PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Why Extended Learning Programs Are Important:
Program Overview:
The mission of the Brighter Tomorrow Extended Learning Program
is to help students in grades kindergarten through eight reach their
fullest potential by strengthening their academic skills in literacy
and math, while providing a safe and supportive environment for
social and emotional development.
Programming is designed to offer support in small groups or
individualized tutoring led by licensed teachers and highly qualified,
caring adults. Students are involved in a broad range of authentic
hands-on activities that are culturally enriched and offered in tandem
with family engagement.
At no cost to parents, a daily nutritional snack and occasional field
trips are provided. Students are recommended for participation by
their building leadership teams comprising administrators, teachers,
and auxiliary staff, or by parent request.
Extended learning programming is a strategy used to aid in
reaching the district’s academic and nonacademic goals.
They offer targeted services and interventions aligned with building-level and district-level strategies. They provide the flexibility to offer a continuum of services
that extend beyond the normal school day.

ALTITUDE CAREER TECH AND
WELLNESS ACADEMY @ CRENSHAW
Highlights:
Students in grades 6-8 had the opportunity to participate in a
range of clubs. The participants of each club learned and
experienced the following:
Culinary Club learned how to read recipes and enhance their math
skills through measurements while also enjoying tasty, healthy treats.
Black History Club studied African-American history and culture.
Students learned the history of food eaten in African-American culture
and experienced these foods at LA Soul where social etiquette skills
were also taught. They traveled to Spring Hill Historical Museum in
Massillon, Ohio for an interactive slave experience that allowed them
to experience an actual place of refuge in the Underground
Railroad. Students also visited the Pro Football Hall of Fame and
heard featured author, Terry McMillan, at the Palace Theater.
Upcoming field trips include traveling to Cincinnati to visit the
Freedom Center and the Harriet Beecher Stow Center.
Puppy Tales Service Learning Club visited the Stark County
Humane Society to read to the sheltered animals and were featured
in The Canton Repository. Students and staff also visited Worley
Elementary’s after school program and presented coping and
relaxation techniques to students in grades K-5. The club also raised
funds to donate to the Stark County Humane Society.
Guitar Club taught students to play an acoustic guitar. Each student
received a guitar and learned how to read music and the basic
fundamentals of playing.
Yoga Club exposed students to basic yoga techniques once a week.

Highlights:
Students in grades 4-8 had the opportunity to participate in a
range of experiences that kept them engaged while building
authentic relationships with staff and students alike.
Family engagement was a huge success at Arts Academy.
Activities included game night, health awareness, movie night and
bringing awareness to the importance of afterschool programming
during the Lights on Afterschool event. Students were excited to
participate in fun-filled activities with caring adults which
strengthened relationships between the staff, students, and families.
Girl Scout Troops (Brownies and Journeys) serving nearly
25 students were formed. The girls tried new things, made new
friends and experienced a whole new world of opportunities.
Health & Nutrition activities were offered in collaboration with
Ohio State University Extension’s Food, Education, and Nutrition
program, Diaita Juice, YMCA, YMCA Camp Tippecanoe, and
Walk With A Doc Stark County initiative. Students, staff, and
parents had fun with weighted drumsticks while pounding away
into renewed health along with Salsa dancing in the Zumba cardio
classes. They learned basic nutrition, health benefits of
physical activities, food safety and food resource management.
EXPERIENCES/PARTNERS
CLARENDON LEADERSHIP SCHOOL
Highlights:
Students in grades 3-5 had the opportunity to participate in
culturally-rich learning experiences, while building critical
reading, writing, and presentation skills. During the morning
sessions, students participated in English Language Arts
Centers that were facilitated by Walsh University’s students
from the Cognitive and Language Development course.
The program represented the diverse student population enrolled at
Clarendon. Students were exposed to an array of academic, artistic,
and social enrichment activities over the past year. The consistency
of participation strengthened the relationships between staff and
students.
Experienced certified staff members examined student academic
data, developed intervention strategies tailored to meet individual
needs and grouped students accordingly. Through a partnership with
Walsh University, students enrolled as education majors,
provided instruction and learning activities to participants in the
morning session. Communication among school administrators,
teaching staff, parents and community partnerships proved to be
key in helping students achieve the desired goal.
Community partners provided engaging learning activities where
students could express themselves and show creativity in pottery
painting classes provided by Glazed & Amused. The Wilderness
Center brought in live animals to the classroom and allowed
students to explore using all five senses with hands-on lessons
about mammals. Several girls participated in Girl Scouts of NEO
earning badges as Brownie Scouts.

EXPERIENCES/PARTNERS
Highlights:
Students in grades 6-8 were presented with the opportunity to
participate in a myriad of activities designed to keep them
engaged while teaching valuable life skills.
If Newton Had a Skateboard Club enabled students to learn about
the laws of physics while building their own skateboard. The club
culminated in a visit to First Glance Skate Club in Akron.
Pokemon Club required students to complete 45-minute Pokemon
related academic activities (comprehension, order of operations,
plotting points on a coordinate plane, creative writing, comparing
and contrasting Pokemon characters). Students worked
independently and in small groups to help each other complete
activities and create small projects. Staff and students alike
promoted a friendly competitive environment for all who
participated. When academic activities were complete, students
moved to the computer lab to create their own Pokemon cards
or battle. 21st century collaboration skills were developed through
online competitions where students challenged each other from their
technological devices.
Computer Coding CodeCombat upon completion
students received the equivalent of two years of Computer Science
course-work. Students also learned about gaming and web-
development.

Highlights:
Students in grades K-5 received individualized tutoring by after
school staff and students from Walsh University. The university
deployed 37 students from its Methods of Teaching
Developmental Reading course to provide one-on-one tutoring.
Based on student’s iReady scores and input from after school
staff and administrators, Walsh students crafted tutoring lessons
specific to each child’s need.
After completing homework, iReady lessons, STEM projects or
engaging in enrichment activities, students played signature games
of connect four, handball, and kickball outside enjoying the weather
or in the gym. They also did Zumba with partners from the YMCA!
In collaboration with VOCI, students participated in a pop-up sing-
along. The program was designed to increase reading fluency,
comprehension and vocabulary through choral singing. Students
enjoyed this experience and showcased their skills during the
1st Annual All City Musical Experience.
The Wilderness Center offered students the Backyard Wildlife
series, which exposed them to wildlife through hands-on,
interactive activities.
The Worley and Mason after school program was fortunate to have
the same core staff for two consecutive years, creating a very strong
bond between staff and students, while also strengthening its
partnership with Walsh University.
“We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty,
some are dull, while others are bright, some have weird names, but they all
learned to live together in the same box.” - Robert Fulghum

All City Musical Experience Performed the Lion King Kids
Over 40 participants of the first annual All City Musical Experience performed the Lion King Kids musical in front of
an audience of nearly 450. Students were thrilled to be a part of this inaugural production with their peers from
Altitude Academy @ Crenshaw, College and Career Readiness Academy @ Lehman, Early College Academy @ Souers,
and STEAMM Academy @ Hartford. We are pleased to share that this performance generated nearly $1,700
in funds through entrance fees, sold goods, and donations. All proceeds will be reinvested into the
expansion of the middle school performing arts programming in the 2017-2018 school year.
