Member’s Profile - Ken Morrison A foundation student of the Bendigo U3A, Ken Morrison served on the inaugural committee after being encour- aged to participate by the late Jock Crooke. He conducted a Forestry Course and assisted Pat Reynolds in the first two Summer schools. He then became a drop-out and did not return until 2009 when he joined the Creative Writing Course under the stern discipline of Estelle. Ken was a Rats Castle farm boy (near Wodonga) and was educated at Leneva, Wodonga, Carey Grammar Boarding School and finally graduated as a Forester in 1949 from the Creswick Forestry College looking for the outdoor life. His appointment with the old Forests Commission of Victoria in 1950 was to the Strathbogie Ranges where he met Doris at a Barn Dance in the Strathbogie Hall and the romance resulted in their marriage in 1952. Doris and Ken’s life was governed by a dictatorial government department who transferred their Foresters at will with no grounds of appeal. Thus Doris and Ken saw residency at Yarram, Bendoc (the very outpost of the Department in East Gippsland) for five years, to extreme south west of the state at Heywood, followed by Marysville and Powell- town. Then in 1975 a favourable wind change brought them to Bendigo and civilisation where after 38 years they still feel newcomers. The old forests Commission required their Foresters to be expert in all aspects of forest management of the many and varied forests of Victoria. This included overall supervision and expertise in road engineering, fire protection, utilisation of both native and plantation timbers, plantation extension, regeneration of cut-over forests, forest recreation, budgetary control, recreation and the list could go on and on. For example Ken was a one man band managing 2500 sq. kms of mountain forests while at Bendoc, at Heywood there was a 500 acre annual pine plantation extension project along with 15 hardwood sawmills to be kept supplied with native timber saw logs. Maysville involved an alternative softwood species nursery and similar plantation extension target. Utilisa- tion of native timbers did not cease with the falling of a tree but the forester had to ensure it was replaced. Thus the one tree felled was often replaced by up to one hundred seedlings and because of the diligence of twentieth century foresters, the flourishing, healthy forests became the target of ultra-conservationists to be locked up as National Parks and a renewable resource being then unavailable for the use of mankind. The real stress involved fires. Thus personal summer movement was restricted, the waiting for the unknown to happen, the actual suppression and then the aftermath all took its toll. Ken can claim a wide knowledge of the Victorian forests because of his position of relieving forester during his time at Bendigo with duties covering the state from Corryong to Casterton and Mildura to Cann River. On retire- ment he did consultancy work, personally planted 85% of the trees on the Axedale Golf Course, was involved in Neighbourhood Watch, Friends of the Kennington Reservoir and is closely associated with the Bendigo Y Service Club whose prime cause is to financially support youth enterprises. He still walks the golf course and is addicted to tennis. He has recently compiled a History of Rats Castle for the Wodonga Historical Society. He is proud of his life partner Doris, in the manner she has always adapted to the trying living conditions and turmoil thrust upon her as a mother and forester’s wife and then finally successfully setting up her own profitable business, Nit-N- Not, in Allan’s Walk. They were blessed with two girls, two boys and five grandchildren.

FROM THE COURSE COORDINATOR

ADVANCE NOTICE of TWO POSSIBLE COURSES I am hoping for one at least of these for early next year. They are The Life and Times of Anthony Trollope (2 sessions) The Development of Secularism: A Philosophical Approach. (2 sessions) People have expressed interest in these courses. Please continue to tell me Keith Thompson.

C’MON RING THOSE BELLS! It is good to hear Chimes, having been briefly into reces-sion is making a comeback.

CALL FOR INTEREST It has been suggested to me that we could have a course on “Music Appreciation” If this interests you please let me know.

MATHS TEASER To all of you tackling the Maths Teasers, thank you for your encouragement. The one this week about the rats in Mayfair may need a hint to get you started. Remember the fundamental theorem of arithmetic that every number has its own unique set of factors. These factors can be found with patience from the equations given and the problem solved.

ART GROUP The afternoon Art group (Mondays) has had to cease. Our thanks go to Beverly Barclay for leading it. The morning group (Mondays 9:30-12:00) continues but at present is full.

ELEMENTARY MATHS A small but select group found a new appreciation of the basic stuff we thought we knew all about. Thank you to David Shields

CONVENERS MEETING 11th October I am writing this 30th Sept in anticipation! Thank you to those who could come to the Conveners Meeting 11th Oct. PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hi all

The October social gathering speakers from Bendigo Community Health Services were both confronting and informative. Diabetes type 2 is increasing and we all have to take care to avoid the consequences. Exercise and diet are im-portant preventative measures. Special thanks to Arto, Jean and Keith who set up and to all who helped in the kitchen and with chairs.

