Unlock Your Potential - by Dale CamuyongTo all new and returning students of the Asper School - Welcome! My name is Dale Camuyong and I am both honored and excited to be your 2014-2015 Commerce Students’ Association (CSA) President. The days of working (and/or partying) five days a week have dwindled, you’re all caught up on Suits, leaves are beginning to get a nice crunch to it, and the reality of going back to school hits you - summer has finally ended. But this does not need to be something sad. Our beloved Drake Centre (which, might I add, is looking a lot better with these new renos) will soon be filled with the chatter of 1600+ energetic students. Among some of the top things said in the building include: “Do I need the textbook for Business Communications?”“What is the end of the revision period?”“I’m trying to switch out of Harmatz’ class.”“I’m trying to switch into Harmatz’ class.” “This HR prof is awesome.” But being an Asper student means your student experience is not limited to what goes on in the classrooms. In fact, getting involved with the many student opportunities Asper has to offer will be your differentiating factor when you graduate. The CSA plays a large role in your overall student experience. The CSA is a student organization comprised of ALL students (you!) in the faculty of management, led by an executive team of 7 and a

council of 50 student leaders.

From when you get a locker and some Asper gear in the Commerce Connection Store in 144 Drake Centre, to when you suit-up for the Annual Commerce Business Banquet, and when you celebrate your hard work at our legendary Commerce Socials, the CSA Council provides all Asper students with many events and services that enhance your experience.

With that said, you have two options. Option one is you can go about this year with your nose in the books and be on your merry way out of this building as quickly as possible. Option two is you put yourself out there and get more out of your degree by attending CSA events and

taking advantage of CSA student services. I’m not saying the second option is easy, but I can guarantee you will be better positioned for long-term success - professionally and in your personal development. In closing, instead of leaving words of encouragement I will challenge you to get more out of your year. Check out what those booths are all about in the Fish Bowl. Become a STAG member. Apply for that committee position. You’ll be surprised how far you can get when you unlock your potential. I wish you all a memorable year and I look forward to meeting you!

Shinerama 2014

Keep Calm & Shine On!

6

UMANITOBA

Are you looking to get involved on campus this year and not sure how? Are you like I was in my first year: afraid to branch out and take risks and explore opportunities? Or are you nearing the end of your degree and looking to make a few last memories before being sent off into the great unknown that is reality. Whatever the case may be, let Shinerama be the solution you are looking for! For those of you who are unsure what exactly Shinerama is, let me give you a quick background. Shinerama (or Shine as we so loving call it) is Canada’s largest post-secondary student run fundraising campaign. The University of Manitoba is one of over 65 extended education facilities that participate in Shinerama on a yearly basis and for the past 29 years students from the U of M have success-fully ran this campaign, continuing to lay the groundwork for a bigger and better campaign in years to come. Luckily for us that means we get to benefit from the hard work done by these individuals through the years, take their ideas, give them our own personal touch, and reach higher than ever before. Our official fundraising goal for 2014 is $42,318 (because who wants to be basic and have a rounded out number?), but trust me when I say that we would not be heart broken if we shattered this goal!

Now you may be wondering, ‘okay, but where is all this money going to?’ Well let me tell you! Each and every penny raised by Shinerama goes directly to Cystic Fibrosis Canada to help fund new research projects, as well as provide treatment plans to patients living with cystic fibrosis. If you already know what cystic fibrosis is, then feel free to skip ahead. If not, here is a quick lesson for you.

- Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that causes mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive tract- Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. 1 in

3600 Canadians will be born with CF- There are over 1900 known different mutations of the gene that causes cystic fibrosis

- Large quantities of digestive enzymes (average of 20 pills per day) must be consumed after every meal- Many cystic fibrosis patients require a double lung transplant before their 25th birthday, and another later in life

- There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis, although treatment plans are greatly extending life expectancy

Page 7: The BottomLine September 2014

7

Doesn’t sound too glamorous does it? Having gotten the chance to meet many members of the Cystic Fibrosis com-munity, both patients and family members alike, and hearing their stories about how huge portions of their days are spent taking drugs, doing endless hours of physiotherapy, and eating copious amounts of food, it’s hard to believe they have time to do anything else in a day. And yet these individuals are some of the toughest people I know. Always on the go, always ready for anything. The saying “wake up ready to take on the day” applies more to them than any-one else I have ever met.

These fighters are the reason we do what we do. They deserve a better life than this and who better to help them but us? This was the exact realization a few students from Wilfrid Laurier University had back in 1964 when they held the first annual Shine Day on their campus, raising over a thousand dollars and setting spark to a national campaign. Fast forward 50 years and here we are, with Shinerama being bigger and better than those visionaries ever could have hoped to dream.

