Broadmoor Hospital Project Success

The Briefing

A reflection of Gilling Dod Architects continued commitment to BIM (building information modelling) on all our major healthcare projects has resulted in an invite to speak on the matter at this year’s IHEEM event. We have been working in Autodesk Revit software for over four years and it has become a fundamental part of our quality and service delivery ethos benefiting our clients and wider team through collaborative working.

Recently we have also been invited to work alongside other market leaders on the NHS Repeatable Rooms project under the NHS Procure 21+ framework. The initiative aims to achieve procurement cost reductions across the framework by creating standard 3D models of repeatable rooms that are assemblies which can be re-used by any building information modelling software system.

The Briefing Gilling Dod Autumn 2013

New Lincolnshire CAMHS Project

Gilling Dod continues to add to its portfolio of specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS) facilities with a new commission for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Trust. The project, currently at design stage, involves the design and construction of a new £6m facility for Lincolnshire on the Trust’s existing St Georges Hospital site. The project builds on the success of the Discovery House Project which was delivered for the Trust by Gilling Dod in 2012 and won three BBH Awards.

Junction 17 Handover

Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust took possession of their new £11m CAMHS Facility in June 2013 on programme and to budget.

The new Unit will be called ‘Junction 17’ and was delivered with IHP as PSCP under NHS Procure 21. The iconic design was developed via intensive service user engagement and involved a bespoke and young person focussed interior design approach developed by GD*id. The new 30 Bed Facility will provide a client focussed and therapeutic environment for vulnerable young people with complex mental health needs. The building is to be officially opened in November by Dame Kelly Holmes and the service recently featured in a BBC documentary highlighting the complexities of this emerging service.

Burnley Urgent Care Centre taking shapeThe construction of the new £9m state of the art Urgent Care Centre at Burnley General Hospital is nearing completion.

The project is being delivered with Kier under P21+ and is being hailed as a flagship scheme utilising the BIM platform. The new building will replace the existing Urgent Care Centre on the site as well as providing Children’s Minor Illness and GP out of hours services for the locality. The prestigious project is the latest scheme to be delivered by the Practice for the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Salford Royal Hospital is raising a cup to its new café

Gilling Dod Interiors recently completed another stand out project.

Warrington & Halton Hospitals Success

Gilling Dod Architects have been appointed with Kier Construction via the NHS Procure21+ framework to deliver for the next 5 years the strategic estate plan, new service model and resulting projects at Warrington & Halton Hospitals delivering the Trusts vision of delivering high Quality, Safe Healthcare.

The estate and clinical strategy requires both major and minor capital investment and we are now working with the Trust on the delivery of strategic planning matters and developing a refined estates strategy.

New West Cumberland Hospital on site Good progress has continued to be made on the construction of the new £95m West Cumberland Hospital since the contract was signed in December 2012.

The whole site project designed in Revit (BIM) uses state of the art off site concrete panels via Laing O’Rourke DfMA systems and is due for completion by December 2014.

Recovery Academy gets go ahead

The Plans for a unique and landmark facility on the Prestwich Hospital site, Manchester have been given the green light. The Recovery Academy will be a state of the art, fully accessible, healing focussed resource centre for people with varying Mental Health needs within the Local Community. The £6m build is being delivered for Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and is currently at design stage. The building will bring together Education, Public Health Information, Therapy and conference facilities under one roof with Trust HQ and Management support spaces also included at first floor. The new building will also help redefine the public face of Mental Health Services on the site and is part of a larger site wide Development Control Plan penned by Gilling Dod Architects for the Trust. The Project is due on site in mid 2014.

The Liverpool Womens HospitalGilling Dod Interiors are highly experienced in the integration of ‘branding’ into the built environment and have been working closely with Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust to develop a full interior design guide to provide consistency of approach across all hospital departments and communal areas as well as achieving excellent way finding and an improved experience for patients, staff and public.

Building a lighthouse of hope for people with dementia

The Lighthouse project will be a beacon of hope and support for people with dementia and their families. The Black Country Partnership NHS Trust won nearly £1m of Department of Health funding to build a dementia resource hub at Edward Street Hospital. The project will revolutionise the environment in which services are provided for people in the Black Country who are living with dementia. Gilling Dod Interiors have been instrumental in developing this truly innovative design for dementia support and this project is one of the successful pilot schemes from the Department of Health.

In addition we are working with the Trust to develop their CAMHS inpatient, Learning Disabilities & Forensics and Additional Needs business cases.

New AppointmentGilling Dod are pleased to announce the promotion of Guy Brookes to Associate within the Practice. As part of our on-going development of our team, this appointment also reflects our growing workload, profile and exposure in the market place. Guy brings invaluable skills and experience to the core Management Team at the Practice including hands on Mental Health Design pedigree, technical know-how and proven BIM protocol knowledge. We wish him well in his new role and look forward to his future contributions to the Gilling Dod brand.

French Connections

As part of the Practices on-going investment in knowledge sharing and design excellence we have recently embarked on numerous information exchange projects. As part of an initiative set up by our Partners at Vinci, we were invited to visit a major Healthcare Build currently on site in Lyon, France. The “Centre Hospitallier Le Vinatier” is a 330 Bed Adult Acute Mental Health Facility costing €78.4m (£66.86m) and is being delivered by Vinci’s sister Company Lamy Construction.

The three day visit looked at design standards and approaches, construction methodology, procurement and risk profiles. The findings have been fed into the wider debate raging about construction costs in the UK compared to the Continent.

The Project comes on the back of other detailed knowledge sharing exercises the Practice has been involved with over the last twelve months. Via the DIMHN we have also looked at Projects in New York, Perth (WA) and Dublin with an eye on constantly improving our design approach and solutions.
