The field was a little light on competitors (48 to be exact) but in no way was it light on talent. Our friends from the north proved their metal again by placing 5 players in the top 8, not a bad percentage since only 7 Canadians came to play. Mike Vidas kept Canadas win streak alive and counting. It marks the 6 th time in 3 years that a player from Canada has won this tournament. I may have to change the name to the Canadian 9-Ball Open, or put a bounty on all Canadians. Tony T-Rex ChahanTakes Hard Times By

Stormfrom: Russell Pettis

Well we really liked the article last month onJohn Horsfall. He deserves all the credit in theworld for being such a good player and a greatsportsman for the game. This tournamentdirector had to play him twice in Tacoma a fewyears back and after resting on the point for acouple of hours, Mr. Horsfall beat me so badtwice I seriously thought about quitting. Ofcourse, you know that only lasted about a week.Well this really just begins to tell my story. Wein the north part of California are beginning towonder the same thing about a 20-year-old kidfrom Sacramento. We like to call him T-Rex,but his real name is Tony Chahan. All Tony hasdone in the last two months is win the HardTimes monthly Jamboree two months in a row. That feat has never been done in the history ofHard Times. For anyone who doesnt know, themonthly jamboree is a weekend event that is aOne Pocket tournament on Saturday with a NineBall tournament on Sunday. Folks that is a hellof a feat, four tournaments in a row against realtough competition.

Braden Murphy received a special award fromHard Times Billiards and the U.S.P.P.A. for hisoutstanding play in the month of March.Braden placed second and third and raised hisaverage three points. Good Job!

personal level they are all very nice people. In agame with so many attitudes and egos its greatto see nice guys finish first.Mike Vidas, another top-notch player from thathot bed of talent known as Vancouver, B.C.rolled through the field undefeated. After anopening round win over Michelle Gamble 9-1,Mike went on to defeat Jeff Jimenez 9-4, ZakLeech 9-7, Alan Ima 9-7, Nick Kruger 9-2 andDan Louie 9-3 in the winners final to claim thedrivers seat. Dan Louie started off with anopening round win over Terry Rohrman 9-7 andwent on to defeat Loy Long 9-4, Scott Chandler9-6, Chris Iverson 9-5 and Simon Pickering 9-4. After the loss to Mike in the winners final,Dan went on to the b-side to face Chris again.Chris had opened his tournament run with a firstround bye. He then went on to defeat DavidWilliams 9-7, and Brady Golan 9-8 before hisloss to Dan Louie. Sent to the b-side he beatJason Marcoulier 9-3, Randy Camantigue 9-5,Nick Kruger 9-3, and Brady Golan 9-7 beforehis 6-9 loss to Dan Louie in the b-side finals tofinish 3rd.So our championship was set Mike Vida vs. DanLouie, U.S.A. vs. Canada, good vs. wellgood since both of these players are class Ain the sportsmanship department it sucked thatone of them had to lose.Mike broke out to an early lead 4-1. Down butin no way out Dan slowly crept back in. With afew very tough outs, and a timely 9-ball break, suddenly the match was tied at 8. Due to mymanagement responsibilities, I missed the finalsequence. Thinking that the match would go twosets I was taking care of my wait staff. Upon myreturn Mike is shooting the 7 ball and with notrouble in sight he pockets the 8 and 9 to makeit 6 in a row for Canada. Great shootinggentlemen. Again the tournament was a blast, the players were all great and I received manycompliments. Myself, Nita and my staff all workhard to put these events together so its greatto hear good things from the players. Rememberto mark your calendars for Labor Day weekend. We will be doing a 96 player 9-ball tournamentand a 32 player 8-ball tournament at the sametime. Oregon TAP at the Rally in the Valleyfrom: Jim Trenary, Evergreen Division