The ‘brainstorming’ session about a new working group, which was to be called ‘Pastoral Care’ was productive. The discussion ranged around what we as a group could do and it was decided that a more accurate name would be a ‘Support Working Group. This is to be endorsed by the CoM. We talked about both support of existing members and support for people to join and enjoy our activities. Watch this space and if you need assistance please let any committee member know, see BUZZ for phone numbers.

We are progressing with our future accommoda-tion. We now have two moving plans to be endorsed by the committee. Plan A is to move in the second week of January. Then registration day would be the last week of January giving us the third week to settle in. Plan B is to stay where we are and move in March 2014 at the end of our contract. Any offers for helping at both locations would be great, particularly packing and unpacking the books.

I hope that you all read the article in the Bendigo Advertiser on 2nd October. Good picture and thanks to all who contributed. Please send/give members of the committee photos that you have so that we have them for future publicity. We do need the permission of people in the photos.

Cheers

Alison

~ NEWS AND REPORTS ~

Lighthearted Humour …

My Grandmother started walking 5 kms a day when she turned 60, she is now 97 and we don’t know where she is.

I love long walks, especially when they are taken by other

people.

If you are going to try cross country skiing, best to start with a small country.

SOLUTION TO SEPTEMBER MATH TEASER

Suppose the number on the train leaving FTG was N.

Then the number leaving UFTG was ( ).

The number leaving Upwey was

The number leaving Tecoma and arriving at Belgrave was

= B

Turning this around we have

and

and

4B-35 and

and

and N = 64B – 588. N must be positive so the least B can be is 10.

If B = 10 then N = 52. If B = 11 then N = 116 but fewer than 100 left FTG so ten arrived at Belgrave.

eBOOKS: Companies like" Kobo” and “Kindle” offer a library of books for reading but there is a charge for the service. This can become quite expensive but with Bendigo (Goldfields) library, the library card gives free access to all books. The books can be downloaded to be read on any “Tablet” (including “iPads”) or on your Laptop. For one thing this saves you the trouble of the time and journey to the library! Tom Dewhurst has prepared notes for the three methods of access to “eBooks” and can be used in the Wednesday morning computer classes.

Creswick camp for U3A bushwalking group.

This year’s bushwalkers camp was held at Adekate Uniting Church campsite at Dean near Creswick. It was fully catered and accommodation was in bunked dormitories with clean, warm bathroom facilities along with recreation, dining and meeting rooms available for our exclusive use. Some walkers came for the whole five day camp whilst others came for less but all enjoyed walks together. Two members brought their caravan/mini vans but shared meals and facilities with us.

Each day a walk was organised for those interested and alternative activities listed on a communal board to encourage sharing which happened in a smooth fashion.

With Creswick and Ballarat nearby there was plenty to do and thankfully the weather was on our side. As a first timer I am won over. I had a wonderful time and enjoyed the opportunity to get to know my fellow walkers better by eating and walking with them all day. Our food was terrific and the camaraderie each evening at pre-dinner “drinks” set us up for further fun that evening at cards or completing a jigsaw. The camp was so good the organisation was seamless and thanks have to go to Judy Johnstone along with Helen and Max Elgin. Highlights are always the majestic beauty of the Australian countryside and this area did not disappoint but I will not forget those amazing humongous fungi we found near Mt Beckwith. I learnt about birds and flowers and trees from experts at no cost. The only question to grapple with is, where to next year?

Bev Ormerod...a weary but happy camper.

News from Inkspot, Market Place, Bendigo who

support U3A Bendigo by supplying ink cartridges for our Computer Classes.

Inkspot can supply U3A Bendigo members with new printers at wholesale prices.

Some points from Sharryn, the Life! Program Facilitator, Bendigo Community Health Services, who was guest

speaker at our Social Gathering on 25 September -

*In Bendigo 58.9% of people are overweight - the 2nd high-est in Victoria. *In 2001 there were 2,050 people in Bendigo with Type 2 Diabetes; this figure had risen to 4,819 in 2011, a rise of 135.8% in 10 years.

We were all encouraged to - *Watch what we put on our plate - 5 serves of vegetables a day, 2 serves of fruit,

*Read food labels and reduce sugar consumption (a can of soft drink has 8 teaspoons of sugar!)

*Walk the dog (or if you haven’t got a dog, walk with a friend) *Limit the time spent sitting watching television,

but perhaps the most beneficial tip of all -

Just don’t sit and watch television - stand up and do gentle stretching exercises in the advertisement breaks - good advice for us all!
