Bewdley Tennis Club:another Bewdley success story

In an era when Andy Murray is flying the flag for British tennis, BewdleyTennis Club isserving up its own fair share of winners by helping putthe sport on the map inWorcestershire.

Eight of its 15 teams gained promotion in local leagueslast season - a reflection not just on the talent across arange of ages and abilities at the club but also on its fa-cilities, which are rated among the best in thecounty. More important than team success, however, isthe opportunity the club provides to townsfolk of allages and abilities to play this wonderful sport, offeringfun and exercise in an enjoyable and friendlyenvironment.

Voted Hereford andWorcester Club of theYear in 2012,BewdleyTennis Club will chalk up its 90th anniversary next year with a thrivingmembership exceeding 300. Perhaps most encouragingly, its junior section is one of itscrowning achievements with children as young as five getting their first taste of the sport.

Head Coach Geoff Barrie has been instrumental in driving forward coaching at the club andheads up instruction with an emphasis on accessibility and inclusion, hence sessions rangingfrom 'term time tennis for women' aimed at newcomers to the game plus new initiativessuch as 'dads and lads' sessions and 'tots tennis' for four to eight year olds.

“The most important thing about any club or sport is making people welcome, regardless ofage or ability, and Bewdley prides itself on that”, said Barrie. “It has a good mix of membersand abilities, so it is easy to fit in and also a great way to meet new friends and also stayhealthy.”

A new member who enjoyed a women’s coaching session recently: “The club made me feelvery welcome with existing members making time to play with us newcomers, which wasgreat because a few were a bit nerv-ous at first. That gave everyoneconfidence to join in.”

The club holds a number of OpenDays in the year and extends an in-vitation to anyone to come downand have a go and see what it's like.

Pleased to meet you: NATASHA CARSON-BROWN,

POSTWOMAN

I’ve lived in Bewdley for three years now, ever since Darren, my husband, spotted the “For Sale” notice on his rounds one day. (Yes, he’s a postman too!) We managed to buy thehouse and haven’t looked back since. We both love it here and love our jobs too.

Mine starts at 9.00 in the sorting office in Kidderminster. Inside that great big building nextto Sainsburys is an area divided into bays. Each bay corresponds to a postie’s Walk, sometimes called a Duty. The bay is divided up again into streets then again into each house.Yes, your house has a little slot all to itself. As we all get into work, we do the sorting; if there’s been people on early shifts it might already be done. Then we load up our bags ortrolleys and set off. The bays are arranged into a logical route for us so that our post is moreor less already in order; the walk is in the form of a loop so that we end up back at thestarting point, which is probably our car. I’m lucky; I do the Bark Hill area and end up quiteclose to home. And by the time I do get back I will have walked seven and a half miles. So no, I don’t need to watch my figure!

What do I like about the job? Time on myown; it gives me time to think. If I set offwith a problem it’s usually sorted by the endof my walk. Then there’s being outside in thefresh air. That’s lovely. So are the people; I really enjoy chatting to people I meet andthey’re all very friendly.

What don’t I like? Top of the list is dogs. You never know what they’re going to doand I’ve had several close encounters. It’s agood job I have a thick jacket and stoutboots. I need them! Then there’s horribleletterboxes with loose bits of wire or strongsprings that snap on my fingers. And letterboxes at the bottom of the door sothat I have to take off my sack and grovelaround by my ankles. Weather doesn’tbother me – those sensible clothes again –but I really hate slippery snow or ice. And Ido sometimes feel pretty tired by the end ofthe week.

But I wouldn’t change my job for anything.

Urban Tree SurveyHow would you like to help put Bewdley on the Map? It's there already, you say? Not on the Urban Tree Survey Map it isn't – not at the time ofwriting.

The Natural History Museum is running an Urban Tree Survey which aimsat discovering which tree species are growing in the UK. As most urbantrees are in private gardens the best way to find out this information is byasking the residents – you and me. Please help. Only if we know what is growing in ourtowns can we take effective action to protect our urban trees and our urban environment.

How do you do the survey? Well, it isn't difficult if you have a computer or access to one.Go to the Natural History Museum website and put 'Urban Tree Survey' in the search box.Or do what I did and ask Google to find the right page by entering 'Urban Tree Survey' in itssearch box.

Once you are there, you can get all the information on how to complete the survey withhelp where needed for tree identification.

Give it a try and let us see if we can get Bewdley on the Tree Map.

School pupils can also take part with learning resources aimed at Key Stage 2 (ages 7 – 11).Tell your teacher!

This is a good time to do the survey as trees are coming into leaf and identification is easier.

