Introduction to Micah

Micah penned his eloquentprophecies in the periodleading up to the destructionof Israel’s northern kingdomby the Assyrians, around 722BCE. The Lord’s demands –fairness and mercy – aresimple, yet Israel’s corruptionis such that even the simplestcommands are rejected. As aresult, God’s fierce judgmentis coming soon against theprophet’s own people.

Nevertheless, the promise of abrighter day endures. Oncethe Lord’s people have learnedthe lesson of repentance,God’s blessing will return. The book contains one of themost famous verses in theBible – Micah 6:8 – whichtakes on a slightly differentflavor in the Latin.

The Lord’s word, which wasmade toward Micah theMorasthite, during the daysof Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah,Judah’s kings, which he sawconcerning Samaria andJerusalem.

1:2 audite populi omnes etadtendat terra et plenitudoeius et sit Dominus Deusvobis in testem Dominus detemplo sancto suo

Hear, all peoples, and payattention, land and its plenty! And may the Lord God bewith you as witness, the Lord,from His holy place!

1:3 quia ecce Dominusegreditur de loco suo etdescendet et calcabit superexcelsa terrae

For look, the Lord goes outfrom His place. He willclimb down and trample overthe land’s highest places.

1:4 et consumentur montessubtus eum et vallesscindentur sicut cera a facieignis sicut aquae quaedecurrunt in praeceps

And mountains will beconsumed beneath Him. Andvalleys will be torn like waxbefore fire’s face, like waterswhich will run headlong!

All this is for Jacob’s crime,and for Israel’s house’s sins.What is Jacob’s crime? Is itnot Samaria? And what areJudah’s high places? Arethey not Jerusalem?

1:6 et ponam Samariam

And I will make Samaria likea pile of stones in a field,where vines are planted. AndI will pull its stones downinto the valley, and willuncover its foundations.

The chariots’ tumult hasstunned Lachish’s3

inhabitants. It is sin’sbeginning to Sion’s daughter,because Israel’s crimes arefound in you!

1:14 propterea dabitemissarios super hereditatemGeth domus Mendacii indeceptionem regibus Israhel

Because of this, I will sendemissaries over Gath’sinheritance, a house of Lies,to deceive Israel’s kings.

1:15 adhuc heredemadducam tibi quae habitas inMaresa usque Adollam venietgloria Israhel

Yet I will lead the heir to youwho live in Maresheth.

Sprinkling oneself with dust is a2

sign of grief in many societies.

Lachish was a fortress city in3

Judah.

Make yourself bald and shearyour hair over your darlingchildren! Widen yourbaldness like an eagle,because they are led captiveaway from you!

Woe to you who plotuselessly and work harm inyour beds. In morning’s lightthey will do it, because theirhand is against God.

2:2 et concupierunt agros etviolenter tulerunt et domosrapuerunt et calumniabanturvirum et domum eius virum ethereditatem eius

And they lusted after fieldsand took them violently. Andthey plundered houses andoppressed a man and hishouse, a man and hisinheritance.

2:3 idcirco haec dicitDominus ecce ego cogitosuper familiam istam malumunde non auferetis collavestra et non ambulabitissuperbi quoniam tempuspessimum est


Therefore, the Lord says this:Look, I plot harm over thatfamily, harm you will nottake your necks away from. And you will not walkproudly, because the time isdismal.

On that day, a parable will bemeasured over you, and asong will be sung withsoftness, by those saying,‘We are devastated byplundering!’

My people’s portion ischanged! How he will pullaway from Me, when the onewho will divide our regionsreturns!

2:5 propter hoc non erit tibimittens funiculum sortis in

coetu Domini

Because of this, there willnot be for you one casting thelots’ line in the Lord’sgathering.4

2:6 ne loquamini loquentesnon stillabit super istos nonconprehendet confusio

Do not speak, saying, ‘It willnot drop down over them. Confusion will not capturethem.’

2:7 dicit domus Iacobnumquid adbreviatus estspiritus Domini aut tales suntcogitationes eius nonneverba mea bona sunt cum eoqui recte graditur

Jacob’s house says, ‘Isn’t theLord’s Spirit shortened, oraren’t His thoughts such?’

Aren’t My words good to onewho lives rightly?

