From the Very Reverend Gerwyn Capon Dean & Vicar of Llandaff Dear Friends,
The Bell is always printed as a double issue for July and August - it tends to give the feeling that we have come to the end of one cycle of editions and in September, when the academic terms begin again, we start a new series. I’d like to pay tribute to David Llewellyn who is the editor of the magazine – his tireless effort to keep filled the pages of The Bell is a big task and not always easy – he’s been a hardworking and well organised person, ideal for the role. Both David and I had discussions over the past few months trying to address the fact that the readership of The Bell is steadily falling. With more and more people going on line to see what’s on at the Cathedral through our web site, it seems as if the printed word in the parish magazine is not so necessary as once it was. David hinted two years ago that he was ready to hand the baton of editorship to someone else and I canvassed then for interest. No one seemed keen then to take it on. In fairness to David, it is an issue that now needs to be resolved.
I think that we could relaunch a Cathedral magazine quarterly if we found a new editor willing to undertake this important ministry of communication and promotion for the Cathedral. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the right person. But it needs commitment of course. If you are that person, please contact either David or me for a conversation – we’d love to hear from you. It may be that the whole concept of a monthly parish magazine has had its day. I’d be grateful for anyone’s thoughts on the matter. If we cannot get a volunteer to respond, we will print the last issue in December this year.
The PCC has been considering very carefully the issue of financial stewardship – the Cathedral’s stewardship is constantly and prayerfully considered by the Chapter and PCC; over the last few years it has been proved that we are carefully managing our budgets; I believe firmly that God has been faithful in blessing our efforts to reach not only balanced budgets but in achieving slight surpluses - our collections for oversees aid have been at record highs. But the stewardship campaign will be an initiative to help us address our personal financial response as members of
-

the Cathedral’s community, as disciples of Jesus Christ, in the furtherance of the ministry of the Cathedral itself. In October, we will be launching an initiative that will help us see how our giving helps the Cathedral in its vital role as a spiritual hub for this community and those whom we will never know. It is a fact that our financial giving to the Cathedral enables us to be a spiritual resource to the parish, the city, the diocese, every school child that visits us, every pilgrim, and tourist. We have a powerful role to play for each anxious and grieving person who visits simply to sit in the nave and weep for someone they love, weeping often for themselves, leaving lit candles and prayer intensions, all of which we carry to God in trust. The Cathedral enables a huge number of people to encounter the living God who loves and forgives us all. This is a serious issue, it is what your gift sustains - our love for God and the cares He has, demands a response from us that includes what we give to His church.
We must also address sooner rather than later, what we want to see for the Cathedral in 2, 5, 10 years. It is now time to begin a strategic plan for its mission and this will involve us raising money to further that ministry; adapting our ancillary buildings so that we can accommodate visitors, enabling better formational activities and community outreach; recognising that the recovery of the Cathedral music must continue through investment, providing opportunities for all.
If we love God and love what we have here in the Cathedral, we must place our resources in such a way as to enable the mission of God to grow and thrive here.
As I write these words, we are looking forward immensely to welcoming our new bishop. June Osborne will be consecrated on the 15th July and enthroned here in her Cathedral on the 22nd July. Pray for her. It is an important milestone in the life of this diocese. Bishop June will be a successor to Bishop Teilo who founded the first community here in the sixth century. It reminds us that, yes, we are in a long unbroken line of apostolic witness; but that witness continues because it is an active charism of the Holy Spirit. In this generation we too must play our part and express the faith in which we stand. The holy ground in which we have been planted matters!
Yours in God’s love,
Gerwyn

CATHEDRAL PARISH NEWS
THE CATHEDRAL SHOP
We have our usual selection of gifts suitable for all occasions; also a wide range of Welsh items, all at reasonable prices. The jewellery choice is wide ranging and attractive. We continue to stock a large choice of cards for various occasions – birthday greetings, sympathy, get well messages.
The Pitkin Spinner has been restocked recently, and includes some new titles - Two books (“Jane Austen" and "The World of Jane Austen") already look at the writer's life and times, and now, to mark the 200th Anniversary of her death in 1817, these are joined by "Jane Austen - inside her novels" looking at the books themselves. "Standing Stones" looks at these amazing features of our landscape in the light of recent Archaeology, and in the "Secrets and Scandals" series the Medieval and Tudor periods are joined by the Victorian.
New biographies include "Alan Turing", the mathematician and computer scientist whose Enigma machine helped the Allies win the 2nd World War, and restocked is "Edward Burne-Jones", the Pre-Raphaelite artist of whose work the Cathedral is fortunate to have a wonderful example in the "Six Days of Creation" panels, the altarpiece in the Dyfrig Chapel. All the Pitkin Books are packed with illustrations and at £6 make lovely small gifts - with titles to interest almost everyone, from gardens to steam engines, kings and queens to the lives of farmers and fishermen.
We appreciate your continued support. Mary Madsen & Pam Barlow
LLANDAFF PARISH MOTHERS’ UNION

