Patrick McMillian, are busy hiring, training this season’s crop of waiters and pool deck attendants focusing on upgraded services in all our dining venues and around the pools. I am very proud of all the efforts of our entire professional team as they are focusing on delivering that special member experience you can’t get anywhere else but The Briar Club.
LINDA LOVES LEADS!
Linda Benson our Membership Director is busier than she’s ever been meeting and greeting all the prospective new members you have sent her way. The number of inquiries is off the charts as all of Houston is all abuzz about our Master Plan campus rejuvenation project. Please keep sending Linda your leads as it is the life blood of the future of our Club. If you have membership questions, please stop in our office or give Linda a call for a quick reply. Complete membership information can also be found on the club’s website; once on the member side, click the Club News tab and then Membership Info. You can save the brochure to your computer and email it to all of your friends, business associates, and family members you like, who you think would be good members of our Club community.
THANK YOU FOR MEMBER FEEDBACK
Finally, I want to thank all members who take the time to give me your feedback about your club experiences, especially to those who convey experiences that may not have been to the high level the club staff is striving to achieve. I know those are sometimes harder to convey. We are a partnership, in that I and all of our management team truly want to listen, hear your concerns and take the appropriate actions that will cause all members to have memorable experiences with every visit to the Club. Please know the various ways I can be reached; First, I love the location of my new temporary office just off the family pool. I’m only foot steps away and always enjoy an impromptu visit from a member; my door is always open. Second,
every phone around the club has a speed dial that is connected to my office where you can leave a message if I’m not in. I promise to reply within 24 hours or less. Third, Casey Newman is my right hand assistant. She is located just outside my office. If she cannot solve your problem or concern she will listen, document your concern and initiate an action plan that will help you. Fourth, if I’m not in, my cell number is 713-557-4287; please feel free to use it. I will always answer it. Your unsolicited feedback is almost always the most valuable and helps me to gain a true picture of the happiness level of our membership. As I’ve said before, the only bad feedback is the feedback that I don't receive. We are poised for a very exciting year. Have fun and be safe.
At your service;
RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE
THE BRIAR CLUB • APR-JUN 2014
Spring is upon us and the Club is gearing up for what will be a fabulous time for all members, your family and friends.
It’s the busiest time of year where every department is firing on all cylinders. Gina De Pamphilis our Director of Aquatics and her team are now fully engaged in preparing our Barracudas Swim Team to blow bubbles by all their challengers in the Country Club League. I hope you’ll be able to come out to one or our home swim meets and cheer them on. Jan Vick, Director of Tennis, and her team are finishing up the Spring HLTA season and preparing for our not-to-be missed Member-Guest Tournament, scheduled for the last weekend of April. Rich Andrae, our Director of Wellness and Recreation, and his team will be finishing up his Boot Camps readying everyone for that summer look along with preparing for our summer long Funtastik Camp all your children will not want to miss. Chef Lance, along with our A la Carte Dining & Beverage Manager,

As we move into spring, so does the activity in our Membership Department; and this season is no exception. Linda Benson has been very busy keeping up with all of the referrals and friends that our members have sent her way. Let’s make this year a repeat of last year’s membership growth. Thank you again! Why not invite your friends and neighbors to join you at the Briar Club? We are sure that they’ll like what they see here!On the Food and Beverage side, Lance and his team have been hard at work continuing to listen to and address our dining needs. The Food & Beverage management team continues to refine the menu which has been well-received. I recently had dinner with my family who thoroughly enjoyed the overall dining experience. Of course, my son had one of those fantastic aged strip steaks which was cooked to perfection (a reward for great grades).
For me, this spring is especially exciting as we see the fruits of the Master Plan form around us as we continue to enjoy the advantage of having a functional club serving us, the members. I get to reflect on the past and look forward to the future for the club. As always, the Board of Directors, our General Manager, and I stand ready to do whatever we can to make the Briar Club your home away from home. Please let us know of any way that we can help. You have the President’s ear.
See you around the Club,
TIMOTHY PETERS

Club PresidentA LETTER FROM THE
DEAR FELLOW MEMBERS,
After an unusually cool winter, spring has started to make an appearance including the flurry of outdoor
activities associated with the Family Pool opening up and members taking advantage of outdoor dining. Some of the big events to look forward to this spring include the Tennis Member-Guest, Easter Brunch, and Mother’s Day Brunch, which are always sell-outs.
The Master Plan continues to move forward under the strict guidance of the Board of Directors and the Management Team. Even better is the great progress we are making on the Parking Garage. Please keep on the lookout for the 250 foot crane that will be erecting and assembling the pre-cast pieces brought to the site as our parking garage starts to take shape. It should be a grand sight.

