Mitchell was inundated with visitors on the weekend of September 28-October 1 for a huge weekend of reunions.

The Yumba Reunion commemorated the bulldozing of the Yumba in 1968 and celebrated Gunggari resilience, achievements and continuation of culture. A highlight of the reunion was the long awaited homecoming of three Gunggari artefacts, handed back by the Tinney family of Victoria to Gunggari Elders. The story of the artefacts dates back to the beginning of settlement in the Maranoa, spans many generations and two states…story continued on page 5.

Meanwhile, the Mitchell Magpies flew (and drove) into town from far and wide to celebrate the centenary of the ‘black, white and black’ rugby league club. A hard-working team of volunteers set up an outstanding display of memorabilia in the Clubhouse at the RSL Sports Complex charting the history of the proud football club which was open throughout the weekend. On Saturday morning players past and present marched down the main street. They later regrouped in the evening on the hallowed field of ‘Magpie Park’ for a gala dinner, where interviews of past players enlightened and entertained the 400 strong crowd…story continued on p4.

The Reunion weekend, along with the MAD Ladies Day & Dance Concert, Billy Moore Dinner, Helen Everingham Workshop, Mitchell Races and Debutant Ball plus some much needed rain have provided a vital economic and morale boost for the Mitchell community. The outlook is now much brighter as we begin the downhill run to Christmas!

Mitchell’s big Reunion Weekend

On Saturday September 22, dignitaries, ex-service people,Light Horse representatives and community members gathered to commemorate the centenary of Roma’s Heroes Avenue. One hundred years prior, on September 20 1918, the son’s of Roma who fell in fields afar were honoured with the planting of 27 bottle trees in their memory. Today 140 trees accompanied by brass plates commemorate the lives of Roma citizens who made the ultimate sacrifice and Heroes Avenue forms the backdrop to Roma’s ANZAC Day march. His Excellency the Hon. Paul de Jersey AC and his wife laid a wreath alongside French Embassy Representative Flight Lieutenant Quentin Gautier, RSL Queensland President Mr. Anthony Ferris, RSL Western District President Mr. Max Foot OAM, RSL Roma Sub Branch President, Mr George Mehay, Member for Warrego, Ms Ann Leahy MP, Mayor Tyson Golder and The Lighthorse Brigade.

The Light Horse representatives, five from the 11th Light Horse Roma troop and six from south east Queensland began their march from Roma’s Railway Station and processed to the Roma Cenotaph. Their involvement on this occasion was also to commemorate the last Lighthorse battle in Palestine which took place at Samakh on September 25, 1918. Samakh was on the most direct road to Damascus and was taken in a pre-dawn charge over unseen ground. The Battle of Samakh was a victory that precipitated the surrender of the Ottoman army a month later.

On Saturday, October 6 , Roma Red Cross held a very successful Chelsea Flower show. The annual event was well attended and in spite of the dry conditions, a beautiful display of flowers was assembled.

Morning Melodies is a music morning held for frail, aged, disabled or socially isolated

members of the community on the first Tuesday of the month from February to December with the exception of November when it is held on the second Tuesday due to the Melbourne Cup. So the next Morning Melodies will be held at the Roma Bowls Club on November 13 at 9:30am. It promises to be a great morning of signing and dancing with the Dalby Country Singers also performing. December’s musical

It’s almost Cup time - yeeha! There will be lots of fab stuff going on - entertainment, dancing, feasting, socialising, frocking up and even some racing! Join 10 000 of your

Remembrance Day in Muckadilla will be just that little bit more memorable this year as it will play host to the opening of the Harry Murray VC Dedication Wall. The new wall will be dedicated to the known service men and women who served in War and Peace time from the Boer War to Afghanistan. It has been funded by the State Government’s Lasting Legacies Program, Maranoa Regional Council and the Muckadilla Community Association Inc. The annual Our Lady of Fatima Rosary was held at the Grotto of Our Lady beside All

Saints Church, Roma. This year former Roma Resident Father Michael O’Brien returned to Roma to assist parishioners while Father Jamie Collins is away on leave.

Members are making progress with their skills. Club rooms are open on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month from 9 am to 4 pm or by arrangements by calling 0429891593. Some of our group have ventured afar, attending the Yowah Opal Festival and Gemfest at Anakie – fossicking and bringing home lots of goodies to work with. We have had quite a few travellers visit our clubhouse. They came from as far away as Cairns to the north and Mt. Gambier to the south. They were impressed with the quality of the display of specimens provided by our members over the years. To the right are samples of Donponoxylon which was a dinosaur food from the Jurassic period about 148 million years ago. These were found just to the north of Roma by a club member.

