STARRY NIGHT GALA

The Temple Sholom Selma Maisel Nursery School (SMNS) is excited to announce the expansion of its current offerings to include a full-day program for children as young as six weeks old through Pre-K, beginning September 2018.

“The results of this expansion will include a school brimming with activity throughout the whole day, as well as dozens of new families, increased flexibility, and greater resources for our entire Temple Sholom community,” said David Cohen, Nursery School Director.

The holiday of Passover has four names:

• Chag Ha-Pesach (the Festival of Passover)

• Chag Ha-Matzot (the Festival of Unleavened Bread)

• Chag Ha-Aviv (the Festival of Spring)

• Z’man Cheiruteinu (the Time of our Freedom)

The Torah most often refers to the holiday as Chag Ha-Matzot (the Festival of Unleavened Bread) even though we usually refer to the holiday as Passover.

It's within these two terms that we can best discern a special Passover/Unleavened Bread spiritual message.

Matzah symbolizes that our ancestors left Egypt in haste and did not even have time for their bread to rise, and so they left with unleavened bread.

When the Torah refers to the holiday as Chag Ha-Matzot, we recall that we quickly leaped so that we might follow God into the wilderness.

And, with this reminder, we wish to recall our historical faith in God.

The name by which we call the holiday, “Passover,” is a reminder that God “passed over” the Jewish homes, sparing the Jewish

people from the tenth and final plague; the “Slaying of the First Born.”

Thus we remember both the catalyst of God’s historic redemption of our People, and then the willingness of our People to “Go Quickly” to follow God.

God makes for the possibilities of our redemption, but we have to be willing to take the necessary steps by which to secure the needed redemption.

By referring to our holiday as both Chag Ha-Pesach and Chag Ha-Matzot, we remind ourselves of the need to constantly work with God to make for better possibilities within our lives.

The primary goal of the Passover Seder is to experience our Exodus from Egypt.

As we celebrate Passover together with our family and friends, let us remember that the Exodus was only possible because of Divine opportunity, and human willingness to take advantage of the opportunity.

And, with this historic remembrance, let us actively seek out the Godly opportunities available by which we can quickly seek to make the world a better place.

The five letters of the Hebrew name Yisrael have been interpreted to be an acronym for all seven patriarchs and matriarchs. The Yud stands for Yaakov (Jacob) and Yitzchak (Isaac). The Sin stands for Sarah. The Resh is for Rivkah (Rebecca) and Rachael. The Alef is for Avraham. And the Lamed is for Leah. All seven accounted for.

When I think of Yisrael/Israel, I envision the Biblical kingdom of Israel, the land of Israel, the people of Israel and the modern State of Israel.

When I think of Temple Sholom I think of all of you — our matriarchs and patriarchs, and your families — and how together we make up the Temple Sholom community.

It’s your spiritual involvement, financial participation and volunteer work that makes us a vibrant and prosperous Jewish congregation.

When individuals commit themselves to volunteering on a consistent basis, they have chosen to donate their own time to support an activity that benefits others. Time is a very precious commodity; we can’t create, accumulate, acquire, buy or borrow time. Some of the strongest values — service and sacrifice — are shown when one places the needs of another above their own, including sharing their personal time.

Volunteers are critical for ensuring that Temple Sholom continues to be a beacon of Judaism and a place where all are welcome to pray, learn and belong to a greater community. To all of our volunteers, thank you.

It is this selfless volunteerism that recently made our 2018 Starry Night Gala such a huge success. We would like to thank

the Gala Committee, led by event chair Hillary Rosenthal, for giving their time and energy to create a memorable and enjoyable evening for all. This year’s Gala honorees — Phyliss Rakowitz, Beth Cutler and Travis Azous — also represent the finest in community service, care and concern, and we thank them for their commitment to making Temple Sholom better each and every day.

We are also very grateful to our Cantorial Search Committee, led by Shane Leahey and Meryl Sole, for working diligently to identify the most qualified candidates for our synagogue. They’ve organized a number of candidate visits and performances over the past year, and we appreciate their ongoing efforts.

I’d also like to recognize Derek Kaufman, our new Chair of the Education Committee. Through his leadership and vision, we have new momentum and a reinvigorated Education Committee with a mission to achieve best practices for our children's education and effective school operation.

As we head into spring, I wanted to pass on a note of thanks from the Board of Trustees and myself to our entire congregation for your 2017/5778 Kol Nidre support. Because of your continued generosity and involvement, we are the leading conservative synagogue in our area and we continue to grow.

