The Beginnings of Hinduism
The mixing of Aryan culture and the cultures of the local people led to the development of
Hinduism. Hindus believe in a single spiritual power, brahman. Hindu gods are different
expressions of brahman. The most important gods are Brahma, the Creator; Vishnu, the
Preserver; and Shiva, the Destroyer.

The Teachings of Hinduism
Hindus have texts, such as the Upanishads, which help them understand their religion. One of the
central ideas in Hinduism is reincarnation. This is the idea that after death, a person’s soul is
reborn in another body. A person’s actions in this life will determine the nature of the next life. The
duties of each person are known as dharma. One of the most important beliefs of Hinduism is the
concept of ahimsa, or nonviolence, which many Hindus believe extends to all living things.

The Practice of Hinduism
Hindus do not all practice their religion in the same way. Some practice the physical exercises
of yoga to free their souls. Others practice the yoga of selfless deeds or the yoga of devotion.
Hindus worship in temples and also at home, where they often honor a personal god of their
choosing.