New body Southern Queensland NRM announced that Mr Paul McDonald would be appointed as the company’s first Chief Executive Officer, effective from October 2, 2018. Southern Queensland NRM was formed on July 1, 2018 and combines the South West NRM, Condamine Alliance and Queensland Murray Darling Committee into one entity. Maranoa residents with an interest in natural resource management will have an opportunity to meet the new CEO and the Board of Directors at the Southern Queensland NRM Annual General Meeting in Roma on October 31.

It has been a big few weeks for the Mitchell Magpies who celebrated their centenary with a reunion on September 29-30, 2018. This was followed up with the annual Football Banquet on October 13, 2018.The Reunion weekend was a great success with Magpies flocking in from across Queensland to gather at the Magpie Nest for a big weekend of reminiscing, tall tales and long overdue catch-ups. The Reunion dinner on Saturday was a highlight of the weekend. Over 400 people gathered to enjoy a beautiful meal and hear entertaining interviews with Magpie greats of different eras including identities such as Ken Lee, Norm Clarke, Bill Anderson, Mark Treasure, Sixer Hanna, Ray Newton, Danny Burke and Ben Ridge - and thats just to name a few! The beer and tall tales flowed well into the night but that didn’t stop the hardier souls from backing up for golf on Sunday and a final club house session watching the NRL Grand Final. Congratulations to the organising committee for a fantastic weekend that

Mitchell and all its Magpies, won’t forget. Having recovered from the Reunion, the current crop of Magpies players celebrated the 2018 season at the Mitchell Hall. A Grade Best and Fairest went to Tom Kennedy while Matthew Newton & Charlie Brumpton were joint winners of the the Daniel Dodd Memorial A Grade Players Player Award. Ian and Carol Newton were the well deserving winners of he Wally Brewer Club Person of the Year award and Darren Dodd won the Peg Hughes Memorial Supporter of the Year award. The night caps off a big year for the Magpies!

The surprise highlight of the Yumba Reunion was the return of 140-year-old artefacts. The Tinney family travelled from Victoria to return three Aboriginal artefacts that had been handed down through their family for 140 years. The artefacts came into the Tinney family when they lived in Mitchell back in the late 1870’s on a property called Foyleview approx. 70km south of Mitchell. During their time there they came in contact with many aboriginals and one of the brothers, Martin Cameron who is an ancestor of John Tinney was given the boomerang, shield and club (nulla nulla), these items were passed down through the family via the oldest son.

Together three generations of the family handed back the artefacts to Gunggari elder Aunty Ethel Munn. The reunion started early on Saturday morning with family, friends, and guests of the Gunggari people

gathered at the gates of Yumba for a very special smoking ceremony and then moved down into Yumba where a heartfelt Welcome to Country was given by Aunty Ethel Munn. The giving back of the artefacts was a very emotional time for many but also a happy and healing time. The day continued with many activities, workshops and stalls within the Healing Circle and flowed into the evening with performances showcasing what had been learnt at the Healing Circle – Dancing, didgeridoo, art, songs etc.

the evening was full of laughter and stories of days gone by. Sunday continued with the Healing Circle and exploring the surrounds with a walk on country.

Mitchell Rotary held their annual Changeover dinner at the Berkley Lodge in September and Gary Birkett was announced as the 2018-2019 President. New member Rob Cornish was warmly welcomed to Rotary as well. Their next community event will be Christmas in the Park held in conjunction with Booringa Action Group on Monday December 3. It will be a great family night with carols, ham wheel, bar and barbecue. Stall holders are encouraged to bring their own tables or get in touch with Rotary or BAG to for more details.

Mitchell residents will have an opportunity to hear author Fran Harding speak about her new book ‘The Accidental Australians’ at the Mitchell Library on Friday November 2, 2018 at 10am. Fran’s book tells the story of Harry and Jimmy Corones, of Charleville’s Corones Hotel fame and promises to be a story thats as big and colourful as Australia itself.

