In 1999, the motto for the 50 th Anniversary of the OSU Periodontal Pro- gram was: “Building on the past, shaping the present, charting the fu- ture.” In regard to the past, our educational program has a rich history of almost 68 years with 261 graduates. As we grow older, some of our alums transition to other activities and some pass away. For those who have died, I want to remember these graduates (and faculty) by memorializing them in The Cutting Edge. We will begin in this issue by remembering Tim Moore (see page 5). Tim matriculated to our program in 1961 and graduated in 1963 with a certificate and Master’s Degree. His thesis was entitled “A clinical and histological evaluation of the horizontal sliding flap operation in Rhesus monkeys.” and John Wilson was his advisor. Tim was a wonderful man with an awesome family and he was always supportive of this program. He will be greatly missed. If you know of other alumni who have died, please let me know and, if possible, provide me with a short summary of their life. A list of alumni (with notations of those who have passed away) is provided on pages 20 - 27. Please help us to correct any errors that you observe in this list. Dear Alumni and Friends,

In the typical busy academic environment, such as our Gradu-ate Periodontal Program, time goes by very fast. Since our last communication in November 2015 a lot of activities and events have taken place, while we had several opportunities to enjoy the successes of residents and alumni.

In early June of last year we celebrated the graduation of the class of 2016. All four of our residents successfully completed their clinical training, defended their MS thesis, and received

their certificate. Dr. Khaled Altabtbaei will remain at OSU, where he is pursuing a PhD degree at the College of Dentistry. Dr. Monica Prasad Gibson has moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to pursue her academic career; she has been appoint-ed as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medi-cine and Dentistry of the University of Alberta. Dr. Brian Roy has moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he has started pursuing private practice; he recently purchased a solo practice. Dr.

Lamees Alssum, our 2015-2016 Chief Resident, returned to her native Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), to continue her academic career as Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics of King Saud University. All of us here at OSU are very proud of the accomplishments of our four newest colleagues and we wish them the best in their future pursuits. Congratulations to the class of 2016!

In late June we welcomed the newest members of our Buckeye Periodontal family, the class of 2019: Dr. Chris Brett, who is a Pennsylvania native and a 2016 graduate of the Columbia Uni-versity College of Dental Medicine (New York, NY); Dr. Anuja Doshi, a Mumbai native and a 2014 graduate of the

Government Dental College in her hometown, at Maharashtra

University of Health Sciences (Mumbai, India); Dr. Najla Kasabreh, who is a 2012 graduate of the Faculty of Dentis-try, University of Jordan, in her native Amman (Jordan); Dr. Elizabeth Nesmith, a Michigan native and a 2016 graduate of the Midwestern University School of Dental Medicine (Glendale, AZ); and Dr. Wichurat Sakulpaptong, a native of Bangkok and a 2013 graduate of the Faculty of Dentistry, Mahidol University (Bangkok, Thailand).

Notable achievements by alumni and current residents during

the last year include: Drs. Pin-Chuang “Patrick” Lai (’15), Chris Ludden (’15), Dimitrios Malamis (’15), and Nicolas Robitaille (’15), attained ABP Diplomate status this past May. In February 2016, Dr. Sukirth Ganesan (’18) was se-lected to present his research at the Midwest Society of Peri-odontology Graduate Research Forum, where he received an Honorable Mention. Subsequently, Dr. Ganesan competed as a finalist for and won the Orban Prize (Clinical Science) at the 2016 AAP annual meeting in San Diego. Congratulations for the successes!

