As we close into the end of the year there are still even more major events on the way, but one of them won’t be coming as soon as expected. Anthrax has been delayed due to a family member’s health until sometime in March, so all you heavy metal heads will just have to wait a little longer. But next week we have David Beckham of all people turning up to play soccer against a local team, the Indonesian All Stars, and then Djakarta Warehouse is back with a huge show at Senayan this year, which is the last rave party of the year. It will be an indoor/outdoor event that is sure to rock your socks. Comedy has hit the streets and bars of Jakarta in a big way recently with more shows in the Comedy Café, Malls and on the TV. That’s always a good laugh. And remember the biggest Sunset show and BBQ is on the back to Liquid Exchange next Sunday December 11. Phil Mimbimi is back on the grill and cooking up a gourmet BBQ storm for all you punters that enjoy and good feed and a great afternoon. We’ll see you there. Read about everything going on around town inside the What’s On and HereNow sections and have a great two weeks folks.

Selamat menikmati dua minggu anda.

With these varying stables of DJS she found her desire to play many different genres of music from house to progressive.

What happens if DJs Dennis Ferrer and Yousef play on the same decks? The answer could be found at Stadium last week. Yousef who is a DJ from London, performed first and played a solid deep house set. Partygoers who were the fans of them both started to fill the 4th floor early. After Yousef finished his set around 4am, then it was Dennis Ferrer’s turn. He took over the deck, and kept the crowd dancing around as much as himself. Both of these guys are top DJs and showed the Stadium crowd exactly why.

THe TRee oF LIFeThis film managed to win the Palme d’Or which pretty much means the French thought that this was the most amazing movie of the year. Well, I watched the film and although I do see why some people truly love a film like this, I also see how the other 90% of people think it’s the most bloated waste of time ever. Although the cinematography is beautiful, to be fair, this movie requires a lot of patience.

Terrence Malick, the director of the film, is known for his extremely abstract way of presenting his films to the audience and Tree of Life is 139 minutes of non-linear story telling that switches back and forth between the formation of the universe, a middle aged man, and most prominently, scenes from his childhood in suburban Texas.

The actors, namely Brad Pitt give an extremely heartfelt performance as a disciplinarian father figure that is juxtaposed against a very affectionate one that might be Oscar worthy if the film was just more palatable. The bottom line is while some of you might find this film to be ground-breaking work, most of our Beat readers will no doubt want to skip this one for something a little more enjoyable.

What music are you into at the moment? As always, I look for the latest & current stuff in terms of reggae music. The album that’s in my playlist for quite some time now is Sara Lugo’s “What about Love”. She’s a Reggae artist from Munich, Germany that brings quite a breath of fresh air to the culture. Her album is a must-listen-to collection where she combines many styles from soul, jazz & traditional ska. On the other hand, Stephen Marley’s Revelation & Bob Marley has been on my daily playlist.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?Haha, what’s interesting is that one of the first records I bought besides Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet was Nirvana’s Nevermind. My cousin and I chipped in for the album based on the album cover alone. A naked baby in a swimming pool reaching for a dollar bill, well we know how this album went and yes, I do have an ear for rock music. Have to keep my senses open, hehehe.

What is/are your all-time favorite albums? Why?Hmmm, I focus a lot on lyrics and wordplay. So I look up to many Hip-Hop MCs such as KRS-One & Rakim. But my favorite album of all time is Wu-Tang’s 36th Chamber, Nas’ Illmatic, Augustus Pablo’s King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown, Bob Marley’s Natty Dread & Survival.

No question Wu-tang’s 36th Chamber & Nas’ Illmatic are MCs at the top of their lyrical game. During the time these 2 albums dropped, I just recently arrived in NYC circa ‘93-’94, so it was the hottest thing on the streets and almost every teen listened to it, so it drew me. Other than for nostalgic reasons, RZA’s productions on the Wu’s 36th is just mind-boggling and unorthodox, the album changed how the music industry viewed independent music today.

Now, another monumental album is Augustus Pablo’s King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown one of the first truly DUB REGGAE album released in the mid-70’s. The production of Tubby’s still fascinates me to this day, “how can you create those sounds during that time?” Pure genius!!!

The album Survival is Bob Marley at his best as a lyricist and a philosopher. Here, he conveys many

of his Rastafari views and ideologies. This album marks him as not just a mere entertainer and musician but a visionary and social thinker. The last is Natty Dread, it was the first album that made me fall in love with reggae more and push me to explore the genre and culture.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?Hmm, believe it or not Ras Muhamad bought a Lil Wayne album. It was his 1999’s Tha Block is Hot & such terrible album it was. I bought it second-hand in NYC for less than $5 but I tried to re-sell it and couldn’t get more than 25 cents for it. Hahaha.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? It’s kind of difficult to think of who I want to be reincarnated as if that person is born in the future instead of the past. Surely, I’d love to be reincarnated as a reggae artist born in Jamaica

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy?“Pram Melawan!” it’s a collection of Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s interviews post-Soeharto era. I give this book a 10 since you really get a feeling of what Bung Pram’s personality is really about. A person that loves his nation, literature, culture and full of ideas. I also love his sometimes sarcastic and tongue-in-cheek comments about many social issues. Some do come off a bit harsh but hey, that’s Bung Pram.