Branch Members had a lovely relaxing social afternoon with the Learn to Crochet session and have planned to hold another one on November 8 at the Amby Hall. The group began making roll-up crocheted

It’s time to frock up for Melbourne Cup parties in Injune and Eumamurrin on November 6. Injune Churches Together will host a luncheon at the Injune Hall commencing at 11am. Tickets are $25 per person and include a glass of champagne, two-course lunch and afternoon tea, with racing on the big screen, raffles, a fashion parade, trivia and entertainment from Injune State School. The Eumamurrin Recreation Association will commence their Melbourne Cup celebrations at 11am at the Eumamurrin Hall. $20 will get you lunch and a complimentary drink, with sweeps and a cash bar in operation throughout the afternoon.

The Injune branch of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services welcomed two new recruits during October. Tara Monteith and Gavin Kerr have completed their training and recently attended their first callout (thanks Deb Duff!). Tara and Gavin join Adan Wilson and Brian McKeesick in the local QFES team with Kasey Nichols currently undergoing training and due to be in the truck next year. The main roles of QFES in Injune are to attend fires and vehicle accidents and new

Our Injune kids have had some outstanding results lately. After winning their division of Opti-MINDS at St George eleven Injune State School students travelled to Brisbane to compete in the state finals at the University of Queensland. They shared their ideas for the future at the 20/20 Vision Youth Forum and completed a three-hour lockdown. Well done team!

The inaugural Men’s Shed Exhibition at the Injune Creek Gallery opened on October 12. Seventeen exhibitors unveiled a wide selection of artwork including woodwork, metal work, jewellery, paintings and scrap art sculpture, and students from Arcadia Valley School presented hand-made birdhouses. The feature item of the exhibition is a recycled brigalow table by Robert Peart. Most pieces are for sale so now is the ideal time to get a unique Christmas gift for loved ones. The exhibition will remain open until November 28. The Injune Men’s Shed is moving closer to their official opening with grants and donations being collated. In the mean-time they have put their skills to use by refurbishing the Dr Ted memorial table at the Injune Hospital. Thanks boys!

Spring has sprung and with it has come the first campdrafts of the season. The Tooloombilla Spring Draft was held on September 29 and 30 with Kylie Hudson, Matthew Brown, Bridget Jamieson, Jaimee Mills, Zoe Cosh, David Bassingthwaighte and Stephen Sheppard among the winners. The event was supported by the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Community Drought Support Package, and thanks go to the Maranoa Regional Council for providing entertainment. Thanks also to all those who donated prizes, our valued cattle donors (the McGilvray family from Womblebank, the Harrison Family from Bungaringa and Hartley Grazing), JB Rose and David and Lauren Keating for trucking, Graham Phillips and Janine Reiser, and David and Terri Phillips for

the delicious roast dinner, Kate Brown for doing the nominations, judges, announcers, time keepers, backyard workers, cooks , kitchen helpers, bar staff, loo cleaners, competitors and all volunteers and to Paula and Brendan for pulling it all together! The annual Pinnacle campdraft was held on property on October 13 and 14, raising money for local charities and also raising awareness of depression, especially in rural men.

Injune residents have until the end of this month (November 30) to nominate a person, group or event in the 2019 Australia Day awards. Categories include: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community

Event of the Year, Cultural Award, Sports Award, Member Contribution Award, Achievement Award and the Andrea Murray Memorial Award. Nomination forms are available from the library or can be downloaded from the Maranoa Regional Council website.

The Benderoo Bulls wrapped up the 2018 season with a Breakup and Award Presentation afternoon at Yuleba State School on Sunday October 7, 2018. Many players, families and supporters were on hand to enjoy the fun and games including the popular tug-o-war tussles. After a BBQ lunch, the eagerly anticipated award presentations got underway.

Vice President Grant Harland hosted the proceedings and Club President Stuart Maunder gave a speech thanking all the parents, volunteers and committee members for their help during the season, as well as acknowledging the ongoing support of the Club sponsors. He made special mention of the players and how well they represented the club throughout the season. The team coaches then presented the Player Awards: U10: Most Improved –Zac Latham Coach’s Award – Marshall Colless Best & Fairest –Hayden York U12: Most Improved –Gregory Neal Coach’s Award – Maddison Murphy Best & Fairest –Bud Williams U14:Most Improved –Tristan York Coach’s Award – Tim Chandler Best & Fairest –Matt York After the player awards were handed out, Grant Harland presented outgoing President Stuart Maunder with an appreciation award, in recognition of his efforts as the inaugural Club President. Grant made special mention of Stuart’s strong representation of the Club at Roma & District level, as well as bringing together the 3 communities to form a harmonious and successful Club. The players and parents thank Stuart for his tireless efforts over the last three years. The players and Committee are looking forward to a strong 2019 season and hope to

see some new players in the mighty Blue, Red and Green jersey. AGM – 3.30pm, Saturday November 3, 2018 at Wallumbilla School Library. All interested parties welcome.

