ER Message As we begin a new year in Elkdom I want to first of all thank our outgoing ER, Bob Sce, lodge officers and committees for their outstanding service to our Lodge. Bob has served three out of the last four years as ER of our Lodge. Secondly, I wish to express my appreciation to our membership for honoring me with the privilege to serve as your ER. I believe the Salisbury Elks Lodge is one of the best in the state. I have watched this lodge grow from 150 members to over 450. Some have chosen to be in-volved in our many charitable works, others have become lodge offices and some have even gone on to state and national positions. Too many times, however, we never see many of these folks again. This year I would like to see a stop in our lack of retention of members. This job falls upon each and everyone of us, not just the sponsors of those members. Mem-bership is the lifeblood of this or-ganization. If you missed the ER Ball, you missed a great party. Chad Sain was terrific as usual, and ku-dos to Mike and Becky Sifford for the fantastic meal. Congratulations to James Caldwell—Elk of the Year, Julie Caldwell, Officer of the Year, and

thoughts and prayers. God bless America and God bless Elkdom. Fraternally, Bill Brown , ER

especially to Becky Sifford, Out-standing Citizen of the Year, for all of her voluntary charitable works with cancer patients and Relay for Life, a most deserving award. Just a reminder that our next DD clinic will be on Sun-day, April 18th in Mount Airy. Attendance is required by the ER, Leading Knight, Secretary, and Chairman of the Trustees. A sign up sheet for those wishing to at-tend will be posted in the lounge. Remember to keep our service men and women in your

Secretary’s Message

I greatly appreciate the opportunity to serve the Lodge again as Secretary. While a chal-lenging job particularly in these extraordinary times, I look forward to getting a little closer to the mem-bership. Back when I was Secre-tary, I knew every name on our list although I may never have met them personally. Now and after only two years absent from that position, there are so many who I haven't a clue who they are. Look-ing through this huge list of mem-bers we will have dropped by March 31, it's amazing how many of them are very new to our Order and rarely, if ever came back to the lodge after being initiated. That's very unfortunate and I surely wish there was better way for all of us to get to know each other more easily. I want to go ahead an apologize upfront for being late on getting out membership cards and any other membership related activity that needs to be done by April 1. March is the busiest month of the year for a Secretary and given the transition from one Secretary to another, it will be impossible to get everything done in as timely a manner as it should. In any event, thanks to so many who have paid there dues promptly already. That's v e r y e n c o u r a g i n g . However and once I get a little ahead of the game, I do plan on spending a good deal of time work-ing on membership recruitment. I don't know who the new member-ship chair will be but I look for-ward to helping us rebound from this horrendous year that we have had. To drop nearly 90 members for non-payment is just mindbog-gling and I can't help but think some of these losses could have been avoided. The Secretary position, whether one has the time or not,

plays a key role in keeping the member and the Lodge connected. I hope I'll be able to fulfill those i m p o r t a n t d e m a n d s . Finally, I continue to add data to www.elkshistory.org albeit at much slower rate then before. Please take a look at it as I feel confident that you will be amazed at our glorious past. While I'm not one to live in the past, I do believe that we can learn a few things that still would be applicable in today's world. I hope you will too! Mike Jones, Secretary

Beginning in April the River Park Committee will begin contacting all current yearly site leases to discuss the signing of new leases for the 2010 season. There will be some changes to the lease agreements this year, and these will be discussed individually, prior to the signing of each new lease. The River park Committee and the Lodge will do everything it can to make this work as smoothly as possible.

Julie Caldwell, Officer of the Year

James Caldwell, Elk of the Year

Allison Holshouser, Special Commendation Award

Bernie MacDonald, Special Commendation Award

Becky Sifford, Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award

Award winners not pic-tured are John Salonen, Chair-man of the Veterans Service Committee, Steve Vail, Chair-man of the River Park Commit-tee, and Andy Jenkins, who has volunteered his time over the years cooking for our Poker Runs and Luaus. The one thing that all of these recipients have in common is that they all have worked tire-lessly for our lodge and our com-munity. Every Monday at 7:00 p.m. Refresh-ments available along with great fun

This year’s league went down to the last game to decide the winner this season. Heading into the last week, The Ball Bust-ers had a 6 point lead over the second place, The Ace Holes. The Ace Holes won the first game by 80 pins and the second game by 17 pins, giving them a comfort-able 107 pin lead going into the last game. But the Ball Busters fought back in game 3 and won by 5 pins giving them the last 2 points and 1st place. Congratula-tion to the 1st place team: Michelle Rivers, Deb Tomei, Mark Tomei, and Mike Mauney. I would also like to congratulate the 2nd place team, Lori Mann, Allen Riggs, Kevin Frey, and Ted Bryant. Thanks to both teams for such an exciting finish. The last week was the league’s fun day, where we had a

different format for each game. The first game was what’s called a no-tap game. Simply put, if you knock 9 pins on your first ball you will get credit for a strike. I guess Jim Oliver did not understand that, as he proceeded to throw 12 natural strikes in the first game for perfect 300 game. Nice bowling Jim!!! This year’s standouts are as fol-lows: Men high game, series, and average all belong to Jim Oliver with a high series of 705, and high game of 276, and high average of 212. As for the Ladies, the same applies, Julie Caldwell holds the high series 539, high game 244, and high average of 160. In the handicap category, game and series for men belongs to Randy Higdon, with a 748 handi-cap series and a 276 handicap game. For the Ladies high handi-cap game belongs to Barbara Can-nito 274, and high handicap series is held by Marcie Puckett with a 705. Great bowling everyone. The awards banquet will be a steak dinner held on April 24th, at the lodge. Guests may attend cost $10 per person. Sign-up sheet will be at the lodge.
