New Technology For Diesel Vehicles

Automotive technology is con-stantly changing and here is an-other new twist for 2010 model

diesel owners. While diesels produce high torque at low rpms and have greater driv-ing ranges between fill ups, the new models will require you to make sure that the urea tank has enough liquid in it when you visit a fuel station. What is urea you ask? Urea is the same organic compound found in urine, which has forced drivers to pause for bio-breaks ever since automobiles were invent-ed. This urea is being sold under the market name of “diesel exhaust fluid” or DEF. It is a chemically efficient way to reduce ni-trogen oxide (Nox) emissions produced by diesel engines.

Nox is a major air pollutant that con-tributes to smog, asthma, respiratory and heart diseases. It’s a bi-product of a diesel engine’s high combustion temperatures, which results from high heat levels created by compressing air in the cylinders to the point where it can ignite diesel fuel without using a spark which is unlike the gas en-gine, which uses spark ignition to ignite a gasoline mixture. All on the road 2010, die-sel-powered vehicles have to meet tougher

federal diesel emission standards that will reduce nitrogen oxide levels. The so-called Tier 2 Bin 5 regulations also mandated the use of diesel particulate filters and ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel to cut soot emissions by 90 percent in 2007 from 2006 levels. At 15 parts per million, ULSD contains 97% less sulphur than the 500 parts per million low sulphur diesel that was standard before 2006.

In a condensed version this technology utilizes selective catalytic reduction using diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). The urea-based solution (32.5% industrial urea and 67.5% de-ionized water) is held in a separate stor-

age tank and injected as a fine mist into the hot exhaust gases. The heat turns the urea into ammonia which when combined with a special designed catalytic convertor breaks down the Nox gases into harmless nitro-gen gas and water vapour. There is also an exhaust particulate filter in the system that traps tiny miniscule carbon particles so they are not passed into the atmosphere thus re-ducing pollution. These particulate filters do require periodic maintenance to clean the soot they accumulate. This is done auto-matically on most systems by adding addi-tional fuel and igniting it in the filter to burn it off. While this is happening a vehicle’s exhaust will become extremely hot, hence the need for additional heat shields and guards. These engines also require special low ash content oils to prevent the particu-late filter from restricting exhaust flow. Use of the wrong engine oil will damage these filters which cost upwards of $3,000 each to replace. If the DEF fluid runs low in the tank there will be warning lights come on along with reduced power to let one know it is time to refill the tank. The system will not shut down while driving; however there will be a no start condition if the engine is turned off when the tank is empty. So carry-ing a 4 litre bottle of fluid might be a good idea until DEF becomes available at every fuel station across the country.

As with any new technology there will be a certain amount of quirks that will need to be worked out as these vehicleS age, but manufactures assure us that there will be extended warranties on these vehicles and that we are not to worry. Will they be the answer to the reduction of diesel emissions? Only time will tell.

It was a 200% return investmentDale and Noreen Taylor know who

the best driver in their house is: It’s their son Preston!

After attaining his driver’s license under the instruction of Paul Coombe and The Fergus-Elora Driving School, Dale and Noreen have only positive comments about their experience with Centre Wellington’s premier driving school.

“He’s a better driver than Noreen and I,” says Dale. “He is extremely well prepared for driving in the real world. Enrolling my son in the Fergus-Elora Driving School was a 200% return on my investment.”

Dale says he’s “very impressed” with how conscientious Preston is about obeying the rules of the road. When it’s time for Preston’s brother to take driving lessons, Dale knows where he will send him - The Fergus-Elora Driving School.

As many Centre Wellington residents have found out, Paul is passionate about driver

training. That’s evident in the success rate of students like Preston who have, on average a 95 per cent road-test success rate on their first try.

One of the reasons for the success of the their program is the one-on-one in-car instruction owner Paul Coombe and his other instructor Shawn, give every student. They’ve earned their reputation as not only the best trained and

most experienced instructors, which translates into superior results for their students, but also as the most patient and caring instructors for new drivers who need that type of approach in order to gain confidence on the road.

Pain during normal walking andPedorthic treatment

One of the best ways to stay in shape and keep the weight off during the spring and summer is going for an

evening walk. If ten to twenty minutes into the walk, pain is experienced in the lower limb we may head right back home and cut the walk short. We may experience foot pain in the heel (fasciitis) or ball of the foot, shin splints, knee pain or hip pain.