“When you become a member of The Briar Club, you become a member of our family.” Last year we signed up more new members than we have in many years. This year we are on track to equal or exceed last year’s record. We added so many new members, not because of our brilliant marketing efforts – we don’t advertise for Club members any more than you would advertise to add to your family – but because our members introduced their family members, friends, neighbors, and business associates (their “circle”) to the Club and invited them to join The Briar Club family. Our “rejuvenation” project is beginning to stimulate more excitement about the Club. The Houston economy is booming and many new families are moving into neighborhoods within our ambit.

Summertime Pool MEMBERSHIP Q&ADo you know the answers to these frequently-asked questions?
LINDA BENSONMembership Director
FRIENDS WANT TO BEWHERE FRIENDS ARE!
While walking around the Club, I often hear how one couple joined because they know another couple here. Last year you proved this -- 87 of your friends joined the Club! What a wonderful tribute to the enthusiasm of our members. I look around at our current club and the model of the new Club and can't help but get excited for what is coming!
Another reason why I am excited is that summer is my favorite time of the year! Everyone is shaking off their winter clothes and slowly pulling out those shorts and t-shirts. The weather is warming up and I can hear the kids playing in the pool from my office desk. This time is also a great time to give prospective members a tour of the Club. They are able to see everyone's smiling faces as they are enjoying themselves in the pool and in the dining rooms.
If you have someone who is interested in learning more about the Club or would like a tour, please feel free to contact me at:
(713) 622-3667 ext [email protected]
I would be happy to go over the stages of the Club's renovations and also answer any tough questions.
Enjoy this spring and summer season, and I look forward to seeing you around the Club!
Don't forget - Linda Loves Leads!

Q: Can I bring a guest to the Family Pool?
A: Yes! You can check-in your guest with the security guard at the entrance gate. There is a guest fee of $5 per person, per day. You may bring the same guest to the Club up to 24 times in a calendar year at that $5 rate. On the 25th visit, the guest fee increases to $20.
Q: When is the Baby Pool available?
A: The Baby Pool is available when the Club is open. The toddler pool is not heated, nor is there a lifeguard on premise. Swimming in the toddler pool is at the parents' discretion.
Q: Where can I grab something to eat if I don't want to go to the Lounge or Grille?
A: The Snack Bar is available to our members during the time that the Family Pool is open. The Snack Bar features both a Kids Menu and an Adult Menu.

The high level of member of satisfaction we’ve measured in surveys and seen in comments by our members is clearly being communicated to the people they know. The good news is that we don’t yet have a waiting list. The bad news – for potential new members, though not for the Club -- is that we are sure to have one sooner rather than later. And, we can anticipate an increase in our initiation fees at any time.
There is no better time than NOW for friends, family, neighbors, and business associates to join the Briar Club family. Our fantastic Membership Director, Linda Benson, is available to assist you in this effort. Give your leads from your personal circle to Linda and she will follow-up with her gentle persistence. When your “nominees” join, they and the Club will be forever grateful. And in the short run there are rewards for nominating new members. Ask Linda about them.
For detailed membership information, login to our website (www.thebriarclub.com) and go to “membership information” under the Club News tab. You and prospective new members don’t have to login to check out the details of the Master Plan, testimonials from members, and a summary of types of memberships available -- under the Master Plan and Membership Information tabs on the home page. When in doubt, call or email Linda Benson: (713) 622-3667 or [email protected]

In many professions, a successful career is marked by an appropriate degree of professional development, verified by a credible certification program and recognized by both the public and one's peers. The Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation has been the hallmark of professionalism in club management since 1965 and is the cornerstone of CMAA's member recognition program. It is a valuable and widely-respected mark of a manager's commitment to professional development and the club industry.
In January, Casey Newman, the Club’s Director of Administration and Communication, sat for her exam, and was awarded the CCM designation.
The Briar Club takes great pride in its continuing education program for employees of all levels. Many of the Club’s Department Heads and Supervisors are certified or working toward the highest level of professional certification in their field. This has a direct influence on your experience at the Club on a regular basis. Congratulate our employees on their accomplishments:

Employees of the MONTH
Lance Warren joined The Briar Club's staff as Executive Chef nearly seven years ago. He brought with him a passion for excellence in the kitchen and a culinary creativity that continues to inspire and delight our members today. He's additionally a good teacher and mentor to his staff encouraging an outside-the-box approach to food chemistry, preparation and execution.
In 2012 Lance earned my trust and expanded his responsibilities taking on the role as Director of Food and Beverage in addition to Executive Chef. I'm proud of his recent accomplishments of assembling a first rate team around him in both our dining rooms and kitchen. As we are now focused on building a new clubhouse with larger and better amenities, Lance and his team are successfully focused on delivering quality and memorable experiences for all who grace the Club's dining venues. Please help me congratulate Lance and his team for this justly earned recognition.

