From the Chief Executive Officer

ebruary is one of our favorite months as we host a full calendar of events. They bring a lot of opportunities for me to

meet lovers of WHRO and for our fans to meet the staff.

One of my most treasured events is The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee. Succedaneum, Autochthonous Appoggiatura…how would you fare if you had to spell these words on television? Well, our champion spellers can tackle these tongue twisters, and many other challenging words, during the ninth annual live broadcast of The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee, from the WHRO studios, Saturday, February 20. Tune in on WHRO-TV or stream the event at whro.org/spellingbee The first place winner will have all of his or her travel expenses paid by The Virginian-Pilot to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

On Sunday, February 28, we again host the Strolling Supper. This year our guest chef is Julie Ann Sageer, aka Chef Julie Tabouli. Julie’s life has nearly revolved around food and family her entire life. Whether it was her family’s restaurant, their own kitchen, one of her relative’s kitchens or sharing specialty dishes with the neighbors, one thing was constant; there was always lots of family and lots of great food around. So join us, along with Coastal Virginia Magazine’s Platinum Plate Award winners, from 4 - 7 pm at the Renaissance Portsmouth Waterfront Hotel. Get your tickets at whro.org/strollingsupper

While we’re in the mood to celebrate, don’t forget the Out of the Box concert series, featuring local bands at the Sandler Center every Wednesday from 7 - 9, through March 2. Admission is free and Paul Shugrue will be broadcasting Out of the Box live from the concert.

While these local events will keep you entertained, we also offer programming to keep you informed – programming that you can’t enjoy anywhere else. Among this month’s highlights are:

The Black Panthers: Vanguard of The Revolution, a feature-length documentary which explores the Black Panther Party and its significance to the broader American culture; Grammy award winning composer and singer, Carole King, on American Masters; and more of the Peabody Award winning investigative reporting on Reveal, which airs on WHRV.Also, Barbara Hamm Lee moderates another in our series, Race: Let’s Talk About It, during a Town Hall meeting on February 4 at the Fort Monroe Theater in Hampton.

Here’s one last word for you: Pococurante (pō-kō-kyu̇-u̇ran-tē): Indifferent, non- chalant. Something that would never describe WHRO public media.

Happy Leap Year!

merica in the 1960’s looked very different than the country we live in today, and yet many of the major social challenges facing the nation then

would seem all too familiar given current events. Almost two decades of war in Vietnam weighed on the American people, and class divide and racial tension were at boiling points as the civil rights movement was gaining national attention. Race riots happened frequently in major cities across the nation. While some portions of society were pushing to “Give Peace A Chance”, others were fighting desperately for equality.

It was in the city of Oakland, California, in 1966, that one group of African American citizens decided to walk the streets armed in order to monitor the behavior of police officers and challenge police brutality. The images and stories sound like they could describe Ferguson, Missouri last year, but instead they showed America 50 years ago. It was there on the streets of Oakland that the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was born. A new revolutionary culture was emerging across the nation and it sought to drastically transform the status quo. The Black Panther Party would, for a short time, put itself at the vanguard of that change.

The Black Panthers: Vanguard of The Revolution is the first feature-length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its significance to the broader American culture, its cultural and political awakening for African-American people, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police, FBI informants, journalists, white supporters and detractors, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it.

Featuring Kathleen Cleaver, Jamal Joseph, and dozens of others, this new film by Independent Lens is an essential history and a vibrant chronicle of this pivotal movement that gave rise to a new revolutionary culture in America.

“Stanley Nelson is one of our greatest chroniclers of American movements for justice and social change,” said Lois Vossen, Independent Lens executive producer. “From the ill-fated People’s Temple to the idealistic young volunteers of Freedom Summer, from the Native American uprising at Wounded Knee to the Black Panther movement, he brings these incendiary, game-changing movements to vivid life in a way that combines clear-eyed analysis with riveting, edge-of-your-seat storytelling.”

The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution premieres on Independent Lens Tuesday, February 16 at 9:00 pm on WHRO TV15.

Vocal Sound of Jazz turns 37!

Vocal Sound of Jazz began airing on WHRO (now WHRV-FM) on January, 4 1980. Originally a 30 minute program that aired on Friday evenings, the program expanded to the current 60 minute format and moved to Saturday evenings during the 90s. It was also aired over WUOM in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a five-year period in the late 1980s. Produced and hosted by Jack Frieden since its premiere broadcast, the program has always attempted to spotlight both jazz vocal music’s post 1950s history, as well as the new singers and songs that will continue to play an increasingly prominent role in the music’s future. Whom do we thank for this delightful musical coincidence? Apollo? The Muse Eurtepe? Perhaps Saint Cecilia? Whoever is responsible, when two of the greatest violinists ever known are born on the same day, it is with worth celebrating. Fritz Kreisler was born in Austria on February 2, 1875; Jascha Heifetz was born on February 2nd, 1901 in Lithuania. Join us as we celebrate their joint birthday this month.