The Association for Pool (TAP) was well represented at the Rally in the Valley TAP tournament atthe Super Billiards Expo March 15-18 in Valley Forge, PA. Oregon had two teams, one fromSalem and one from Klamath Falls that competed in the Dream Team Event. Along with the DreamTeam event, 8 of the team members competed in the individual tournaments. While the teamscompeted well it took a hill hill match to knock them out of the tournament.Congratulations goes to Sandra Nez for her great shooting as she finished in Second Place in theall ladies tournament. I watched the championship match she played against Andrea Hess fromOhio. What an exciting match to watch. They both shot very well and very smart. There was a lot of pressure and theyboth handled it well. I cant say enough about how proud of SandraI am. She represented the state of Oregon and theKlamath Falls area with a lot of great shooting and moreimportantly, first class Sportsmanship.Sandra wasnt the only successful participate fromKlamath Falls. John Gower also did extremely well as he finished in a tie for17th place in the toughest tournament (5, 6 & 7 handicap bracket).I would also like to congratulate our brothers and sisters from the state of Washington for theirexcellent showing. In the ladies singles Cheri Partridge finished in 9th place. In the 5, 6 & 7tournament Ken Burkell finished in 17th place and Dan Wright finished in 5th. In the 2, 3 & 4tournament Ken Morano finished in 2nd Place and last but not least the Washington team Not forPoking finished in 9th place.Overall the Northwest competed very well and we had one hell of a good time. There was a lot ofgreat shooters at the Rally in the Valley and the Sportsmanship and friendships, both new and oldmade the trip even better.I cant wait for next years event as they will be expanding the size, Payouts and events for 2003.

Great Falls, Montana - April 12-14TJs Lounge second Annual 8-Ball Challenge was a huge success. Seventy-one players paid the$30 entry to show their skills in this $2000 added event. Players found conditions with Simonis860 and triangle cue balls well worth the extra $10 green fee.Players from all across the North West and Canada made the competition as exciting.Dave Martin won seven straight matches on his way to First Place. Daves road to victory was atthe expense of several players Doug Scorpack, Jack McFetridge, Tyler Edey, Clay Henrickson,Edwin Montal, & Sean Mc Kay twice. Sean Mc Kay played well with his only losses to Dave 7-4 7-5. After losing to Stan Tourangeau in the winners side TR Olson beat Stan to take third from theone loss side with Stan finishing fourth. The fifteen Ladies had their own event hosted at Classic 50s with $500 added to the purse. Someof the areas best Ladies vied for the top spots. Jane Plant went undefeated to take 1st Place.Kathy Dick took home second place with her only losses to Jane.During the finals several players were playing around with some trick shots and such. EdwinMontal came up with a stroke shot for everyone to try. A three-rail draw shot, and took a strokefrom Hell. After several attempts it was suggested players pay a quarter to try with the winnergetting the quarters. Billy Goodwin of Buffalo Bills Billiards cosponsor of the event decided tomake it even more fun and threw down a $50 bill. Daysie MayThe month of celebrating life and lives. Dancing around the Maypole(perhaps really a cue implanted after a particularly lovely shot) is anages old means of celebrating the life force of spring, the renewal of

energy after the long depths of winter.Industrialization has diminished our awareness of theflows and ebbs of life. Now, many of us do not danceat all.Appropriately, the demise of the month is ournational day of remembering those who have gonebefore us. This year will be a particularly poignantMemorial Day, filled with the breadth of the losses

we faced nationally, and the depth of the loss to thosefamily members left behind after 9-11. We all find

many different ways to remember, or carry, or promote the goals ofthose we have loved, who are now gone. Mostly, we let them live inour hearts and those quiet safe places within our spirits.Pool players, however, have a tradition I think is truly wonderful. Wehave memorial tournaments, promoting the game we all love in thename of the missed one, who also loved the game. Some are long-standing and well-attended. Some are new, sadly; some get droppedfor lack of continued sponsorship, not necessarily lack of players. Some are in the memory of great players, some for players who lovedthe game regardless of their own skills. What better way to salutethe dedication of the missing ones? As long as the tourneys run, thereis a statement that someone still cares and survives to play.It is a sad thing, to me, when good reputable memorial tournamentsare discontinued because the houses out of which they have alwaysbeen played no longer care enough about either the missing one orthe players who love to come play the namesake tournament. Iunderstand that change is the only thing that never changes somethings just change at a different speed than we might wish.I wish you the sweetness of memories, the gladness of being and thepeace of acceptance. Be safe and dont leave us yet there areenough tournaments for now