The Festival of Small Halls is a series of tours produced by Woodfordia Inc in partnership with major festivals and local communities across regional Australia. It takes the best folk and contemporary acoustic artists performing at two large festivals and sends them on the road to tiny halls all over Australia. It’s an opportunity for music-lovers from welcoming communities to invite artists from home and abroad into their towns and a way of exploring this vast country in the spirit of hospitality and great fun. The Wallumbilla Town Improvement Group in partnership with Maranoa Regional Council are excited to be hosting a Festival of the Small Halls event in Wallumbilla on 31 October 2018. Festival of Small Halls audiences can expect a beautiful night of original music, as well as a chance to catch up with family and friends during a supper break over cake and tea. It’s an all-ages event and all are welcome. Our artists for this event are Canadian multi-instrumentalist Madison Violet and rising Kimberley star Harry Jakamarra. Another busy year has nearly come to an end for the Bendemere Pony Club. The club has held regular rally days throughout the year with the majority of members attending each one. There are a total of six shields within our

zone. Well done to Claire and Lauren Harland and Keonie Proud for travelling to and participating in every one, as well as other gymkhanas and local shows. Our presentation day is on Sunday November 18, 2018 where we get to celebrate our year and acknowledge rider achievements. The club will hold their AGM early next year where we will plan for another busy year!

There was a great turn out at Wallumbilla to hear Queensland Rugby League great Billy Moore speak as part of Maranoa Regional Council’s organised drought relief program also supported by the State Government. Over 110 people crowded into the Wallumbilla Memorial Hall to hear Billy Moore speak on Rugby League, Life and Challenges. Billy’s presentation was inspirational, telling how he worked through three critical, pivotal moments in his life to overcome hurdles and realise his dreams. He told funny stories about his time in Rugby League with the North Sydney Bears, Queensland and Australia. He told how the chant of ‘QUEENSLANDER’ was born. Billy spoke of his time growing up in the small town of Wallangarra and how impressed he is with the resilience of people in the bush when facing a most difficult drought. Billy talked about his mentors and how we should all ask for help when in doubt and grasp opportunity when it comes your way. The Wallumbilla Town Improvement Group hosted the night and everyone enjoyed a roast dinner and a chance to catch up with neighbours.

Alannah and George Ladbrook hosted the October garden meeting and Alannah told us how her great grandparents had worked the property making their boys the 5th generation on El Dorado. Alannah’s mum was a keen gardener and they’ve benefited from what she planted over the years. Thanks to the trees planted many years ago the garden is now shady. Alannah remembers her mother planting a tree for her brother Warren over forty years ago so some of the trees are absolutely huge. Alannah and George want the garden to be low maintenance so have planted shade loving plants. Her mother grew roses but these days they only have a few. They also have peacocks which can have a detrimental effect on the garden as well as echidnas which dig holes all over the place. The surrounding fence was put up to keep the wallabies out. Their watering system is run by solar power which is is a great saving of time and money. They water a great deal but their garden is their haven and an escape from their other lives. Alannah started a vegie garden but was struggling with it so George took over and its now flourishing. Alannah said how lovely it was to have everyone visit their garden. It is coming out of winter so there were things to be done but everyone is in the same position. President Lynne thanked Alannah for her informative presentation. The raffle winners were Jenny Stinson and Laurel Walters. President Lynne thanked George and Alannah for hosting our club. Everyone enjoyed afternoon tea and a walk around the gardens. The November meeting will be held at the home of Meryl Brumpton. There will be a wire art demonstration at this meeting.