54 Years YoungCelebrating February 29

He surely delivered an appropriate bon mot when his birthday was acknowledged. After all, composer, gourmand and wit Gioacchino Rossini was born on February 29, 1792 - a leap year baby. By a simple tally of years, that was 224 years ago. By the leap year calendar, the “Swan of Pesaro” is only 54. By whatever count, his music is still bubbly and infectious, which we will again confirm on his birthday.

HRO will host the 2016 The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 20, as more

than 70 of the area’s finest middle school spellers compete for this year’s title. The Bee will be broadcast live from WHRO’s studio at 2:00 pm and you can watch all the action by tuning in to WHRO-TV or going online to whro.org/spellingbee

This year marks the ninth year WHRO will partner with The Virginian-Pilot to hold a regional spelling bee. Throughout southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, public schools, independent schools and home school associations have all held local school bees and will send their winners to WHRO.

It takes a crew of nearly 80, including staff from almost every department at WHRO, The Virginian-Pilot employees and reporters - and a host of WHRO volunteers - to organize the event. WHRO-FM’s Raymond Jones will once again serve as pronouncer and the Bee’s broadcast sponsor is Thomas Nelson Community College.

The first, second and third place winners will receive trophies from The Virginian-Pilot. The Virginian-Pilot will also pay the first place winner’s travel expenses for a trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. WHRO will present the first place winner with an Apple Ipad®.

If you miss the live broadcast of The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on February 20, you can stream it later at whro.org/spellingbee

he American South is like no place else in the country – or in the world. Its singular history, people, culture and landscape have infused the region with a proud heritage and a wealth

of stores that can only be told by its own.

Reel South is a new anthology series that highlights the masterful Southern tradition of storytelling, exploring the unique voices and experiences of its people. Tune into WHRO TV15 Thursday evenings at 9:30 pm for this delightful, charming and poignant new series.

Episode 1: The Last Barn Dance, is a story about farming, fragility, and a fight to save the family business. Randy Lewis struggles to save his dairy farm in the piedmont region of North Carolina, where dozens of family-owned dairies have disappeared. While keeping the business afloat, Randy also hosts one of the only true old-time barn dances left in the region, keeping alive the tradition and the community that loves it.

Everyone can help someone

s the number of retiring baby boomers grows, stories abound about meaningful opportunities for giving

back to the community. While retirees are, and will continue to be, a tremendous resource for doing good in our community of Hampton Roads, there is another tremendous resource that shares these same qualities. I am speaking of our retired veterans.

You may not know that our community is home to almost 60,000 retired military. Though some have transitioned into civilian careers, many, having already completed their careers, are in retirement. Veterans are among the most highly trained, disciplined and skilled individuals an organization could hope to find. What’s more, Veterans have a demonstrated interest in giving of their time and ability, with the result that many of our veterans have re-engaged for good.

Last December, The Flagship, a military newspaper and the Military Newspapers of Virginia, honored 10 local veterans at the fifth annual Still Serving: Military Veterans Awards.

I had the pleasure of meeting one of the honorees, Freddie Cano, whose big personality brightens any room. Freddie is a retired Chief Navy Counselor who served for over 20 years. Some time ago, he was diagnosed with stage IV cancer and depended almost entirely on the support of his wife and many others at Portsmouth Naval Hospital to keep him alive. Today he feels it is his, “time to give back and pay it forward,” and he sure is busy. He drives cancer patients to appointments for Lee’s Friends, a local nonprofit; he speaks to classes at Old Dominion University; and works with Naval Hospital support groups; even the doctors there refer their patients to him.

WHRO has many veterans who also generously donate their time, from answering phones to working on special projects. Lance Shavers, a retired Chief Petty Officer, is the chair of WHRO’s Community Advisory Board. He is also a volunteer Advocate with the Virginia Beach Court Appointed Special Advocate. When asked why he volunteers, Lance offers, “My volunteerism is rooted in two personal convictions; a sense of service

cultivated by over 26 years of military service, and a desire to help improve the lives of people in our community.

As veteran Ronald Regan said, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.”

Let’s Eat

any Virginians are proud to be from the South - where the tea is sweet and the accents are sweeter;

Summer starts in April; front porches are wide; macaroni and cheese is a vegetable; pecan pie is a staple; “Y’all” is the only proper pronoun; chicken is fried, everything is “darlin’” and someone is always getting their heart blessed.

