The August STaCs was held from August 17th to the 23rd. Bob Flynn and Lee Ann Daly scored 65.90% on Wednesday, August 19 earning 10.62. silver masterpoints. Bob and Lee Ann also scored 67.56% on Saturday, August 22 earning 12.5 silver masterpoints. Congratulations to them and to all our members who were awarded silver points that week. Georgia Pierpont celebrated her 97th Birthday on Sunday, August 30 at the VBBC. Members played No Zeros Jackpot Open Pairs and dined on a spectacular birthday cake and other delicacies. The “No Zeros Jackpot” was won by Bronia Jenkins and Candace Griffey with several other close contenders. A special thanks to Lyn Giuffrida, MJ Malloy and Margaret Mary Zoltak for providing this special celebration for the very popular Georgia! In September we are running three Series Events, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The Series Events award bonus masterpoints at month end. Those players earning the highest number of points during the series are eligible to earn bonus points based on the number of tables in play for all games in which he or she played and the total masterpoints that player earned. There is no minimum on how many games a player must play and the player may play with two or more different partners during any Series. We are grateful to the many kitchen helpers
including Lelia Barnes, Nicki and John Brunner,
Marge Desmery, Pat Forsdick, Candace Griffey,
Raleighine Hoppe, Jean Knoesen, Kaytee
Losche, Bobbi Maffei, Rob Middleman, Norma
Oringel, Gail Partenheimer, Jan Ward and Helen
White. Please join these great volunteers and sign
up to help in the kitchen. Your help is needed and
appreciated. See you at the Club! Martha

16% turnout in Montana for VBBC! September 2015
There we were after a week of driving through the glorious west at Flathead Lake Lodge, a dude ranch in Big Fork, Montana. We already knew it was terrific because we were there three years ago. The purpose was to PLAY BRIDGE and try to learn some new tricks from one of our favorites, Jerry Helms who lectured here at VBBC last winter. We were surprised and delighted to discover that 10 of the 62 participants (16%) all played at our very own Vero Beach Bridge Club! Even more surprising, most of us didn’t know each other. We asked Fred Theurkauf, the tour director from Finesse West Tours, to take our picture. Unfortunately, his photo did not come out well, but a fellow player also snapped an informal photo or two to send to a friend who lives in our community. The participants from VBBC were Ann and Dick Bottelli, Walt Brewer, Denis Conlon and Linda Lemmon, Claudia Haller, and Nancy and Bob Paul, and Susie and Lee Woody. Now isn’t that a small world? PS We had a ball, and several came home with HUGE prizes (as Fred would say) which were decks of cards with the Finesse West logo on them. The stars were Linda Lemmon and Denis Conlon who were on the winning team in Section C of the Swiss Teams event.

BE COURTEOUS The player on lead should always make their facedown lead prior to operating the BridgeMate or noting the contract on their score card. This courtesy keeps the game moving and allows your partner more time to “make a plan” before playing to the first trick.
HELP SOLVE THIS MYSTERY Decades ago Gail Partenheimer gave her mother a book on Alaska written by Kay Thomas. The book was inscribed to Gail’s Mother and was signed by the author. Twenty-four years ago Gail’s Mother passed away and the book was either given to the Salvation Army or to benefit some other worthy cause in Wisconsin. Last week that very same inscribed book turned up in the VBBC Library. Gail picked it up before a game and was stunned to see the inscription to her long since departed Mother. Who brought this book in?! Help Gail fill in some of the last 24 years!