To date Shinerama has raised over $25,000,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada! These funds have given thousands of Canadians better access to treatments and helped researchers advance their studies, discovering many new drugs and nutrients that fight the disease. In fact, for each of the 50 years that Shinerama has been in existence, the average life expectancy has increased from 5 years old to 49! To put that in perspective, it means that for every year of Shine, 10 months is added to the life expectancy of someone living with cystic fibrosis. Really gets you thinking; what would you do with 10 months?

All of our work throughout the summer has been culminating up to one day. Ladies and gentlemen, may I proudly introduce Shine Day! Shine Day is by far our biggest fundraising push of the entire Shinerama campaign on which we expect to raise over $12,000!

Set to be held on Wednesday, September 10th, Shine Day is a day where hundreds of U of M students hit the streets of down-town Winnipeg in fluorescent orange t-shirts and do anything from shine shoes to street performances and most things in between (seriously, you name it, it’s probably been attempted) in exchange for donations to Shinerama. We are definitely a sight to see, and a hard one to miss. The best part? You are more than welcome - no, strongly encouraged - to volunteer with us and be a part of the excitement!

Shine Day is a great way to get involved in your university. During Buddy Day, U1 Orientation, and Frosh Week, keep a lookout for the people in orange having the times of their lives. They will be able to give you more information on how what we are doing and how you can get involved. By signing up you are doing more than getting out of a few classes, meeting some amazing people, and getting a pretty slick shirt; you also get to experience that amazing feeling when you know that the work you are putting in is helping to save lives! It’s that feeling that has kept us going through the summer, and I promise there is nothing better.

For more information about this years campaign you can visit umanitoba.ca/Shinerama. This site will also allow you to sign up to volunteer on hine Day, or donate online if you are unable to make it out.

Be sure to check us out on social media for more up-to-date information, pictures, and our overall hilarity! Follow @ShineToba on Twitter and Instagram, and like UManitoba Shine on Facebook.

Hopefully with your help we will finally be able to say that CF doesn’t stand for cystic fibrosis, but for CURE FOUND!

I remember my first year...… and I learned a few things from it

that I would like to pass along to you.

1. You get out what you put inHere is a general tip for all you first years out there to start things off. Like anything else in life, your effort and attitude will have a great impact on how positive or negative your experience will be here at Asper. Do not sell yourself short, get involved and try your best to put yourself out there. Go make new friends, university is fun.

2. Make a planTake some time to go see an advisor if you are not sure which courses to take or if you are having trouble understanding all those core courses and prerequisites; it could save you from having to take a summer class and studying for a math final over August long weekend.

3. Career Development Centre and the Coop ProgramTake advantage of the CDC. It is awesome AND it is free. Fine tune your resume, learn how to present yourself in a job interview, and get involved in Co-op! Go talk to Liza or Meredith down the hallway by the computer lab. They are both really nice and the Co-op program is a great oppor-tunity to get relevant business experience and make some good money doing it.

4. Exchange ProgramI really wish I knew about the exchange my first year because it becomes more difficult to work into your schedule later on in your university career. Get a few buddies together, go by yourself, it doesn’t matter. You can take classes from Hong Kong to France and all the credit transfers over. Truly an amazing opportunity I highly recommend taking advantage of this. Go talk with Rowena Krentz in the advisors office about your options and do it early!

5. TextBooksHey, first years, if you don’t need the online labs or assignments that come with only the newest addition, you should definitely try to find some used textbooks. I bought a brand new 170 dollar psychology textbook and read about 20 pages of it because you can usually get all the info you need a lot faster from the lecture notes or a website or an old textbook. So hey, new books are whack, Jack.

Page 9: The BottomLine September 2014

Welcome to Asper all First Years! First and foremost, welcome to the best four, five, or ten years of your life! Even if you don’t realize it now, Asper will become your second home. Whether it is promoting a charity campaign, an upcoming commerce social, or preparing for the Business Banquet, the CSA always has something on the go that you can get involved with!

So, let me guess...you’re freaking out because you’re late for class, and you don’t know how to get to the fourth floor in the Drake Center. You’re confused by all the STAG names (don’t worry I still am), and don’t know the difference between CSA, CDC and JDC. You want to be involved but don’t know how to take that first step? Well hopefully you got an overwhelming amount of handouts and information on Buddy Day regarding all the groups Asper has to offer, but the most relevant to you at this point would be the First Year Council (FYC)!