If you need any help in identifying trees ask Chris Wilmot or Gren Jones your Tree Wardensvia the Town Clerk. His email address is [email protected]

News from Bewdley LibraryJust a few lines to tell you how our Artsand Crafts community is thriving. The result of our successful courses lastyear, our resident group, Crafty Ladies, isgoing strong. These ladies meet fortnightlyin the library to work on and support eachother in their chosen craft activities. Ourcourse provision has diversified into jewellery recently and two groups have justfinished a wirework course, which theythoroughly enjoyed. At time of writing, weare hoping to run a dressmaking/sewingcourse shortly, so keep an eye out to seewhat’s going on next time you pop in.Of course we also have numerous booksrelating to various crafts on our shelvesand these have always been very popular inBewdley; no sooner does a new knitting orsewing book come in stock that it’s takenout by some eager crafter. So don’t just sit there watching it on thetelly – get a book out and give it a go!Kay Sanderson

Meeting Bewdley’s young entrepreneurs:

Peter Styles, 21, set up his apple juicing business when hewas 19. He can often be seen at Bewdley’s produce market.

Why set up a juicing business? I didn’t get the grades Ineeded for university first time round, so found myself with an unplanned gap year. I wanted the time to be useful and I’d always liked the idea of making something to sell.

A cider maker friend got me wondering how easy small scaleproduction would be - just as a hobby during the autumn. He, along with my Dad, and the Wyre Community Land Trusthelped me get the project going.

What are the best bits? Tasting a new juice straight from the press is great! Also thelook on people’s faces when they try it. ''Hey, it tastes just like an apple'' is definitely themost common response. It's true, it's apple without the crunch.

I've also really enjoyed having a greater involvement with the local community, like the produce market and, of course, it was good when our juice was taken by the Secretary ofState at DEFRA to be served at a Cabinet Meeting in Downing Street. Managing a projectand people has made me choose a different course at university.

Challenges? Keeping up with the pace of the initial development was tough. It started asan idea, and developed within days to a business venture with a few helping hands. I had toteach myself everything before explaining to anyone helping how it's done, so we could moveon as quickly as possible.

Surprises along the way? You can get pink apple juice! Who knew that?

What advice would you give to other budding entrepreneurs? Anyone young withan idea should talk to as many people as they can and make use of all that invaluable help, advice and contacts. Check around for any local grants available, and look at national fundinglike The Prince’s Trust or National Lottery funding.

I'd also say there's a lot of pressure on young people to go to university, but academia isn't for everyone. If you've got an idea or you need experience before you try somethingyourself, then go for it. If it's not successful, you've had time and experience to decide whatyour next path is.

What next? I now share responsibilities for the juicing business with my family’s farm, as Idecided I would go to university. I may pick things back up after my degree, but I've got aplacement year with a food company, Mornflake, and then my final year of study before that.I'm still very interested in fruit drinks though, so other juices or maybe cordial could be thenext thing for Son & Styles.

The Passion PlayBewdley’s first Passion Play – the story of Jesus’ trial and crucifixion – took place on GoodFriday, 29th March. It was set in the town centre from Severnside South to the top of Load Street outside St Anne’s Church. Director Steve Conway said: “It’s been unbelievable. I’ve hademails and texts from all over the country from people who visited Bewdley to say how good theythought it was and that they were moved by the performance”.

Here are some of the huge crowd’s reactions.

“Wow – look at the crowds in Load Street!”

“We loved the music”.

“At that last bit, I found myself filling up with tears – it was somoving”

“Pity about the sound. I thought it was fantastic, though”.

“I couldn’t alwayssee what wasgoing on. I suppose that’sbecause so manypeople turnedup”

“It all went quiet at that bit where they putJesus on the cross then lifted him up. Then thehymn started and I couldn’t help crying”.

“I hope they’re going to do it again next year”.(pictures by Gary Mayner)

Discover Bewdley Spring Fair 2013:Visit an exhibition celebrating the Arley Ferry

The grand old lady of the Severn can be seen in her past glory on Sunday May 5th between10am and 4pm at 5 Dog Lane, Bewdley, her last resting place. Residents Penny and DavidGriffiths first sited the prow in their front garden in 2008 and, such was the level of interest,Penny has created an information board to give passing visitors an insight into the importance the ferry played in the lives of villagers of Arley and Bewdley. An exhibition nowincludes written memories left by local people of the Arley Ferry whether as school children, young soldiers heading off to the war or holiday makers.

Gifts to the exhibition include the ferry’s original anchor and the Pound Green sign whichpointed to her operational site plus rare photographs of the ferry given by the daughters of

Bert Evans, one of the last ferrymen. Penny says “It is reallysatisfying to think that we saved this little bit of historywith the prow and now she still “sails on” bringing smilesand happy memories to so many people”. For more information call David on 01299 404912 oremail [email protected]

St George’s Hall Appeal LaunchedAn appeal for top up funding of £150,000 was launched on St George’s Day 23rd April

by SGH Venue Management, the new company set up to run St George’s Hall when it opens in the summer.

The £800,000 raised so far has been used on improving the fabric of the building, making it sound, fully accessible, secure, warm and well lit.

Our vision is for St George's Hall to be the best community and arts centre in the area. It’s right in the heart of Bewdley for everyone to use.