Residents and their faculty mentors have been actively pur-suing research publications. Below is a sampling of recent articles, published in the last 18 months, from our recent graduates (highlighted names):

Cont. from page 2 Residents and faculty enjoyed presentations from guest lecturers, including our Adjunct Faculty: Dr. Andreas Pa-rashis (Tufts University), Dr. Andrea Pilloni (La Sapienza University, Rome, Italy), and Dr. Paul (Pao-Ying) Lin (OSU ’91). Presentations were also given to the group by alumni, including Drs. Thomas (Wen-Fu) Lai (OSU ’90) and W. Patrick Kelsey V (OSU ’09). The residents and I appreciate your continued support of the Program and I hope more of you will join us in such activities. If you would like to do so, please contact me at [email protected]. Other speakers who shared their knowledge and interests with us were Drs. Win-Ping Deng (Taipei University) and Gian Pietro Schincaglia (West Virginia University).

For this coming year, we look forward to hosting the 2017 VOLPE Research Prize competition. The VOLPE Prize, which is named in honor of Dr. Anthony Volpe, is an award recognizing the best clinical research in periodontolo-gy by students in dentistry. Additional information will be forthcoming on the Division website.

I always enjoy meeting you at the annual AAP meeting and this past year’s meeting in San Diego was no exception. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with many of you, particularly those who have made the west coast your home, and to share memories and ideas. I look forward to seeing you all again in the near future, and especially when your plans bring you to Columbus for a return visit. With my warmest regards, Dimitris Tatakis

Hua‐Hong Chien, DDS, PhD

Greetings to the alumni and families. I am pleased to report that our predoctoral program continues to offer high-quality peri-odontal education to our dental students. Our students have demonstrated the ability to conduct and accurately record the findings of a comprehensive periodontal examination, arrive at a diagnosis, establish a prognosis, and formulate a treatment plan that is integrated with the patient’s other dental needs. Students continue to perform well on National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) part 2. The scores of NBDE part 2 in periodontics from our students closely mirror how well they have been mentored and prepared by all periodontal faculty members. The profile reports in Periodontics showed that OSU students scored 1.65 to 1.93 standard deviation higher than that of the national average for the years of 2013 to 2015. The College of Dentistry launched an electronic health record system - axiUm on January 19, 2016. This is a significant mo-ment for our college in which more than 168,000 patient records were converted from “Windent” to “axiUm”. A more contempo-rary dental education has been offered to our students as ax-iUm has brought digital radiography and electronic dental rec-ords together, enhancing the quality of patient care and improv-ing care coordination among clinics. Three awards for excellence in periodontics were given to the graduating dental students of 2016 and presented at the Senior Awards Ceremony on May 5th, 2016. The faculty members in the Division of Periodontology selected Dr. Matthew Mason as the recipient for the American Academy of Periodontology Den-tal Student Award for Achievement in Periodontology, Dr. Ni-cole Scheckelhoff as the recipient for the Northeastern Society of Periodontists Senior Student Award and Dr. Megan Fellows as the recipient for the Quintessence Award for Clinical Achievement in Periodontics. This year, we added a new award named “The Lewis Claman Periodontal Award” which is sup-ported by “The Lewis Claman Periodontal Endowment Fund”. This award recognizes a student who has excellent academic and clinical performance in periodontology and is considering a career in academic dentistry.

The award was presented to Dr. Matthew Mason, who is cur-rently a first year periodontal resident in the Periodontology Master’s Program at University of North Carolina. A 3-day continuing education course entitled “Implant and Related Surgery Training Course” was hosted by the Division of Periodontology from October 19 to 21, 2015. This course was a combination of in-depth lectures, over-the-shoulder demonstrations and a frozen cadaver head hands-on work-shop on soft tissue grafts, minimal invasive extraction using piezo-surgery followed by ridge preservation or immediate implant placement, direct sinus augmentation with DASK kit, GBR with titanium mesh, and harvesting a mandibular ramus block graft. This is our second time to offer a dental implant continuing education course to general dentists from Taiwan. A total of 11 dentists from Taiwan and 6 OSU dental alumni attended this course and completed the survey. We were delighted to have received very positive feedback from them. We had five 4th year dental students from Taiwan’s China Medical University as visiting student externs from August 22 to September 2, 2016. These students were scheduled to observe in the Comprehensive Care Clinics, Advance Pros-thodontic Clinic, and Postgraduate Periodontology Clinic. This type of observership has been offered to dental students from Taiwan for seven consecutive years since 2010. I hope to see you at the upcoming AAP 103rd annual meeting in Boston. Regards, Hua-Hong Chien .

