This is the great-grandson of Alonzo & Joslynn Smith. Say Hello to Master Amare Nicolas Taiwo. He is 4 years old. His birthday is on June 13. Next year Amare will be going to Kindergarten. He likes riding his bike, playing with his dog BoBo and riding in his Pa-Pa’s truck. He does not like getting up in the morning.

Daniel Smith, Jr. or “DJ” as he is affectionately known, is the 9-year old grandson of Alonzo and Joslynn Smith of Columbia, SC. He is an Honor Roll student at DeKalb Elementary School of the Arts where he will be majoring in Drama and Band as a rising 4th grader. He has over 4 years of playing tackle and flag football. As the Quarterback, last year he led his flag football team to a championship win. No teams were able to score any points against them during the entire season. As the Quarterback of his tackle football team, he passed for 5 touchdowns and ran 9 touchdowns. DJ hopes to play in the NFL one day!

Amaya Smith is the 12-year-old granddaughter of Alonzo and Joslynn Smith of Columbia, SC. She is an Honor Roll student and a member of Junior Beta Club. Over the years she has participated in Tae Kwon Do and has obtained an advanced brown belt. She eventually ventured into gymnastics where she competed up to Level 6. She has amassed 30+ medals throughout her 4 years of competing. She is currently a dance and visual arts student who will be attending DeKalb High School of Performing Arts in the fall. She plans to become an Architect.

Ten years ago, the world was introduced to Myles Eugene Raines, Grandson of Marvin Raines ’63.

At 10 years old, Myles is busier than ever. Having started his education in the District of Columbia Public school system, Myles is currently enrolled in the KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) Public Charter School. In August, he will be a fifth grader and is a section leader in the KIPP: Smilow Campus choir. He is also a strong anchor/news caster with the school’s Lab Media Club.

During the summer of 2019, Myles attended Creative Minds Summer Camp and was recommended to participate in the Junior National Society for Black Engineers. For five years, Myles was an eager student of Korean Martial Arts at the Kuk Sool Won training facility and has reached the Red Belt with a brown stripe level.

He always enjoys spending time with his family including long car rides with his dad, Yoga with his Aunt Tee, and hot dogs and cheese toast with his Nini and Pop-Pop.

Cameron Scott McFadden is a rising 7th grader at Longleaf Middle School where he participates in the ZooBot (Zoological and Botanical Studies) Magnet Program. With his perseverance and dedication he maintained the programs challenging academic and conduct requirements, which allowed him to make the 6th

grade honor roll, and gain acceptance into the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program for the upcoming school year. Cameron successfully earned his Brown belt in karate. He has also been an active Boy Scout this year and will spend a week at Camp Barstow where he will be earning various survival skills badges. Cameron's favorite subject is history, especially Greek Mythology. He is a huge Japanese Anime fan, enjoys playing Fortnite and has a new interest in classic cars. He is a wonderful and fun big brother and cousin to Blakely and Hayden.

Blakely skillfully mastered walking (at 10 months old) and is working on developing her language skills. She loves to laugh, run, climb, snuggle, playing outside and gold fish. There isn't a fresh fruit that Blakely doesn't like, especially bananas. She will turn 2 years old September 1. Her favorite movie is Moana, in which she can re-enact the entire thing, including the musical score! She loves her granddaddy and Ya-Ya!

Hayden Rose Boxill is a rising 4th grader at Apex Elementary School! This will be her second year in the Gifted and Talented Program with an emphasis in English and Language Arts. This year Hayden earned two "Cougar with Character" awards for Perseverance and Good Judgement. Hayden has been an active Girl Scout for the last 2 years and will participate in a bridging ceremony to a Junior level next year. During the 2018-2019 school year she earned Girl Scout badges in tent camping, cooking, STEM, engineering, philanthropy, creating an animal habitat, and hiking. Hayden is going into her second season as a member of an intramural soccer team. She is truly an outdoor kind of girl. She loves going to the pool, anything involving science, space and Greek mythology. Her goal is to one day work as a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) with the FBI or CIA.

THE HAWES FAMILY - Submitted by Delores Parks ‘66, BANAA, VP.

It is with pride and joy that I share with you a family milestone for the Hawes Family. It is the graduation of my cousin, Joseph Daniel Hawes who received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Howard University. He graduated cum laude and will be attending Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey this fall. His grandmother, my sister-cousin Dr. Alyce Hawes, my daughter, Alsie and I traveled together on “a girls trip” from Atlanta to DC. We wanted to witness the beauty of what being part of a supportive, nurturing and rigorous family can produce and to enjoy a little relaxation.

We arrived in DC Friday afternoon and spent the evening enjoying a delicious family meal at Vapiano Restaurant in Chinatown. On Saturday, May 11th we attended the Howard University graduation and commencement ceremony. It was incredible to experience alongside thousands of other Black family members and friends celebrating the achievements of the brilliant young people with so much to offer our communities. We later attended a graduation celebration with family and friends hosted by the graduate's Aunt in Manassas, VA with good food and good folks. We had a most enjoyable weekend in DC.

Editor’s Comments

This was a very difficult edition for me to complete. Earlier this summer, I had an unusual stomach condition, then I suffered from a back and neck injury. As a result, there was a signifiant delay in completing this edition of the

Panther. It has been almost 6 years since I started the quest to create a newsletter that would be a tool for Alumni to keep in touch with each other and learn of the progress of various BANAA programs. Recently, it seems many Alumni have lost interest in contributing to this part of the Boggs legacy. With this issue, I pass the torch to someone with fire who will take on the responsibility of continuing the publication. I will provide any technical assistance needed and suggest future Newsletters might focus on Greek affiliations, volunteer and/or church activities and travel experiences of our Alumni. Thank you for your support. It has been an honor to contribute to continuing the legacy of Boggs Academy.
