Thirteenth to First

Last Saturday saw Birkenhead’s marque Men’s Pairs tournament hit the greens. Thirty-two quality teams, superb catering, great prizemoney and greens playing nice. The greens are a truly refection of the dedication green keeper, Brendon Kelly, has towards providing exceptional greens. Saturday after four games of fourteen ends the top sixteen where found, with only three teams with four wins, David and Daniel Hood occupied the number one spot. Followed by Bowls New Zealand HP team Jamie Hill and Tony Grantham. Bir-kenhead’s very own Jimmy Heath and Daymon Pierson occupied the number three posi-tion. Six, two winners made the top sixteen, with Royal Oak’s James Gavin and Gavin Brown sneaking in at position sixteen. The bottom sixteen had its fair share of surprises and just showed how tough and even the competition was. Birkenhead’s most relaxed pair in recent memory Mark Rumble and Peter Nathan along with John O’Shea and Randall Watkins were joined in the Consolation by 2019 Champions Cup winners David Akaruru and Mark Hall. Sunday and it is all about win, win, win. Champions Cup first round saw Hill/Grantham almost make an early exit but managed to just pull in front to defeat Inglewood’s Steve Sabine / Graham Reive (11-10). Last year’s Champions Cup runner-ups Royal Oak’s Mar-tin Dixon / Mike Galloway dipped out to new comers Manurewa Cossie’s Roger Andrew/David Clark (11/15). In the all Birkenhead clash Jimmy Heath / Daymon Pierson came away the victors over Evan Thomas / Lionel drew (13-8). Howick’s Neil Fisher / Bryan Chapman proved too strong for Takapuna’s Graham Skellern / Ray Skogland (13-9), Skogland retiring sick in the following Champions Cup B Flight” game. Number one qualifi-er Daniel and David Hood went down to Gavin Brown / James Gavin (11-16). Neville Hill / Brendon Kelly showed their dominance defeating Northcote’s Greg Taylor / Brent Malcolm (17-6). Birkenhead Life member Keith Burgess accompanied by his nephew Mark Bur-gess exited going down to New Lynn’s Sean Hird / Mt Albert’s Peter Thorne, (19-7). Previous Champions Cup winner (2013) Henderson’s Tony Garelja with fellow club mate Billy Fulton off the front made light work of the Bruce McClintock / Colin Rogan combination (17-5). Round two and Andrew/Clark sent Chapman / Fisher packing (14-6). Hill / Kelly equally domi-nate over Brown / Gavin (17-7). No love lost as Hird / Thorne ousted Hill / Grantham (16-14). Heath/Pierson magic run and Birkenhead’s hopes of a Birken-head champion came to an end going down (8-16) to Fulton/Garelja. Semis Andrew / Clark’s run con-tinued defeating Hill / Kelly (17-7) while the other semi was a tighter affair with Hird / Thorne coming away the victor by a solitary shot over Fulton / Garelja (10-9). The final, Andrew / Clark versus Hird / Thorne and what a final, nip and tuck all the way. All locked up after seven ends of the fourteen (7-7) and again at ten ends (9-9). But the eleventh end Andrew / Clark picked up the highest end in the game, four shots (13-9). Solitary points went Hird / Thorne’s way over the next two ends (13-11). Going into the last Hird / Thorne needed a two to just force the extra end, it wasn’t to be with Andrew / Clark taking one shot from the final end to win (14-11) and claim the $1,500 first prize and adding two new names on the Champions Cup. Qualifying thirteenth in Saturday’s play, the win caped off a wonderful weekend for the tournament virgins with Clark complement-ing on the tournament organisation and quality of the greens in his prize-giving speech. It was runner-up Thorne’s first tournament back at Birkenhead since the passing of close friend Danny O’Connor. Throne commenting “Danny must have been on my shoulder dur-ing the weekend”. The final itself would be one of the finest in the tournament’s history with some great bowls played and mutual respect for each other throughout the final. The tournament will celebrate ten years in February 2021 and Carpet Mill’s William Beare confirmed during the prize-giving Carpet Mill Archers Road continued commitment to the tournament for 2021.

