Scans

Viability/ Dating Scan (7-12 weeks) This scan is particularly important if you have had vaginal bleeding or suspect an ectopic pregnancy. It is also available to anyone who is worried or needs reassurance. Early pregnancy scans are normally performed by scanning across the tummy. If your pregnancy is very early, your womb is tilted back or if you are overweight, a scan through the vagina may be necessary. We can determine the number of embryos present, the presence of a heartbeat and we can confirm how many weeks of pregnancy you are. We date your pregnancy. If there is any internal bleeding, it is also possible to detect this.

Nuchal Translucency Scan (11-13 weeks)

This is the first time when the fetal structures can be seen in greater detail. The head, brain, heart, spine, abdomen, bladder and limbs can be seen and we will also look at the placenta, amniotic fluid and umbilical cord.

The nuchal fold or nuchal translucency (skin and fluid at the back of the baby’s neck) will be measured. We also measure the nasal bone recording its length. We take a blood sample from your arm for the measurement of two hormones Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG) and Pregnancy Associated Protein A (PAPP A). From this we calculate your risk of fetal abnormalities such as Down’s syndrome. This full result is available within 1 hour of the scan. If the result indicates you are high risk we will discuss with you whether you want to have a Chorion Villous Sample (CVS) or amniocentesis to investigate further. Both these procedures involve a needle being put in your tummy with a risk of miscarriage of 1%.

Reassurance Scan (14-22 weeks)

Scans are not usually necessary at this stage of pregnancy. Women who may have experienced bleeding or have felt unwell may feel the need to be assessed. We will check the head, abdominal and leg length. We will also assess the location of the placenta, amniotic fluid and umbilical cord.

Page 6: The Birth Company Brochure 2013 - Private Pregnancy€¦ · The Birth Company Brochure 2013. Dr Cathy Roberts Dr Cathy Roberts is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with special skills

Sexing/Gender Scan (16 weeks onwards)

Our sexing scans are highly reliable but may be more difficult if the baby is in an unfavourable position, or if the women is overweight.

Anomaly Scan (21-23 weeks)

This is a thorough scan to check abnormalities of the baby’s heart, brain, spine, bowel and limbs. Although this scan can never completely guarantee that every abnormality is detected, it gives a very strong reassurance. We also check the placenta, amniotic fluid and umbilical cord.

Well being/Growth Scan (23-40 weeks)

This scan measures the baby’s head, abdomen and limbs and estimates the baby’s weight at that time. We also check the movement of the baby, amniotic fluid and position of the placenta.

3D and 4D scans (26-32 weeks)

3D/4D scans show the baby in 3 dimensions. It is an opportunity for parents to get a glimpse of the baby’s face before birth. It is ideally performed between 26-32 weeks. 4D simply means a 3D scan with the added dimension of time. An initial fetal growth scan checks the baby’s health. The scan can last up to 45 minutes to get the best images of your baby. You will also receive a DVD recording of up to 20 minutes of the scan in 2D and 4D as well as 3D scan pictures.

iBabyScan

The Birth Company offers iBabyScan with all pregnancy ultrasound scans at no extra cost. An exciting way to view and share your scan online, iBabyScan enables you to watch your video anytime you like. Send to loved ones via email, or share on social sites such as Facebook. Insured patients

It is not uncommon for us to see patients who are covered under their medical insurance for all or part of their care. We are happy to deal with insurance companies directly, provided you give us full details of policy numbers, authorisation or claim numbers, and claim forms if they are required. Insured clients from overseas need to have a Letter of Guarantee for payment before treatment, confirming that they have insurance cover and up to what level. However, it is important to understand that shortfalls for consultants’ fees are very common and can sometimes be substantial. If you are unsure about the level up to which your policy covers you, please speak directly to your insurance company to find this out. Or we will do our best to advise you. We will always check to make sure you have adequate cover before treatment can begin.

If an appointment has to be cancelled

When booking an appointment we will ask for your contact numbers, particularly a mobile number, just in case we have to cancel an appointment at short notice. The only reason that Dr Gibb or Dr Roberts may not be able to attend a consultation would be because they have to attend to a delivery. We will always try to inform you of this with good notice, but sometimes this can cause problems, particularly for clients who have made a long journey. If this does happen and we are unable to schedule an appointment at a later time in the day, we will do our best to arrange an appointment at an alternative clinic that is of the same high standard, if you agree to this.