This refers to the officially-4

sanctioned method of divination, established

in the Torah. See Numbers 27:21.


2:8 et e contrario populusmeus in adversariumconsurrexit desuper tunicapallium sustulistis eos quitransiebant simpliciterconvertistis in bellum

And it has risen up againstMy people as an enemy. Youhave taken away the cloakover the shirt. Those whomerely passed by you haveturned back in war.

2:9 mulieres populi meieiecistis de domo deliciarumsuarum a parvulis earumtulistis laudem meam inperpetuum

You have thrown Mypeople’s women out of thehouse they loved. You havetaken My praise away fromtheir little ones forever.

2:10 surgite et ite quia nonhabetis hic requiem propterinmunditiam eiuscorrumpetur putredinepessima

Get up and go, because you

will not have peace here! Because of its uncleanness, itwill be corrupted by a dismalrot.

2:11 utinam non essem virhabens spiritum etmendacium potius loquererstillabo tibi in vinum et inebrietatem et erit super quemstillatur populus iste

If only I were not a manhaving a spirit, but rather onespeaking lies! I will dripdown over you in wine and indrunkenness. And it will bethat people over whom itdrops!

2:12 congregationecongregabo Iacob totum te inunum conducam reliquiasIsrahel pariter ponam illumquasi gregem in ovili quasipecus in medio caularumtumultuabuntur a multitudinehominum

Gathering together, I willgather you, all of Jacob, asone. I will lead Israel’ssurvivors together. I will


place them like a flock in asheepfold, like cattle in thepen’s midst. They will betroubled by a multitude ofmen.

2:13 ascendet enim pandensiter ante eos divident ettransibunt portam etegredientur per eam ettransibit rex eorum coram eiset Dominus in capite eorum

For He will rise up, openingup the road before them. They will divide and passthrough the gate, and go outby it. And their king willpass over before them, andthe Lord will be at their head.

And I said, ‘Listen, Jacob’sprinces, and leaders ofIsrael’s house. Isn’tjudgment yours to know –

3:2 qui odio habetis bonumet diligitis malum quiviolenter tollitis pelles eorumdesuper eos et carnem eorumdesuper ossibus eorum

you, who have hatred forgood and delight in harm,who violently rip their skinsoff of them, and their fleshoff of their bones –

who have eaten My people’sflesh and stripped away theirskin from above? And youhave broken their bones and


chopped them up like in acauldron, and like meat in themiddle of a pot?’

3:4 tunc clamabunt adDominum et non exaudiet eoset abscondet faciem suam abeis in tempore illo sicutnequiter egerunt inadinventionibus suis

Then they will cry out to theLord and He will not hearthem! And He will hide Hisface from them at that time,like they have lived wickedlyin their inventions.’

3:5 haec dicit Dominussuper prophetas qui seducuntpopulum meum qui mordentdentibus suis et praedicantpacem et si quis non dederitin ore eorum quippiamsanctificant super eumproelium

The Lord says this overprophets who seduce Mypeople, who bite with theirteeth and preach peace. Andif someone does not putsomething in their mouth,

they sanctify battle againsthim.

3:6 propterea nox vobis provisione erit et tenebrae vobispro divinatione et occumbetsol super prophetas etobtenebrabitur super eos dies

Therefore, night will be foryou instead of vision, andshadows for you in place ofdivination. And the sun willset over prophets. And daywill become night over them.

3:7 et confundentur quivident visiones etconfundentur divini etoperient vultus suos omnesquia non est responsum Dei

And those who see visionswill be dismayed. Anddiviners will be dismayed. And all will cover their faces,because there is no responsefrom God.

3:8 verumtamen ego repletussum fortitudine spiritusDomini iudicio et virtute utadnuntiem Iacob scelus suum


et Israhel peccatum suum

Nevertheless, I am full of theLord’s Spirit’s strength, withjudgment and might, so I maytell Jacob his crime, andIsrael his sin.

3:9 audite haec principesdomus Iacob et iudicesdomus Israhel quiabominamini iudicium etomnia recta pervertitis

Hear this, princes of Jacob’shouse and judges of Israel’shouse, who abhor judgmentand pervert all right actions –

3:10 qui aedificatis Sion insanguinibus et Hierusalem ininiquitate

who build Sion by blood andJerusalem by treachery!

