As The Chamber is fresh into a new fiscal year, weve had the opportunity to reflect on our beginnings, re-evaluate priorities and plan for the future. Over the past year, weve been proud to debut three brand-new programs, all of which have been welcomed with open arms by the community.

Eggs & Issues is a monthly event series to bring timely topics to the forefront of discussion in the region; Women Connect

meets monthly to hear inspiring words from other women in business and provides valuable networking opportunities; and the Young Entrepreneurs Academy aims to connect area youth with successful businesses and learn how to launch and run a real businesses.

But one event series is now into its sixth year and I couldnt be more proud of its impact in the region. When I first came to The Chamber over five years ago, I saw how vibrant this thriving community was, but it lacked opportunities for residents to be exposed to well-known, national speakers. And so, Voices of Vision was born.

Voices of Vision is an annual event with a purpose to bring nationally recognized, world-renowned visionaries to the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo area. Our goal is that bringing in these well-known speakers gives the community the opportunity to hear and see a variety of public figures, but also gives visibility to our region and showcases our metro area.

This years speaker, Rudy Giuliani, is a perfect example of the type of leader we want to bring in. Not only is he well known around the country, but his message is timely and relevant for all to hear. This years event falls a couple months after 9/11, and his talk on leadership and crisis management, can be applied in many ways. His talk is aimed to highlight the business and life lessons hes learned through his experiences.

Voices of Vision has been a huge success and only grows year after year. Initial response was fantastic to this speaker announcement, and we fully expect another packed room and many takeaways for all. We look forward to seeing you there!

North Dakota Showcased as a Tech HubOn August 26, The Chamber and Senator John Hoeven put on our fifth annual State of Technology at the Avalon Events Center West

to offer the business community an up-close opportunity to learn about the latest technology revolutionizing commerce right here in our own state.

After a welcome from event emcee Gary Inman of Bell State Bank & Trust and Craig Whitney, President and CEO of The Chamber, Senator Hoeven took to the stage to give an overview of what innovations are coming out of North Dakota. As far as Im concerned, North Dakota is the state of technology, he said, perfectly kicking off the rest of the morning.

We heard about the exciting initiatives Appareo Systems is working on to revolutionize air traffic control in the U.S., and Botlink shared an overview of the amazing capability drones hold.

Miguel Danielson and NDSU President Dean Bresciani discussed the innovations and research coming out of NDSU and the sustainable and profitable transfer of that technology in regard to intellectual property.

Greg Tehven won the North Dakota IT Champion award during the ITCND ceremony, and multiple presenters credited 1 Million Cups as the avenue in which theyve made invaluable connections for their businesses and connecting entrepreneurs.

Jake Clark from Fargo 3D Printing took the stage next, alongside an actual 3-D printer called 3Dom, which was busy printing during his presentation. Clark talked about what is next for 3Dom, including a focus on biosustainability and a new material launching soon, which will be the first to market for this particular product. He also shared that Fargo 3D Printing is one of only six filament manufacturers in the U.S., and that theyre working to get Fargo as a hub for 3-D printing.

Next up: Chad Ulven and Corey Kratcha from c2renew, a start-up company that manufactures biocomposite materials. The simple answer to what they do could best be described by Kratchas closing line about what they look forward to doing: innovating and transforming new materials and putting it into a new application and coming up with new products.

Cooper Bierscheid then came up to tell us about Protosthetics and the story of a 3-year-old boy named Jameson Davis, born missing both lower arms, whose life was transformed because of the innovation of 3-D printed prosthetics. Because of Jameson and kids like him, Protosthetics developed a PAL, or printed artificial limb, which is produced much more affordably, faster and easier for families needing prostethics. During the Q&A with presenters, Inman fielded questions to our speakers from the audience. Botlink spoke to failsafes if communication is lost with drones, as well as measures theyve implemented in their devices to prevent hackers from compromising the drones.

One thing all our presenters and audience seemed to agree on is that the collaboration, support and communication in this community is second to none. Were too small not to collaborate, Ulven said. We have to collaborate if we want North Dakota to be recognized for our technology. If we want to be global, we have to work together.

This November, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani brings his expertise and insights to the metro at our sixth annual Voices of Vision. His presentation, titled Principled Leadership: In the Face of Change and Crisis will focus on lessons learned as he revitalized New York City and pulled through the crisis of 9/11. He will share how effective leadership can result in profitability and how to use these principles in your own life to inspire excellence from the team around you.

We are extremely excited about bringing a national leader such as Rudy Giuliani to our community to share his accomplishments and insights from leading our largest city in the United States during one of the nations largest crises, Chamber President and CEO Craig Whitney said.

While Giuliani is most known for his service as mayor of New York City, he previously served in the United States Attorneys office, then as Associate Attorney General, and in 1993, was elected mayor. In these years, he focused on reducing crime, reforming welfare and improving the quality of life.

