Youth in govern-ment day:

A day in the Life of HB City CouncilBy: CeCilia walKer, staff writter

hile many people through-out the u.S. were mailing

their tax returns on April 15th, Huntington Beach City Hall was organizing its “Youth in gov-ernment day.” this event was established over 30 years ago as an annual event to increase high school students’ understanding and involvement in government and provide city government staff an opportunity to hear the opinions and questions of to-day’s youth. About 100 Edison, Marina, Huntington and ocean View students convened in City Hall to shadow various depart-ments including firefighting, li-brary services and city attorney. Youth in government day began with opening Remarks by Major Cathy green followed by an outline of the voting process

W

given by Registrar of Voters Neil Kelley. then each student partici-pated in their assigned internship. Edison student Alina Carnahan, who interned with the City Coun-cil stated, “It was interesting to see how the Huntington Beach govern-ment run their day to day activities. I like seeing the different groups work together.” one of the internships was with the City Council. A mock City Council meeting was held with two Requests for Council Action topics: Main Street Closure and the Annex-ing of Sunset Beach. Edison Junior Allyson Bach’s internship was as “Council Member” along with sev-en other students who worked with Mayor Cathy green, Mayor Pro-tem Jill Hardy and Councilmen Joe Carchio and devin dywer as they debated topics. When asked about her experience she responded, “I enjoyed being a council member for the day. I now understand how challenging it is to pass a law.” After a morning of internships was a luncheon and awards ceremony followed with an amazing speech by guest speaker, Sgt. Larone V. Lewis, 3rd Battalion/First Marines.

the Huntington Beach Youth of the Year Award was then presented to the students who best exemplify the top Senior Students throughout the city based on Academics, Ex-tracurricular Activities, Volunteer-ing and Character. Last year’s re-cipient was Edison’s Emily Walker and again our school was proudly represented by the 1st Runner up title going to Amy Le. Amy has served Edison and our community in many areas including Kiwins President, Yearbook Editor, Vice President of the Vietnamese Stu-dent Association and winning 4 MuN gavels. this event is sponsored by the H.B. Youth Board, a volunteer ad-visory board comprised of students from each of the city’s high schools. Edison has three students on this City Council appointed Board: Carey Huss, Lauren Morse and Cecilia Walker. the Board mem-bers keep the City Council aware of community needs and interests, participate in various City activities and work to increase interest and participation among young people in community affairs.

or an uncle’s story about a by-gone era, but u.S. History’s annual Hip-pie day. Each u.S. History and CIBACS class came to school with flowers in their hair and bare feet on April 29th and 30th. the day started with a psychedelic story from Mr. Boone and a slideshow of the hippie culture and continued to the sound-track of famous 1960s bands, such as the grateful dead, the Beatles, and the doors. the day followed with a small period in which the hippies created signs that declared “Love Now!” and “Pick flowers, not fights.” They walked in circles, chanting anti-war statements such

as “Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids have you killed today?” amid a flurry of honking cars and stunned pedestrians. the day ended with students piling into the Administra-tion Office and continuing their pro-test within earshot of Edison ’s most influential adults. The day ended with students walking around the school as hippies, exhilarated with their first brush with social justice. Proclaimed by students as “the best day of the year,” the hippie simula-tion not only helped the students realize their right to free speech and protesting, but also showed a side to the hippie movement that strayed away from drug use and towards a far more peaceful world.

Fountain Valley, and Newport Har-bor, thanks to an immense amount of support from fans. Many of the athletes have also been able to par-ticipate in prestigious invitational meets such as the Pasadena games, trabuco Invite, Arcadia Invitational, and oC Championships. there were several outstanding marks and times at trabuco Invite. For instance, Ngoc-Han Nguyen

broke 33 feet in the triple jump for a 3rd place and came back for 6th place in the long jump. Also, Michaela Schaeffer placed second in the triple jump. An-other great jumper was Brittany Pham, who placed 4th in the long jump. Some amazing efforts at oC Champs include a 5th place in the Frosh/Soph mile by Alix Quenneville with a time of 5:15 (a new school record for the Frosh/Soph level) and a 6th place in the Frosh/Soph two

mile by Janie Weiss. Also, the Frosh/Soph 4x400 team of Haley Seward, Rachel Nel-son, Michaela Schaeffer, and Nikki Peurner won their heat! Lauren grego ran an amaz-ing 800, finally meeting the CIF standard of 2:20. In addition, Michaela Schaeffer jumped an impressive 15”10’ in the long jump and 35”6’ in the triple jump. Another amazing jumper at oC Champs was Anna Lindsey, who jumped 15”7’ in the long jump. there were also many amazing efforts in the sprints at oC Champs. the 4x100 meter relay team of Michaela Schaeffer, Lauren deats, Rachel Nelson, and Nikki Puerner set a new school record for Edison. Nikki Puerner also ran an amazing time of 58 seconds in the 400, fi-nally breaking 60! Also, Rachel Nelson has consistently ran 62 seconds in the 400 over the past couple meets, being a very reliable team member. throughout the season many girls have had amazing times and marks at the dual meets, which is surprising because of the fact that these are all ran on dirt tracks. one of the most exciting meets of the sea-son was definitely the meet against Foun-tain Valley. Finally on home turf again, the Edison Charger girls worked hard for their win, which placed them tied for second in the Sunset League. At this meet there were many injuries that proved these girls’ dedica-tion. Senior Marla goodfellow sprained her knee during the 300 meter hurdle race, but showed tremendous strength in the way she handled it. As a result of the fiasco caused by the meet official’s miscounting of laps dur-ing the two mile, Haley Seward finished her two mile race by collapsing, but only after she took 2nd place and a new personal best. the Chargers have proven over and over throughout the season that they can take any-thing. going into League Finals with a three way tie for 2nd place, the Edison girls took 4th place in Sunset League. After a night full of PR’s, stunning performances, and several surprises, Edison girls track and field ended the 2010 season with an unbeatable atmo-sphere of team spirit, some unforgettable memories, and several girls moving onto CIF. great job Chargers!

control over everything from making invitations to figur-ing out the theme and deco-rations under the guidance of Mr. Strachan and Ms. Man-grello. Being a part of Prom Committee myself, I expe-rienced the organized chaos that ensued as we tried to figure out the theme, make the Prom commercial for the

Winter Assembly, and visit sites for next year’s Prom. As Prom got closer and clos-er, more pressure was built upon Prom Committee to fin-ish making 800 invitations, tons of posters, organizing the nominations for Prom King and Queen, picking the tiaras and crowns and more. trying to meet at lunch and tutorial everyday, unforget-

table experience for everyone!Prom so it would be an un-forgettable experience for everyone! then…….it was here! Hundreds of Chargers got ready, filled party bus-ses, took thousands of pic-tures and arrived at Marconi Museum to have the time of their lives. A chocolate fon-due fountain satisfied the hungry, while karaoke amused couples waiting to get their pictures taken. Vari-ous blackjack and card tables filled the stage outside along with chairs and tables with groups of students buzzing with gossip. Even an artist was present, diligently cre-ating portraits of whoever was patient enough to sit still. overall, Prom went ac-cording to plan as a night of excitement for many Edison students. Nobody can deny that Prom will remain a dis-tinct memory of high school for all those who attended!