Money is now needed to fit out the building withtop-quality equipment including:

• flexible theatre-style seating

• lighting and sound systems to support live performance

• projection and sound facilities for films

• digital support for streaming of live theatre and sporting events

• chairs, tables, projectors and other equipment for meeting rooms

• chairs, tables, and other items for the new café

• exhibition display panels with professional lighting

Why all this stuff?

A properly equipped St George's Hall will be able to accommodate activities such as festivals;fairs; regular drama, dance and literary performances; a community cinema; and streamed-inlive culture and sport. It will be a hub for the people of Bewdley and the many communitygroups to use for meetings and events, as well as supporting the local economy by attractingnew visitors.

What can you do?

Having just celebrated its twenty-fifth year, the ever growing success story that is BewdleyFestival is now well known in the town. Over the years, its original objective of bringing “thebest out of the town and the best to the town” has showcased many international and national artists, as well as featuring much regional and local talent.

In addition to music, comedy, drama, poetry and art, last year saw the introduction of a one-day Youth Festival and a full Book Week. And, as ever, there was OctoberFest, a wholemonth of live music, talks, crafts, food events, quizzes and exhibitions in and around the town.

What is not so well known is that Festival, is reliant on a group of dedicated volunteers andgenerous sponsors and has only one part-time paid member of staff. A registered charity, Festival does not aim to make a profit, but must nonetheless ensure that all its costs are covered and a suitable contingency fund retained to ensure its future.

Organising and staging the annual event costs around £100,000 – artists’ fees and expenses, venue hire, sound and lighting, publicity and advertising are all obvious costs, but there arealso other, not so obvious, costs such as performing rights royalties on music performances.

As well as ticket sales, a valuable source of additional revenue is the “Eat Bewdley Raffle”, a unique fundraiser that last year featured sixty-six food-related prizes generously donated bya range of local businesses.

If you are interested in the Arts and would like to getinvolved, Bewdley Festival welcomes new sponsorsand volunteers to help behind the scenes and frontof house with a wide range of tasks. Why not get involved?

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 8TH APRIL 2013

Bewdley MuseumIt was reported that visitor numbers at the Museum (operated by the District Council) remained good and indeed were higher than in the equivalent period last year. Exhibitionsare set up and ready for the Spring Opening and for which there is still a need for more volunteers.

Cycling SafetyCouncillors heard of problems involving young people cycling on the pavements in the towncentre which, as well as being dangerous, is illegal. The risk of injury especially to those pedestrians who cannot react quickly to get out of the way was highlighted. The matter hadbeen raised with the Police, who had agreed to work in conjunction with local schools to runa campaign specifically to target cyclists in relation to safety and responsibility.

Lengthsman SchemeThe Town Council has agreed once again to enter into an agreement with the County Council to take part in their Lengthsman Scheme. This provides funding for the Town’sLengthsman to carry out small tasks to improve highway safety and visibility. This includes notifying house owners to cut back vegetation, which may overhang the pavement or footway, removing vegetation, which may cover road signs, and more recently the regular moving ofthe Vehicle Activated (Speed) Sign to designated sites around the town, where speeding maybe a problem.

Bewdley Development TrustCouncillors received a summary report from the Development Trust as to their activities oflate including progress with St George’s Hall. There was a call for the Trust and the Councilto work in cooperation with one another and a meeting will be set up shortly to review current arrangements between the two bodies.

Town Centre FlowersThe Council agreed that following the completion of the paving and lighting works in LoadStreet, it should work with the District Council to look at opportunities for improved planting and landscaping. It was hoped this could be timed for the coming summer season.

May in the forestThose of you who know the forest well willknow where to look for drifts of bluebellsand lilies of the valley this month, as theyear heads towards the time of peakgrowth. Damp stream banks are covered inthe lush, garlicky-smelling leaves and whiteflowers of ramsons, and woodland edges orhedgerows shelter the garlic mustard orJack-by-the-hedge, where orange tip butterflies love to lay their single eggs. Thereare insects everywhere, and your attentionmay be attracted to groups of the beautifullonghorn moth with its bronze wings anddelicately swept back antennae dancing

among theoak leavesin sunnyglades.

Most ofthe summermigrantbirdsshouldhave ar-rived lastmonth

and by nowthey will be nesting. Spotted flycatchers arrive rather later, and like theredstart, will be frequenting the edges of theWyre’s oak woods where there is access tograzing land rich in flying insects. For bothspecies breeding success can be greatly in-creased by providing nest boxes attached totrees. Our attempts to do just that at Un-cllys Farm have certainly given a boost tobluetit and great tit populations, so we havelearnt that you need to block the nest holeuntil May to give the migrants a chance. Ihope that this year the efforts of volunteersto make, clean and check the bird boxes willbe rewarded with some little families of the rarer woodland birds.

May’s vigorous new grass growth allows usto turn out our cattle on to fresh pastures, which will be a very welcome change after avery long winter necessitating reliance onhay and haylage. Look out for frolickingDexter mums and new calves in meadowsalong the Dowles Brook and the Wyre or-chards!