On September 11 when the Twin Towers fell, Giuliani immediately lead the recovery of the city and was even celebrated as Mayor of the World. He was named Person of the Year by TIME magazine, knighted by the Queen of England, dubbed Rudy the Rock

Technology is changing more than how we work; it is changing the look of offices.

Gone are the days of hierarchical brainstorming sessions where the power sits behind a desk. A new generation of workers who grew up working on group projects in coffee houses and researching on their laptops no longer feels productive sitting all day in a cubicle. People want to tear down the walls to create a flat management structure that encourages interaction, collaboration and brain-storming.

Many offices are creating a mix of rooms that includes:Pathways that create chance meetings to encourage conversation.Smaller conference rooms and nooks where employees can continue conversations that

lead to creative problem-solving.Quiet rooms for concentration, skyped meetings and private calls.Collaborative areas that may be configured like lounges and include

presentation abilities.Bench-style workstations.Common areas for lunch and breaks.

Proponents of activity-based working (ABW) design claim that this new floor plan not only improves teamwork, but creates a greater enjoyment of the workplace. Employees are less sedentary throughout the day and enjoy greater freedom in where and how to work. This, in turn, improves productivity and job satisfaction.

In addition to the layout, the office furniture is also changing in these spaces. Couches, chairs, end tables and art all help create an atmosphere that exudes professional warmth. Its been shown that good design positively affects client confidence, consumer purchasing, and customer satisfaction.

It is impossible to escape the global news surrounding immigration and the refugee crisis. The Fargo Moorhead area is no different. While our region has been welcoming new Americans since our citys inception, the international focus

has heightened awareness and the discussion about the impact refugees and immigrants have on our area.

Lutheran Social Services (LSS) is the local resettlement agency working in North Dakota to help settle refugees that have been approved to move to the United States by the U.S. government. This relationship between LSS and the federal agencies that coordinate refugee resettlement work in our country has been active for more than 70 years. LSS experience over the last several decades would suggest that no other organization understands better what it takes to welcome new Americans into our community.

Jessica Thomasson, CEO of LSS, will share the process refugees undertake to make it to the Fargo Moorhead area, what happens when they arrive and how they ultimately make an impact on our area. Thomasson will also address whether immigrants have had a beneficial effect on our communities and why there has been such a backlash.

LSS is leading the charge to raise awareness about, while lessening the fear toward, continuing to welcome people who are resettling into the area. This is a timely topic that is of interest to our region, our nation and the world. The presentation will allow for time to accept questions from the audience.

On September 1, we held our monthly Eggs & Issues event, this time focusing on rail safety. Amy McBeth, director of public affairs and Dale Trepanier, superintendent for Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway, were the presenters. McBeth outlined all of the safety and infrastructure investments that BNSF has made just in our region. It was interesting to note that 2014 was the safest year in history for railways and they continue to be the safest mode of land transportation of goods. Along with investments in rail infrastructure, BNSF has made significant investments to safety in the communities they impact. Over 2,000 first responders from Minnesota and North Dakota have been trained by BNSF professionals on responding to locomotive situations.

A Proactive Approach to Workplace Violence Identify & Respond to Aggressive Behavior

Rock Your Routine - Taking Control of the Daily Grind

Youve seen the headlines and heard the stories. Unfortunately, tragedies are occurring every day, some right here in our own backyard. Often, the best approach to preventing tragedy is preparedness. Since 90% of solving a problem is preventing

it in the first place, being proactive in potentially dangerous situations is of utmost importance. In this session, Joel Vettel, a lieutenant with the Fargo Police Department, will give attendees tangible tips to be safe in any situation and be able to spot warning signs that something might be wrong before things take a turn for the worse.

Learn the little things you can do every day to empower people to keep themselves and others safe. Vettel will instruct how to address aggressive

behavior, spot red flags and learn techniques to de-escalate volatile situations. While the presentation focuses on workplace situations, these lessons can be applied in any setting.

Vettel received a bachelor of science degree from NDSU and a masters degree from the University of Mary. He is a 2009 graduate of Northwestern Universitys Center for Public Safety and a 2013 Graduate of the FBI National Academy. Vettel lectures extensively on the issue of personal safety, workplace violence and dealing with aggressive people.

Military Affairs

We are pleased to announce and introduce you to a new face joining our efforts with the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) program! Josh Teigen has joined as program instructor for this years YEA! class.

Teigen is currently president and CEO of his own business, Crossfox Innovation, a business development and innovation consulting company in Fargo.

A young entrepreneur himself, Teigen saved all his earnings from working as a diesel mechanic at age 14 and began investing in the stock market. Once word caught on what he was up to, he started an email newsletter to share his investment advice, which quickly grew to 500 people.

