Though they certainly knew nothing about viruses, they knew about other forms of illness and disease. The Torah characterizes these as plagues visited upon the Egyptians by God. Some of the plagues enumerated in the Torah clearly were caused by microbes of some kind, perhaps deadly bacteria or viruses. But the cause of the plagues is not the issue, the reaction of the Egyptians and the Israelites is much more significant. Can you imagine the confusion and terror that the middle and latter plagues caused among the ordinary Egyptians? Their world was turning upside down. The agricultural cycle was in chaos. People were dying haphazardly left and right. Their farms were destroyed, they faced irreversible famine. Their social order was collapsing. Their leader, Pharaoh, a god, proved incapable of defending them. Disheartened, dispirited, disoriented - they were at a complete loss in comprehending what was occurring around them. Their once powerful civilization lay in shambles without any explanation or meaning. Of course they were ready to expel the Israelites, not let them go but to send them away, before any more death and destruction befell them. I hope that we do not reach the point of despair and desperation which the Egyptians surely felt, but we certainly can understand their situation as we contemplate our own attempts to cope with COVID-19. Our situation is even more complex. Our Jewish ancestors had an explanation for the suffering of the Egyptians - this was God's plan for teaching them a lesson and for freeing the Israelites from Egypt. What is our explanation? We are not even sure how this virus emerged and became a threat to us. And we no longer rely on supernatural explanations for events in the natural world. We trust science to reveal the secrets of the universe and uncloak the mystery behind nature. And while scientists and doctors will ultimately discover the secrets of COVID-19 and the means of combating and defeating it, the fear of the still unknown virus and its effects are disconcerting and disturbing. Just as the plagues in Egypt came to an end, so to will the pandemic of COVID- 19. And we have every confidence that a solution to this problem will emerge sooner rather than later. In the meantime, just as our ancestors patiently, but anxiously, awaited the redemption from Egypt, so too, we must keep our faith and bide our time continued on page 4]

Rabbi’s Message Sitting in my study, in virtual lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak, I am struck by the relevance of our situation to what our ancestors experienced in Egypt. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Maybe it’s time… I had an entire message planned out, based on those three words. They would be followed by: to rethink your routine. The message was going to be profoundly different, three weeks ago. The whole message popped into my head during services on Shabbat, the week after I wrote my prior message. I was so pleased to have had my inspiration so early. But then everything changed…so quickly. So now my message is: Maybe it’s time to rethink your routine. Yes, we are all rethinking everything about life. Everything that held true yesterday, is changed today. Tomorrow is completely unknown. Many are unbelievably frightened. I may be completely overwhelmed, but I am not frightened. You too, should not be frightened. We will get through this. I do know that our synagogue will never be the same. I hope that the rethinking we are doing today will make us stronger tomorrow. We have outstanding leadership in our shul on many levels, working hard for us, to make sure that we can make it through this storm in one piece. We are changing our thinking on services, gatherings, meetings, and

educational functions. We are rethinking our use of technology, and rather than taking the old approach of shunning it, we are embracing it. Like a business in changing times, or creatures throughout history: those who survive, do so through adaptation. We will survive, and be even stronger. I receive lots of messages from congregants every time an email, phone tree, or flyer goes out: What was wrong, what was right. Suggestions from those who know about other congregants: their needs and their limitations. When the event happens, we learn and adapt. We are going to try and accelerate the pace, so that what you need from your shul, is there in the future. Make sure as we roll out new programs, you engage and get involved. The only way we can improve is through participation and feedback. I don’t know where I will be when this message gets back to me in the mail, but I hope that it will be during calmer times. …and I hope there will be toilet paper on the store shelves. Wishing you all good health, Alan

The Rabbi's Discretionary Fund Most synagogue funds are used for the benefit of the synagogue, but the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund in par-ticular, is for the benefit of people in need in the community. Unfortunately, as the needs have increased, con-tributions to the Fund have decreased. Keep making the contributions that you have, but if you are able to give something additional for this Fund, please do. All donors are acknowledged, both with a card and in the Bulletin, unless you wish your donation to be anonymous. Thanks and best wishes.

