THE BEAT OF YOUR FEET

The Beat of Your Feet features award-winning British composer and music educationalist Paul Rissmann, who joins WASO as our first Guest Artist in Residence for Education Week. Paul is joined by Libby Hammer, one of Perth’s great jazz singers who also works with WASO as a presenter and Ben Northey, one of Australia's finest orchestral conductors and educators.

Headlining this 60-minute concert is Paul Rissmann's irresistible musical adventure based on Jason Chapman's book Stan and Mabel.

Stan and Mabel tells the story of two neglected animals - Stan (a dog) and Mabel (a cat) - who live in a tall tower block in the city.

Although their owners ignore them, Stan and Mabel find great comfort in the music played by the lady who lives downstairs.

But one day the music stops.

When Stan and Mabel go to investigate, they discover that their beloved neighbour has gone to Italy, to a competition to find the greatest orchestra in the world. In a flash, Mabel decides that they should follow in her footsteps and visit the famous La Scala opera house in Milan. They just need to find some friends to join their animal orchestra first!

And so their adventure begins – but what do you think will happen when the animals play in the competition?!

Benjamin NortheySince returning to Australia from Europe in 2006, Benjamin Northey has rapidly emerged as one of the nation’s leading musical figures. Since 2011, he has held the position of Associate Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and, in 2015, he became Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. He currently lives in Melbourne with his wife (the accomplished French Horn player Joanne Montesano) and their children.

Paul RissmannAs a concert presenter, Paul has worked with many leading orchestras in America, Australia, Europe, India, Malaysia and the Middle East. His career involves writing music, talking about music and inspiring others to make and perform their own music. Recent engagements include concerts with the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Valery Gergiev and the LSO in Trafalgar Square, Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia at the South Bank and a tour of India with Nicola Benedetti and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