3:11 principes eius inmuneribus iudicabant etsacerdotes eius in mercededocebant et prophetae eius inpecunia divinabant et superDominum requiescebantdicentes numquid non

Dominus in medio nostrumnon venient super nos mala

Its princes have judged bybribes, and its priests havetaught for pay, and itsprophets have foretold formoney. Yet they kept quietconcerning the Lord, saying,‘Isn’t the Lord among us? Harms will not come overus.’

3:12 propter hoc causavestri Sion quasi agerarabitur et Hierusalem quasiacervus lapidum erit et monstempli in excelsa silvarum

For this reason, your Sionwill be plowed like a field,and Jerusalem will be like asharpened stone, and thetemple mount like theforests’ high places.


Micah 4:1 et in novissimodierum erit mons domusDomini praeparatus invertice montium et sublimissuper colles et fluent ad eumpopuli

And in the days’ end, theLord’s house’s mountain willbe prepared in the mountains’ height, and liftedup over hills. And nationswill flow to it.

4:2 et properabunt gentesmultae et dicent veniteascendamus ad montemDomini et ad domum DeiIacob et docebit nos de viissuis et ibimus in semitis eiusquia de Sion egredietur lex etverbum Domini deHierusalem

And many peoples will hurryand will say, ‘Come, let us goup to the Lord’s mountain,and to Jacob’s God’s house. And He will teach us aboutHis ways, and we will go inHis paths.’

For law will go out from

Sion, and the Lord’s wordfrom Jerusalem.

4:3 et iudicabit inter populosmultos et corripiet gentesfortes usque in longinquum etconcident gladios suos invomeres et hastas suas inligones non sumet gensadversus gentem gladium etnon discent ultra belligerare

And He will judge betweenmany peoples, and willrebuke mighty nations, evenfrom far away. And they willchop up their swords intoplows and their lances intohoes. Nation will not lift upsword against nation, andthey will no longer learn tomake war.

4:4 et sedebit vir subtusvineam suam et subtus ficumsuam et non erit qui deterreatquia os Domini exercituumlocutum est

And man will sit under hisown vine, and under his ownfig tree. And there will be noone who discourages, for the


mouth of the Lord of armieshas spoken.

4:5 quia omnes populiambulabunt unusquisque innomine dei sui nos autemambulabimus in nomineDomini Dei nostri inaeternum et ultra

For all peoples will walk,each one in its god’s name. But we will walk in the Lordour God’s name, in eternityand beyond.

4:6 in die illa dicit Dominuscongregabo claudicantem eteam quam eieceram colligamet quam adflixeram

In that day, the Lord says, Iwill gather the lame. And Iwill gather her whom I hadthrown out, and whom I hadafflicted.

4:7 et ponam claudicantemin reliquias et eam quaelaboraverat in gentemrobustam et regnabitDominus super eos in monteSion ex hoc nunc et usque in

aeternum

And I will place the lameamong the survivors, and herwho labored among a robustnation. And the Lord willreign over them on MountSion, from this moment nowand even in eternity.

4:8 et tu turris Gregisnebulosa filiae Sion usque adte veniet et veniet potestasprima regnum filiaeHierusalem

And you – the Flocks’ tower,Sion’s obscure daughter – itwill come even to you. Andthe kingdom’s foremostpower will come toJerusalem’s daughter.

4:9 nunc quare maerorecontraheris numquid rex nonest tibi aut consiliarius tuusperiit quia conprehendit tedolor sicut parturientem

Now, why are you depressedby grief? Is the king not withyou, or has your counselorperished, because pain


overtakes you like one givingbirth?

4:10 dole et satage filia Sionquasi parturiens quia nuncegredieris de civitate ethabitabis in regione et veniesusque ad Babylonem ibiliberaberis ibi redimet teDominus de manuinimicorum tuorum

Suffer and be hard-pressed,Sion’s daughter, like onegiving birth, because nowyou will go out from the cityand will live in the region! And you will come even toBabylon. There you will befreed. There the Lord willbuy you back from yourenemies’ hands.