The average person walks, depending on activity levels up to 15000 steps a day! At heel strike, forces greater then the weight of the body are transferred throughout the bone structure of the lower limb. After heel strike a complex series of movements occur

to allow us to walk. If pain occurs anywhere along the “closed kinetic chain” of the body, the compensation in walking affects every other part along that chain. For example, a

foot movement called pronation is associated with internal rotation of the leg. Excessive pronation may cause foot, leg, knee or hip pain due

to changes in bone position and soft tissue strain. Orthotic foot support and footwear are designed to control pronation.

Custom-made prescription orthoses and footwear are available at Fit toWalk at 135 St. David St S. at “The Olde Livery”. Clinical evaluation, casting, manufacturing and fittings are all performed at our on-site lab. Call Bob Witte, your local Certified Pedorthist at 843-7979 for flexible appointment hours and a no-obligation consultation. Services are recognized by major insurance providers. Looking Beyond Mortgage RatesIt’s easy to get caught up in the idea that

comparing mortgage rates will guar-antee you get the best bang for your

mortgage buck. While this may be true for particular situations, there are many scenarios where this strategy is not effective. Following are three reasons why it doesn’t always pay to make a decision based solely on rates.

Reason #1Your long-term plan and risk tolerance

should determine which mortgage product is right for you. This product may or may not have the lowest rate.

For instance, there are cases where lenders will offer lower rates for insured mortgages. With insured mortgages, however, you’re charged an insurance premium, which is usu-ally added to the mortgage amount. But if you’re not planning on keeping the property for a long enough time to offset that cost, it may be better to take an uninsured mortgage with a slightly higher rate. The cost difference you will pay with the higher interest rate may still be less than what you may pay in insur-ance premiums.

As another example, if you prefer to bud-get for a consistent payment and can’t handle rate fluctuations, it may be better to go with a higher fixed-rate mortgage. If you think cur-rent rates are low enough and you will be liv-ing in your property for at least five years, it may be wise to also opt for a mortgage with a longer term.

Reason #2 One of the biggest mistakes people make

when merely comparing mortgage rates is failing to consider important factors such as prepayment options to help pay off the mort-gage faster, whether secondary financing op-tions are allowed, early payout penalties, or what fees are involved.

It’s not enough to simply compare mort-gage rates because you have to know what “clauses” are contained within the mortgage deal. There may be cases where you will find a lender with the lowest rate and willing to pay for your closing costs, or even provide you

with cash-backs after closing.

Reason #3Lenders can

change their rates at any time. As such, if you’re shopping for rates with one lender and then approach another that gives you a lower rate, it’s quite possible that the first lend-

er has also dropped its rates. This is why it’s

important to get pre-approved with a lender once you find a mortgage that fits your needs. In some cases, you can secure your rate and conditions for up to 120 days.

These are just three reasons why it’s not enough to merely compare mortgage rates. The mortgage rate you may qualify for is also highly dependent on your credit score among other things. In order to get the best mortgage deals, you need to have solid credit.

If you would like to discuss these mortgage issues in more detail, call Roger Hicks, Mort-gage Agent at Dominion Lending Centres, at 519-546-3772, or email him at [email protected].

I Can Hear So Much Better Now thanks to Ward Hearing Centre

Web Charette was frustrated with his hearing aids. He was ex-periencing poor sound quality

and his hearing aids would cut out randomly making every-day conversation difficult. He decided to consult Brian Ward at Ward Hear-ing Centre.

“Brian advised me to have them cleaned at least once a month in his office,” says Web. “Since then, my hearing aids are 100% bet-ter!”

Thanks to Brian’s advice and expertise, Web’s hearing aids are functioning properly and he can now enjoy clear, reliable sound.

“The difference between having my hearing aids cleaned regularly by Brian and not hav-ing that done is unbelievable,” Web says.

During your complementary hearing aid cleaning appointment, Brian will thoroughly check your hearing aid’s functionality to en-sure everything is working properly. With the

help of specialized tools and machines, he will examine your ear canals with the help of his video-otoscope to check for excessive wax build-up. This is displayed on a large TV screen (pictured) that both you and Brian are able to see. Brian can properly remove wax and moisture from your hearing aid and ear canal to improve your ability to hear & pre-

vent future wax issues. It’s this combination of the latest hearing

aid technology and high-quality products, along with friendly small-town service, that gives Ward Hearing Centre an edge.

Don’t forget, this month you can receive $200 Off a Pair of Hearing Aids from now un-til the end of June at Ward Hearing Centre.