Rabbi’s Message [continued from page 1] until COVID-19 is no longer a threat. Hopefully, by the time we sit at our seder tables in a few weeks, we will look back in time and give thanks for the great deliverance that God wrought for our ancestors and for us. Chag Sameach v'chasher. Rabbi Art Vernon MEMBER ACCOMPLISHMENTS Eric Post Named AJC Long Island Region Director Eric Post has been appointed Director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) Long Island Region. He previously served as Associate Director of AJC’s New York Region, covering the city’s five boroughs. “Eric Post has demonstrated a profound commitment to AJC’s mission, an ability to lead on implementing new initiatives, and collegiality,” said Melainie Maron Pell, Managing Director of AJC Reginal Offices. “Notably, following the attack on Chabad of Poway, Eric created and spearheaded #TriStateAgainstHate, a successful campaign in which AJC offices in New York, New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester/Fairfield paired synagogue and mosque members to attend each other’s service.” During his tenure at AJC New York Eric Post oversaw interfaith and intergroup outreach to the city’s diverse communities, including managing the AJC-led local Latino-Jewish Coalition and Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council. In addition, he oversaw the ACCESS NY young professionals’ program, as well as AJC New York’s annual campaign. “Having grown up on Long Island it is quite meaningful to be returning,” said Post. “For nearly 20 years, I have been engaged with AJC’s nuanced, centrist, and thoughtful advocacy. I look forward to working with the AJC Long Island Board and supporters to further AJC’s legislative and diplomatic advocacy, and interfaith bridge building in Nassau and Suffolk counties,” said Post. He received his B.A. and M.A. in International Affairs from The George Washington University.

SECURITY TEAM UPDATE Congregation Shaaray Shalom is doing everything possible to provide a safe facility for prayer and community. Our Security Team has made some difficult, yet necessary decisions to further tighten the secu-rity for the safety of our congregation and their guests. A new lock requiring keyed entry has been installed at the side door entrance. These keys are the type that cannot be duplicated; and the Security Team will decide on the distribution of keys, as well as maintain as list of key holders. On Shabbat and Yom Tov mornings, the Security Guard will continue to be stationed at the front, main entrance to the building, and these doors will remain open during the service. All synagogue members will enter through the main entrance. The Security Guard will have a current membership list, and may ask for your name as you enter the front doors. Please comply with his request. All non-members MUST enter through the front door, only. We appreciate your understanding of the heightened security precautions that Congregation Shaaray Shalom is taking. Our intent is to have our building safe and secure for all of our congregants. Thank you. Leah Frankel 1st Vice President

The procedures listed above will continue to be in place when the shul reopens for services.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL PURIM EVENT CSS was again a co-sponsor of the most unusual Megillah Reading in the local area. Who but CSS would go to a kosher Chinese restaurant to join with a few other local congregations to enjoy a joint reading of the Megillah and then be treated to a great luncheon? Fifteen of our congregants joined with 4 other congregations to make this wonderful and very important day a real enjoyable event. Rabbi Vernon’s wonderful interpretation of the story, done gangster style was very, very entertaining. We look forward to next year to see what new idea the Rabbi comes up with.

SISTERHOOD PANDEMIC 2020 Like us all, I find myself in exile, having been advised to stay home and away from others. Because I've opted to go out into the world -- just two more times before finding

myself once more behind locked doors-- I am now being treated like a pariah. Perhaps I should relocate to India where I can join the Untouchables. At least I would fit in. Trying to think positively, having to stay at home can have some benefits. This is a good opportunity to do spring cleaning, use up all the food we've accumulated over the winter (enough for months), prepare for Pesach, etc., etc. After three days my own industriousness has allowed me to accomplish: nothing. Sadly, there will be plenty of time to putter around if this pandemic lasts as long as predicted. On a more positive note, while we languish at home we'll be able to look back on our Purim luncheon. A pleasure, and we'll have plenty of time to enjoy all the snacks in our Purim baskets. If we're careful they should hold us until Pesach. Will there be sederim? Will our friends and families return from Florida tanned and healthy? Will they be able to safely enter airports or even get on a plane? The news has frightened us all, and we are wise enough to listen to warnings. At least we can still visit each other on the phone or internet. Let's hope that the May issue of the Bulletin will find us safely out and about and finally seeing each other in the flesh as we celebrate our pre-Mother's Day Brunch. Don't forget to fill out the Beat the Clock and luncheon reservation forms elsewhere in this Bulletin. Have a zeissen Pesach, even if you are forced to attend a virtual Seder. Be well and be careful. If you've given a thought to the passing of Florence Kruman and Addie Chersevani, be grateful they have been spared this ordeal. May they rest in peace. Shalom, Helene

Who's Who of Sisterhood Officers and Chairwomen

MEN’S CLUB ON THE MOVE The men’s club was happy to sponsor the Shabbat Across America event for well over our 15 years We thank the Cantor and Rabbi Vernon for a very insightful learning of the importance of Shabbat and end our evening with a great meal provided for us from our in house caterer Doni P a little change in our menu to keep things lively and timely and it was just a great evening attended by about 30 people. we hope everyone en-joyed he evening and we look forward to our next event. We were anticipating a reprise of our very successful program of Friday Nite Live led by our guest Rabbi Ari Vernon who unfortunately will not be able to attend due to the quarantine. We hope to do this program later in the spring. The Men’s Club is once again supporting the Yellow Candle Program of distributing a yellow candle to each every family to light on Yom Hashoah and to remind every one in heir household the importance of remembering and teaching that this day must not be forgotten so it can never happen again. We hope this endeavor will still be possible.