4:11 et nunc congregataesunt super te gentes multaequae dicunt lapidetur etaspiciat in Sion oculus noster

And now many nations aregathered together againstyou, who say, ‘Let it bestoned, and let our eye stareat Sion!’

4:12 ipsi autem noncognoverunt cogitationesDomini et non intellexeruntconsilium eius quiacongregavit eos quasifaenum areae

But they have not known theLord’s thoughts, and have notunderstood His counsel,because He has gatheredthem like the threshingfloor’s hay.

4:13 surge et tritura filiaSion quia cornu tuum ponamferreum et ungulas tuasponam aereas et comminuespopulos multos et interficiamDomino rapinas eorum etfortitudinem eorum Dominouniversae terrae

Get up and thresh, Sion’sdaughter, because I willmake your horn iron, and willmake your hooves bronze! And you will break manypeoples. And I will kill theirplunder by the Lord, and theirstrength by the Lord of all theland!


Micah 5:1 nunc vastaberisfilia latronis obsidionemposuerunt super nos in virgapercutient maxillam iudicisIsrahel

Now you will be laid waste,O bandit’s daughter. Theyhave set a siege against us. They will strike Israel’sjudge’s jaw with a stick.

5:2 et tu Bethleem Ephrataparvulus es in milibus Iudaex te mihi egredietur qui sitdominator in Israhel etegressus eius ab initio adiebus aeternitatis

And you, BethlehemEphratha, are small amongJudah’s thousands. One whomay be Ruler in Israel willcome out of you to Me. AndHis coming out is from thebeginning, from eternity’sdays.

5:3 propter hoc dabit eosusque ad tempus in quoparturiens pariet reliquiaefratrum eius convertentur adfilios Israhel

Because of this, He will givethem even to the time inwhich the one in labor willgive birth. His brothers’survivors will be turned backto Israel’s children.

5:4 et stabit et pascet infortitudine Domini insublimitate nominis DominiDei sui et convertentur quianunc magnificabitur usquead terminos terrae

And He will stand and willfeed in the Lord’s strength, inthe grandeur of the Lord HisGod’s name. And they willbe converted, because nowHe will be magnified, even tothe land’s ends.

5:5 et erit iste pax Assyriuscum venerit in terramnostram et quando calcaveritin domibus nostris etsuscitabimus super eumseptem pastores et octoprimates homines

And this will be peace, whenthe Assyrian will come into


our land, and when he willtrample on our homes. Andwe will stir up over himseven shepherds and eightmen of the highest rank.

5:6 et pascent terram Assurin gladio et terram Nemrodin lanceis eius et liberabit abAssur cum venerit in terramnostram et cum calcaverit infinibus nostris

And they will feed Assyria’sland by the sword, andNimrod’s land by its spears. And He will free them fromAssyria when he will comeinto our land, and when hewill trample within ourborders.

5:7 et erunt reliquiae Iacobin medio populorummultorum quasi ros aDomino et quasi stillae superherbam quae non expectatvirum et non praestolaturfilios hominum

And Jacob’s survivors will beamong many peoples likedew from the Lord, and like

rain drops over grass, whichdoes not wait for man, and isnot comforted by man’schildren.

5:8 et erunt reliquiae Iacobin gentibus in mediopopulorum multorum quasileo in iumentis silvarum etquasi catulus leonis ingregibus pecorum qui cumtransierit et conculcaverit etceperit non est qui eruat

And Jacob’s survivors will beamong many peoples like alion among the forest’sbeasts, and like a lion cubamong the sheep flocks, who,when he will pass throughand trample and capture,there is no one who mayrescue.

5:9 exaltabitur manus tuasuper hostes tuos et omnesinimici tui interibunt

And He will lift up your handover your enemies, and allyour enemies will perish.

5:10 et erit in die illa dicit


Dominus auferam equos tuosde medio tui et disperdamquadrigas tuas

And it will be in that day, theLord says, I will take awayyour horses from among you,and will destroy your warchariots.

5:11 et perdam civitatesterrae tuae et destruamomnes munitiones tuas etauferam maleficia de manutua et divinationes non eruntin te

And I will ruin your land’scities, and destroy all yourfortifications. And I will takeaway sorceries from yourhand, and divinations will notbe among you.