Dr. Timothy Edward Moore passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 8, 2017, in Tulsa at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Hamman Moore and they recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. He is also survived by his 6 children: Dr. Tim Moore and his wife, Nancy; Cynthia Baty and her husband Dr. Ben; Amy Page and her husband, Brent; Mary Smithson and her husband, Jay; Jennifer Moore; Melissa Clark and her husband, Chris. He had 19 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren and they all enjoyed their "granddad" on various levels.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Leon Edward and Elizabeth Sprouse Moore. Dr. Moore was born on January 20, 1933, in Cleveland, OH. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fra-ternity at The Ohio State University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1954. He then graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1959. He served in the Navy as a dentist for two years prior to returning to Ohio State University to attend the Masters of Science Program in Periodontics where he graduated in 1963. He then received his Diplo-mate status from the American Board of Periodontology in 1969. In addition to having a private practice for decades, he was an adjunct professor at Ohio State Dental School and he was also the Health Commissioner in Grandview Heights, Ohio.

Dr. Moore was very involved with his professional organizations, including Southwest Society of Peri-odontists, American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, Oklahoma Dental As-sociation, Tulsa County Dental Society, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He was also a member of the Board of Forever Living Products. In 1978 he moved his family to Tulsa, Oklahoma to become a professor at Oral Roberts University School of Dentistry. Later he was an adjunct professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in the Graduate Periodontics Department. He enjoyed his teaching, patients and the dental profession. Dentistry was truly an important part of his life. This dedication is shown by the fact he practiced dentistry for over 50 years. He retired from teaching and private practice in 2012. Dr. Moore had a tremendous passion for music and he loved playing the saxophone and clarinet in the Tulsa Praise Orchestra for nearly 20 years.

Additionally, he played in the Tulsa Community Band and with his church orchestra. As a proud Ohio State Buckeye, Dr. Moore enjoyed traveling and maintained a positive outlook on life. Life was "FANTASTIC." This kind, caring man will be missed by his family, friends, former patients, former stu-dents and colleagues.

"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8) Dr. Moore is a former Deacon at South Tulsa Baptist Church and an Elder at Tulsa Bible Church.

Honor Roll of Giving

Gifts to the Division of Periodontology can be conferred to the following funds: Endowed Chair for Periodontology: To help ensure the long-term health and stability of the Division of Periodontology at The OSU College of Dentistry, alumni and friends of the division have established a cam-

paign to raise $1.5 million to create an Endowed Chair in Periodontology. For the division to not only retain outstanding faculty, but to also recruit new faculty to fill the open positions today and in the future, it must dis-tinguish itself even further from the other periodontal programs across the country. One of the best ways to do this is through the establishment of an endowed chair. For more information on what an endowed chair is and does or to talk about your interest in supporting this campaign, please contact Ted Backus, Senior Director of Development, at (614) 292-9307.

The George R. App Periodontal Endowment Fund: Interest from the Endowment is used to support graduate stu-

dent education and development with special interest in providing funds for travel to meetings by The Ohio State University periodontal graduate students.

Division of Periodontology Fund: This fund is used to support a wide variety of periodontal activities by the Division

of Periodontology in the College of Dentistry. More specifically this fund is used for but not limited to the pur-chase equipment for the graduate program, support of alumni activities (e.g. the annual AAP Buckeye Recep-tion, CE courses, mailings, etc.), endowment of graduate research projects, purchase of food for graduate stu-dent activities, etc.

The Lewis Claman Periodontal Endowment Fund: Interest from the Endowment will be used to support an award

for OSU dental students who exhibit clinical excellence in periodontics. Special consideration will be given to students who want to choose a career in academic periodontics.