One of those people who was on Teigens email list was local businessman Doug Burgum, who was so impressed with Teigens savvy, he invited him to work with him, which Teigen did for two years in high school. He then went on to UND for their entrepreneurship program, which led him to heading up to the Pittsburgh area startup for a while.

His involvement with YEA! is a natural fit. In college, he witnessed lots of options for students in certain specific fields (like medicine) to network and advance their future careers, but there were far fewer opportunities for those interested in business or entrepreneurship. Its important to him to give back by helping offer these opportunities to young business people.

As for what he hopes to achieve with YEA!, he wants to showcase the flagship companies that we have in our own community so local kids dont think they have to go to elsewhere to work in business. He also hopes to provide valuable opportunities for these kids to connect with local businesses and develop meaningful relationships, which will help them figure out where their passion is. The ultimate goal is to help the YEA! students develop fully-functioning businesses of their own that will have a positive economic and social impact on the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo community.

Teigen wants to make sure our areas great non-profits are involved with the program as well.

This years YEA! classes have just started this past September.

True Leaders Don t Create Followers; They Mentor and Create

More LeadersFew things can benefit a

business more than building strong leaders. Vogel Law Firm is a prime example of this, as they have an unprecedented number of women partners compared to other law firms in the state. One key reason for that is a strong mentoring program.

Tami Norgard, a managing partner, mentored Jade Rosenfeldt, a partner at the firm. Now, they can speak first-hand about the key attributes of a successful mentor/mentee relationship. Rosenfeldt knows how much can be gained early in a career by having someone

assist in building the myth of competence, and Norgard can illustrate how her mentorship fostered improved

policies and opportunities at their firm. Norgard and Rosenfeldt will be discussing with the

Women Connect audience the different types of mentors every new hire should have, from a first-year-of-employment mentor, to a transitional mentor to help climb the ladder or a more permanent long-term mentor. Theyll also share how navigating the ladder to success in business can be made easier by intentionally fostering the right mentoring relationship(s), as well as the benefits gained by managers while prompting mentees to reach that next rung.

Learn how to empower new hires to seek out different types of mentoring relationships. Youll find out the advantages that business owners and managers can gain from fostering great mentoring programs that will help grow the business and the future business leaders!

Our ability to positively impact and lead those around us is much more than a position or title may lead us to believe. We all have the opportunity to exercise leadership each and every day whether we sit at the front desk, in the corner office or in a cubicle next to the water cooler. This session will

explore three factors that, when implemented, will allow you to increase your leadership capacity and begin to make a greater difference in your organization immediately, no matter your position. Jess Almlie, learning and development trainer at Discovery Benefits, Inc. will help attendees to assess their current skills and create a personalized action item for immediate implementation upon return to the workplace.

Almlie adapted this session from Patrick Lencionis work on healthy organizations and teams. The presentation can be used to improve individual leadership capacity, the accountability and fulfillment

of those you manage, and as a guide in planning any program where people are involved.

Almlie is a collaborative leader who thrives on creating clarity, building strong teams and developing leaders through training and mentorship. A skilled and engaging facilitator, she developed a comprehensive student leadership program at Concordia College, worked with volunteer leaders at Prairie Heights, and is currently a Learning & Development Trainer at Discovery Benefits, Inc. She is a facilitator for the 35 Under 35 Womens Leadership Program and Event Lead for Leadercast Fargo-Moorhead.

Choice Financial also places importance on staying on top of current technology for both its staff and customers. NNHQCC is an all teach, all learn initiative led by the Great Plains Quality Initiative and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The intent is to spread the practices of high-performing nursing homes with the aim of ensuring that every nursing home resident receives the highest quality of care. The score achieved by Bethany on 42nd Skilled Nursing placed the facility among the top 10% of facilities nationwide.

On September 1, representatives from the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization begun in memory of a fallen 9/11 firefighter, paid a special visit to Marcus Roman of Floor To Ceiling Carpet One, Fargo, to personally thank him for their generous support of the Foundations Building for Americas Bravest (BFAB) program. The BFAB program builds high-tech smart homes for service members returning from war who have been catastrophically injured. Carpet One Floor & Home, and its manufacturing partner Mohawk, have committed to providing flooring materials and installation for 46 of these smart homes. Each stores customers are invited to share information about the program with others, and make a personal contribution at the store site. The goal is to enable the building of at least two more smart homes.

