Where has the time gone? It’s the last week before mid-semester
break! Welcome back to those who were at Law Camp! Hopefully you
will have recovered enough to start another week.
We have a packed Brief this week, with everything you need to know
to register for Competitions and General Delegate positions for the
ALSA Clayton Utz Conference in Perth this July. Be quick to register!

Postgraduate Opportunities at Oxford
Justice Talks: The Hon Ronald Sackville Hear from former Federal Court of
Australia Judge, Justice Sackville, on
his ideas of justice as they have been
influenced by the various roles he has
held throughout his career - legal
academic, Royal Commissioner, law
reformer, practising barrister and
Judge in Australia and elsewhere.
He will consider the law as a force for
social justice, the notion of “access to
justice”, the constraints on Judges who
promise to do “justice according to
law” and Australian concepts of the
rule of law.

Court of Conscience Graphic Designer The Law Society is seeking talented,
creative and enthusiastic graphic arts
students to join the Court of
Conscience team as graphic designers
in 2013! Court of Conscience is an
annual publication run by the Law
Society that aims to give students and
academics the platform to express their
praise and concern about social justice
issues. As a law student-run initiative,
we are looking for creative counterparts
who can make the publication look
bold, sophisticated and artistic.
It is a volunteer role. Experience with
graphic design and software is
necessary and needs to be balanced
with enthusiasm and commitment to
make this publication fantastic!

Committee Forum
Australian Lawyers for Human Rights Dinner
The ALHR invites UNSW Law students
to their Annual Dinner for 2013. The
special guest will be Dan Mori, a retired
Lieutenant Colonel in the United States
Marine Corps who volunteered to
represent Guantanamo Bay detainees
and was appointed military defence
lawyer for David Hicks in 2003.

Odyssey Program Volunteer
The Odyssey program is a fantastic,
once in a lifetime opportunity to spend
time in a remote indigenous community,
working with local people whilst
learning the realities of community life
in some of Australia’s most spectacular
regions.
Volunteers work in small teams to
facilitate the June/July school holiday
activities, primarily sport and
recreation-based, targeted at children
and young people.
Volunteers play a vital role in
discouraging anti-social and at-risk
behaviour through providing
engaging and healthy choices (think
disco, waterslides, painting!)
Open-minded and enthusiastic
volunteers who want to learn, grow
and discover more about themselves
and the country they live in should
apply online here.

Aurora Native Title Internship Program
The Aurora Native Title Internship
Program places law, anthropology and
other social science students and
graduates from Australian universities
at Native Title Representative Bodies
and other organisations involved in
policy development, social justice and
human rights with an Indigenous
focus.

ALSA Clayton Utz Conference (Perth) The 2013 ALSA Clayton Utz Conference
will be hosted between July 9-16.
Registrations are now open for six
different Competitions and General
Delegate position. It is a fantastic
opportunity to apply your theoretical
understanding of the law in exciting,
practical and competitive contexts.
UNSW Law Society will subsidise
registration, transport and
accommodation for all competitors.
Competitions application close 31 March
Students who have completed a course
on IHL and/or participated in internal
and external competitions are
encouraged to apply for this moot.
A team of two competitors will be
selected. Competitors must be available
to prepare during the mid-year break.
King & Wood Mallesons Championship Moot
Mooters from across Australia, NZ, and
South-East Asia are pitted against each
other in highly charged legal argument.
Finalists from all internal mooting
competitions and competitors in
previous external competitions are
encouraged to apply for this
prestigious national moot. A team
of three competitors will be selected to
compete. Competitors must be
available to prepare during the
mid-year break.
Australian Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot
College of Law Witness Examination Competition
Past competitors of the internal Trial
Advocacy competition and previous
external competitions are encouraged to
apply for this national competition.
One competitor will be selected to
compete at ALSA.
Sir Laurence Street Negotiation Competition
Past competitors of internal Negotiation
competitions and previous external
competitions are encouraged to apply
for the premier national dispute
resolution competition.
Two competitors will be selected to
compete. Applicants will apply a
individuals but can choose to nominate
a preferred partner.
Clayton Utz Paper Presentation
Paper Presentation involves researching
and writing a legal essay (between 3000
-5000 words) and then presenting it to
a panel of judges. Competitors compete
individually and the papers may be
written on any legal topic. The panel
may ask questions as they see fit during
and after the presentation to assess the
depth of knowledge and understanding
the competitor has in the chosen field.
The winner of the National Paper
Presentation Final will have their paper
published in ALSA’s Academic Journal.
All students are encouraged to ap-
ply. Along with their application form,
applicants must submit a paper that is
representative of their ability. One
competitor will be selected to compete.
Norton Rose Client Interviewing Competition
Past competitors of the internal Client
Interviewing competition and previous
external competitions are encouraged to
apply for this national competition.
Two competitors will be selected to
compete. Applicants will apply as
individuals but can choose to nominate
a preferred partner.