GUILD OF ST TEILO
The last meeting before the Autumn will be our strawberry tea. This will be a social afternoon where members will have time to chat and enjoy refreshments.
We have had a most successful and enjoyable year with quite a few new members. The Guild is an informal and friendly group with a good mix of speakers: light-hearted and serious, but always informative.
We meet in the Parish Hall at 2pm on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month and always welcome new members. Our annual subscription is £8 but if you just visit (or try us out) we charge £2. We end our meetings with tea, biscuits and a chat. So why not join us when our new session begins on the 11th September. We look forward to seeing old and new members alike.

CHRISTIAN AID - 2017
To our amazement and delight, Christian Aid Week 2017 has even exceeded last year's record-breaking total. At the time of writing the amount raised is a magnificent £12,313.00, and to this we are able to add a very generous one-off anonymous donation of £4,000, bringing the overall total to £16,313.00. Over half of this was Gift Aided, so Christian Aid will benefit by over £18,000.
The success of Christian Aid Week is indeed a remarkable testament to the generosity of our community and to its commitment to follow Christ's commandment to care for the needy and the dispossessed. Visitors to the Cathedral have observed our evident concern for the world - indeed, one visitor was so impressed by the displays we put up for Christian Aid Week that she presented us with a fine box of chocolates as a reward! We raffled it at the War On Want Lunch and it raised £30.00.
A full breakdown of the amounts raised by each of the activities in Christian Aid Week will follow once the final contributions are received, but meantime a huge debt of gratitude is due for the contributions, the work, the encouragement and the prayers of everyone involved - thank you all so much.

THE FRIENDS OF LLANDAFF CATHEDRAL
THE ANNUAL FESTIVAL - Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July 2017
As indicated last month, the Annual Festival of the Friends has been expanded and extended, and will be held over two days - Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July.
As usual, it will start with a guided tour. This year, it will look at the work in the Cathedral of two important Victorian sculptors – Henry Hugh Armstead (1828-1905), who contributed much to the great Victorian Restoration, and Sir William Goscombe John (1860-1952), who was born in Canton, in his youth sang in the choir of the Cathedral and who, in the course of his very successful career, was commissioned to produce a number of monuments in the Cathedral and throughout Cardiff. To join the tour, please assemble at the west end of the Nave at 2.15 p.m.
At 3.15 p.m., the Annual General Meeting will now take place in the Prebendal House, not the Nave as previously advertised. This will be followed, without a break, at approx. 3.45 p.m., by the Annual Lecture. This will be given by Mr Ian Fell, one-time Director of Education and Interpretation at the National Museum of Wales, who will be talking about “St George, Sins, Mercies & Dancing with Death: The Medieval Wall Paintings of St Cadoc’s Llancarfan”. These paintings constitute the most important historical discovery in South Wales in recent years, and are of national importance. Mr Fell hopes to be able to illustrate his talk with a power-point presentation.
Following the Lecture, light refreshments will be served in the Prebendal House. Partakers are invited to make a donation to the cost at the counter.
At 5.15 p.m. there will be Choral Evensong. During this service, the cross and candlesticks, presented by Dr Donald Buttress, former Cathedral Architect, for use in the Illtyd Chapel, will be dedicated.
At 6.45 p.m., there will be a Drinks Reception and Dinner at St Michael’s Centre (formerly College). Tickets, priced at £25 a head, must be
-

purchased in advance from Linda Quinn, 74, Pencisely Road, Cardiff CF51DH (Applications should be accompanied by a stamped addressed envelope)
On Sunday, at 11 a.m. there will be a Festival Sung Eucharist, which will particularly mark the work of the Friends. During the service, the Friends’ medallion will be presented to one of the boys in the Choir.
You do not have to be a member of the Friends to attend all or just a part of the Festival. All are welcome! However, if you are not a member and are interested in supporting the Cathedral and its preservation, perhaps it is about time that you joined. Ordinary membership costs only a minimum of £10 per annum, and there are other types of membership to suit your needs. Further information can be obtained from the Friends’ stand at the rear of the Cathedral, or from Sir Donald Walters, 120, Cyncoed Road, Cardiff CF23 6BL (Telephone: 029 20753166)

