  • Cyril ZammitFair Directors Welcome

Discovery and insight are two words that express, perhaps better than any, the distinctive character of Design Days Dubaia character reinforced by this third edition of the fair.

This year we have incorporated Discover as a core theme, with a new initiative that gives a platform to young voices from a single country; for this sections debut we have chosen France in collaboration with the Institut Franais in the UAE. Discovery is also key among the criteria for the selection of galleries, installations and live performances, as well as building the public programme.

Known as a fair that surprises and delights in equal measure, Design Days Dubai is bigger than ever and I am proud that, among the 33 galleries, are representatives from eight countries that have never before exhibited in the Middle East in addition to ten galleries from this region. With such new and diverse talent alongside renowned modern masters, the range of works being offered underlines the universality of the language of design.

We are honoured to have the continued patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, whose support underlines the importance of design as a vital building block of culture.

Under the aegis of our Strategic Partner, Dubai Culture & Art Authority, and in partnership with d3 Dubai Design District, we have expanded the Public Programme of seminars, talks and design performances. Following its successful debut last year, the Bespoke Design section returns to the fair.

Our valued sponsor Van Cleef & Arpels stages an exhibition that celebrates the profound link between craftsmanship and design, andin association with Tashkeelhas organised the Middle East Emergent Artist Award for its second year. Emaar underlines its commitment to design by hosting the fair for its third year and Audi Middle Easta company driven by its passion for designalso returns as a sponsor. We thank them all for their continuing collaboration.

We are proud to be contributing to the global conversation about collectible design and welcome you to come and immerse yourself at the fair.

I hope I will have the pleasure of meeting you here in person.

IN PRAISE OF HANDSAn exhibition by Van Cleef & Arpels

Maison Van Cleef & Arpels is proud to be the luxury sponsor and partner of Design Days Dubai for the third consecutive year. A unique concept in the Middle East, this fair is dedicated to bring the most exclusive purchasable and limited-edition designs to the region. Famed for its exceptional creations and virtuoso craftsmanship, the Maison presents this year In Praise of Hands, an exhibition on the art of High Jewelry that pays homage to the expert hands of master craftsmen: the Mains dOr.

Inspired from the book by Franco Cologni In Praise of Hands, Van Cleef & Arpels pays tribute to the artistry that goes into creating a piece of High Jewellery by explaining each of the distinct skills with evocative black and white photographs by Francesco Cito. This exhibition celebrates the legendary skilled hands who dedicate countless hours of meticulous work and devote their ancestral expertise to transform objects into meaningful precious jewels. It also unveils the finer points of Mystery Setting, one of the Maisons emblematic techniques. The crafts portrayed at the exhibition are accompanied by spectacular unique High Jewellery creations reflecting Van Cleef & Arpels innovative craftsmanship, creativity and excellence.

The beauty lovers and admirers of perfection are invited to embark on a fascinating journey in the mysterious and enchanting world of High Jewellery, and celebrate the act of creation with Maison Van Cleef & Arpels.

    Audi Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good design must always express a vision. Something one can witness once again at the third edition of Design Days Dubai. Just like most artists, Audi design seeks inspiration everywhere. Ideas might arise from observing an innovative house, a classic piece of furniture or a sensational dress. The Audi designers, not unlike an artist, have to have their fingers on the pulse of the times and are guided by a variety of influencesbe it from nature, architecture, art or film.

As global design patron and responsible employer, Audi supports regional cultural arts at its locations. For the third year the brand with the four rings is an exclusive sponsor for Design Days Dubai, which will showcase the path-breaking works of leading design galleries and the most innovative of designers from around the world.

As a progressive car manufacturer, Audi constantly develops its design philosophy with each new generation of models. Audis refined design language and philosophy will focus on a strong link between technology and design. You can experience this firsthand at this years Design Days Dubai with the display of our new Audi A8, where design and technology mesh perfectly.

