WHY WALKING WORKS

• RESEARCH SHOWS YOU’RE LIKELY TO LIVE LONGER IF YOU WALK AT LEAST: 5.5 miles per week – Walking at a slow pace of 2 miles per hour can be enough to lower risks of things like heart attack, stroke, and heart failure by 31%.

• IF YOU WALK 10,000 STEPS YOU’VE GONE ABOUT: 5 miles – This is a good goal for overall health. Use a pedom-eter to count your steps and try to kick it up by at least 500 each week.

• BRISK WALKING COUNTS AS CARDIO EXERCISE: True – You don’t need any special equipment and you can do it practically anywhere.

• WALKING IS AS GOOD FOR YOUR HEART AS RUNNING: True, if you do enough of it. It turns out that brisk walk-ing is just as good when it comes to cutting your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes – as long as you do about twice as much of it.

• TO BOOST YOUR MOOD, TRY TAKING A WALK IN: A leafy, natural area. Scientists at Stanford University asked people to walk 90 minutes in either a woodsy area or an urban one. Those who strolled in nature had less activity in an area of the brain linked to depression.

• WALKING IS GOOD FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE TYPE-2 DIABETES BECAUSE: It lowers blood sugar levels, helps you lose weight, and helps your body use sugar. Exercise helps the hormone insulin get sugar out of your bloodstream and into your cells, where it can be used for energy.

• IF YOU HAVE ARTHRITIS, YOU SHOULD: Walk regularly for exercise. Your joint fluid moves around when you do, and that gets oxygen and nutrients to your joints and cartilage and helps prevent friction. It also strengthens your leg and core muscles.

• WALKING IS GOOD FOR YOUR BONES BECAUSE IT’S: Weight-bearing exercise. Activities that make you bear the weight of your own body against gravity are important because they stress your bones, and that leads to make more cells and become more solid.

• AS ALWAYS, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT WHAT’S BEST AND SAFE FOR YOU.

2018 CUBS/BREWERS BASEBALL GAME

This year our annual baseball game took place in Milwaukee, WI, at Miller Park Stadium. Sunday, April 8th was chilly but sunny, however, there was a forecast of snow for later in the day. Miller Park has a retractable roof, so this made weather conditions a no worry factor. The temperature inside all day was a comfortable 64 degrees and our seats were in an excellent position to home plate and third base side. We were also very close to all the concession stands and restrooms which is always a plus!

Along with a stop at McDonald’s in South Beloit for a quick breakfast and a stretch of the legs, we kept entertained on the bus with our drawing for prizes. Merry Shick won the grand prize of $25.00 to spend at the game and VIP hats were won by Kathryn Young and John Esposito.

This year our bus was considered a special needs bus, which enabled us to be dropped off outside the stadium doors for easy access and no walking. We were also picked up at this location after the game. Our VIP baseball fans with physical needs were most grateful.

Traffic leaving Miller Park is so much easier than leaving Wrigley Field in Chicago and it also gave us much more time for our dinner stop at Portillo’s. This restaurant choice is very popular with our VIP baseball travelers. On the way home we encountered snow just as we entered the Quad City area. We were so lucky not to have to drive through it all the way home. We saw a great game with the Cubs winning 3-0, a happy note for everyone! Our VIP members are looking forward to next year and America’s favorite pastime!

On Thursday, April 26th, 2018 the Moline Branch held a Grand Opening Celebration and Ribbon Cutting attended by the Quad City Chamber of Commerce and the Eldridge Chamber of Commerce. Each held a Ribbon Cutting to signify our relocation and opening of the new branch located at 3455 Avenue of the Cities, Moline. Moline’s mayor, Stephanie Acri was in attendance as well as CEO Darwin Kruse and his wife Terese. Employees from both the Moline and Davenport locations were on hand as well. Mayor Acri even commended Dorothy Burdick, VIP Club Coordinator for the Quad Cities, on her 59 years of service, starting with Uptown National Bank to present day First American State Bank.

MOLINE GRAND OPENING AND RIBBON CUTTING

Hors d’oeuvres, cake and punch were enjoyed by all of our bank customers who attended this won-derful event. Many compliments were received on the new branch and its updated décor. We saw many familiar faces, and welcomed many new ones, as we look forward to the future in our new home.

A big “THANK YOU” goes out to all who partici-pated in making this a memorable day.