(Ill Take That Bet continued on page 18)

In October of 1966, I was enrolled as a pre-law studentmajoring in history, a freshman at the University ofMontana in Missoula. As I reflect back on my life I nowrealize my true major was billiards with a minor inphilosophy. At the time I fancied myself quite the pool shark, havingconquered my peers growing up in Kalispell, Montana. My passion for pool had peeked early in life when therelease of the movie called The Hustler convinced methat true character and nobility were enshrined in theFast Eddie persona.Id knocked off all the top players on campus and waslooking to conquer all of Missoula when my pool pal fromcampus, Gary Miller, informed me that all thetop action was at a roomon the 93 Strip call D & DBilliards. Gary and I threwour cues in the trunk of his1963 blue Bonnevilleconvertible and headedfor the Strip. Having acustom cue in your owncase in 1966 was aprestigious rite of passagein the pool world. It marked you as a serious player, aFast Eddie if you will.We entered D & D Billiards, young, cocky, and assuredthat we would soon own the place. I immediately leteveryone in the place know that I was looking for actionand would play anyone a game of straight pool to 150for 20 bucks.Without hesitation a player about four years my seniorpiped up, Ill take that bet. Id never seen him before. He looked sorta like James Dean and when he lit up aKool cigarette and threw a $20 on the table nonchalantlyI had a feeling I was out of my league. His name wasBruce Christensen and at only 22 years of age wasalready an accomplished world class straight pool player. We lagged, I lost, I broke; and Bruce, playing off the wallcuz hed left his cue in another room, ran 100 balls andout. Everyone wanted him to continue the run but hesaid he was tired, lit up another Kool, grabbed my twentyoff the light and SPLIT.Over the next four years of college I watched him playas much as possible and learned more form studyinghim than from any book Ive since read. Bruce dominatedpool in the 60s and 70s around our area. His main fortewas straight pool and his high run was 199. He used toplay us 80 ball no count (if he didnt run 80 balls it didntcount) and hed beat us all day and night. He held courtat D & D and Eight Ball Billiards and a classy old roomdowntown called Carrolls Billiards. I worked night forCarroll. After kicking the shoe clerks out, as Bruce calledthem, we would brush and cover the tables except forour favorite, and then play from 11:00 PM until 3:00 AM.Then wed go to the Main Spot Café where wed talkpool over steak and eggs and coffee and cigs until the

wee hours of the morning when reluctantly Id drag mytired ass off to some boring Biology class. The more Ihung out with Bruce and pursued pool the worse mygrades became, but damn, I was young and alive with apassion for something some people never experience;and I had a friend and a tutor that I adulated who hadcome to accept me as his pal and protégé.Carrolls Billiards had nine 4 ½ x 9 A.E. Schmidts andtwo 5 x 10 snooker tables, on which Bruce once ran outa perfect game. He made great money back in thosedays. Tournaments were nonexistent back then butpigeons were plentiful and Bruce plucked his pigeonswith the love and compassion of a priest, the pigeons

coming back for more andmore and loving every bit ofit . Bruce made so muchdough he even filed his taxreturns under the vocationof Pool Player, sendingIRS a chunk of cash everyApril. Roadies quit comingthrough Missoula becausehis reputation had becomeknown.Bruce, to some, seemed