May is Better Hearing & Speech Month! Be sure to drop by and see Brian for friendly, knowledgeable and personalized service in a calm, unhurried atmosphere.

Complementary home visits are avail-able for clients who have difficulty getting to Brian’s office. Evening and weekend ap-pointments available. For more information, call (519) 843-4327. 50% less salt and 80% less waterAs I have written in the past, most

softeners operate the same way and it’s based on the demand

principle. What makes one softener differ-ent from another is the amount of water and salt used during the regeneration of the softener.

Aquamaster Water Softeners save oper-ating expenses by using up to 50% less salt and up to 80% less water per regeneration than conventional softeners. Aquamas-ter is the only appliance with a separate, built-in, whole-house, self-cleaning dirt and sediment filter. It operates on 12-volts

while other softeners use at least 24 volts. The Aquamaster can regenerate in as little as 15 minutes while conventional soften-ers can take nearly two hours. Aquamaster has a packed resin bed and a larger reserve capacity aiding in regeneration with clean, soft water.

So when it’s time to replace your soften-er give us a call at Aquarius Water Treat-ment in Elora @ 519-846-9090 or drop by the store @ 195 Geddes street.

Imagine if you could dramatically transform your landscape in one day ... and have a design unlike anybody

else’s. The Garden’s Edge offers you an attractive, long lasting, low maintenance landscape edging that will increase your

property value and the curbside appeal of your home. The curbing is poured in place, following the contours of your garden. Choose from a variety of profiles, patterns and colours to complement your home or your existing landscape. We do the prep work and clean up - no fuss, no muss!

Maintenance is a breeze! Concrete

edging won’t rot like wood or heave like stones. It won’t lift out of the ground like plastic or metal edging. And it’s not toxic like railway ties or pressure treated wood. The colour is integral so chips won’t be noticeable. And it provides a very effec-tive control for lawn grass since it’s heavy and puts a 6” barrier between the lawn and your garden. Being continuous, there are

no cracks for grass to creep through. And, you can run your mower right over the front edge of the curb, so trimming time is minimized.

We also install walkways and steps in the same colour options as the decorative curb-ing. Or you may want to consider drive-way edging. Whether you have asphalt or interlocking stone, keeping grass out is a must. Ask us, too, about retaining walls and interlocking stone (pavers). Call for a free estimate.

Pets do more than bring our slippersWhat do we really want? Seems to

be we concentrate very hard on the stuff we purchase, the money

we make. . .Yet why is it that so many of us light up when we talk about how our animals greet us when we come home, or the crazy moves they come up with when playing? Why do we respond so well to a dog’s request for a pet, or a cat’s demand for a back scratch? It seems we are more about relationships and attention than we realize.

The human animal bond is at the heart of this. Sounds rather clinical and impersonal. We often prefer to call it the human pet bond - sounds more squishy and warm. Cause it really is squishy and warm. The bond is a dynamic relationship. Both the companion animal and the person benefit - there are both psychologi-cal and physiological benefits. Pets do more than bring our slippers or scrounge treats from us. Animals help us lower our blood pressure. They help us reduce our anxiety and help us maintain a feeling of well being. Children learn how it feels to care for another living being, and improve their responsibility levels along with their feelings of self worth. The therapeutic effect of animals on persons liv-ing in nursing homes, hospitals and hospices is well documented. People are often noted to

appear more happy and healthy when in the presence of animals.

So what do our animals get out of this? They too benefit from the bond “I am posi-tive that my cats ask to go in and out 1700 times a day because they think it’s a fun game. Or maybe they just

want me to get a little more exercise, and I am positive that my dog thinks it is a hoot to bark at me when I am on the phone. Or maybe she read that article about cell phones and cancer. Regardless of the motivation, we do seem to provide some fun for our companion animals. We also provide these little (and sometimes big) fur balls with a safe environment. We protect them from the elements and predators (like cars!). We provide a sometimes too reli-able source of nutrition. We also look after the health of our companions.

Our companion animals have the benefit of annual physical examinations, appropri-

ate vaccinations, parasite control and dental care. All of these things are having the effect of allowing our pets to live longer, healthier lives, just as our health care regimens do for us. In fact preventive care, or wellness care, has been shown to slow the onset of disease and reduce the severity of disease in humans. Wellness care is the buzzword in human med-icine - which, it seems, has just caught up with veterinary medicine! Most of what happens in a veterinary hospital is geared towards main-taining health! A wellness exam will allow your veterinarian to make recommendations about ways to reduce the incidence of disease in our pets, as well as give you the opportunity to take advantage of diagnostic testing such as blood work, which will help evaluate your pets’ health on the inside!