What new movie should people see? Why?Haven’t really seen a new movie lately that I can recommend, the most recent is “Real Steel”... it’s O.K. It’s reminiscent of Sly Stone’s “Over the Top” movie about arm-wrestling and father-son relationships. “Real Steel” is exactly that... “an estranged father winning the affection of his son” except with robotics ala “Blade Runner”.

What song do you choose to start your weekend?Haha, any reggae song... Hmmm maybe LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” haha just kidding. But hmmm, even though it is a guilty pleasure... shhhh don’t tell anyone!

And song/album you choose to end your weekendStill... REGGAE. POSITIVE VIBRATION EVERY TIME!!!

Here's one brand new band people should watch: Fever To Tell. Formed in early 2010 in Jakarta the group with unique formation, four women and one man, has received praise for their dynamic live performance.

Mixing Riot Grrrl 90's rock—think Bikini Kill—and add 80's new wave to its element, their first single "Fight Night" gained huge attention from the indie scene and music journalists. Trax FM and OZ Radio Jakarta have played it quite intensively. It's also used as the main theme song for a short movie, Peron, which is in Belkibolang's compilation. Not to mention one cool radio program, Substereo in OZ Radio Jakarta, named them as "The Chosen Ones".

As new kids on the block, they' have been invited to some prestigious live gigs in the capital city of Indonesia such as Java Rockin' Land, Terusik Traxkustik and The Music Network Festival.

CD reviewWonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

ZEE AVIGhostbird

it’s been a whirlwind ride for the 26-year-old Zee Avi - from YouTube hit to global folk-pop chanteuse,

thanks in no small part to her bubbly personality, laid back optimism and effortlessly beautiful Norah Jones-esque vocal style. Wide-eyed first album ‘Bitter Heart’ (2009) showed undeniable promise, and ‘Ghostbird’ builds on Avi’s infectious vibe, with opener ‘Swell Window’ setting the tone nicely. The gorgeous ‘Milestone Moon’ and sparse ‘Stay in the Clouds’ provide the intimate high points, while ‘The Book of Morris Johnson’ and ‘Roll Your Head in the Sun’ are pure sunshine pop. Ghostbird is an instantly listenable album that will keep summer going long after the rain clouds have moved in.

This electronic DJ duo has been heavily influenced by heavy metal and progressive rock

in their latest album. The music tends to build up with cut up bass lines with a heavy dose of synth distortion. If you’re hungry for a broken electric kind of tune, there are a lot of progressive beats to satisfy you and a lot of digitally voiced crooning. So if you liked D.A.N.C.E or Civilization, there are some similarities, but Justice has definitely moved into a new direction.

We might have to thank the Dutch for the existence of classical music in Indonesia. Back in the early 18th Century, classical music arrived in Batavia to entertain a handful of Dutch plantation owners and officers in elite

social clubs and ballrooms such as De Schouwburg van Batavia (later known as Gedung Kesenian Jakarta).

However, with the passing of time, classical music has blended in and become part of the Indonesian culture. Though this fact is often the root of many arguments including from our ex cultural minister, development of classical music in Indonesia cannot be denied. The 1st orchestra ever to exist in Indonesia: “Bataviasche Philharmonic Orchestra” was established during Dutch colonial times in the early 19th century. Since then, the development of that orchestra has not stop to continue until now.

There have been many Indonesian classical musicians who continuously try to grow the life and existence of orchestra and classical music in this country. From composer like Ismail Marzuki to the late Nusantara Symphony Orchestra conductor Yazeed Djamin were meritorious on bringing classical music in Indonesia to be like now on.

These days, we have two prominent figures who are passionate on developing the orchestra and classical music in Indonesia. They are Avip Priatna and Addie MS.

the Week of avip and addie

Both Avip Priatna and Addie MS are conductors for Jakarta Concert Orchestra (JCO) and Twilite Orchestra (TO). They started their career as conductors 20 years ago. Avip Priatna marked his journey as the conductor of the Universitas Katolik Parahyangan student’s choir where he performed Mozart’s renowned Requiem in 1991; while Addie MS, together with businessman Indra Usmansjah Bakrie and Oddie Agam started Twilite Orchestra also in this same year.