Audis most elegantly designed car will be displayed in the UAE for the first time. The Audi A8 features Matrix LED technology. The high-beam comprises 25 individual light-emitting diodes per unit which can be switched on and off or dimmed individually depending on the situation. Additional features of the new headlights are the intelligent cornering light, new-look daytime running lights and dynamic turn signals. The lighting system uses predictive route data to adjust the distribution of light in response to the current driving situation.

It is a great pleasure for Audi to once again be part of Design Days Dubai.

    Sincerely,

    Trevor HillManaging DirectorAudi Middle East

    ART FACTUM GALLERYBEIRut / LEBAnon

Founded in 2011 and located in a renovated former steel factory in Beiruts industrial Quarantine District, Art Factum Gallery is devoted to presenting all forms of contemporary art and design in a fresh way.

With contemporary art, the gallery focuses on bringing international artists into the artistic-cultural scene of Beirut, and also projects itself onto a wider stage through participation in several international art fairs and events, as well as maintaining tight bonds with several international galleries and institutions. These local and international collaborations ensure the spreading of the artistic message to the massesone of the gallerys main motives.

As for design, with Lebanons artistic spotlight shifting slightly towards the more utilitarian and three-dimensional aspect of art forms and products, Art Factum Gallery chooses mostly to endorse local designers. The gallerys annual design show serves to introduce new talents, as well as promoting designers who have already launched their careers, all serving to emphasise the value and dynamism of contemporary Lebanese design. It is also important to highlight that the designers and the gallery itself mostly use local materials and crafts for the production of the design pieces.

Transcending the classical borders between art and design, Carpenters Workshop Gallery stands at the intersection of these two universes to achieve a perfect symbiosis. The gallery produces and exhibits functional sculptures by international rising and established artists and designers, especially those going outside their traditional territories of expression. Carpenters Workshop Gallery is actively involved in the research and production of the limited-edition works exhibitedits choices guided by research of an emotional, artistic and historical relevance.

The gallery is grounded in the partnership of childhood friends, Julien Lombrail and Loc le Gaillard, who first opened a space in Londons Chelsea in 2006, in a former carpenters workshop. They followed this with a second space in Mayfair in 2008. The opening of a third space, in Paris in 2011, at 54 rue de la Verreriean address steeped in history as home to the Galerie de France for several decadesis a kind of return to their roots. The gallerys Paris branch underlines the founders commitment, as well as that of Director Aurlie Julien, to the international promotion of their artists and designers.

Carwan Gallery was created when architects Pascale Wakim and Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte joined their complementary cultural backgrounds to propose an extraordinary vision for contemporary design in the Middle East. The gallerys first objective was to foster the singular relationship between designers and craftsmen through commissions. As a result, more than 15 designers from all over the world found inspiration in Middle Eastern crafts to reinvent traditional techniques and create unique contemporary objects.

After three years of exhibitions in international design fairs, art centres and museums, Carwan recently opened a new space in Lebanon at Gefinor Centre in Clemenceau to showcase contemporary objects in limited editions. The gallery also provides creative and design-centered consultancy to collectors, architects and interior designers, offering the possibility to receive site-specific tailored services or installations.

Bringing together contemporary design and art, Clear Edition & Gallery was founded in Tokyo in 2007 with a mission to explore the boundaries between the various realms, focusing on artists and designers who have the potential to surpass or elevate such genres. The gallerys exhibitions have included design, painting, photography, media art, contemporary crafts and, recently, street art-influenced talents. For Clear Edition & Gallery, categorisation is not a concern, their interests lie in breaking preconceived notions through the artists they collaborate with.

Tokyo is a city with diverse a cultural background, both domestic and international. Its complex and mixed aesthetic values continuously maintain the city as one of the most fertile soils for emerging new cultures. Enjoying a key position in such a city, Clear Edition & Gallery aims to function as a hub for emerging cultures and aesthetics throughout Asia, and to present these to the world.

Become a benchmark for quality and originality, Southern Guild encourages collaboration and discourse, aiming to stimulate and provoke the local design industry.

