It all began with a dream. A vision, to preserve and promote the identity and culture of the people of the UAE. It all began withHis Highness the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It was his dream that saw the birth of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Cult ure and Heritage (ADACH).

Today, this dream is brought alive by nurturing and supporting talent and encouraging initiative across fields such as education, media, literature and art. At the ADACH, we also spearhead projects to safeguard our cultural assets, ensure development of museums, promote archaeological research, historical urban planning, management of cultural landscapes, conservation of the intangible heritage, as well as help in the development of cultural tourism.

Our biggest endeavor is to encourage and foster the growth of talent. The Emirates Photography Competition, is one such effort to see the spark come alive through pictures. It is one more step towards making our dream come true.

طيب اهلل ثراه. �ها هو احللم ي�سبح حقيقة من خالل دعم املواهب �الطاقات، �ت�سجيع

املبادرات الهادفة يف جمالت التعليم، �الإعالم، �الفنون �الآداب.

اأبوظبي للثقافة �الرتاث، لقد قمنا بتطوير العديد من امل�ساريع الطموحة يف هيئة

املعار�ض �اإدارة الآثرية، �البحوث املتاحف، �تطوير الثقافة، كنوز حماية جمالت يف

الفنية، �احلفاظ على الرتاث، �امل�ساعدة يف تطوير ال�سياحة الثقافية.

اإن هدفنا الآ�سمى يتمثل يف ت�سجيع املواهب �الطاقات. اإن م�سابقة الإمارات للت�سوير

نحو حتقيق اأخرى اإنها خطوة الفر�ض. اإيل فتح نطاق جديد من ت�سعى الفوتوغرايف

Black & White Through Creative EyesThe 6th Emirates Photography Competition 2011. Under the patronage of International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) is organizing the Sixth Session of the Emirates Photography Competition (EPC) 2011.

The aim of the EPC is to develop photography in the United Arab Emirates by attracting as many photographers as possible and nurturing their talents and by supporting professionals. EPC intends to achieve this through specialized workshops, interactive meetings, seminars and holding both solo and collective exhibitions inside and outside the country. The EPC also encourages the comprehensive acquisition and publication of photographic works.

Being one of the most renowned photographic events in the Middle East, the EPC invites the submission of outstanding works of different artistic styles. However, all participating works must respect performance values and standards of photographic art, as well as FIAP rules. In each annual session, the EPC has a “Main Theme” that encourages photographers to explore untapped potential. There are also four additional themes which may vary from one year to the next.This year, the EPC celebrates the famous US photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984), one of the greatest creative talents in the history of photography. He was best known for his dazzling black-and-white photographs, which are still inspiring the photographic world today. He developed the Zone System, for determining a picture’s optimal exposure and development. His books and pictures are a precious visual legacy. The Sixth Session’s ‘Black and White’ theme focuses on Adams’ works and is a tribute to the importance of his research and study of photography.

As part of the Sixth Session’s program the EPC also honors photographer Noor Ali RashId (1929-2010), one of the leading figures in the art of photography in the UAE. The EPC would like to honor Noor Ali Rashid in recognition of, and as a token of appreciation for, his photographic work, which documents details of life within UAE society and its ruling families.A special award named after the late photographer Noor Ali Rashid will be given to the best Emirati photographer of 2011 for works that highlight local environmental and cultural symbols of the UAE through participation in different themes of the competition.Due to the distinguished level of the participating works at the previous UAE Talent Competition, the youth section of the EPC has been split into two age groups: sixteen to twenty-one and those under sixteen. The Competition seeks contributions under the theme ‘Image of the future’ and it aims to recognize young photographic talent from around the world.

For the first time the EPC will give an award for the best collection of photographs from participants living in the Arab world. A FIAP Gold Medal will be given to each of the best five authors participating in the Sixth Session. There will also be an award for the best five groups from international photography associations and clubs. This will support the role that these clubs play in developing the cultural movement of photography.

The EPC believes in the inclusive nature of art and its timeless ability to unite the interests and creativity of human beings everywhere, as well as the ability of photography to facilitate interaction and communication amongst people. Therefore the EPC’s Sixth Edition will be open to all photographers from around the world.

على اقتناء الأعمال �ن�سرها بكافة الطرق املمكنة.