5:12 et perire faciamsculptilia tua et statuas tuasde medio tui et non adorabisultra opera manuum tuarum

And I will make yoursculpted images and yourstatues perish from amongyou. And you will no longer

worship your hands’ works.

5:13 et evellam lucos tuos demedio tui et conteramcivitates tuas

And I will tear out yoursacred groves from amongyou, and crush your cities.

5:14 et faciam in furore et inindignatione ultionem inomnibus gentibus quae nonaudierunt

And I will work revenge infury and in indignationamong all nations who havenot listened.

Hear what the Lord says. Rise up and contend byjudgment against mountains,and let hills hear your voice!

6:2 audiant montes iudiciumDomini et fortia fundamentaterrae quia iudicium Dominicum populo suo et cumIsrahel diiudicabitur

Let mountains and the land’smighty foundations hear theLord’s judgment, because theLord’s judgment is with Hispeople, and will be settledwith Israel!

6:3 populus meus quid fecitibi et quid molestus fui tibiresponde mihi

My people, what have I doneto you? And in what have Itroubled you? Answer Me,

6:4 quia eduxi te de terra

Aegypti et de domoservientium liberavi te et misiante faciem tuam Mosen etAaron et Mariam

because I led you out ofEgypt’s land, and I freed youfrom slavery’s house! And Isent Moses and Aaron andMiriam before your face.

6:5 populus meus mementoquaeso quid cogitaveritBalac rex Moab et quidresponderit ei Balaam filiusBeor de Setthim usque adGalgalam ut cognosceretiustitias Domini

My people, remember, I pray,what Balak, Moab’s king,plotted, and what Balaam,Beor’s son, responded tohim, from Setthim even toGilgal, that he might knowthe Lord’s fairnesses.5

6:7 numquid placari potestDominus in milibus arietumaut in multis milibushircorum pinguium numquiddabo primogenitum meumpro scelere meo fructumventris mei pro peccatoanimae meae

Is the Lord pleased bythousands of rams, or bymany thousands of fat goats? Will I give my firstborn formy crime, my womb’s fruitfor my soul’s sin?

6:8 indicabo tibi o homoquid sit bonum et quidDominus quaerat a te utiquefacere iudicium et diligeremisericordiam et sollicitumambulare cum Deo tuo

I will show you, O man, what

may be good, and what theLord may seek from you – byall means to work judgmentand to delight in mercy andto walk concerned with yourGod.

6:9 vox Domini ad civitatemclamat et salus erittimentibus nomen tuumaudite tribus et quisadprobabit illud

The Lord’s voice calls out tothe city, and security will beto those fearing Your name! Hear, tribe! And who willapprove it?

6:10 adhuc ignis in domoimpii thesauri iniquitatis etmensura minor irae plena

Fire is still in the lawlesshouse! Treachery’s treasuresand the paltry measure arefull of wrath!

6:10 numquid iustificabostateram impiam et saccellipondera dolosa

6:12 in quibus divites eiusrepleti sunt iniquitate ethabitantes in ea loquebanturmendacium et lingua eorumfraudulenta in ore eorum

through which its rich arefilled by treachery, and itsinhabitants in it spoke lies? And their tongue in theirmouth is lying!

6:13 et ego ergo coepipercutere te perditione superpeccatis tuis

And I, therefore, began tostrike you with destructionover your sins.

6:14 tu comedes et nonsaturaberis et humiliatio tuain medio tui et adprehendeset non salvabis et quossalvaveris in gladium dabo

You will eat, yet will not besatisfied. And yourhumiliation will be in yourmidst. And you will capture,

yet will not make secure. And what you will makesecure, I will give to thesword.

You will sow, yet will notharvest. You will tread outthe olive, yet not be anointedby the oil, and the grape, yetwill not drink the wine.

7:2 periit sanctus de terra etrectus in hominibus non estomnes in sanguineinsidiantur vir fratrem suumvenatur ad mortem

The holy one has perishedfrom the land, and the honestone no longer exists amongmen. All are plotting inblood. Man hunts his brotherto death.

7:4 qui optimus in eis estquasi paliurus et qui rectusquasi spina de sepe diesspeculationis tuae visitatiotua venit nunc erit vastitaseorum

One who is best among themis like a thorn bush, and onewho is honest is like ahedge’s barb. Yourscrutiny’s day, yourvisitation, comes. Now theirdevastation will be.