aloof and distant. He wasnt the easiest person tocommunicate with, but then unlike me he wasnt one towaste words. If you did take the time to get to know him, however, you came to know that underneath his roughexterior was a heart of gold and a brilliant mind. Heenrolled with me at the University and with an inclinationtowards History like myself, pulled straight As for twoquarters before realizing there was no future in handingover his hard earned money to the University. It took mesix years and 100 Grand to figure that out.Bruce was a generous soul and never took pigeons tothe cleaners, sometimes giving them their money backand never hustling the Shoe Clerks. When Ted Harrishouse burnt down and his son was killed they started arelief fund. Bruce was the first to contribute and hedonated $1,000. Like his hero, Luther Wimpy Lassiter,Bruce wasnt one to hoard his winnings. When Bruce passed away last month of a coronary heartattack, a little bit of all of us that knew him well passedaway as well. He was 59, not young but certainly notold. He had retired from pool at 44 to take a job as acustodian with the University of Montana because hewas determined not to end up an old five and dimer likeso many old pool players he had known. Hed worked15 years and started coming back into my new poolroomabout 10 months ago. He was looking forward to retiringthis summer and wanted to start playing again. My own personal observation was that not only had Brucetaken a 14 year sabbatical because of his dedication tohis job, but I also feel at the time he quit pool at 44 hewas burnt out on the game. We are at peace with ourselves, one with theuniverse and one with God. Open minded to observemistakes without emotion. Correcting and re-correcting our fundamentals, always moving forwardtowards perfection, which is closer to the Lord. Our direction is to focus at perfecting the swing, thefluid movement, the graceful beauty of the stroke. It

becomes our major center of attention. Nothing elsematters. The swing is everything. Balls fly in thehole when the swing is right. It is a thoughtless thought, an effortless effort.Running balls now becomes an expression of theimagination through the patterns chosen and theshots selected.

OROVILLE POOL LEAGUEfrom: Kathi Giles

Oroville, WashingtonThe Oroville Pool League consisted of 26 teams playing in 2 divisions,13 teams in each division this year. Not only are the establishments ofOroville involved, but the Chesaw Tavern and the Tonasket Tavern alsohad teams that were included. This made for all kinds of friendly rivalry.League started in November and ran through the middle of February, making sure that all of the teams in each division played each other. Then the top six teams in each division played off to see who would beDivision Champion. The Division Champions then played off to see whichteam would be League Champion. Here are this years results.Division 1 Sponsor Captain1st Place Peerless Lounge Murphy Morefield2nd Place Pastime Tavern Kathi Giles3rd Place Chesaw Tavern Dan Engelbretson4th Place Peerless Lounge Ryan Milligan5th Place Pastime Tavern Dennis Frazier6th Place Oroville Eagles Kevin MathisDivision 2 Sponsor Captain1st Place Pastime Tavern Lew Taylor2nd Place Peerless Lounge Bob Dahl3rd Place Tonasket Tavern Kim Reyna4th Place Oroville Eagles Ron Wisener5th Place Chesaw Tavern Bill Nicholson6th Place Maxs Parts Plus Dan HandDuring the division play-offs the teams in Division 1 finished in the sameorder as they started. Division 2 play-offs had a couple of upsets though, with the 5th Place Chesaw Tavern team beating the 3rd Place TonasketTavern team and the 2nd Place Peerless Lounge team defeating the 1stPlace Pastime Tavern team. This resulted in having the Division 1Champion Peerless team, last years League Champions, playing theDivision 2 Champion Peerless team for League Championship. Needlessto say, it was a Peerless Lounge team that won, but this year it was BobDahls Division 2 team that took it! Congratulations you guys!!! It was anexciting year and we hope to see everyone back next fall to make it aneven better league.

Cue Ball RollingUp and Off the Cues

Here is a proposition shot Iactually saw at a carnivalonce. Place two cuesacross the width of the tableas shown. Place the tipsunderneath the rail andresting on the bed of thetable. Then place the cueball on the tips end of thecues. Gripping the two buttsof the cues, one in eachhand, while facing the cueball, lift the cues up off ofthe rail by where you arestanding, a couple ofinches. Slowly open thecues till the cue ball startsrolling towards you. Witheven pressure close thecues together till the cueball rolls up and off the cuesand onto the floor. Thistakes a little practice till youget the feel of how muchpressure to put on the cuesto keep the cue ball rolling. When I won two largestuffed animals in a rowthey wouldnt let me play

any more. Have fun with this one!