This time of year is a great opportunity to remember the health of the little furry beastie who makes you laugh and lowers your blood pressure! Bring them in for a ‘tune up’ so that they can enjoy the summer with you! We are happy to announce that we are now accept-ing new patients for Dr. Kayte Armstrong, Dr. Roxane Pardiac and Dr. Danielle Jongkind. Please contact the Arthur Veterinary Clinic at 519-848-2536 to reserve your appointment.

Is Homeopathy safe for babies? Ah, spring! A time of new growth

- daffodils, tree buds - and ba-bies!. So fragile, yet so full of

promise. Can homeopathy be safely used to help them reach their potential? You bet! As a pig farmer, I used remedies through all stages of a piglet’s life - including newborn. Because the remedies are dilute there are no toxic or allergic side-effects. It’s a gentle, subtle aid to healthy development.

The ABC’s of children’s remedies are: Aconite (for intense fear), Belladonna (for intense fever) and Chamomilla (for intense pain).

Aconite is a remedy everyone should have in their first aid kits (even if you don’t have children). It relieves the effects of a sud-den shock or trauma; it alleviates intense fears such as fear of the dentist or doctor; it treats flus or colds where the symptoms are intense and come on very suddenly (usually after exposure to a dry, cold wind), and for children it can treat both night terrors and the initial stage of croup (where there’s in-tense fear of suffocation). The Aconite pa-tient will usually exhibit extreme restless-ness with sleeplessness.

Belladonna 6C is a must for every new

parent. Any time a child’s fever reaches too high, a dose of Belladonna will regulate it. It won’t take away the fever - that would be counter-productive. A certain temperature is required to discourage the proliferation of the offending virus, but anything in excess is unhelpful! The Belladonna patient often has pronounced swelling of the glands with hot, red, dry cheeks and glazed eyes, with an unexpected lack of thirst. The remedy is also well-known for treating spasms or convulsions, so it can help prevent the com-plication of meningitis.

There’s a special time in a child’s life when Chamomilla is indispensable. It’s called teething. A typical Chamomilla pa-

tient has intense pain when teething, often has colicky diarrhea accompanied by a hot, red cheek (usually only one side) and can-not be comforted. They want to be picked up, but then they squirm and whine until they are set down again. They are very distressed, but don’t know what they need to feel better. The only thing that seems to help is a good sleep (which is often hard to come by). A dose of Chamomilla can ease the pain and bring a soothing sleep. It calms the child’s irritability and quickly re-turns his/her good nature.

Note that for most acute remedies, a 30C potency is used, so that it can be repeated several times each day, as needed. For an acute fever, however, Belladonna 6C is preferable since you may need to repeat it much more often. In general, the lower the potency number, the faster the remedy gets used up.

How to Foil a ThiefThere is a stealthy thief robbing you of

your energy and focus, stealing your ability to relax or even sleep. Feeling

stressed happens so frequently it may feel like there is no other way; that it is beyond your control. The good news is that it is possible to stop this bandit in its tracks. There is a way for you to take your control back.

We stress about the big things: economy; job security; divorce. We stress about the little things: being late for work; unexpected car repairs; the holiday season; public speaking. All can have a detrimental effect on a person: worn out, overwhelmed, unwell, stressed out.

Regardless of the causes, big or small, the resulting flood of chemicals in the body has the same negative effects. Left unchecked, it has been linked to serious illnesses such as heart disease and strokes. In fact it is estimated that ninety per cent of visits to physicians are the result of stress-related symptoms.

The release of these chemicals, such as adrenaline and cortisol, into our systems is a natural part of our genetics. It is part of the ‘fight or flight’ response, a state of increased arousal which is triggered by stressful situations. In ancient man this could have meant attack by enemies or wild beasts and was necessary to provide the strength and energy to fight off the threat or to escape. The changes to the body caused by these chemicals include

an increase in heart rate (to flood the muscles and brain with blood), faster breathing (again, to provide fuel for the muscles and brain), increased alertness and heightened senses. The increase of blood flow to the muscles and brain however, causes a decrease in blood flow to the vital organs such as kidneys, liver and the gastro-intestinal system. The counter part to the ‘fight or flight’ response is supposed to occur when the threat is no longer apparent. During this counter response the body flushes the arousal chemicals from the system and returns to normal relaxed functioning. The causes of stress for most people in the modern

world, however, leave little room for either fighting or running away, however appealing these responses might seem at the time. This and the chronic nature of modern stress cause the chemicals and the resulting state of arousal to last well beyond what is healthy.

