Pre-Apprentice Training ProgramForty years ago, apprentices without any experience were trained right on the job site. This meant that signatory contractors were paying a lot of money for low-productivity apprentices to learn as they earn.

At BACNJ, our objective is to enable our clients to prosper by providing the most productive, cost-effective, quality-minded workforce available anywhere. So we changed the way we train.

With the BACNJ Pre-Apprentice Training Program, our apprentices are ready to hit the ground running at your job site. They come to you with the knowledge, skills and ability to be productive members of your team, getting the job done faster and saving you money.

For eight hours a day, five days a week, over the course of 12 full weeks, students receive all hands-on training. This provides a tremendous opportunity for participants to become familiar with conditions that an apprentice may encounter on an actual project site. Students learn:

By implementing the latest technology and products into our everyday craft, we are producing

state-of-the-art structures, with speed and efficiency.

New Products:Rain ScReen WallS — cladding systems (typically terra cotta, calcium silicate, natural stone or porcelain tile) attached to the substrate with a metal rail support system over an air/water/

vapor barrier.

adheRed VeneeR — a lightweight architectural non-load bearing product that is produced by wet-cast blending of cementitious material, lightweight and other aggregates, iron oxide pigments and admixtures designed to be applied via cementitious mortar to a backing

surface.

inSulated concRete FoRmS (icF) — a reinforced, cast-in place concrete wall system where the formwork (foam insulation — typically expanded polystyrene) remains as a permanent

element of the assembly.

aeRated autoclaVed concRete (aac) — a lightweight cellular concrete formed by a chemical reaction between finely ground aggregate, lime, Portland Cement, aluminum powder

and water provides superior energy efficiency, fire resistance and acoustical properties.

New techNologies:aiR BaRRieRS — should be designed, built, and imagined as a system. Performance depends not only on the individual materials comprising the system, but the efficient connection between the various components. This makes good training the key to successful air barrier installation.

hyBRid maSonRy/Steel StRuctuReS — a structural system that utilizes reinforced masonry walls with a framed structure.

SelF conSolidating gRout (Scg) — a dry pre-blended grout specifically designed to be highly fluid without segregation of the constituents. It is used to bond together adjacent masonry units, fill bond beams and all areas around steel reinforcement in the cores of the

masonry assemblage without mechanical consolidation or reconsolidation.

American Masonry Corporation Benefits from Union Labor

Dr. Martin Luther King School

BACNJ continually evolves for the betterment of signatory contractors and members

Development and training are top priorities for the contractors and union workforce of New Jersey. Unions are committed to creating cost-effective, productive work places through innovative craft training and installation procedures of the newest products to enter the construction market. Apprenticeship programs continue to attract and produce highly-skilled workers available only to those that are signatories.

In this industry, especially during these times, it is imperative that the work force is also fully trained in regards to health and safety. Unions are committed to state-of-the-art safety training for members, which includes OSHA 30-hour safety courses. As a result we see improved morale, increased productivity, decreased costs and unequaled performance.

Our company also finds that as a union contractor, we save administration costs. The Union administers the benefit package contribution of all of their members, so our union employees will receive excellent healthcare coverage, pension, annuity and much more. Thanks to the pool of qualified workers the Union has available, we also realize significant cost savings by not having to recruit and interview non-union employees.

“Working in conjunction with BACNJ has become more of a team effort over the years. American Masonry Corporation has been a union masonry contractor for over 10 years and, due to the many advantages, we can never envision our company becoming a non-union contractor.” Ron Atzert, PresidentAmerican Masonry CorporationCinnaminson, NJ

Goodwill In The Community...BAC/ADC of New Jersey Charity Golf Outing Every year the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union of New Jersey host an annual charity golf outing to benefit the Diabetes Foundation and the Joseph P. DiRenzo Scholarship Fund. BAC Locals 2, 4 and 5 in conjunction with the National Building Trades are honored to support Dollars Against Diabetes, DAD’S Day. The organization is dedicated to the needs of all diabetic communities throughout the nation. Through the Joseph P. DiRenzo Scholarship Fund, the Union awards scholarships to the children of the organization’s membership.

This annual Masonry Design/Build Competition, sponsored by Masonry Contractors of New Jersey and co-sponsored by the BAC ADC of New Jersey Labor Management Fund, is held at NJIT College of Architecture and Design in Newark, NJ. Each year the architectural students are given the task to design a project (a Boys and Girls Club, a Montessori School, a Market Place, etc.) and then build, in only 2 days, a mock up of a critical masonry element.