FYC is a group of first year Asper Students who represent all the first years in Asper (basically what it sounds like). There are two first years reps, who are elected by their fellow first years, and then a committee of eight people who

the reps select through an interview process. I, along with my co-chair, Eric Frizado, were elected as the First Year Co-Chairs last October, and I haven’t looked back since! Once we got elected, we held interviews for the rest of our

committee. So if you’re not into putting your face up around the Drake Center, you can sign up for the any of the other positions! They include two social co-chairs, two charity co-chairs, two fundraising co-chairs, a finance chair, and a photographer/marketer. FYC is all about having fun, getting to know/meet other people, and using it as a step in the right direction if you plan to pursue the CSA!

My first year would not have been the same if I didn’t get involved. I met amazing people, and had experiences I would never have had otherwise. The coolest part about FYC is that it’s the first time that most students get complete control over events. The social co-chairs put on the annual “Get Lei’d Social”, and the charity co-chairs hold events with the Boys and Girls Club of Winnipeg. These are some photos of our committee at our events!

I hope you all enjoyed Buddy Day and are starting to see some familiar faces in the hallways! Keep in mind a great way to reconnect with your fellow First Years and Buddies is to get involved. I highly suggest you join First Year Council; you won’t regret it!

Follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/firstyearcommittee to see what we were up to last year, and to stay up to date with the upcoming election and events!

If you have any questions, please feel free to stop me in the hallways to introduce yourself! Have a wonderful year :)

Are you not sure what fork to eat your salad with? Or whether wearing your birthday suit or a clown costume are the appro-priate attire to meet the CEO of a company in? Well we have an event for you. This year we will be hosting the 11th Annual Etiquette Evening which will be occurring in late October. The purpose of the event is to provide you with all the in’s and out’s of etiquette and what’s appropriate to do at the dinner table when meeting those big scary people in suits for the first time. The event is strategically hosted a few weeks before the 48th Annual Business Banquet, this event is the perfect opportunity to brush up on your dining etiquette and learn invalu-able networking tips before the big night! For those of you that are going into your first year of university this event was made for you. What was once maybe seen as appropriate in high school is no longer the case when you enter the real world. We’ll help you to know what to say, what cutlery to use and what’s appropriate to wear to formal events. If you want to look fine come and dine on October 30th!

You may have a killer resume, and be the best candidate for the job, but a successful job interview is the most critical component to landing your dream job.

Job interviews can be nerve-rack-ing, especially if you aren’t well prepared. Just like any other skill, when it comes to interviews, practice really does make perfect. If you take the time to do your research about the company, prepare your answers in advance, and understand the basics of proper interview etiquette - you’ll make a great first impression and be bound for success.

Mock Interviews are a three-day event held in early October and late January. Basically, a mock interview is a trial exercise that simulates a real job interview, providing you, the candidate, with an invaluable experience. You’ll learn what to expect in a job interview, and have the opportunity to improve your self-presenta-tion skills. Interviews are conducted by real Winnipeg company repre-sentatives, just as if they were hiring for their firm. Past companies have included MB Hydro, Investors Group, and Great West Life.

Interviews typically last one hour: 30 minutes of authentic questions from actual employers and the remaining time is allotted to feedback from the employer. Interviewers will provide you with constructive feedback on all aspects of the interview process from your professional appearance to your handshake. Mock Interviews provide you with a safe environment to practice interview skills to gain both confidence and experience.

Who can attend? Mock Interviews are designed for students in all levels of their degree and of all majors. Everyone can benefit from additional interview practice and constructive feedback. Keep an eye out for posters and a sign-up booth in Drake at the begin-ning of September!

FIRST WEEK 101By George Semchuk

Oh Lawwwwd, there is so much going on.

… Booths… Luncheons… Beer Gardens …no minors…… Frosh… Classes

Go check out the booths ask the people at the booths why they are sitting there. Lots of opportunities to get involved and meet new people. I did Shinerama my first year and it led to a few good friendships and many other opportunities; It also looks good on your resume. Luncheons are always good. It doesn’t matter if you don’t really know what it’s all about just go and shmooze, it is great networking experience. Thats another thing, You will be told you have to “network” a lot. If you overcome your fear of talking to strangers, this “networking” is actually pretty fun and a great way to get a job. Beer Gardens are just fenced off areas where you can drink beer at a good price with your buddies in the sun. Frosh is a huge party outside and it’s a lot of fun I think you should get your tickets for that. Don’t let classes stress you out in the first week, plenty of time for that later, but make sure you are organized and know the important deadlines and you have the syllabus all nice and highlighted.

member of the Asper Students Co-operative Association (ASCA)!This year the council is the biggest that it has ever been and we are excited to channel the talents and experiences of the council members into ensuring the success of co-op students through events, mentorship, providing business cards and connecting co-op students.