Since we cannot stop the world to get off, it is essential that we learn how to manage the stress in our lives. Hypnosis is a fast and effective method of stress reduction and management. Through hypnosis, we can turn around the fight or flight response and lower the level of adrenaline and cortisol coursing through our system. This relaxation response leaves us feeling calm, relaxed and healthy and allows the proper conditions for the optimum functioning of the organs - essential for good mental and physical health. You can easily learn how to manage your response to stressors in your life with hypnosis. You can develop a new habit pattern that will increase your energy and focus, help you to adapt to change more readily and will permit you to relax more easily. From this new perspective we are better able to focus our attention where it is most beneficial in our lives. Call Kelly Muth at 519-846-1454 to book an

Your Stomach Trouble SolutionIndigestion or dyspepsia is a frequent

complaint among people of all ages. However, indigestion should not

be tolerated simply because it is common. On the other hand, digestive distress is a sign that the intestines are not functioning properly. And, people with dyspepsia are at an increased risk of gastric cancer (Scand J Gastroenterol 1997; 32(8):751-4).

Many people with indigestion report that chiropractic care alleviates their stomach problems. Scientific evidence also supports these reports. For example, one Australian study found an association between indigestion and mid-back pain. Investigators examined data on 1,494 chiropractic patients. A whopping 46% experienced both indigestion and mid-back pain. And, 36% noted that both symptoms tended to occur at the same time. What’s more, 22% of subjects with indigestion said that chiropractic adjustments provided relief (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1996 June; 19(5): 317-23).

How does chiropractic care lessen stomach complaints? And what’s the connection between back pain and indigestion? Chiropractors uphold that the body works as a whole, rather than as isolated parts. Consequently, conditions like spinal misalignments (areas in the spine where movement is restricted or bones are out of alignment) may upset the balance of the body, boost stress levels and lead to other health concerns.

The science of chiropractic upholds, that the causes of patients’ complaints must be addressed, not just their symptoms. So,

if you have indigestion, the chiropractor will work to unearth the source of your disorder. For instance, the chiropractor will investigate the links between your indigestion and other, seemingly unrelated symptoms, like low-back pain. Many traditional doctors may overlook links between symptoms like these, but the links are often the key to alleviating your discomfort. This unique and powerful outlook on patient care helps chiropractic patients achieve optimal health.

Another way you can speed your recovery is by examining your lifestyle for possible sources of digestive distress. Once you identify any aggravating factors, commit to eliminating them.

Common causes of indigestion may include many drugs including some promoted as stomach soothers. Stress or anxiety may be prominent features of stomach problems. Diet can often give rise to indigestion. The most common offenders are spicy foods, meats, soy products, diary products, fried foods, alcohol and caffeine. Smoking cigarettes not only harms your heart and lungs, but it may also damage your digestive tract.

In treating indigestion many people now look to natural ways, which are safer and possibly more effective than drugs. However, the focus of most natural remedies is still

addressing the symptom not the cause of the digestive problem. Chiropractic works to identify the source of the condition, which may end your complaint for good. So don’t wait to take charge of your well being, empower yourself by making an appointment for a chiropractic check-up.

Window film can protect yourvehicle’s interior

Window tinting from Cotton’s Auto Care in Arthur is one of the best ways to enhance the

look of your vehicle. The film reduces energy costs, glare reduction and protects your upholstery from fading.

Did you know that inside a vehicle can exceed 120 degrees in only minutes during the summer? Window film can protect your vehicle’s interior by filtering out most of the sun’s rays; your air conditioner won’t have to work as hard. You’ll save fuel and help extend the life of the air conditioning system. With maximum ultraviolet rejec-tion, you will immediately see and feel the difference once the window film is applied

to you car. Automotive

film is available in different shades, so it doesn’t need to be dark, to en-joy the benefits says Lisa Cotton. Even in the event of an accident, our window film’s

sturdy construction can help hold shat-tered glass in place reducing injuries from flying glass.

We use only high-performance film with a life-time warranty, so there’s no bubbling and its colour stable, meaning it won’t turn purple.