ا�ستقبال اإىل تنظر فاإنها املنطقة يف الحرتافية امل�سابقات اأهم اإحدى كونها من �انطالقا

الأعمال املتميزة من خمتلف املدار�ض �الأ�ساليب الفنية؛ كالأعمال الرتكيبية، البانوراما، ال�سرائح

املوجبة �ال�سالبة، ال�سلبيات، ال�سور الرقمية، املعاجلات التقنية الفنية احلديثة، �ال�سور باختالف

الفوتوغرايف الت�سوير لفن الأدائية القيم عن الأعمال تلك تخرج األ على �اأحجامها. مقا�ساتها

�القوانني املتبعة يف الإحتاد الد�يل لفن الت�سوير الفوتوغرايف.

تطرح امل�سابقة �سنويًا »ثيمة رئي�سة« يراعى فيها حث امل�سورين على البحث �ال�ستغال يف

جوانب غري مطر�قة، اإ�سافة اإىل اأربعة ثيمات اأخرى متدا�لة، �متغرية من عام اإىل عام.

حتتفي امل�سابقة هذا العام بامل�سور الأمريكي ال�سهري )اأن�سل اآدمز( 1902 – 1984 �الذي يعترب

من اأعظم املبدعني يف تاريخ الت�سوير الفوتوغرايف، �ذلك ملا متثله اأعماله بالأبي�ض �الأ�سود

ب ماي�سمى ��سع من اأ�ل فهو هذا، يومنا �حتى املا�سي القرن بداية منذ �اإلهام �سحر من

فها تعترب اإرثًا ب�سريًا ثمينًا، Zone System )نطاق التباين الأحادي( كما اأن موؤلفاته ��سوره التي خَلّ�ت�ستنبط الد�رة ال�ساد�سة ثيمتها الرئي�سة )الأبي�ض �الأ�سود( من مكنونات اأعماله تقديراً �اإميانًا

خالل من العربية الإمارات لد�لة �البيئية املحلية الرموز اأعماله يف تربز 2011 لعام اإماراتي

م�ساركته يف ثيمات امل�سابقة املختلفة.

اماراتية مواهب م�سابقة يف امل�ساركة الأعمال عليه ظهرت الذي املتميز للم�ستوى �نظراً

) 21 يف الد�رة املا�سية فقد مت تطويرهذا الق�سم لي�سمل فئتني عمريتني خمتلفتني )16 –

�)حتت 16 �سنة( �بثيمة عامة حتت عنوان )�سورة امل�ستقبل( موجهة للمواهب الفوتوغرافية

من ال�سباب �الطلبة يف جميع د�ل العامل.

كما مت للمرة الأ�ىل تخ�سي�ض جائزة لل�سورة العربية �هي عبارة عن خم�ض ميداليات ذهبية

اإ�سافة ال�ساد�سة، الد�رة العربية امل�ساركة يف الد�ل اأعمال من لأف�سل خم�ض جمموعة متنح

للميداليات الذهبية �اجلوائز التي متنح لأف�سل خم�ض م�ساركات جماعية من جمعيات �اأندية

الثقايف احلراك دعم يف الفنية �التجمعات املنتديات هذه لد�ر ت�سجيعًا العاملية الت�سوير

لل�سورة الفوتوغرافية.

Words of the Director General We in the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage emphasize our deep attention to all that is linked to innovation in all its live manifestations; writing, art, movement and image. We work, in the «Emirates Photography Competition» and other diverse events and innovative activities, to link creativity with the promising youth to the highest levels of professionalism, so that they possess the necessary skills through workshops and exhibitions of photography and other means.

We in the Authority believe that photography in particular has a major role, not only because of the fact that a photo is a reflection of a beautiful reality seen from the lens view, which reshapes this beauty, giving it more life, vitality, shine and radiance, but also because the image remains a record of the memory of the people and the state. It preserves the features of the present, making it easier to work to make tomorrow more prosperous and developed.

With photos we preserve the beautiful present of the UAE and of Abu Dhabi in particular. This is the present which the founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed may God bless his soul, has worked to colour with excellence and innovation in culture and the arts, and to make it pioneering in all fields. That is why the Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage launched the «Emirates Photography Competition», holding it year after year, and seeking to attract the largest number of talented photographers to participate in it. It aims for the advancement of local, Gulf and Arab photography to reach the level of expectations, aspiring that photos become a cultural, tourism, and educational guide, and an additional indicator to what the UAE is witnessing in terms of the elevation of the arts and man.