Austin Roberts Swegarden

ShareHouse, Inc., Fargo, has named Jim Austin, Jon Swegarden and Pastor John Roberts to its Board of Directors. Austin received his major in broadcast journalism from University of North

Dakota, Grand Forks. He worked at KXJB in the mid-60s. He was on the staff of U.S Congressman in Washington, D.C., Staff of U.S. Senator, and Washington Lobbyist for a number of companies before returning to North Dakota and working in the insurance industry. Swegarden graduated from NDSU and Mount Marty College, Yankton, South Dakota, with a bachelor of science in respiratory therapy. He currently is president of 12th Avenue Business Park Condo Association, managing partner of Sweboe Storage Systems, and vice president of Polyair, LLC, Fargo. Roberts is an ordained United Methodist pastor who has served a variety of congregations since 1980 in Minnesota, West Virginia and North Dakota. He spent three years as the Shelter Operations Director at Churches United for the Homeless in Moorhead. Currently, he is pastor at Recovery Worship. Flaa is a 2005 graduate of Fargo South High School and attended North Dakota State College of Science and M-State in Moorhead. He is enrolled in the Registered Nurse training program at Rasmussen College in Moorhead. He is a nurse in the Transitional Care Unit at Bethany on 42nd. Through the scholarship in Kim Marchells name, Bethany Retirement Living provides financial support to qualified Bethany employees who are continuing their education in a nursing-related educational program.

Arntson Brunsvold

Bremer has announced the addition of two new Bremer Investment Services and Raymond James financial advisors in Fargo-Moorhead: Stephen Arntson and Brady Brunsvold. Arntson has worked in financial services for 16 years, most recently as director of the securities division at a Fargo insurance organization. He has a masters degree in business administration

from the University of Mary in Bismarck, where he also received his undergraduate degree. Brunsvold has an MBA from the University of Mary and an undergraduate degree from North Dakota State University. He was most recently a financial advisor at Edward Jones. Katelyn Henagin has also been promoted to banquet sales

manager of the Courtyard by Marriott Fargo-Moorhead, where she will oversee weddings. Henagin is a graduate of Concordia College with a degree in philosophy, and has worked a variety of leadership roles at the Courtyard.

Kraft Setzer

Jordan Kraft has joined Dawson Insurance, Fargo, as a group implementation specialist, and Melissa Setzer joined the agency as a commercial lines account assistant. Kraft previously worked as a COBRA implementation specialist at Discovery Benefits, a leasing agent at Hegenes Property Management and as a support specialist at Scheels All Sports, all in Fargo.

He graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in economics. Setzer previously worked as a paralegal and legal secretary for two Fargo law firms as well as a legal document processor at Integreon Managed Solutions, also in Fargo.

The Fargo Police Department, in conjunction with Lake Region State College, announced the graduation and commencement ceremony of Peace Officer Training Class #76. Five members of the graduating class have been given conditional job offers with the Fargo Police Department and were officially sworn in as police officers on August 31, 2015.

Roberts Vigesaa Muhonen

Elim Rehab & Care Center announced the hiring of two nurses who will be sharing a unit manager role, Amanda Roberts, RN, BSN and Lori Vigesaa, RN. They also announced that Renee Muhonen has been named the new

campus administrator for Elim Care Fargo. Roberts began her career at Elim as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), then got her registered nurse and bachelors degree in nursing. She is currently enrolled in masters studies for an adult and gerontology nurse practitioner program. Vigesaa graduated with an associate degree from Minnesota State Community and Technical College in 2008 and began working as a nurse in long-term care with another Fargo facility. Most recently, Muhonen has been Elims quality assurance director for the North Dakota region. A certified gerontological nurse, Muhonen also has her masters in nursing administration as well as her administrators licensure. Prior to joining Elim, Muhonen had been the director of nursing at another facility, and had also been the director of Medical Surgical Services at Innovis Health. Earlier in her career she had served as the director of nursing at Elim Care in Fargo.

Stacy Smith has been promoted to executive manager to the chairman, president and CEO and assistant corporate secretary at Gate City Bank. Smith has been employed at Gate City Bank since 2009 and was most recently the administrative assistant. A native of Fargo, Smith graduated from Fargo North High School before attending University of North Dakota where she earned her bachelors degree in management.

The Great Plains Food Bank has hired Andrea Block as SNAP outreach coordinator, Jenae Meske as program coordinator and promoted Cathy Herbold to director of programs and agency services. North Dakota State College of Science Dean of Technologies and Services Barbara Bang has been named president of the National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE). In this capacity, Bang will also serve as a representative for the Commission on Economic and Workforce Development for the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Her one-year term as NCWE president began on July 1, 2015. The NCWE, an affiliate council of the AACC, provides a national forum for administrators and faculty in workforce education and basic skills, as well as representatives of

business, labor, military and government, to affect and direct the future role of two-year and other post-secondary institutions in workforce education and economic development.

Peter Johnson, executive mortgage officer at Town & Country Credit Union, has been designated by Minnesota Housing as a Platinum Top Producing Loan Officer for production January 1, 2015 to June 30, 2015. Minnesota Housing provides a select number of loan officers recognition due to the exemplary work achieved offering Minnesota Housing programs. The Top Producing Loan Officer program currently has three levels of achievement based on percentages of regional loan production: Platinum, Gold and Silver.

Leinen Guck O'Meara