You’ve invested a lot in your transporta-tion. Now give it the finishing touch. Beat the heat this summer. Call Cotton’s Auto Care in Arthur 519 848-3515.

Use Low Rate Spousal Loanfor Tax Savings

Every three months the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency an-nounces what is referred to as the

“prescribed interest rate”. The rate is im-portant because it serves as the base they use when calculating interest they pay on tax refunds (prescribed rate plus 2%) or the amount they charge on taxes you owe them, (prescribed rate plus 4%). While these are the main uses, the prescribed in-terest rate is also a factor when a husband and wife are trying to avoid the attribution rules. When one spouse pays tax at a higher

rate than the other there is an incentive to move or transfer investment accounts from the high tax rate spouse to the low tax rate spouse. In such a case, the attribu-tion rules require the high tax rate spouse to report the income even if the investment is in the name of the low tax rate spouse. One exception to this rule is when the

high tax rate spouse transfers money to the low tax rate spouse and accepts an interest bearing note in exchange. As long as the

prescribed interest rate is paid on this note each year, then the low tax rate spouse can report all of the income from the invest-ment and can deduct the interest paid. The high tax rate spouse only reports the inter-est received. For the 2nd quarter of 2010 the prescribed rate has been set at 1%.

There already have been indications of in-terest rates moving higher so this may be the last time we see the prescribed rate so low. However, if a properly documented and structured loan is made before the end of June you can lock in the 1% rate for as long as the loan is outstanding and any investment return over 1% would be taxed at a lower rate. This planning can also be done using a family trust but make sure you get proper advice.

This product has been around in Great Britian and the United States for a few years and talked

about in Canada for about 5 years and now it’s available to all Canadians 18 years of age and older. Unlike a number of initi-tives the goverment has come up with, this one has no draw backs and is really suit-able for everyone.

Here is how it works. To open an account you have to follow

the usual and now updated application re-quirements with identification and contact information. You can direct the invest-ment into any number of products, daily high interest account, GICs, mutual funds, stocks and more. Each investment type has a different Risk Profile, so you will need to know your Time Horizon for investing be-fore selecting the type.

The accounts, unlike RRSPs do not give you any income tax relief (tax refund), however, when/if you ever go to cash-in part or all of the investment you will not have to pay any form of income tax - ever! I know in the first year it might not amount to much, but imagine if you were to save the Maximum annually $5,000 for 5 years

and, say, you like the GIC rates that are currently 3.75% (April 10, 2009 Source Manulife Financial). Your account would be worth $27,535.69 representing $2,535.69 in interest growth that is 100% NOT tax-able.

Depending on the investment type you chose, you can take the money out when-ever you like and, as stated above, without any tax applicable. The amount that you withdraw is then accumulated and can be put in whenever you like, over and above

the future years deposits. As with any investment you should

speak with your investment professional to determine what the best type of invest-ment for you would be. We would be happy to have that conversation with you at any time and of course without obligation.

EFG has been operating since 1990 right here in the heart of Fergus ( Centre Wel-lington).

With its rolling terrain and picturesque holes in and around Guelph Lake, designer archi-tect David Moote successfully designed this championship length course by mak-ing full use of the land’s natural assets. He preserved the environmentally sensi-tive area that bisect the course to give it a mature look. And, there are 4 tee decks on each hole which makes the course en-joyable to players of every calibre. Last year, a secondary chipping area around

all greens was added to allow for a more player-friendly course. The club will also continue their family night this year. Tues-day after 4 pm, juniors can play free when accommpanied by an adult.

The course has come a long way since it opened in the summer of ‘98. Course man-ager Jim Farrelly, a life-long resident of Guelph, along with his staff have worked

hard to keep the course in such good con-dition. When it originally opened, the greens were already in excellent shape at the time and since then, the greens have quickly matured well.

Guelph Lakes offers golfers the chance to hone their skills on the practice areas equipped with target greens at various distances, while side bunkers give golfers the chance to practice their sand play. A 5,000-square-foot putting green was also recently added. Some other amenities in-clude: a clubhouse, dining facilities, pro shop, tee time reservations, club rental and lessons available.

Guelph Lakes is located on Highway 124 (formerly 24) northeast of Guelph. It is most visible west of the Jones Baseline area from the Guelph Lake Conservation Area. To book your tee time at this mar-velous course, contact the staff at Guelph Lakes Golf and Country Club by calling 519-822-4222. For more information, visit www.guelphlakesgolf.ca.
