Joshua 10

Now when Adoni-Zedek king ofJerusalem heard how Joshua hadtaken Ai. and had utterly destroyedit; as he had done to Jericho and herking, so he had done to Ai and her

king; and how the inhabitants ofGibeon had made peace withIsrael, and were among them.

They were very afraid, becauseGibeon was a great city, as one ofthe royal cities, and because it wasgreater than Ai, and all its men weremighty.

Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent toHoham king of Hebron,Piram king of Jarmuth,

Japhia king of Lachish, andDebir king of Eglon,

saying,

Come up to me and help me.Let us strike Gibeon;

for they have made peace with Joshuaand with the children of Israel.

Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king ofJerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth,the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered

themselves together and went up,they and all their armies, and

encamped against Gibeon,and made war against it.

The men of Gibeon sent toJoshua at the camp at

Gilgal, saying,

Dont abandonyour servants!

Come up to usquick lyand

save us!Help us;

for all the kingsof theAmorites that dwell in

the hill country havegathered together

against us.

So Joshua went up from Gilgal,he, and the whole army with him,including all the mighty men of valor.

Yahweh said to Joshua,

Dont fear them,for I have delivered them

into your hands.Not a man of them

will stand before you.

Joshua therefore cameto them suddenly.

He marched fromGilgal all night.

Yahweh confused them before Israel.He killed them with a great slaughter atGibeon, and chased them by the way ofthe ascent of Beth Horon, and struckthem to Azekah and to Makkedah.

As they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth Horon,Yahweh hurled down great stones fromthe skyon them toAzekah, andthey died.

There were more who diedfrom the hailstones than thosewhom the children of Israel killed with the sword.

Then Joshua spoke to Yahwehin the day when Yahwehdelivered up theAmorites beforethe childrenof Israel.

He said in the sight of Israel,

Sun, stand st i l l onGibeon!

You, moon, stopin thevalley of Aijalon!

The sun stood still,and the moon stayed,

until the nation had avengedthemselves of their enemies.

Isnt this written in the book of Jashar?

The sun stayed in the middle of the sky,and didnt hurry to go down about a whole day.

There was no day like that before it or after it, thatYahweh listened to the voice of a man;

for Yahweh fought for Israel.

Joshua returned, and all Israelwith him, to the camp to Gilgal.These five kings fled, and hidthemselves in the cave atMakkedah. Joshua wastold, saying,

The five kings have

been found, hiddenin the cave atMakkedah.

Joshua said, Roll largestones to cover the cavesentrance, and set menby it to guard them;but dont stay there.

Pursue your enemies, and attack them from the rear. Dont allow them to enter into their cities; for Yahweh your God has

delivered them into your hand.

When Joshua and the children of Israel hadfinished killing themwith a very greatslaughter untilthey wereconsumed,and theremnantwhich

remained of them hadentered into the

fortified cities,all the peoplereturned to

the campto Joshua

at Makkedahin peace.

None moved his tongue

against any of the childrenof Israel. Then Joshua said,

Open the cave entrance, and bring thosefive kings out of the cave to me.

They did so, and brought those five kings out of the caveto him: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, theking of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish,and the king of Eglon.

When they brought those kingsout to Joshua, Joshua called for

all the men of Israel,

and said to the chiefs of the men of war whowent with him, Come near. Put your feet onthe necks of these kings.

They came near, and puttheir feet on their necks.

Joshua said to them,

Dont be afraid,nor be dismayed.Be strong and

courageous,

for Yahweh willdo this to all yourenemies againstwhom you fight.

Afterward Joshua struckthem, put them to death, and

hanged them on five trees. Theywere hanging on the trees until theevening.

At the time of the going down of the sun,Joshua commanded, and they took themdown off the trees, and threw them intothe cave in which they had hiddenthemselves, and laid greatstones on the mouthof the cave,which

remainto thisveryday.

Joshua took

Makkedahonthat day, and struckit with the edge of thesword, with its king. Heutterly destroyed it and allthe souls who were in it.

He left no one remaining.He did to the king ofMakkedah as hehad done to theking of Jericho.

Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all

Israel with him, to Libnah, and foughtagainst Libnah. Yahweh deliveredit also, with its king, into the hand

of Israel. He struck it with theedge of the sword, and all

the souls who werein it. He left no one

remaining in it.He did to its

king as he haddone to the king

of Jericho.

Joshua passed from Libnah, and

all Israel with him, to Lachish,and encamped against it,and fought against it.Yahweh deliveredLachish into the handof Israel. He took it on thesecond day, and struck it with

the edge of the sword, withall the souls who were in it,according to all that

he had done to Libnah. Then Horam kingof Gezer came up to help Lachish; and

Joshua struck him and his people,until he had left him no oneremaining. Joshua passedfrom Lachish, and all Israel

with him, to Eglon; and theyencamped against it fought

against it. They took it onthat day, and struck it with theedge of the sword. He utterly

destroyed all the souls whowere in it that day, according

to all that he had doneto Lachish.

Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel

with him, to Hebron; and they fought againstit. They took it, and struck it with the edge ofthe sword, with its king and all its cities, and allthe souls who were in it.He left no one remaining, accordingto all that he had done to Eglon;but he utterly destroyed it, andall the souls who were in it.

Joshua returned, and all Israel

with him, to Debir, and foughtagainst it. He took it, with its kingand all its cities. They struckthem with the edge of thesword, and utterlydestroyed all thesouls who were in it.He left no one remaining.As he had done to Hebron,so he did to Debir, and toits king; as he had donealso to Libnah, andto its king.

So Joshua struck all the land, the hillcountry, the South, the lowland, the slopes,

and all their kings. He left no one remaining,but he utterly destroyed all that breathed,

as Yahweh, the God of Israel, commanded.

Joshua struck them from Kadesh Barnea evento Gaza, and all the countryof Goshen, even to Gibeon.

Joshua took all thesekings and their land

at one time,

because Yahweh,

the God o f Israel,

foug ht for Israel.

Joshua returned,and all Israel with him,to the camp to Gilgal.