Jackson and Noonga Community Council Meeting The next meeting will be on Monday December 3 at Noonga at 10.00 following morning tea. This will be the final meeting chaired by Brian Sinnamon and minute taking by Fiona Sinnamon. Please consider volunteering for these roles Donation to Cancer Council Following a very successful Seniors Day at Noonga, the

cent auction profits were donated to Fay Bidgood Miles Branch of QLD Cancer Council. A cheque of $484.00 was presented to Fay by Noonga Community Associations Brian Sinnamon. Noonga Achievements Congratulations James Cinnamon on receiving Best & Fairest U19 player for Gatton Pigs Rugby Union Team. James was also elected to the board of Gatton Pigs and is equipment manager. Clancy Sinnamon has taken up his dream job as Video Journalist with Cricket Australia. He left for Dubai on September 19 for 6 weeks while Australia plays Pakistan and

then returns go cover the Australian Summer cricket tests and so on. Payton Leahy qualified 1st place for the under 15 girls South Region JDS and was invited by Tennis Qld to participate in the state finals in October. Cory Leahy finished in 8th position in the under 13’s. Pilates at Noonga Outgoing Treasurer Fiona Cinnamon presented Rowena Gill with a Noonga Mug thanking her for delivering pilates sessions over the past 2.5years. The gentle exercise has been greatly appreciated and sessions in Wandoan and Dulacca will continue. Wandoan Doubles

Championships A contingent of Noonga Tennis players competed at Wandoan on October 6. All played well and did Noonga proud! Barry Sinnamon, Scott Tennyson, Payton Leahy, Bri Speed, Vanessa Tennyson, June Henry, Tracy Holmes, Pen Hindman, Nicky Johansen, Janine Banks, Matt Howse, Brendan Leahy, Cory Leahy and Sam Calum all made it to the winners circle or were runners up at the tournament. Noonga Community Association Meeting The most recent general meeting discussed items

including interim office bearers and dates for future events. Sadly, Brian and Fiona Sinnamon have sold their property and will be moving from the district, leaving the position of Treasurer vacant and Vice President’s role up for grabs at the AGM. Helen Golden was elected interim treasure. Ladies from all around the district gathered in Surat on Sunday October 14 to enjoy the Wives and Girlfriends (WAGS) Shopping Expo. This year’s event was used as an avenue to raise money for Drought Angels. The Expo is a dual celebration of International Rural Women’s Day and a showcase of local and regional women in small business. A large number of stallholders were on hand for ladies to browse with everything from make-up & jewellery to sweet treats and eats. The MC & guest speaker for the day was Australian Survivor 2017 Runner-up, Tara Pitt. Thanks to the support of Maranoa Regional Council, Helen Everingham from The Centre Within was able to join us again to share her life experiences and offer some uplifting advice on how to stay positive in the face of adversity. A luncheon of cold meats and scrumptious salads, supplied by local caterer Wendy McAlpine, met with rave reviews and coffee and cake was supplied by the Surat ECEC. An auction, with some amazing offerings, conducted by the region’s very own Sarah Packer drew the attention of the crowd and raised $940 to be donated to Drought Angels. Our thanks to our generous supporters of this auction – Jack Clanchy & team at Ray White Rural Roma, West Empower Rural Wellness, Leanne Maher, Anything Cowgirl Australia, Donna Hockey, GM Photography & AAM Investment Group. Amanda’s Choice of Roma paraded the latest fashion trends, from casual wear to race wear, much to the delight of those who attended. All of this fun and laughter was captured on camera by Louise Wilson Photography.

The WAGS Expo Committee would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone who played a part in the day. A special thanks to those who donated items to our raffle and to anyone who donated their time and effort in making this day possible. This event was supported by the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Community Drought Support Package. Maranoa Regional Council receive funding from the Queensland Government to provide social events with drought specific information to events within the Maranoa region.

On the morning of Saturday September 29, Council and the Surat community celebrated the completion of the Surat Fisherman Project – a project that has seen life size fisherman sculptures created and fixed onto both of the town’s welcome signs. A Council funded project ($24,000), the sculptures had community support via the Surat & District Development Association, Surat Fishing and Restocking Club, Surat businesses and community members.Councillor Wendy Newman was onsite to celebrate the completion of the project, thanking the Surat community for their support and input into the artwork. “With the Balonne River being such an asset to the town, it is fitting that Surat’s fishing culture is featured on our welcome signs,” Cr Newman said.

“Seeing a project like this that has had such community backing is incredibly special – I’m delighted to see the artwork completed and installed. We hope all those driving into Surat enjoy the new signs.” The artwork for this project was undertaken by NSW based designers and artists Steven Rosewell and Viki Kite from Studio Kite. The fisherman sculptures have been made of ABS plastic and 3d printed on a giant 3d printer CADzilla – the biggest polymer printer in Australia and the fastest in the world of its type!
