From the Reverend Canon Graham Holcombe Residentiary Canon Dear Friends,

    REMEMBRANCE

“Remember, Remember the Fifth of November Gunpowder treason and plot”

On the fifth of November the country celebrates a festival which is by now part of Folklore. Thousands of fireworks will be let off, bonfires will be built and sausages and jacket potatoes will be enjoyed. It’s an annual bit of folklore now, yet away back in 1605 the ‘Gunpowder Plot’ made a stunning impact on the life of the nation. It changed the course of history, dashed the Roman Catholic hopes of toleration and ensured bitterness and persecution for two centuries ahead. Even the Book of Common Prayer was affected in that a special service was appointed for that anniversary each year.

On Remembrance Sunday, we commemorate two other events that made a stunning impact upon our nation and upon the world, namely the two World Wars of 1914-18 and 1939-1945. These conflicts certainly changed the whole course of history, twice in a generation. Those who served in these wars, those who lost relatives, those who experienced the terrors and despair of bombings, death and rationing or were refugees still identify with the moving ceremonies at the Cenotaph, the shower of crimson poppies that fall in the Albert Hall and St David’s Hall – each petal symbolizing a life destroyed. All thoughts expressed by the heart rending verse by Lawrence Binyon

‘At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them’

The feelings of a new generation are probably much more akin to those we all have about November 5th. Remembrance Sunday is a parade, a story about events passing into folklore. Yet the Falklands Campaign is still recent and that, along with other recent conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland continue to be remembered for their effects on national life as well as many anniversaries commemorating earlier conflicts such as Jutland, the Battle of the Somme, Passchendaele and in 2018 the centenary of the ending of the First World War.

Many people visit the Welsh Regiment Chapel (David Chapel) before Remembrance Sunday to sit there and remember. In every Eucharist we ‘Do this in remembrance’ of Jesus. A remembrance service which ought to be alive to us.

The Eucharist is not just a piece of folklore and the service is not just a memorial service. In the expressive words of the hymn by William Bright:

‘And having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we here spread forth to thee that only offering perfect in thine eyes, the one true, pure, immortal sacrifice.’

By making effective now something that happened days, months, years ago, and in the case of the Eucharist over 2000 years ago, we are taking part in an act of both remembrance and healing. In our midst we share the remembrance and share the Bread and Wine, the living person is here with us.

So we pay honour to the sacrifice and pains and tears and the losses, but affirm that by uniting them with the sacrifice and the pain and loss of Christ himself in remembrance of his death and passion, we may come to a fuller new life, a resurrection in freedom and love.

At this remembrance-tide when we also celebrate All Saints, All Souls and Remembrance Sunday, the prayer of the church is:

‘Eternal Rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual Light shine upon them’

or, as in the Paradisum of Faure’s Requiem:

‘May the angels receive you in Paradise. At your coming may the martyrs receive you, and bring you into the Holy City, Jerusalem. There may the choir of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, once a beggar, may you have eternal rest’

    Amen

    CATHEDRAL PARISH NEWS

    LLANDAFF PARISH MOTHERS’ UNION

We have two speakers this month. On 6th November Mrs Pat Turner, a long standing member of the M.U., is giving a talk and on 20th November Mrs Chris Webb is giving an Advent talk.

After the successful day in Gloucester last year, a trip to Bath has been arranged for the 30th November, which will provide an opportunity to visit the many interesting venues in Bath and do some timely Christmas shopping. Unfortunately there is no early Evensong at the Abbey.

We leave the Green at 9.30am returning home about 4.30pm. the cost of an ‘en-suite’ coach including gratuities is £14. There are sure to be seats on the coach for those who are not members of the M.U. If you are interested please contact Margaret Bethell (029 2056 4722) or Barbara Treharne (029 2056 4655).

    THE NEW CHARITIES TABLE

This is the "Low" season for Christian Aid, so in the interim, the table has been replaced by a new Charities table. This celebrates our Parish and Cathedral's work to alleviate poverty and suffering in our local community and beyond, with the emphasis on our efforts as a community to care for the poor and dispossessed.

Do take a look at the table if you have a moment - you may be surprised at the number of ongoing projects, and indeed you may know of more which we could include. If so, please let us know; we'd be delighted to add those to the display. And...you may be interested to know that the "tablecloth" is produced in Hebron by the only remaining textile factory in the Holy Land still making this traditional design.