Exhibiting at Design Days Dubai for the third year in a row, stilwerk will exhibit a range of outstanding designer pieces, exclusive prototypes and limited-editions by both established and up-and-coming designers including Elisa Strozyk, Silvia Knppel, Brooksbank & Collins, Hermann August Weizenegger and Jan Kath, among others. The exhibit will express cutting-edge developments in contemporary rugs and carpets.

Providing comforting warmth, an attractive decoration or a symbol of wealth and status, rugs have many functions and are linked to a long, important cultural history. The exhibition spans both classic wall and floor rugs, as well as sculptural experiments that have abandoned traditional functions or recreated them in stunningly original forms.

With continual evolution and constant discovery being key elements of Design Days Dubais philosophy, the fair this year introduces a new section called 'Discover'. Its guiding principle is to focus on the emergence of a contemporary design scene in a single countryin particular, a country that is better known for traditional design. This idea of a rediscovery or rebirth of design within an established design culture is a more intriguing and less obvious approach than focusing on a country where a consciousness of design is only beginning to emerge.

Dedicated to France in 2014, the debut edition of Discover is a joint initiative with the Institut Franais in the UAE and will present four Paris-based galleries: Galerie Gosserez, Galerie S.Bensimon, Next Level Galerie and Ymer & Malta.

The four are distinguished not only by their youth as institutionsnone has been established for more than five yearsbut also by the freshness of their approach and willingness to challenge boundaries with the artists they represent and the works they commission. Although the galleries will present mostly work by French artist-designers, thus highlighting the emergence of a new generation in their country, nationality is not a criterion. Rather, through the artists and works presentedregardless of their originsthe galleries will express a specifically French point of view on contemporary design as an evolution from the countrys long artistic and aesthetic tradition.

For this reason the Discover galleries will not be separated from the other exhibitors. As Design Days Dubai has always demonstrated, by presenting the avant-garde alongside modern classics, the cutting-edge of design is not a world of its own, but simply part of the cultural continuum.

Borrowing equal inspiration from art and nature, the works are produced as unique pieces or in limited series in Binmes Burgundy-based workshop. The brand's inspiration comes from all that is observable, including the environment, fauna and flora.

After studying wood-carving at the prestigious Ecole Boulle in Paris, Ingrid Michel and Frdric Pain's skills were soon in demand in film and contemporary art circles. This rewarding work would inspire their personal projects. Combining craft procedures with cutting-edge techniques, they dare to create unlikely combinations, such as smooth, light resin paired with solid, untreated oak. They assemble organic shapes that evoke the vegetal or mineral world with contemporary elements and their creations enjoy pure, sensual and reassuring lines, with a chromatic palette that is infinite, in addition to colour combinations that range from daring to minimalist. In the world of Binme, everything seems opposed yet coexists in perfect harmony.

Created in 2013 by Elaine NG Yan Ling and first presented to the public by Isabelle Pascal as part of the spring 2013 installation at Wuhao Curated Shop in Beijing, 'Climatology' celebrates natures survival tactics and reflects the changing seasons. Originally designed for a Beijing sitea former imperial gardenand engineered to the citys climate, 'Climatology' is a new series of experimental smart textiles derived from the design concept of Naturology.

Layers of veneer are combined with fabric, thermo-chromatic resin and reflective surfaces to create objects that adapt to fluctuations in light, temperature and humidity. Each piece, inspired by the natural living behaviour of the desert plant Selaginella Lepidoplylla (also known as the resurrection plant or false rose of Jericho), is handcrafted and set in shape. As the materials mature, the objects begin to work together, changing according to their surroundings. They work individually or as a group, affected by the memory of their construction and responding to natures invisible energy.

About the designer: A graduate of Londons Central Saint Martins School, TED Fellow and Founder of The Fabrick Lab in Hong Kong, Elaine Ng Yan Ling is a British-Chinese smart textile designer. Her work, based on bio-mimicry and combining traditional crafts with modern technologies, has been exhibited at the V&A in London, Harbour Front Centre in Toronto, Milan Design Week with Lidewij Edelkoort, TextielMuseum in Tilburg, Netherlands, Espace EDF Art Foundation in Paris and at Wuhao Beijing.