Q

A

I would like to buy a pooltable (3 1/2' X 7') but I amafraid I dont have enoughfloor space. I have neverseen anything that gives

a area required for the installation. Ihope you can provide me thisinformation because I really want myown table to practice on.Thank you.. Merv

The area needed for anytable depends on how YOU play and what YOU are willingto shoot with. A 3 1/2' x 7' table generally needs about 13'x 16' to accommodate a 58" cue. However, we supply many52" and 48" cues to home players who really want a table

but cant come up with the optimum space. For a 52" cue the sizewould be 12' x 15' and for a 48" cue 11 1/2' x 14 1/2'. This assumes a38" x 76" playing area + the length of the cue to each side + 6" of drawto each side. This formula would give us an optimum space for a 58"cue on an 8' table at 13 1/2' x 17' and a 9' table at 14' x 18'.One thing you have to remember when talking to anyone in the businessis there are many styles of players out there. What is true for one playeris not for another and this is a perfect example. A competitive playerputs way more importance on the cue he/she uses than a home playerwho sees the game as a social pastime, neither needs are unimportant.I had a customer who insisted on putting a 4x 8' table in a room 10'wide. The 48" cues get more than a workout! If you are serious about how you play, I would recommend that you usethis formula to find the size you need for a table:Measure the playing surface area (the area inside the rails). To both the width and the length add the length of the cue to bothsides. Then add the space you want to draw the cue back to both sides andthere is what YOU need. New Shaft Gives More Anglesto Shooting

Stop and think for a moment The only reason cue sticks are round. Letme repeat that so you clearly understand. The only reason cue sticksare round is because they can be turned out on a lathe very quickly.Curl your index finger as though you are grasping your cue. What

shape do you see? O? or ?

Now imagine your backhand stroking (or swinging) as some put it.1. Is your elbow in tight against your body?2. Does your hand or wrist twist while stroking the cue?3. Can you detect any side-to-side misalignment with your cue?4. Would you consider your final delivery stroke a perfect pendulumfollow through? If you answered no, to one or more of these questions perhaps you shouldat least try a triangle cue. After all what do you have to lose?More important what do you have to gain. This new design will keep a new player from developing bad habits. Bestof all it may break any bad habits a seasoned player may have developed.Realize one thing (the stranger if feels in your hand, the more you probablyneed it).Think about this, 100% of the out come on every shot, depends on 100%of everything you do before the shot. Period !!!

a gut full of the petty bickering, sharking and back-stabbing that permeatesany sport where ambition is involved.Upon returning to my room I also observed a fresher approach to thegame. He just wanted to have fun and be around friends. He startedplaying the Monday and Thursday nine-ball tourneys and after 14 yearswas playing pretty damn good using a different house cue each week. The night before he died he bought a high end custom Hearn from me.He showed the new cue to all his pals, bought a few rounds of beers andwas as happy as Id ever seen him. He ran 3 and out on Fudsy to take thedrivers seat and 4 and out on Jimmy Spears to win the tourney. The nextmorning he didnt show for work and his supervisor found him at home, dead of a coronary, dressed for work with a pot of coffee brewed.Bruce went out a champion and he left the planet doing what he did bestand having fun at it. There are worse ways to go. He had rekindled hislove for the game and introspective as he had reaffirmed his faith in hisfellow man/woman that in spite of the negativity that surrounds our sport, there is a positive side of comradery, sportsmanship, honor, loyalty and alove of the game that can indeed, transcend all of the negatives. We all will make the passage out of this life to God knows what or where, and God aint telling us, just giving us a few clues. Bruce left in good formand super stroke; an Old Montana Boy that never had the desire to leaveBig Sky Country for fortune or fame.I never knew such a player; he never cheated, never threw a match, andalways shook your hand when he lost. He was a humble winner andnever bragged about his triumphs. To all of us that loved him first as a humane being and secondly as a poolplayer, there is a void that can only be filled by remembering his grin ashe laughed, Rack em up, you turkeys.I hope if there is a pool heaven that Wimpy steers him clear up there. Ifso, the ring games just got a little tougher.Rest in Peace Old Buddy,Your friend, Cue Ball