    THE CATHEDRAL SHOP

We have available in the shop a selection of Christmas Cards, Advent calendars, small and large, Advent candles, Christmas cribs again large and small. A wide variety of Jewellery, inexpensive and expensive, which would make suitable Christmas gifts. Additionally, we have our usual range of other items, stocking fillers etc.

The shop has a variety of books for Advent reading, as well as a new selection of spiritual classics, and a number of books for children retelling the Christmas story in English and Welsh. The colourful Pitkin spinner has just been restocked with a wide range of titles (mostly at £6) including some with particular relevance to the Cathedral - Edward Burne-Jones, Cathedral Music etc. These make very acceptable small gifts, and with such a wide range of titles, there is something to appeal to everyone.

Among the books of Welsh interest is a new edition of "A Child's Christmas in Wales" with delightful new illustrations. Do have a look and see the selection of books and calendars which would be suitable for Christmas presents.

Please, why not stop after the service on Sundays and take a look at what is available. We might just surprise you.

    Mary Madsen & Pam Barlow

    GUILD OF ST TEILO

Our speaker on the 13th of November is Mrs. Toni Evans who will show us how to wear scarves in a variety of designs. On the 27th of November Mrs. Kath MacDonald will be telling us about her time teaching in China. Both these afternoons should be very interesting.

We meet every 2nd and 4th Monday in the Parish Hall from 2pm to 3.45pm, ending our meetings with a cup of tea and a chat. Our group is friendly and informal; visitors and potential newcomers are always made very welcome.

See you at our meetings in November. Daphne Townsend (Chairperson) 029 2056 6447

    CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2017

To our delight, Christian Aid Week 2017 has even exceeded last year's record-breaking total. The final amount came to £16,554.86 - what an amazing result!! As promised in September's Bell , here is the breakdown of the amount raised by the various activities during CA Week:

Door-to-door collection 7717.21 Llandaff City School fundraising 1907.45 Retiring Collections 14/5/17 1604.41 Envelopes at the Cathedral 623.19 War on Want Lunch 288.10 Sunday School sale 174.76 Busy Bees Nursery 122.47 Ruth Watt's Pupils' concert 75.00 Individual collection @ Howells School 29.05 Collecting boxes in High Street 13.22

This gives a total of £12,554.86, to which can be added a one-off anonymous donation of £4.000, giving the GRAND TOTAL of £16,554.86

It's always good to know how the money might be used, so here are some examples: £16,000 would buy:

a meal for 6,620 refugees, cooking stoves for 330 families, a big fridge for 58 community kitchens, or a combination of any of these - and others - to meet local needs.

And it doesn't end there! We can also add in Gift Aid on £10,673.70, (worth c. £2,500) and £350.00 given direct to Christian Aid via CAF accounts, so the total benefit to CA will be well over £19,000.

You can see what an effect your generosity will have for some of the 64 million refugees in the world. This was a wonderful effort, and many, many thanks are due to everyone who participated and contributed: thank you all so much for your support.

And..... don't forget that all collectors and fundraisers are invited to a Celebration Evensong and Tea Party on Sunday 26th November. This is not a fundraising event, but is our thank you for all that you do to make Christian Aid Week such a success. We very much hope you will be able to join us for this celebration and we look forward to seeing you there.

Sue Smith and the Christian Aid Team.

CHORAL SOCIETY’S SPECIAL CONCERT OF CHRISTMAS MUSIC

On Saturday 2nd December at 7.30pm, the Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society will perform a selection of music for Christmastide by Handel and Bach. The programme will feature choruses from Handel's Messiah and the first 3 parts of Bach's Christmas Oratorio - both works amongst the most joyous of the composers' output. The soloists will include Ellen Williams (Soprano) and Dominic Neville (Tenor). David Lewis will lead the orchestra.

The concert takes place in Llandaff Cathedral on the Eve of Advent Sunday. It promises to be an uplifting start to the Church's New Year and to our preparations for Christmas, so we very much hope you will be able to join us for this special occasion. Tickets will be available in advance from members of the choir, from Garlands in High Street Llandaff, or from the choir’s website at www.llandaffcathedralchoralsociety.org.uk.

FRIENDS OF LLANDAFF CATHEDRAL Report on Friends Open Doors Days - 15-16 September 2017

293 people participated in the various events organised by the Friends of the Cathedral for Open Doors Llandaff in September. A further 63 people came just to look around, with comments such as 'We used to live on the Green and haven't been back in 30 years' and 'I've lived here all my life and never been inside.' and 'It was really great to hear the recital.'

Opportunities to look closer at the organ, climb the bell tower and look at the archives were all popular and the guided tour resulted in people asking if they could come again.