Over 100 students, divided into eight teams, are required to research the site and explore various masonry materials using unit masonry as the primary building materials in their

designs. Students then select one design from each team and collaborate with masonry craftworkers to complete the project design and order masonry materials. All masonry materials are donated by members of Masonry Contractors of New Jersey.

BAC/ADC craftworkers teach the students how to spread mortar and lay brick, as well as mentor them in proper installation techniques. By working directly with craftworkers, the students gain a better understanding of the masonry trade – a lesson we believe the students will remember throughout their careers. As a result of the dedication of the Association and the BACNJ Labor Management Fund’s sponsorship of the program, the competition has become part of the second year architectural students’ curriculum.

Masonry Contractors of New Jersey, headquartered in Bordentown, is a non-profit association of masonry businesses dedicated to promoting union masonry construction throughout the State of New Jersey. For more information, visit our website at www.mcofnj.org.

Demanding An Equal Playing FieldNo one who works hard every day and plays by the rules should be left behind in our economy. Part of our efforts on behalf of all BACNJ members is to demand our elected officials create an environment that enables us to compete on a level playing field. Although hiring undocumented workers is illegal, the law is rarely enforced. Three out of four foreigners that enter the United States do so illegally and half are paid under the table, so they don’t pay taxes.

Regardless of what changes we as a Union may make, we will never be able to compete with the rates of unskilled workers that illegally enter our country. Our country needs to break its addiction to cheap labor and products and realize that these things do come at a great cost. Decent wages paid to American citizens make our communities more prosperous because our consumer dollars help support local businesses and our tax dollars ensure good public safety and other services.

Joe Canal’s Discount Liquor Store Built With Union Labor

Joe Canal’s Liquor Store

BACNJ adds value to the construction process

I believe in doing things right the first time. I prefer to work with well-established companies and generally find union workers to be experienced craftsmen who take pride in what they create.

I start every project with my customers in mind. That’s the thinking that has made Joe Canal’s on Fire Road in Egg Harbor Township the area’s largest discount liquor store serving Atlantic City and its suburbs.

When we were ready to break ground on a similar yet larger warehouse-style liquor store adjacent to Lowe’s Home Improvements on the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township, I chose to partner with the most qualified workforce in the masonry industry – members of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union.

The 16,800-square-foot building features split face concrete block, a popular masonry material for many applications. Commercial construction often relies on this versatile building material because it is fire-resistant and low maintenance. However, it is a very porous material and if not properly installed can lead to costly leaks, water damage and repairs. Quality work is not a gamble I’m willing to take. Masonry installed correctly should last a lifetime. I have found that masons trained by the BACNJ go above and beyond normal building practices to add value to the construction process.

“In my experience I have found union companies to be more diligent and the workforces more experienced. Members of the BACNJ don’t want to cut corners. They are neat and clean in the way they work and create buildings that are nice to look at. Their dedication to their craft is obvious in the finished result.” Stuart Stromfeld, Owner, Developer and Contractor of Joe Canal’s Liquor Stores

Ocean City Home Bank Always Banks on Union Labor

Ocean City Home Bank Branch Office

BACNJ adds value to the construction process

Founded in 1887, Ocean City Home Bank is the area’s leading financial banking institution in both performance and community involvement. We currently operate ten full-service branches in Atlantic and Cape May Counties and continue to expand while remaining true to our original vision of exceptional products and services.

In 2009, Ocean City Home Bank built and opened a branch banking office at 317 South Pitney Road in Galloway Township, New Jersey. We chose ICON Construction, a Union contractor, as our construction partner for this project.

Ocean City Home Bank has a long history of using Union labor including the New Jersey Union of Bricklayers. In addition to our Galloway office, Union contractors have completed work on our Ocean City and Linwood branches, which are both two story buildings with brick facades, as well as stonework on our Ventnor, Egg Harbor Township and Mays Landing branch locations.

The Union contractors we work with enjoy excellent reputations for skilled talent, quality installations and safe work environments. Most importantly, they deliver consistent results from one project to the next. That’s important to Ocean City Home Bank, because each branch office is an extension of our company’s brand image. Knowing what to expect from our construction team keeps our projects running smoothly. Proven results are important to any successful business. Time and time again, Union labor has delivered the workmanship and attention to detail that we expect of seasoned professionals.

“Ocean City Home Bank is the ‘Bank People Trust’ and the exterior appearance of our branch offices is very important. It should project safety and soundness and professionalism. I think that the exterior stonework is not just an ornamental flair, but also helps us project our image.” Steven E. Brady President and CEO