Tom Scott Memorialby: Johnny Siefke, Local player and proud supporter of this tournament

March 23-24, 2002Libby, MontanaIt was time once again for a good many pool players from near and far toconverge on Libby. More specifically the Mint Bar and the V.F.W., all withone thing in mind, try to claim a portion of the prize money and see whowould stake claim as Champion in the mens and womens divisions. It all started at the V.F.W. Post 1548 on Friday night the 22nd of March asseveral players had already made it to town and took part in the MiniTournament. The top three finishers in the mens division were as follows:1st Gib Koch (Kalispell)2nd Andy Jackson (Pinehurst, ID)3rd Colter Landt (Helena)after battling through a field of twenty-four.The top three finishers in the womens division were:1st Jane Plant (Belgrade)2nd Mary Garcia (Butte)3rd Patty Dunning (Libby)after stroking through a field of fourteen.Saturday morning saw the beginning of a long day of play as fifty-eightmen stroked away in an attempt to qualify for Sundays final sixteen. Thistook place on four brackets of (15) in two flights of 30, one flight startedthat morning and the second around five p.m.At the same time thirty-two women attempted to shoot their way intoSundays final eight, as they fought it out on two brackets of sixteen, onein the a.m. and one that afternoon.Double elimination, race to four, ball in hand rules was the format forSaturdays play. The top four players from each bracket in the mensdivision found their way to the sweet sixteen and the top four womenfrom each bracket made up the elite eight. Sundays play was a race tofive, double elimination with all players starting fresh, regardless of a lossfrom Saturday.Top 16 Men: Calcutta1st $514 Shannon Gibson, Great Falls, MT $4402nd $293 Tauno Wainiopaa, Creston, BC $3313rd $224 Don Lundy, Kalispell, MT $2204th $119 Dennis Brown, Creston, BC $1125/6 $ 89 Joe Horner, Pinehurst, ID/Tony Etchechoury, Post Falls, ID7/8 $ 70 Tim Scott, Libby, MT/Dave Garcia, Butte, MT9/12 Mark Johns, Creston, BC/Cliff Lorengo, Butte, MT/

We also held a second chance open tournament at the Minton Sunday afternoon as the finals were played at the V.F.W. The topfinishers in the Second Chance: Colter Landt (Helena), Judy Lorengo(Butte), Tyler Scott (Seattle & Libby), Steve Plant (Belgrade).A special thanks to the two bars who played host, (the V.F.W. and theMint) and of course thank yous go out to their respective staffs. A bigthanks to Bert Stoltz of Beasley Amusement for his help in all of the tablemoving, set-up and prep as it became somewhat of an ordeal. Due to thefact that we practically had to beg, borrow, buy and steal the extra tablesneeded to support this size of a tournament, eleven tables in all. Manythanks to those folks who helped to supply these tables. In closing it was a terrific weekend of pool, and a hell of a party, as thehappy go lucky Butte Fun Bunch provided us with a great deal ofentertainment along the way. Hats off to all the people involved in puttingthis thing together; Tim Scott, Patty Dunning, Johnny Siefke, Doug andMargi Carr, and several others who may go unmentioned, but mostcertainly not forgotten. A special thanks to Brian Kair, who somewhattook over the spot of M.C. without the title.General consensus conveyed to me from just about every player whocame, was we will be back next year and they plan on bringing moreplayers with them. We here at the Tom Scott Memorial want to say thanksto all involved and for everyones support and of course we hope to seeeveryone here again next March.