Food & BeverageUPDATE
CHEF LANCE WARRENExecutive Chef / Director of F&B
My friends jokingly ask me if I ever stop working. The truth of the matter is that in the world of food and service, your mind is always working. When I am either eating, drinking or dining outside of my home, I am constantly comparing our club to the "competition".
I receive comments on occasion that our 10 oz Signature Burger is too pricey. I researched this further with price checks at Pappas Burger and Goode Company. The Pappas burger with fries and all the fixings is $16.60. The burger at Goode Company, fully loaded with fries is $16.85. Our 10 oz cheeseburger with fries, avocado, bacon, any topping of your choice and cracker basket is $13. Our buns come baked fresh from a local bakery, Krafstmen, and our burgers are quality ground chuck. I do not know where else in town one can receive this kind of quality and offerings at this price. Some items may be higher than your favorite local hang out, but I challenge you to ask yourself: Are you comparing apples to apples? Does the competition offer linen napkins, table service, true fresh red gulf snapper? Are you being offered fresh hot rolls baked twice daily?
We strive to provide the highest-quality products at the lowest price. I appreciate all feedback and want to ensure you that we have your best interest in mind. This is your home, and we take pride in having the opportunity to serve you.

Club Events WineUPDATE
PATRICK MCMILLANA la Carte Dining Manager
Summer is almost here and the Food & Beverage team has been gearing up for a busy spring and summer season. I am excited for the new Signature Cocktails menu, which includes Club-favorite drinks like the El Bandido, a jalapeño-infused Margarita served on the rocks, as well as some new cocktails like the Briarhound, with Deep Eddy Ruby Red Vodka and St. Germain liqueur.
I am also excited for some modifications to the wine list and program. My goal is to ensure that our list is full of quality wines and spirits that the membership can enjoy. With the quality must come value for the membership, and I also want to ensure that we are very competitive with the restaurants and bars in the surrounding area. I have received great feedback from the membership with regards to the offerings by the glass and bottle, as well as our monthly selections. If there is a special occasion or event which requires a specific wine that we currently do not have, I can certainly place a special order with a minimal price increase.
Along with the new training program that our management team has developed, there will be some new faces around the Club in all dining venues in the coming weeks and months. Working with surrounding high schools, Houston Community College and the Univeristy of Houston, we have had a flood of candidates looking to join our team.

Our app will serve as the mobile extension of the Club, with quick access to important information and actions on your device: view/pay your statement, view dining room menus and upcoming club events, browse Group Ex and Pilates schedules, and contact Briar Club staff with one tap.
The app will be free and availble for both Apple and Android devices. We will notify the membership once the app is available for download -- until then, stay tuned!
WEBSITE IMPROVEMENTSCasey Newman and I actively review feedback from committees meetings and member surveys, looking for ways to improve the usability and usefulness of our website. We have combed through the existing structure of our website and have planned a series of structural improvements, including:
• Easier website navigation• Dynamic Group Ex & Pilates
Calendars with more class/instructor information
• A new default landing page, to display upcoming events on log-in
We're committed to providing you with the Club information that you need, exactly when you need it. Please continue to provide your feedback about communications at the Club! We love hearing from you.

TESTIMONIAL: PILATESJennifer Ramani
My love of Pilates was something that I had not planned on. I was looking for a workout that would help improve my balance and coordination on the court. I tried a few instructors at other studios and ultimately ended up with Priscilla.
I was intrigued by her knowledge and passion for Pilates and soon realized this is exactly who I needed to instruct and educate me. Priscilla not only showed me the correct way to go through all of the exercises she also provided me with a wealth of information from nutrition to the benefits Pilates will have on my tennis game.
Since I started working with her last Spring I have seen the greatest improvement in my tennis game thus far. I have more patience, balance, confidence, and of course a toned six pack, something I have never had nor did I ever think I would have after having 2 children.
With all of this being said I truly believe that Pilates has been a wonderful addition to my tennis and workout regimen. I have really enjoyed learning and performing all the various exercises that Pilates has to offer. I look forward to further strengthening myself with Priscilla!