Wishing you good health, happiness and enjoyment of freedom in this season that celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt.

TEMPLE SHOLOM LEARNING CENTER LAUNCHES SCHOOL-WIDE FAMILY PROGRAMMING

On December 10, the Temple Sholom Learning Center (TSLC) hosted the first of two school-wide Family Education Days.

Close to 75 families attended the three-hour program, which was centered on the theme of Hiddur Mitzvah (beautifying our mitzvot) and used the holiday of Chanukah as a starting point for discussion.

“Family Education is an important component at TSLC, as it provides us with a double opportunity: to provide parents a chance to engage with and learn alongside their children, and to demonstrate to parents the innovative approaches we use to make ancient traditions come alive,” said Barry Gruber, Director of Congregational Learning.

Throughout the morning, families rotated through hands-on learning activities. One station included an interactive candle-lighting workshop. Students took on the role of candles and music specialist Adam Feder reviewed the blessings and the order of candle-lighting.

Another rotation focused on the creation of a 16-foot-long paper menorah to be displayed in the Davis Lounge during Chanukah. The menorah was pieced together from tiles personalized by each family and represented a collective effort by individuals to create something meaningful and beautiful together.

“We came up with the idea for a large canvas chanukiah made from more than 400 pieces of contact paper,” said Eileen Robin, Executive Director. “The Temple Sholom Learning Center decorated the bulk of the tiles during their Family Education Day, and our nursery school children and Lunch ‘n Learn attendees added their own pieces too. The project became something that our whole Temple community could enjoy throughout the holiday.”

Following the Family Education Day, families were invited into the Social Hall for a community-wide Chanukah Celebration. The festive party included a “Maccabi Challenge” obstacle course, face-painting, a make-your-own edible dreidel station, and plenty of latkes and sufganiyot.

The school’s next Family Education Day will be held on Sunday, March 4 and will coincide with the holiday of Purim.

emergent curriculum guided by Jewish values and traditions. Both part-day and full-day children will experience Shabbat and holiday celebrations together, and classes in the full-day program will also be able to utilize the school’s unique educational spaces such as the STEAM Lab, Gymnastics Studio and Discovery Room.

Enrollment is underway for both part-day and full-day programs for the 2018-2019 school year. For more information or to schedule a tour, contact David Cohen at 203-622-8121 or [email protected].

Zoe is a 7th grader at Greenwich Academy. She loves spending time with her family, friends and especially her cat, Violet. In her spare time, she enjoys tennis, playing the piano, listening to music, traveling and photography. The highlight of Zoe's summer was attending a forensic science program at Brown University. As a Bat Mitzvah, Zoe looks forward to enriching her life and becoming a more active volunteer in the Jewish community. The Friendship Circle and Supermarketing for Seniors are two organizations where she hopes to make a difference.

Max is a 7th grader at the Horace Mann School in Riverdale, NY. He enjoys playing competitive basketball, travel water polo, singing in the middle school chorus, playing the piano and spending time with his friends and family. Max spends his summers at Camp Takajo in Naples, ME. For his mitzvah project, Max plans to coach basketball and peer mentor children with special needs. To Max, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means taking on the responsibilities of a Jewish adult and giving back to his community.

Julia is a 7th grader at Western Middle School. She enjoys playing tennis and basketball, as well as hanging out with friends and family. Julia spends her summers in California and at Camp Laurel South in Maine. For her mitzvah project, she wants to provide those less fortunate with all the supplies for a special birthday. Julia has always had a big passion for birthdays and baking, and wants others to experience the same joy. Becoming a Bat Mitzvah means a lot to Julia because she will become an adult in the Jewish religion, and can be a part of a greater community.

Alyssa is a 7th grader at Blind Brook Middle School. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She is an avid skier, spending much of her winter weekends up in Vermont. She also likes playing tennis and cheerleading. She spends her summer at Camp Wayne for Girls in Preston Park, PA. For her mitzvah project, she is collecting food items to sustain families in need during holiday breaks. She is packing them into backpacks and helping to deliver them to these families. WHAT IS A YAHRZEIT?Meaning “Time of Year” in Yiddish, this anniversary commemorates the death of a loved one. It is symbolized by the recitation of the Kaddish prayer and reading of the names of those dearly departed in the Temple. At home, a candle is lit on the eve of Yahrzeit to represent the soul and burns for 24 hours. Tzedakah, a Hebrew word for righteousness and signifying charity, is offered to the family in the form of gifts, donations, or simply emotional support. In this way, we remember our beloved.

Yahrzeit Candles are available for a small donation in the main Temple office.