Cindy Doty, of Longview WA, had animpressive string of strong victories over

her opponents, beating Kat Harrison (7-0), Terie Reichmuth (7-0), JeriEngh (7-4), Julie Valdez (7-2), and last tour stop champion MonaRemedios (7-5) before losing her first match to Jeanne. She then beatMary Hopkin (7-4) to move on to the final match.Jeanne maintained a tremendous drive of wins, plowing through everyopponent she encountered, defeating Liz Schwartzreich (7-5), LindaCarter (7-3), Mary Olson (7-5), Andrea Saenz-Maes (7-6), Sarah JosieLeroy (7-1) and Cindy Doty (7-5). Cindy Doty came back from her previousloss to Jeanne, with a strong win over Mary Hopkin, and very much

determined to pull out a win inthe finals. The final match was to be abattle of the titans, where skill, mental strength and ambitionwere equally matched. Jeanneand Cindy traded wins evenlyacross the first four games (2-2)with Jeanne then making astrong push ahead to gain a (4-2) lead. As poised anddetermined as ever, Cindypushed for a comeback, winningthe next game (4-3). Despite thetremendous effort, Jeanne stoodfirm, taking the next three gamesto win and sweeping the entire

tournament as champion. Jeannes spoils from this incredible victoryincluded a paid spot at the WPBA Midwest Classic and a $529 cashprize!

The top 12 for the tournament were as follows:1st Jeanne Crowell, Bandon, OR, $529 + paid $500 entry fee to WPBA event2nd Cindy Doty, Longview, WA, $4233rd Mary Hopkin, Richland, WA, $3174th Tamré Geené-Rogers, Bothell, WA, $1685th/6th Sara Josie Leroy, Newberg, OR Mona Remedios, Vancouver,

The NWPAs second tour stop showed continued growth and successwith an impressive 39-player field and an extremely efficient event. There

were players from as far as Canada,Idaho, Wisconsin and New York tocompete in this event! The NWPAattributed much of this success to thegreat showing of new playingmembers from Oregon: MarthaHartsell (Eugene) Diane Krausse(Eugene) Kendra Marcoulier (Bend),Karla Tias (Warm Springs) and JeanneCrowell (Bandon). Other new playerswere Jeri Engh (Osceola, WI),Elizabeth Jensen (Boise, ID), BeckyRowell (Taholia, WA) and NatalieCharley (Taholia, WA). The event also

owes its success to the fine hospitality of Q Street co-owners Dennis andSharon Blackwell and Jeff and Kim Mishler. They were fabulous hosts, offering up all 15 of their newly refinished 9ft tables, with free practicetime from 8-10am each morning, as well as fine food and atmosphere. Thanks to the great organizational efforts and attention of TournamentDirector Ted Woodward and Assistant Dan Coffman. Players unanimouslycommented on their appreciation and marvel over such a smoothly runtournament. Excitement for this tournament was anticipated simply forthe fact that it was a qualifier. But excitement mounted as word spreadabout media coverage for the event as well. Heather Doherty, NWPAsmedia coordinator, arranged for full local media news coverage of theevent. The NWPA was very pleased and thankful for the great pre-eventfeature coverage from television news stations, KMTR, KVAL and KEZI.Players interested in seeing a copy of the stories (featuring Martha Hartsell,Julie Valdez and Diane Krausse) may inquire at the NWPA website at:www.nwpatour.com.Comments from almost all players spoke to this success and the senseof fine competitive spirit and fun. The next NWPA tour stop will be heldJune 22-23, 2002 at Shotzes in Everett, Washington.

Position. Shape. When we can, its our ticket toparadise. When we cannot, its our ticket hell.In pool, nothing is more important than havingcontrol of the cue ball. Most of the shots thatwe miss are due to letting go of the cue ball. Most times when we miss shape, it is also dueto letting go of the cue ball. What is letting go of the cue ball?Letting go of the cue ball means that you aresurrendering control of the cue ball to theelements and conditions of the table. I shouldcontrol the cue ball, not the table. The tablewill provide me with pot luck position. Toavoid pot luck position, I should always beaware of four factors that affect position:a) The shot I am facingb) The distance to the next shotc) The route or path to the next shotd) Any and all obstacles in betweenAlong with these factors come thefollowing questions:Where am I going? How am I going to get there?Should I use any english?Should I use a soft, medium or hard stroke?Am I following or drawing back?Am I utilizing left or right hand english?Am I using running or reverse englishDo I need to use a rail?If I do need to use the rails, how many?Is there anything in my way?If there is something in my way, how am Igoing to get around it?Do I need to take an alternate position route? The list can go on and on, but these 12questions cover just about everything. Now thinkback to the last time you were faced with a toughshot and near impossible position. Chances arethat you didnt ask yourself half of thesequestions. You probably stabbed wildly at a shotand either got lousy shape, or hooked yourself.I did it yesterday. I dont do it all of the time, butIm not immune to it, and neither are you. Thequestions are important because they guide youthrough the factors, therefore guiding youthrough the conditions that you are facing. When looking at the questions, we can breakthem down into different categories so that weunderstand exactly what it is that we are askingourselves.

