British Biker CooperativeDedicated to the Preservation of the British Motorcycle
The British Biker Cooperative (BBC) is a unique group of individuals dedicated to the preservation of the British motorcycle. The BBC was established in 1977, and has remained active in all aspects of British motorcycling since.
Our membership encompasses all British motorcycle enthusiasts. The collector, purist, racer, tourer, and riders of all backgrounds find contentment in our organization. Together we create a cooperative, networking the contacts, ideas,
and enthusiasm essential to ride and appreciate British motorcycles, most of which are virtually extinct.
The BBC is an incorporated entity governed by a Board of Directors and Officers elected biennially. Our yearly membership stands at over one hundred members, of which many own several British motorcycles.
Annually the BBC sponsors meetings, a rallye and bike show, a benefit, a family picnic, a dinner, and a holiday party. We also participate as the BBC in many other motorcycle related events.
We publish The British Steel, a quarterly (or more often) periodical including stories and photos of events, cartoons, drawings, poetry, technical tips, and limited advertisement.
To become a BBC member you must own a British motorcycle, represent the BBC in a respectable manner, and pay the annual dues.
We are British riders. A unique group of individuals. Lovers of a lost, but not forgotten British art.

The Editor’s Points & PlugsHello again, and welcome to the May issue of our newsletter. I’ve had to rush this issue due to some conflicting tasks, so if you find a few errors or omissions don’t be surprised. Check out the “Ask the Experts” column and the new “classified ads” section to see if you might have some questions for our experts or perhaps you’d like to clear out some of that swap meet stuff you were always going to use one day. You can also use the classifieds to ask for that rare piece that is bound to be laying around in someone else’s garage or attic just gathering dust.
There are five events in the May calendar to give everyone a reason to go for a putt. Maybe the weather will cooperate and give us that extra incentive to try something different this month. Nothing kills my desire to ride faster than rain and cold. I mean rain and hot: O.K., cold and dry: O.K., but rain and cold: stay home.
While we’re on the subject of excuses to ride, I received this excellent excuse from member Tommy Knox concerning the famous Springfield Mile as follows:
“I am a BBC member living in Springfield, IL. I am also the sec/newsletter editor of a local bike club Vintage Iron Riders. The Sprigfield Mile is held every Memorial and labor day weekend drawing riders and enthusiasts from all over the country. We have a Park and Display for vintage(25 years and older) right next to the grandstand where we welcome all to come and see the vintage bikes. There is no charge for parking or showing visiting bikes. It is a fun scene and some great racing on a famous track. If any BBC members are interested in participating they can contact me [email protected] or see me at the rally in July. I would be happy to help arrange a motel etc.Tommy Knox”
As always, please contact me with any tech tips, articles, or cool pictures for the next newsletter coming out around the middle of June.

Concluding a decades long investigation the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has decided to issue a recall notice for the majority of British motorcycle manufacturers to address the alleged tendency of these machines to leak oil. Doug Strick, head of the NHTSA, says “it is now apparent that these machines actually do leak oil, due to design flaws and manufacturing defects, leading to unsafe slippery conditions for both riders and other vehicles traveling behind them. Our scientists and technicians have spent countless hours trying to get to the truth behind the rumors.”
The affected manufacturers include: AJS/Matchless, Ariel, BSA, Norton, Royal Enfield, Triumph, & Vincent. The model years involved are from about 1950 to 1983 with a complete list to be issued in the near future.
The exhaustive impartial investigation used modern scientific techniques and testimony from industry officials.
In the early 1990’s the NHTSA called Dennis Poore, head of Norton Villiers Triumph (NVT), to testify on behalf of the British motorcycle industry. While unable to attend himself, his widow informed officials that “I’ll be sure to pass along your message the next time I see him”. Although direct input from the heads of the motorcycle industry was scarce, there were defenders from related industry leaders. Representatives from Yamabond, Loctite, and Permatex all testified that the problem was not the fault of the motorcycles, but rather “caused from the use of extra tiny oil molecules (ETOMs) by the greedy oil industry thus increasing demand for their products.”
Undaunted by the allegations of ETOM use, NHTSA scientists released their findings with the comment that “the owners of these motorcycles have suffered too long and it is time to put this controversy to rest by asking that the original owners of these bikes take them back to the dealership of purchase, along with this recall notice, and demand a permanent solution.”

