Towns name new fire chiefs

Two veteran firefighters werenamed to the top spots in theirrespective departments this week.
In Belleville, Brian Loranger, a
firefighter for the city for 23 years,including several years as its cap-tain, assistant fire chief and inter-im fire chief, was appointed per-manent fire chief by the BellevilleCity Council at its regular Aug. 20meeting.
Loranger, a longtime area resi-
dent who has operated a chiroprac-tic practice with his wife, Anna,in the city of Belleville since 1986,replaces former Fire Chief LeeGrant, who resigned in February.
After his appointment, hereceived high praise from citycouncil members, other firefightersand city residents attending thecouncil meeting.
Lorangers salary will be based
on the number of fire runs inBelleville in a given year. Unlikethe firefighters who report to him,Loranger is paid for every run,regardless of whether he partici-pates in the run. He estimated thathis annual salary would be from$5,000 to $6,000.

Van Buren Townshipofficials approved $330,000in funding for three proj-ects at their regular boardmeeting on Aug. 21.
The first project repre-sents an early phase of amajor construction projectfor the township, including
a newly designed inter-section for the corner ofBelleville and Ecorse roads,and a new sanitary sewerand water main in thatarea. This $7.5 million roadreconstruction project willfeature an all-new intersec-tion, with Michigan Leftturns and access to theparallel service drives fromEcorse Road, not Belleville
Road.In the Aug. 21 meeting,
Director of Public WorksTom MacDonald proposeda new water main andsanitary sewer lines alongEcorse Road. The newwater main will run westfrom Belleville Road toBeck Road, and just to theeast of Belleville Road.The new sanitary sewer
line will run along EcorseRoad from Beck to MortonTaylor Road.
The cost of the construc-tion engineering services,provided by township engi-neering consultant WadeTrim, is $305,000. Thiswill include constructionstaking, constructionobservation by Wade Trim,preparation of drawings,
contract administrationand project closeout. Theconstruction portion of thewater main project will bean additional $2.3 million,excluding contingency.Supervisor Paul White saidof the overall project, Weall agree its 20 years pastdue.