The schools drawing event was very well received, with teachers saying how nice it was for the children to be able to walk around informally and draw pictures of what they liked best. All four primary schools in the Parish came this year, and all said they would like to come again next year.

Many people came as a result of reading the leaflets delivered by Parishioners - many thanks for this help to you all.

Open Doors is an excellent opportunity for outreach, welcoming people who we may otherwise never see.

    LLANDAFF CITY SCHOOL Castle Life!

Recently children and staff from both Year Two classes visited Cardiff Castle as part of their termly topic of Castles and Knights. Sixty very excited children boarded the coach for our trip to the castle.

The workshops provided an insight into life within a medieval castle including how a Knight lived and how castles were built. All the children were engaged with the Knight from the very

start of our session. We were ordered to be “SILENT!!!” and then marched to the basement for an hour of interaction and fun. Our host explained the daily life for a Knight and the courtiers. The children and adults were given a demonstration of the full armour, were allowed to hold the weapons and play with the castle and knights puppets.

The children then went on a guided tour of Cardiff castle where they all listened attentively to the facts and stories about each room in the castle. One of the most exciting rooms we visited was the nursery, the children loved looking at the fairytale paintings around the room; some children even spotted the hidden prince on the wall.

We all got a chance to explore the other parts of the castle and some of us were brave enough to climb all the way up to the top of the keep! Another highlight of the trip was finding out about the wild birds that live in the castle.

A great day was had by all! Vicky Smith

‘THE STILL WATERS’ - OF BEAUTY

Carmarthenshire is the most beautiful county in Wales. Before you pour your criticism upon me I accept that you, reader, believes that your own county is such. But there are beautiful places in my own county; one such is Llyn Llech Owen. We can look upon it anew, through the eyes of our minds; a place of beauty.

The blue waters lie quietly and silently, magically; and on its shore grow abundant grass and colourful flowers; at one end arise noble trees as if competing for the sun with branches like arms outstretched, casting their shadow across the water.

The whole, a picture of BEAUTY.

This tranquil lake, these ‘still waters’, have remained a picture of beauty for me throughout my life. Wherever I have been, in whatever circumstances I have found myself, whether in the storms of life, amongst grief, loss and disappointments, or when the sun shone with success, recalling the still beautiful lake helped me to keep my feet firmly on the ground.

In an age where our minds and hearts are now bombarded with tragedies and conflicts, new nuclear threats, hurricanes of destruction, sudden earthquakes, migration of millions, we are paralysed with fear and anxiety. World leaders have little to offer but further toil and tears, sanctions which lead to further threats and conflicts. It is little wonder that the greatest scientist of our day Stephen Hawkins, from the confines of his wheelchair, warns that to survive, mankind will inevitably have to find a way away from our earth to another planet or its equivalent in the universe where life can exist.

Meanwhile where do we go? To whom shall we turn, for calmness of mind and hope of life. As Christians we have been given promises that the God of Creation, our Heavenly Father, has a concern for us and in His Word states that He will lead us to ‘The still waters’. (Ps:23)

As a doctor I have seen hundreds of people from all over the country, from all walks of life. I met them amidst their anxieties and depressions, met them in their crises and failures, their loss of faith, their fear of living and dying, in their destructive conflicts with others. I saw powerful men and women bent double by family troubles, work, school, the office.

Indeed life is not easy. One must, said Tillich, have courage to live. Yes even to exist. It is essential and therapeutic for us to think positively. Healing comes through focusing upon the beautiful, truth and goodness. Keats stated that: ‘Truth is beauty ,/ Beauty is truth, / That is all you know / And all you need to know’.

‘The still waters’ is essential for successful living, to stand and stare at the beautiful amidst the ugliness of our daily living. John Ruskin reminded us that it was not a waste of time to stand in awe before the beautiful.

‘Whatsoever things are beautiful’, said St Paul, ‘Think on these things’. (Phillippians 4:8)

During the last war, a little girl evacuee, from London came to live with us. When she saw the open fields and mountains, the flowers and streams, she asked my mother., ‘Whose beautiful park is this?’ My mother answered, ‘It is God’s beautiful park’. And the little girl asked ‘When does God close His park?’

We can be encouraged in knowing that God never closes His park of beauty, nor has He yet impaired our ability to appreciate the beautiful. O that we would continue to gaze on the tranquil lake, ‘the still waters’ of beauty in His presence.

For “He leadeth me beside the still waters”, to the beautiful. David Enoch