The south is also home to some of the best comfort foods possible. Just in time for the premier of a brand-new television program called, Reel South (airing February 4th at 9:30pm), we are featuring a Southern favorite: Buttermilk Fried Chicken!

Marinating the chicken in buttermilk makes the meat moist and flavorful. Chicken breasts cook faster than other parts; so fry them separately in the last batch. For fried chicken with less fat and fewer calories, remove the skin before marinating.

• 2 cups low-fat buttermilk• Coarse salt• 3 teaspoons cayenne pepper• 2 whole chickens (2-½ to 3 pounds each) each cut into 10 serving pieces (wings, thighs, drumsticks, and 4 breast pieces)• 3 cups all-purpose flour• 2 cups vegetable oil

1. In each of two 1-gallon resealable plastic bags, combine 1 cup buttermilk, 1/2 tablespoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon cayenne, and half the chicken pieces. Shake to coat; refrigerate up to 2 days.

2. In a large, shallow bowl, whisk flour with 2 tablespoons salt and remaining 2 teaspoons cayenne. Dredge chicken pieces, one at a time, in mixture, shaking off excess.

3. In a 12-inch cast-iron skillet, heat oil to 350° on a deep-fry thermometer (or until a pinch of flour sizzles when dropped in the oil).

4. Carefully add 1/3 of the chicken. Cook 10 minutes; turn chicken with tongs. Cook until golden brown, juices run clear, and internal temperature is 165°, about 10 minutes more. Transfer to a rack to drain. Season with salt.

5. Return oil temperature to 350°. Repeat with remaining chicken.

hose who know me will not be surprised to learn my first word was “dog.” Not mama, not dada…dog.

As much as I am sure I was bombarded, as many babies are, by cooing and urging to say mama and dada, I was most likely also influenced by my environment. The same principle can be applied to children learning to read.

Toddlers’ worlds are full of words that they see on a daily basis; toys, cereal boxes, commercials, street signs, McDonalds, peanut butter, to name a few. They also see many of these same items on TV, out shopping with a parent, or at school. According to a PBS NewsHour report, these are examples of what is called “environmental print and they are often some of the first words children learn.” Environmental print can be a very useful tool to create meaningful experiences and help support a child’s first efforts to read.

The concept of environmental print first appeared in the 80’s, and since then

By Nancy RoganDirector of Community [email protected]

research has documented it advantages. The Dimensions of Early Learning reports, “60% of the 3-year-olds and 80% of 5-year-olds could read environmental print in its context of cereal boxes, toothpaste cartons, traffic signs, and soft drink logos.” So when you think about it, even breakfast can be an easy opportunity to support a child’s reading by simply pointing to items on the table, for example a juice or cereal container, and asking what it is.

There are many other fun and simple activities to support reading development. Cut out, or take pictures of, the names of children’s favorite foods from the actual container and past the pictures on flash cards. Or when running errands or out for a walk, ask about the words on streets signs and familiar restaurants.

I know my parents would have loved my first intelligible babble be mama or dada, but they were happy I was talking. Parents of toddlers, don’t be alarmed the first words you child recognizes are Oreo or Cap’n Crunch, they

are starting to read by connecting words to meaning. This is a crucial foundation for success in school and the future.

oretta Lynn is known as the Queen of Country Music. A self-taught guitarist and songwriter, Lynn was one of the most distinctive performers in Nashville in the 1960s and 1970s. She wrote her own

songs, many of which tackled boundary-pushing topics drawn from her own life experiences as a wife and mother. Coal Miner’s Daughter, Fist City and Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind) are just three of 16 country No. 1 singles.

Lynn has been inducted into more music Halls of Fame than any female recording artist, including The Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and was the first woman to be named the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year in 1972. She has won four Grammy Awards and sold more than 45 million records worldwide.

Explore the country legend’s hard-fought road to stardom. From her Appalachian roots to the Oscar-winning biopic Coal Miner’s Daughter, Loretta Lynn struggled to balance family and her music career and is still going strong over 50 years later. Tune in Friday, March 4 at 9:00 pm on WHRO TV15.

and video series, we bring the work of these talented artists to viewers at home on WHRO-TV 15.

The Scene is a WHRO Arts initiative. Born out of the fact that Hampton Roads is culturally and artistically one of the richest places on the East Coast, it felt like it was the perfect time to tell the stories that make this area unique.

As with every project of this magnitude that a non-profit organization undertakes, certain financing & grants had to be secured. So our team at WHRO set out to make a trailer to