FRIENDS ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE - Friday, October 6th 2017
A very warm welcome awaits us in Monmouthshire, where we shall be visiting four churches followed by the Cathedral for Choral Evensong.
With a not too early start at 9.45am, from the Cathedral Green, we will travel to the first of two 'Friendless Churches,' - Llanfair Kilgeddin with rich Arts and Crafts furnishings. There is an interesting wall decoration in sgrafitto illustrating the Benedicite of the Mass and showing the Usk valley. Later in the day we will visit Llangwm Uchaf, restored in the 19th century by Seddon as a setting for its screen and loft, including green men! Both these churches are now supported by the Friends of Friendless Churches and one is in a field, so please bring suitable shoes.
According to Simon Jenkins in his book on Welsh churches, our second stop, Betws Newydd, contains 'a remarkable work of craftsmanship, a rood screen with stairs, loft and tympanum, amongst the most complete such arrangements anywhere'.
There will then be free time to choose your own lunch arrangements in Usk, where there are a number of cafes and pubs. We will then enjoy a tour of St Mary's Priory, Usk, and a short recital on the organ which originated at Llandaff Cathedral.
-
15
Our pilgrimage will conclude at St Woolos Cathedral, Newport, for a tour and cup of tea before Choral Evensong at 7p.m. We will then leave for Llandaff.
It is probable that few of us have seen many of these churches before, and an interesting day awaits. Due to the locations, a small executive coach will be used, so places are limited. If you are interested, please book now.
Tickets will be available at the Friends Annual Festival at £30 each and afterwards from Linda Quinn, 74 Pencisely Road, Cardiff CF5 1DH (S.A.E. please}. Cheques payable to the Friends of Llandaff Cathedral. Please note the ticket price includes the transport costs and donations.

THE CLERESTORY SHAFT PROJECT
During 2017 and early 2018 the Nave, Choir and West Front of the cathedral will be undergoing a programme of repair work, funded by the Welsh Government’s Historic Environment Agency, Cadw, and the Friends of Llandaff Cathedral.
Background to the Project
The Bathstone ‘detached’ shafts at
clerestory level are splitting due to
internal corrosion of iron cramps used in the re-construction of 1859 to tie the
shafts to the surrounding stonework.
When iron corrodes it expands considerably, with enough force to split
stone. It is likely that moisture got into the
stone following the bomb damage in 1941 (when the clerestory was left exposed to
the elements until the current roof was
installed in 1953), and this moisture has accelerated corrosion of the iron. The location of the clerestory shafts
-
16
Each of the 84 Nave and 12 West Front internal detached shafts will be carefully dismantled to remove the embedded ironwork and repair the stonework. New stainless steel cramps and dowels will be inserted, and the shaft stones will be repaired and reinstated in their original positions. The surrounding stonework will have a light clean to remove the worst excesses of carbon encrustation.
Ancillary Work The cost of scaffolding the entire Nave and Choir is considerable, and it will make sense to do as much work as possible while the scaffold is in place.
The clerestory windows will be repaired and cleaned as part of the project. The leaded windows are secured to horizontal iron tie bars. During the 1950s restoration the tie bars were attached to brass spigots which were embedded into notches in the reveals of the windows with hard mortar. Most of these fixing spigots are now loose. This causes the windows to rattle with wind pressure and even when the organ is played, which in turn leads to cracking of the glass.
Stainless steel angle sections will be installed to hold the existing brass spigots against the stone reveals, to avoid dismantling the windows (a very expensive process). The brackets will be toned-down to make them less noticeable – the recipe involves a mixture of gold size, pure turpentine and burnt umber pigment. The plain glazing also needs a thorough clean inside and out, and this will be done carefully with cotton swabs.
The dowel hole and cramp inside a shaft
A prototype of the glazing bracket
-
17
The 1953 hardwood ceiling is stained in places from past roof leaks, and these stains will be also removed in areas that can be accessed. Render will also be repaired and re-decorated.
Training Initiative The project includes a training programme of five three-week training blocks for trainees who are considering a career in building conservation.
The Programme Scaffolds will be erected in phases between June and November 2017 and from January to April 2018, with breaks for key events and festivals in the cathedral. The work will mean some disruption to visitor access and services at times, and this will be communicated to visitors and the local community throughout the project.

In order to carry on the work of the Church in and through this Cathedral Parish, not least the upkeep of this magnificent building, we rely substantially on your generous giving. A significant proportion of our funds is raised through Christian Stewardship among our regular worshippers.
If you are a tax payer, we invite you to give by means of GiftDirect or another form of Gift Aided donation. This means we can claim the tax back and so your donation increases by 25%. We are enormously grateful to all who do this as an expression of their gratitude for God’s great goodness. For more information, please contact the