Pictures are a form of human expression since ancient times, but today they represent the latest innovations of man in his relationship with the existence that surrounds him. People communicate with each other via photography today and get in touch in all areas of knowledge and culture. In photography today>s human fields of knowledge meet. Photos capture philosophy, social sciences, art, difference cultures, and distinct identities. Humans rely on their social knowledge to choose the subject of images, to be closest to the representation of human nature and the feelings of one>s self. They rely on scientific knowledge to master focus and dive deep into the art of shadows and shapes, necessary to perfect the captured image. They also rely on technical knowledge to shed light on their favourite subjects, in creativity and re-composition of things in life. They rely on their distinct cultural identities in order to preserve their heritage and pass on what they inherited from their forefathers to future generations, so that this heritage may also retain a prestigious place among nations, open to the enlightened currents of thought and culture, but is not lost or falls captive to a form of globalization that threaten their identity and culture. امتلكها التي العل�م جتتمع الف�ت�غرايف الت�ص�ير ويف والثقايف، املعريف التبادل م�صاحات

ال�ص�رة، من فل�صفة اجتماعية ومعرفة علمية وفنية، وثقافة اختالف الي�م فتمثلها يف اإن�صان

اي�صال التحديات يف الف�ت�غرايف ونحن ن�صعى لك�صب للت�ص�ير الإمارات الأوىل مل�صابقة النطالقة منذ

نفخر به يف التاأكيد على فعل احلراك الف�ت�غرايف ودوره يف تن�صيط امل�صار الثقايف لأي جمتمع..

ها نحن الي�م نحتفل معكم يف ختام فعاليات الدورة ال�صاد�صة للم�صابقة والتي حملت ثيمتها الرئي�صية

عن�ان )الأ�ص�د والأبي�ض بعي�ن خالقه( والتي تاأتي احتفاًء باأحد اأهم امل�ص�رين يف العامل الذي كان له الدور

الكبري يف تاأ�صي�ض فن الت�ص�ير احلديث اأّل وه� )اأن�صل اآدامز(.

فبعد اأع�ام من تاأ�صي�ض الفكرة وخروجها على اأر�ض ال�اقع يف بدايتها كدورة حملية تهتم باأعمال امل�ص�ر

دورة اإىل والرابعة الثالثة الدورة يف العربي والعامل اخلليجية الدول يف امل�ص�ر ثم ومن فقط الماراتي

عاملية اإكتملت العام ال�صابق بالرعاية الدولية للم�صابقة من قبل الحتاد الدويل لفن الت�ص�ير الف�ت�غرايف

) الفياب( وكذلك ح�ص�ل امل�صابقة على ع�ص�ية اجلمعية الأمريكية للت�ص�ير ال�ص�ئي هذا العام، وكل هذا

مل يكن ليتاأتى ل�ل الرعاية امل�صتمرة والدعم الكبري الذي تقدمه هيئة اأب�ظبي للثقافة والرتاث وعلى راأ�صها

الدارة العليا التي مل تاأل�ا جهداً يف ت�فري كل ال�صبل لإجناح هذا امل�صروع واإي�صاله اىل م�صت�يات اكرب من

جمرد م�صابقة لل�ص�ر بل اأ�صبح ي�صاهي املهرجانات الفنية العاملية.

عملت ادارة امل�صابقة على تن�يع براجمها واأن�صطتها على مدار العام ويف خمتلف الأ�صعدة فمن الدور

التعليمي وه� الأ�صا�ض الذي تنطلق عليه خط�اتنا يف خلق قاعدة م�ؤهلة من الك�ادر واخلربات ال�طنية

وجتاربهم خرباتهم لتقدمي اأب�ظبي مدينة اإىل العامليني امل�ص�رين من عدد باإ�صتقطاب قمنا حيث

العاملية من خالل املعار�ض وور�صات العمل واملحا�صرات والندوات، اأ�صاد من �صارك بها بامل�صت�ى العايل

الربامج واأ�صركنا يف هذه الماراتي و�صقل مهاراته، واأهميتها كرافد لتط�ير قدرات امل�ص�ر يف تنظيمها

عدد من الفنانني وامل�ص�رين الف�ت�غرافيني الذين ميثل�ن اأهم التجارب يف دول جمل�ض التعاون اخلليجي

والعامل العربي كنم�ذج واقعي على قدرة الفن يف متتني الروابط والتعاون بني الأ�صقاء لك�صب املعرفة

والت�ا�صل وتنمية القدرات ال�صخ�صية يف العمل اجلماعي، و كان اآخرها ور�صة عمل يف الفن املفاهيمي

قدمها امل�ص�ر الأمريكي ال�صهري مي�صا ج�ردن رائد هذا الفن كرافد مهم يحّر�ض امل�ص�رين على البحث

والإ�صتغال يف فن�ن الت�ص�ير املختلفة.