Should I?Am I?Do I?If I?

If there is?

Where am I going? How am I going to get there?

Lets start with Should I. It is a determiningquestion that we ask ourselves when we arefaced with more than one option. Am I is a self-examining question we ask as if we areperforming a checklist. Do I is anotherdetermining question we ask ourselves whenwe are looking to choose the best option out ofmany. If I is a cautionary question. We ask thiswhen we are searching for any bumps in theroad along the path we are examining. We askthis when looking for any hazards along the paththe cue ball will be traveling. If there is is thesolving question we ask ourselves when wehave identified the hazard, and we take theappropriate measures to avoid it. That bringsus to the two most important questions, Wheream I going and How am I going to get there?Where am I going?Where are you going? Are you going the lengthof the table? Are you stopping the cue ball? Areyou taking three of four rails? Next time yourshooting with a buddy, ask him Where are yougoing with the cue ball? Chances are hell tellyou how hes going to get there. Why do I knowthis? Because most players skip through thePLANNING STAGE. He can tell you how hesgoing to get there, but he hasnt got a clue as towhere he is actually going. One of the keys toplaying pin point position is:

IDENTIFY YOUR PREDETERMINEDDESTINATION

It is extremely important to know exactly whereyou want the cue ball to go. Every top levelplayer will tell you that being a hair or two offtarget can mean the difference between runningthe rack or racking the balls.

How am I going to get there?Once you have identified where you are going, then we will look for a way to get there.Remember, we plan, then execute. We neverdo this in reverse, and we never do both at thesame time. They are two different and separatetasks. How do the questions relate to the 4 factors?

Factor #1: The shotWhere am I going?

How am I going to get there?Should I use any english?

Should I use a soft medium or hard stroke?Am I following or drawing back?

Am I utilizing right or left hand english?Am I using running or reverse english?

In The Zone with Blackjack David Sapolis

Getting ShapeSome of us never stop to ask for directions

Factor #2: Distance to the next shotWhere am I going?

How am I going to get there?Should I use a soft, medium, or hard stroke?

Do I need to use a rail?If I do need to use the rails, how many?

Factor #3: The route or path to the nextshot

Where am I going? How am I going to get there?

Should I use any english?Should I use a soft, medium, or hard stroke?

Am I following or drawing back?Am I using right or left english?

Am I using running or reverse english?Do I need to use a rail?

If I do need to use the rails, how many?Is there anything in my way?

If there is something in my way, how am Igoing to get around it?

Do I need to take an alternate position route?Factor #4: Any and all obstacles

Is there anything in my way?If there is something in my way, how am I

going to get around it?Do I need to take an alternate position route?By running through the factors, and thequestions, you will learn that getting shape is aprocess of careful forethought combined withflawless execution. Its no longer pot luck. Thefactors and questions relate not only to pool, but also in every day life. Take any goal thatyou have set for yourself and run it through thesequestions:

Where am I going? How am I going to get there?

Is there something in my way?If there is something in my way, how am I

going to get around it?Do I need to take an alternate route?

This is how we can set and accomplish shortterm goals during practice. Shot by shot, we canenhance our goal setting skills by experiencingthe completion of the small tasks we are facedwith during each rack. We are not only settinggoals, but we are realizing the completion ofour goals. Small goals lead to bigger goals.Pin point position is achieved by practicing astructured and consistent pre-shot routine.Simply wishing and hoping for position (as wellother stab in the dark techniques) all have onething in common: The absence of carefulplanning. Use the steps outlined and watch youraccuracy increase.