Exceeding Expectations

Due to a number of circumstance Birkenhead’s Waitangi Day tournament didn’t get off the ground in 2019 and there was a real possibility of it dropping out of the Club’s calendar altogether. A tournament that has been going for almost fifty years had to be saved. Eve-ryone gave their time for free as the Club pulled together, collecting items and services to be raffled and auctioned off and organising the total event. Oscar Tyler and the Birkenhead RSA were the headline partners both contributing sub-stantial amounts to the cause, being Harbour Hospice and in particular the North Shore Hospice. The team entries where down with only eighteen teams but enough to run it successfully, we weren’t going to beat the $10,000 raise a couple of years back with thirty two teams, but a target of $5,000 seemed achievable if we worked hard at it. It was a sunny day and with the early 8.30am start saw a few players not looking their best, blurry eyed from the previous night in the Club. Play got underway not long after the scheduled 8.30am start time as all settled in for a day of four games, morning tea and lunch included. Bowlers and non-bowlers mixing on the green, some dressed up for the occasion adding another dimension to play. The fourth game came around and the prizes dished out. The town hall clock wasn’t on offer only blank envelopes containing various amounts of cash and the lucky winners did know what they had won until they opened their envelope. The “Best Dressed Team” went to IQ’s (Debbie, Jan, Fay and Diana) for their colourful get up. With “Fire” (Logan, Chris, Bevan and Carl) taking our second place in their fire t-shirts compete with life sized BA equipment on them. Bowling wise there were three four winners, but only two prizes. Second place went to Pt Chev with four wins and twenty-six ends, while first place went to Team Indigenous, four wins and in impressive thirty-two ends. Raffles sold exceptionally well, with the 4 litre rum bottle donated by Colin and Lynn Bar-row selling exceptionally well. There was good interest in the auction items which included

the likes of a top of the range Holden Arcadia LTZV for a weekend donated by Gilltrap North Shore, Twelve people to go back stage for the filming of The Crowd Goes Wild do-nated from Hospice itself. Birkenhead’s Parton Shane Price ran the auction and what an auction is was. Not only achieving great prices for the items auctioned but a truly entertain-ing event, a total professional, Shane has been booked for next year, Saturday 6 February 2021. President John Croy announced at the end of the day that at least $5,000 had been raised, but a final telly up still had to be made. Friday the figure was revised and confirmed at a little over $6.500 for Harbour Hospice for use at North shore in O’Shea Terrace, not too bad for only eighteen teams. This Friday 5pm at the Club Hospice will be presented the money raised. Come along and share in the sense of satisfaction this brings all.

With the first of the Summer of Bowls endorsed tournaments behind us this coming week-end the $6,500 Good Home Birkenhead Women’s Pairs gets underway Saturday morn-ing. This year we are privileged to have in the field of 64 women, none other than the win-ner of seven world titles and current World Bowls Dual Singles Champion, Karen Murphy. Along with the lucky lady that gets to partner up with Murphy for the two days there are also the Skips that get to chat with Murphy in the course of play. First up against Murphy and co is a late team replacement, Mairangi Bay’s Theresa Rogers / Sheryl Wellington. Round two and it’s the West Coast pairing Cobden’s Michelle Matheson / Hokitika’s Cathy Kempthrone. After lunch and a change of green Te Atatu Peninsula’s Robyn Rei-hana / Marion Hakaraia gets her chance followed, as the draw would have it, another Te Atatu Peninsula team Jacqueline Broderson / Lauren Mills. While those teams get to play against Murphy and co during the course of Saturday. The rest of the field is also busy trying to make the top eight for Sunday’s Champions draw, the bottom eight fight it out in the Consolation. an take on Rogers / Wellington, fresh from their clash with Murphy and co. On the furthest

New for 2020

From John Hindmarch’s initial idea and developed out to a weekend tournament the Bir-kenhead Power Play Pairs has been born. With $2,400 for first place out of a total prize pool of $5,000 it is certainly good prize money. Played over the weekend of 23-24 May will see sides of three teams of pairs battling it out in a playing format similar to Bowls North Harbour’s PPL. All culminating in the Elimination finals, Semi-finals’ and the Grand final on Sunday afternoon Limited to sixteen sides with sides made up of full or life members of the same club, no composite sides. Morning tea and lunch to the usual Birkenhead standard is included both days. Entry forms are available from the Club and the Club’s website. Entry confirmed upon re-ceiving both a completed entry form and full entry fee. Birkenhead Power Play Pairs is currently looking for a tournament partner to join Giltrap North Shore as joint platinum partner or a number of smaller gold, silver or bronze part-ners. Furthers details on the contact Emmie (ph: 0275 297297)