Negotiation Partners - tasked with
assisting the competitors of the ALSA
Negotiation Competition in their
training. Duties include participating as
the opposing team in practice
negotiations with the competitors in
the lead up to ALSA and debriefing
with the competitors after each training
round. Two students will be selected
for this role. The role does not require
the student to attend ALSA and will not
receive any subsides from the UNSW
Law Society .
ALSA Clayton Utz Conference (Perth)
If competitions aren’t really your thing,
but you don't want to miss out on all
the fun of the Conference, why not
register to attend as a General
Delegate?
General Delegates will have access to
all Conference events, such as the
careers program (including networking
drinks and legal skills workshops),
education and social justice program
(including legal education forums,
Community Day) and all the night
social events! Delegates are also free
to explore the beautiful city of Perth
during the day.
Gold registration costs $850 (includes
accommodation) and silver registration
costs $500 (does not include
accommodation). Neither registration
fee includes flights or optional extras
that you can purchase (such as the pub
crawl and day trip). Please note, the
UNSW Law Society will not be providing
any subsidies for General Delegates this
year.
ALSA Conference Ancillary Positions Advocate Aide-de-Camp – tasked
with assisting the competitor of the
ALSA Witness Examination Competition
in their training. Duties include
participating as a witness/opposing
council in practice trials with the
competitor in the lead up to ALSA and
debriefing with the competitor after
each training round. Up to two students
may be selected for this role. The role
does not require the student to attend
ALSA and will not receive any subsides
from the UNSW Law Society.
Please note that if you apply to be a
competitor in either Witness
Examination or Negotiations for ALSA
and are unsuccessful, you will
automatically be considered for these
roles and need not apply further.

ALSA National Essay Competition
The ALSA National Essay Competition is
now open. Essays can be on any legal
topic (3000-12000 words). Submission
requirements and marking criteria can
be found on the ALSA website.

FDI International Arbitration Moot The FDI International Arbitration Moot is
an annual international arbitration moot
focused on the growing area of
international investment law. The FDI
Moot is a great opportunity, not only to
develop your advocacy skills, but also to
network with investment and arbitration
law experts from around the world as
well as to get a taste of this interesting
area of law.
The Asia-Pacific Rounds will take place
in Seoul, Korea at the Korean
Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB)
from August 22-24. The global finals
will be held in October in Frankfurt,
Germany.
For the Asia-Pacific Rounds, teams only
need to submit skeleton briefs (written
submissions under 1500 words). Teams
that progress to the finals will need to
prepare full memorials.

The intermediate mooting registrations
for 2013 are open. Register here.

The senior mooting competition is the
third and final mooting competition run
by the UNSW Law Society. Fact
scenarios can be from any core subject
in a UNSW undergraduate law degree
or JD. This competition is the firmest
test of legal problem solving, research
and advocacy within the UNSW Law
Society.

The first round will be held in Week 8
and Week 9 of Semester 1 (29 April to
10 May 2013). Moots will be held at
6pm, and you can select either the
Kensington campus or the CBD campus
as your preferred moot venue.

Connecting with Law Short Film To enter the Connecting with Law Short
Film Competition, students are asked to
create a 2-5 minute film around their
top tips for studying law to educate,
entertain and engage other law
students.
The winners will be those judged to be
the most creative, instructive and
original - anything that helps other
students to connect with the study of
law.
The winners will receive:
1st prize $1500
2nd prize $500
3rd prize $250
