If someone from Europe were to come up with a plan on how to sabotage African farming, it would probably look something like the following. We

would start by forbidding Africans from selling more than a certain amount of agricultural goods to us, by introducing quotas. As a second step we would introduce a tariff on African agricultural products, making them a lot more expensive than they normally would be. Thirdly, we would start giving out large subsidies to our own farmers. By forcing taxpayers to send money to European farmers, it becomes a lot easier for them to compete with their African counter-SDUWV��ZKR�KDYH�VLJQL¿FDQWO\�ORZHU�SURGXFWLRQ�FRVWV��,I�\RX�VXEVLGLVH�IDUPHUV��you are encouraging them to produce more goods than we need, and the result RI�WKDW�LV�D�PDVVLYH�VXUSOXV�RI�DJULFXOWXUDO�JRRGV��$V�D�¿QDO�GHDWK�VWURNH�WR�$I-rican agriculture, we would then dump our surplus on the African market at a considerably lower price than what it is actually worth, making it impossible for poor African farmers to compete with European ones, not only in Europe, but in their own countries as well.

,n the latest elections for the European Par-liament, several parties with far-right agen-

das managed to win seats in the upcoming composition of the Parliament. Some of these parties are openly neo-Nazis with anti-Se-mitic agendas, and all of them have adopted anti-immigration campaigns, mostly due to ,VODPRSKRELD��7KHUH�PD\�EH�VRPH�YDULDWLRQV�in their rhetoric, but all of the far-right par-ties have one thing in common: euroscep-ticism. The austerity policy, together with the perception that the European integration progress undermines the national identities and sovereignty of states, euroscepticism has proven to be a milestone for the popularity of IDU�ULJKW�SDUWLHV�LQ�(XURSH��%XW�ZKDW�DUH�WKHVH�parties truly like? Let’s meet the most popular and extreme ones.

The undisputed winner of this year’s Euro-SHDQ�HOHFWLRQV�ZDV�WKH�SDUW\�)URQW�1DWLRQDO��ZKLFK�JDWKHUHG�DURXQG�����RI�WKH�YRWHV��,WV�current leader is Marie Le Pen, the daughter of the party’s founder Jean-Marie Le Pen. 'HVSLWH�0DULH¶V�UHFHQW�HIIRUW�WR�PDNH�D�WXUQ�towards less extreme ideas, the party is set on an anti-immigration agenda. Some of its most important members for example deny the ho-locaust by considering the number of deaths DQ�H[DJJHUDWLRQ�DQG�WKH�JDV�FKDPEHUV�³D�PL-nor detail”. To make things worse, Jean-Ma-rie Le Pen suggested the ebola virus would be D� ³VROXWLRQ´� WR� (XURSH¶V� LPPLJUDWLRQ� LVVXH��,Q� WKH�HFRQRPLF�VHFWRU�� WKH�SDUW\�VXSSRUWV�D�protected economy, with the state being the RQO\�UHJXODWRU��FUHDWLQJ�D�SUR¿OH�HYHQ�FORVHU�to National Socialism.

The mem-bers of the party seem to have an obsession with enforcing the strictest law-enforcement SRVVLEOH��$V�*UHHW�:LOGHUV�KDV�VDLG��KLV�SDUW\�WRJHWKHU�ZLWK�WKH�)UHQFK�)URQW�1DWLRQDO��DLP�to exploit the vast crisis that Europe is fac-LQJ�LQ�RUGHU�WR�³GHVWUR\�WKH�(8�IURP�ZLWKLQ´�by blocking policymaking in the Parliament, ZKLFK�KDSSHQV�WR�EH�WKH�RQO\�(8�LQVWLWXWLRQ�with full democratic legitimacy.

*UHHN�IDU�ULJKW�QHR�1D]L�SDUW\�*ROGHQ�'DZQ�DOVR�HQMR\HG�D�ULVH�LQ�WKHLU�VXSSRUW�OHYHOV�LQ�WKH�ODWHVW�(3�HOHFWLRQV��*ROGHQ�'DZQ�KDV�DG-opted a strong rhetoric against immigration DQG�WKH�FRUUXSWHG�*UHHN�SROLWLFDO�V\VWHP��DV�ZHOO�DV�DJDLQVW�WKH�(8��7KH�SDUW\¶V�DFWLYLWLHV�LQFOXGH�SURPRWLQJ�µ*UHHN�RQO\¶� IRRG�EDQNV��organising military training for its members, attacking immigrants, as well as arranging the murder of a left-wing rap artist, Pavlos )LVVDV��7KLV�SDUWLFXODU�DFWLRQ� WULJJHUHG�D�VH-ULHV�RI�HYHQWV�UHVXOWLQJ�LQ�WKH�YDVW�PDMRULW\�RI�the party’s leaders being imprisoned, with the accusation of forming a terrorist organisation. $IWHU� LQYHVWLJDWLRQV�� SKRWRV� VXUIDFHG� RI� WKH�SDUW\¶V� OHDGHUV�ZHDULQJ�:HKUPDFK�XQLIRUPV�DQG�KROGLQJ�PHHWLQJV�ZLWK� WKH�1D]L�ÀDJ�RQ�the background. The party’s MPs are also degrading the importance of the holocaust. They even referred to Hitler as an important ¿JXUH�ZKR�GLG�DOO�WKH�QHFHVVDU\�³GLUW\�ZRUN´��'HVSLWH�WKHVH�UHYHODWLRQV��*ROGHQ�'DZQ�ZDV�rewarded with three seats in the European Parliament with the title of the third most SRSXODU�*UHHN�SDUW\�

8QIRUWXQDWHO\��WKHUH�DUH�HYHQ�PRUH�IDU�ULJKW�political parties that can be found all across (XURSH�IURP�6ZHGLVK�DQG�)LQQLVK�QDWLRQDO-LVWV�WR�WKH�,WDOLDQ�/HJD�1RUGH��7KLV�VLWXDWLRQ�poses a clear treat to the fundamental values DQG�GHPRFUDF\�RI�(XURSHDQ�FLYLOL]DWLRQ��,W�JRHV�ZLWKRXW�VD\LQJ�WKDW�ZH�OLYH�LQ�GLI¿FXOW�times, however, this is not an excuse to sup-port such extreme and discriminating ideol-ogies.