7:5 nolite credere amico etnolite confidere in duce ab eaquae dormit in sinu tuocustodi claustra oris tui

Do not believe a friend, anddo not trust a leader! Guardyour mouth’s door from her

who sleeps at your side!

7:6 quia filius contumeliamfacit patri filia consurgitadversus matrem suam nuruscontra socrum suam inimicihominis domestici eius

For a son causes abuse to afather. A daughter rises upagainst her mother, adaughter-in-law against hermother-in-law. Man’senemies are those of hishousehold.

7:7 ego autem ad Dominumaspiciam expectabo Deumsalvatorem meum audiet meDeus meus

But I will watch for the Lord. I will wait for God mysecurity. My God will hearme.

7:8 ne laeteris inimica measuper me quia cecidiconsurgam cum sedero intenebris Dominus lux mea est

Do not rejoice over me, myenemy, because I have fallen!


I will rise up when I willhave sat down in shadows. The Lord is my light.

7:9 iram Domini portaboquoniam peccavi ei doneciudicet causam meam etfaciat iudicium meum educetme in lucem videbo iniustitiam eius

I will bear the Lord’s angerbecause I have sinned againstHim, until He judge my causeand work my judgment. Hewill lead me into light. I willsee, in His fairness.

7:10 et aspiciet inimica meaet operietur confusione quaedicit ad me ubi est DominusDeus tuus oculi mei videbuntin eam nunc erit inconculcationem ut lutumplatearum

And my enemy will look on. And she who says to me,‘Where is the Lord yourGod,’ will be covered byconfusion. My eyes will lookat her. Now she will be fortrampling, like the streets’

7:11 dies ut aedificenturmaceriae tuae in die illalonge fiet lex

Is there a day that your wallsmay be built? In that day, thelaw will seem far away.

7:12 in die illa et usque adte veniet Assur et usque adcivitates munitas et acivitatibus munitis usque adflumen et ad mare de mari etad montem de monte

In that day, and even to you,Assyria will come – and evento your fortified cities, andfrom your fortified citieseven to the river, and fromsea to sea and from mountainto mountain.

7:13 et erit terra indesolationem propterhabitatores suos et propterfructum cogitationum eorum

And the land will be indesolation because of itsinhabitants, and because of


their scheming’s fruit.

7:14 pasce populum tuum invirga tua gregem hereditatistuae habitantes solos in saltuin medio Carmeli pascenturBasan et Galaad iuxta diesantiquos

Feed Your people by Yourrod, Your inheritance’s flock,living alone in the wasteland,in Carmel’s midst! They willfeed in Bashan and Gilead,like in ancient days.

7:15 secundum diesegressionis tuae de terraAegypti ostendam eimirabilia

I will show him wonders, likein the days of his departurefrom Egypt’s land.

7:16 videbunt gentes etconfundentur super omnifortitudine sua ponent manussuper os aures eorum surdaeerunt

Nations will see and bedismayed by all its might.

They will place hands overtheir mouth. Their ears willbe deaf.

7:17 lingent pulverem sicutserpens velut reptilia terraeproturbabuntur de aedibussuis Dominum Deum nostrumdesiderabunt et timebunt te

They will lick dust likesnakes, like the land’sreptiles. They will be drivenfrom their homes. They willdesire the Lord our God andwill fear you.

7:18 quis Deus similis tuiqui aufers iniquitatem ettransis peccatum reliquiarumhereditatis tuae non inmittetultra furorem suum quoniamvolens misericordiam est

Who is a God like You, whotakes away treachery andpasses over the sins of yourinheritance’s survivors? Hewill not send in His furyfurther, because He isdesiring mercy.

7:19 revertetur et


miserebitur nostri deponetiniquitates nostras et proicietin profundum maris omniapeccata nostra

He will turn back and bemerciful to us. He will layaside our betrayals, andthrow all our sins into thesea’s depths.

7:20 dabis veritatem Iacobmisericordiam Abrahamquae iurasti patribus nostrisa diebus antiquis

You will give Abraham’smercy to Jacob, which youswore to our fathers fromancient days.