As of today, April 29, 2012, my Triumph 500 race bike is a runner. Over the last few weeks, Pat Hanson and I have put on a brutal pace getting the bike to this point. I transferred the Triumph to Pat’s shop to get some real tough fabrication work done. Then we transferred it to MATC where I worked on it last week. Finally yesterday, we finished up the fabrication. After discovering a poorly grounded wire, the bike started first kick. I was able to run it up and done the road to test it and also to heat cycle the head. There are a few things left but all in all, it’s done.
Thank you to the British Biker Cooperative for the support. I received a check that I spent on leathers and my road race school that I will be participating in next Saturday at Road America. Steve, your contribution went to grips and Yamabond No. 4. Special thanks to Pat, Doug, Chuck, Bob and John. Your efforts are appreciated.
After I complete race school, I will be able to apply for my racing license through AHRMA. I am hoping for number 931. It’s has a little historic reference for me. And speaking of racing, my first race is at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI. We will be there June 8 – 10. Come on out, join the fun and support vintage racing!
I have included some pictures of my most recent updates.

Hi Folks, Well Madison was a blast a big thank you goes out to the Slimy Crud guys for their hospitality and the beer; there was a lot of beer. Thanks to Kevin for puBng together a great tour at the Old Sugar DisEllery and Al for the hotel. ColeGe tells me we had a very good night for product at the Barrymore plus we picked up a new member. Thanks Jim, ColeGe, Indian, Peggy, Mary, Kevin, and Carol for working the event. Sorry if I missed anyone. The rest of the weekend will remain anonymous there really was a lot of beer and some of the best Brandy I’ve ever had. Not to menEon the ride to the two dollar beer leaving The Farm.
The Run to the Sun is on the twenEeth and for me this ride holds a lot of memories, I believe of the last eighteen years I’ve only missed two of them. This is normally the start of riding season for me, my son Skyler took his first motorcycle ride on this run in a Harley side hack 15 years ago, man Eme flies. I always have a good Eme with TC and I hope everyone will get their bikes and come out for the day. The new update is coming out over the next few days or you may be reading this in it. I would like to know what you think about the new format, the meeEng is at one. If you can’t make it you can E-‐Mail me at [email protected] or call at 414-‐429-‐0574. Got any ideas for future riding events I would be interested in hearing about?? Something you don’t like about what’s going on?? Drop a line; come to a meeEng. We can’t fix it if we don’t know what’s broke. Till then Pat

Excessive Anti-seize on Spark Plug threads
Below is a link to an excellent discussion of an ignition problem caused by excessive anti-seize compound on spark plug threads. For those of you who don’t want to watch the whole thing, I’ve summarized the discussion.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zw7d8B8ETw&feature=player_embedded
Main Points• Most common anti-seize compounds are conductive• Excessive anti-seize can cause severe ignition problems of mis-firings and
backfiring.• Anti-seize can squeeze out of threads onto the electrode causing it to become
non-conductive.• Use anti-seize sparingly, or not at all, on spark plug threads and don’t put any
near the end of the threads.• Dielectric grease in spark plug boots helps the insulator to maintain it’s
insulating properties in addition to helping with installation/removal.• Use a torque wrench on spark plugs.
In the past I have always used anti-seize on the spark plug threads, but I will be much more careful in the future about how much and where it gets applied. Another consideration is if you use anti-seize should you torque to the manufacturer’s specification, or should the torque be reduced? I have read several opinions on the web and my conclusion would be to reduce the torque readings by 15% - 25%. Other views are to just torque to spec., or to torque to the lower end of the manufacturer’s spec. For example, a typical range is 11 to 14 foot pounds. If you use anti-seize, then torque to the 11 foot pound figure. If a range is not given, then use the 15% - 25% figure. My Norton calls for 15 foot pounds, so I’ll use about 20% less (12 foot pounds).
I suspect that there are lots of different opinions, and it would be interesting to hear from our member shop owners. The above information on torque values and use of anti-seize are my own opinions, so do your own due diligence!
Cheers,
John Pendell
Tech Tip Number Two
Dan Matte Says “CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE!”
Page 19
“Ask the Experts”
BBC member Allen Bower asks:“I'm currently on the reassembly side of my 1970 T120R restoration project and I have a question regarding fork oil. My 1970 vintage manual says to use sae 20 or sae 30 oil, however is there a modern forkoil that would be a better performance choice these days? Thoughts, recommendations, manufacturer/brand suggestions would be welcomed.” Answer from Bob Gomach of B & R Cycles in Oshkosh, WI:"I’ve always used 10/30. For normal street riding it’s fine. A modern fork oil would probably work better if the bike was ridden hard as in racing conditions. I always had good results with Bel-Ray in my race bike. I would check with Pat Hanson and see what he uses in his race bike.”
“Bob"
Answer from Pat Hanson, instructor of small engine repair at M.A.T.C. and BBC President"Yes there is a difference. Modern engine oil has a lot of detergents that are designed to carry the dirt back to the oil filter, so the normal amount of crud that builds up in the fork over time ends up being carried by the oil through the shuttle valve assemblies, bushings and seals. A good fork oil will allow the crud to be deposited into the sludge trap at the bottom of the fork leg and away from the inner workings of the units. For an average rider 30 weight oil works well in the Triumphs. Don't forget to check the lower legs for fit, no side play.
Hope this helps,Pat"
