supplied for thedirectory. To get this thorough listing wasnot easy. In many cases there were threeforms sent out to stations and many phonecalls made, and every attempt was made tomake the listings complete. Even so,these listings are a tribute to the Editorof RPM.

Even with all the phone calls, tele-grams, letters and orders for extra copiesof the directory, there have been manycomplaints that "We were overlooked." I

would like to make it definitely clear thatMr. Grealis worked long and tirelessly toassure as complete a list as possible, buttrue many who hibernated didn't get listed.

Any constant reader of RPM couldhave seen the great amount of valuablespace that was dedicated for many weeksto encourage readers to take advantage ofthe free editorial listings.

As great an achievement as the firstdirectory is ... it is but a stepping stoneto the next directory. Obviously the un-believers took some convincing, and thereis already a good indication that the nextdirectory will be still bigger and better.

LXinding MoaidSandy Gardiner Ottawa JournalYou Gotta Move Jim Torres"Instrumental sides are slowly fading fromthe popularity stakes and this disc doesn'tstrike me as exceptional. There is noquestion that it moves, the only questionis where. COULD."Frank Cameron CHNS HalifaxIt Isn't Easy The Staccatos"This one definitely has today's 'sound'.If other DJ's get on the bandwagon, wecould turn this into a national hit, some-thing that we Canucks still seem to belacking. Good sound, good tune, goodartists. SHOULD."

Glenn Walters CKEY TorontoDon't You Make A Fool of Me Pat Hervey"This is probably Pat's best ever. Greatsounding record. Has everything to makeit go. Very well put together. Great."SHOULD".Johnny Onn CJME ReginaDon't You Make A Fool Of Me Pat Hervey"Good sound, but still lacking that some-thing to make it an instant 'hit'. Strongarrangement plus catchy lyrics will rate itplays in most areas. It could catch on in afew areas and become a hit. COULD be ahit."Glenn Walters CKEY TorontoRemember The Face Allan Sisters"Our Canadian talent is sure coming. Al-most everything you send me is good stuffand hard to pick apart. I actually sit andtry to find fault, and again here I thinkthis record is another hit potential.SHOULD be".Bob Wood CKCK ReginaRemember The Face Allan Sisters"Red Leaf coming close to hitsville. Thisis another good sound that doesn't initiallyimpress, but the second spin sounds betterand the third better still. COULD".Chuck Benson CKYL Peace RiverOur Love Has Passed Jack London"Jack got his hit status with a more up -tempo number. This one seems to be alittle too drawn out (3:35). However, younever can tell. COULD".Sandy Gardiner Ottawa JournalOur Love Has Passed Jack London"This is Jack's best to date although Ifeel the best part of the disc comes at theend. I won't rave about it although Lon-don's tower is rapidly rising. The flip,'Sparrows and Daisies' shouldn't be over-looked. COULD".Bryan Olney CKWS KingstonOur Love Has Passed Jack London"Great Song... Well Recorded... Thisshould be the one to really put Jack Lon-don & The Sparrows in the national spot-light. It could be another 'House of theRising Sun'. One of the best Canadian re-leases this year. SURE".

Bryan Olney, CKWS KingstonSpring Rains Rita Curtis"It's an interesting melody with the twolanguage technique, but I don't think it's

the stuff hits are made of. It's fine GMPmaterial however the survey stations willprobably not take too much notice of it.COULD".Johnny Onn CJME ReginaRemember The Face Allan Sisters"Strong possibilities for this one. It hasteen -appeal in the lyrics which tell ofanother broken heart, etc. If given achance (along with a few extra spins), itshould be a hit. SHOULD".Glenn Walters CKEY TorontoNever Send You Flowers The Paupers"This has already been established as ahit on 'Wing Ding' and from all reactionit's sure to be a big hit. SURE".Sandy Gardiner Ottawa JournalRemember The Face Allan Sisters"Another Red Leaf side out in Englandbut still lacking the knockout punch thatcan be obtained across the pond. It shouldgain plenty of exposure but won't be aface to remember all over the hit lists.COULD".Bryan Olney CKWS KingstonDon't You Make A Fool Of Me Pat Hervey"This is the best for Pat in a long time. Both sides are really done well and thisdisc can put her right on top of the hitlists coast to coast if it gets played. Withexposure this can be a smash. SHOULD"