ومن اأجل تنمية الذائقة الفنية واثراءها مبختلف التجارب قدمت امل�صابقة عدد من املعار�ض الفنية واأبرزها

والذي العامل الفنانني يف والفائزة لأهم الأعمال املختارة اأف�صل الذي يقدم ال�صن�ي معر�ض امل�صابقة

يعد من اأهم معار�ض الت�ص�ير الف�ت�غرايف يف املنطقه ويحر�ض على زيارته املهتمني من خمتلف دول

العامل، اإ�صافًة اإىل الإ�صدارات الن�عية لكتب امل�صابقة الفاخرة والتي كان اآخرها كتاب اأمري الن�ر.

الت�ص�ير لفن الدويل الإحتاد مع بالتعاون والرتاث للثقافة اأب�ظبي هيئة تنظم الدويل ال�صعيد وعلى

مبدينة القادم �صبتمرب يف الف�ت�غرايف للت�ص�ير لل�صباب والثالث�ن الثالث الدويل البينايل الف�ت�غرايف

اأب�ظبي وذلك تاأكيداً للثقة الدولية التي ي�ليها الفياب للم�صابقة من خالل امل�صت�ى احلريف والن�عي الذي

ظهرت به يف اأول دورة دولية حتت رعاية الإحتاد الدويل لفن الت�ص�ير الف�ت�غرايف.

وعلى �ص�ء ماتقدم فاإننا نعدكم بالإ�صتمرارية يف تقدمي الأف�صل دائمًا، وناأمل اأن حتقق الدورة ال�صاد�صة

وامل�صاركة امل�ص�رين بدعم اإل يتحقق لن النجاح اأن اأعيننا ن�صب وا�صعني اأهداف، من منها املرج�

باأعمالهم الفنية املتميزة وم�صاندتهم مل�صروعهم ال�طني م�صابقة الإمارات للت�ص�ير الف�ت�غرايف الذي

يحمل اإ�صمًا غاليًا علينا جميعًا.

Creativity takes the standSince the launch of the first Emirates Photography Competition six years ago, we have continued to progress amongst professional photography contests in the region and the world.

We are here today to celebrate the accomplishment of the sixth session of the Competition with you. The main theme this year is «Black and White through Creative Eyes». The Competition celebrates famous photographer Ansel Adams.

The Competition was originally only focussed on the works of UAE photographers, then on photographers from the Gulf States it became international last year with the official Patronage of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) and as Member of the Photographic Society of America this year.

All of these achievements would not have been possible without the continuing backing and substantial support provided by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage.The administration of the Competition has worked hard to produce a diverse range of programs and activities through a variety of professional workshops, lectures, and practical and educational seminars, which have won the praise of all those involved. A number of artists and photographers who represent the most important experiences in the Gulf States and the Arab World have been engaged in these programs. The last was a specialised workshop on Conceptual Photography by the famous legend in this Art, Misha Gordin., to encourage photographers to work on research and new fields.

The most important artists in the world take part in the Competition, which displays one of the most important exhibitions of photography in the region.There are also a range of quality publications that are a product of the Competition, the latest being “The Prince of Light” Catalogue.

In the interaction between the Competition, the community and photographers, the local administration has worked to establish the Council of Photographers in Abu Dhabi. This has been formed in cooperation with a group of Emirati artists who have made notable contributions in this regard.

At an international level, the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage, with the cooperation of the FIAP is going to host and organise the 33rd International Youth Photographers Biennale, which will be held in September 2011 in Abu Dhabi.

Bryan F Peterson - USABryan has been a successful commercial photographer for over 30 years whose clients include American Express, Kodak, UPS, Phillips and Citibank. In addition he has received awards from the Communication Arts Photography Annual seven times, Print Magazine four times and has also won the prestigious New York Art Directors Gold Award. He is also a contributing editor at Popular Photography magazine and has been teaching photography for over 20 years. His largest audience knows him as the founder of PPSOP.com, the worlds number one on-line photography school and the as the photographer/writer of six best-selling books, Understanding Exposure, Learning to See Creatively, Beyond Portraits, Understanding Shutter Speed, Understanding Closeup Photography and Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Photography Field Guide.