Perhaps Indonesia recognizes Avip Priatna more in the vocal field, as he is a great vocal choir conductor. Over the years, he has led his choir, the Batavia Madrigal Singers to win many international awards around the world including the latest contest at Torrevieja, Spain this year where they received four prestigious awards. But aside from choir conducting, Avip also is known for his expertise in conducting the Jakarta Concert Orchestra or JCO. Established in 2002, the orchestra was known as the Jakarta Chamber Orchestra before changing into the Jakarta Concert Orchestra recently. It is his goal to bring symphonies, both vocal and music closer to the public.

This year, to celebrate Avip Priatna 20 year career in Indonesian classical music, he is planning to perform a concert called “The Symphony of My Life” on December 3rd at Aula Simfonia Jakarta. In this grand concert, he shall perform three monumental works that are dedicated to the Jakarta Concert

Orchestra, Batavial Madrigal Singers and the Unika Parahyangan Choir. Presenting a fantastic program including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and Poulenc’s Gloria; this concert will also have renowned soprano from Komische Opera Berlin, Germany, Bettina Jensen.

Avip Priatna and Addie MS might share the same classical music, but they are very different in terms of musicality direction. Avip is focusing more on serious classical music, where Addie MS with his Twilite Orchestra is more liberal. Twilite Orchestra was created as a pop orchestra where they are not only play classical music but also movie soundtracks, musicals, pop music to even re-arranged folk songs.

Like other successful pops orchestra conductors in the world such as Paul Mauriat, Arthur Fiedler and John Williams; Addie MS has also been successful in bringing classical music closer to the public. He went to schools and universities with the orchestra to introduce classical music. Addie has also created annual concerts for students and public that started in 2000 and are known as Musicademia which are still continuing till now.

He will return with the Twilite Orchestra this coming December 7th to give us the great joy of Christmas songs. Expect to see a heart-warming performance from traditional Christmas carols to popular songs performed by stellar singers such as famous pop diva, Rossa, baritone, Daniel Kristianto and TV sensation soprano, Putri Ayu. The Twilite Orchestra will also have a guest star from Australia, renowned tenor James Egglestone,

These concerts are surely a rare treat… it is not everyday we can see 2 great Indonesian conductors who started their career on the same year and now performing in the same week.

by all accounts, Epicentrum at Rasuna has become one of Jakarta’s new hip hangout places. Quite a

number of concerts have been held here, many featured international artists. But the restaurants here are also pulling in the crowds. And Alex’s Pizza E Pasta is no exception. Opened only about one month ago, this casual establishment has a neighborhood Italian trattoria look about it.

Young entrepreneur Alex Chandra returned to Indonesia in 2008 after two years of culinary study at Le Cordon Bleu institution in London and trained from the most revered maestro chefs, Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White.

As a natural expression of his heart and passion, Alex, together with restaurant conceptor Gil D’Harcour, have created a restaurant that takes guests on a journey to Italy, in the center of Jakarta. Checkered tiles were laid to give a certain warm character. Vintage pictures of Italy

hung on the wall and nicely accented by vintage books, phones, even irons. And diners can watch as classic Italian dishes are expertly prepared at the energetic open kitchen.

You can sit inside this cozy eatery, or on the patio while enjoying a nice balmy evening. And nowadays is the best time of year in Jakarta. Enjoy it while you can, folks! Plus, you don’t have to worry about the street noise or pollution. A family group or friends will feel as comfortable here as a couple of lovers. Get a glass or bottle of vino from the thoughtful wine list to get into the mood, why don’t you?

When we visited Alex’s Pizza E Pasta, we decided not to start with the usual appetizers. Instead, the lure of pizza was too great to resist. The Pizza Quattro Di Carne (83k) was our choice; salami, pepperoni, spiced beef, smoked beef, mozzarella cheese smothered with barbecue sauce. The thin crusted pizza was baked inside a wood-fired oven which only brought out its lovely authenticity. The pizza was devoured in no time flat.

The mains feature all the best Italian favorites. These dishes are elegantly presented here at Alex’s. There are many to choose from but a couple really stood out. First up is the Lasagne Della Nonna (55k). There’s just something about classic beef lasagna that brings you a feeling of comfort.

Next is the Ravioli di Aragosta (99k); ravioli pasta filled with lobster and served in its jus. This one is

simply exquisite! No wonder it has become a firm favorite among Alex’s patrons.

The Chocolato di Lava and the Tiramisu (40k, respectively) are perfect ways to finish your Italian culinary trip. But do try some of the creative concoctions from Alex’s bar. For mocktails, try the refreshing Sexy Berry (fresh strawberry, strawberry juice, strawberry puree, cranberry juice, and orange juice), Blue Diamond (Blue Curaçao Monin, lychee juice, and Sprite), or Shrek (pineapple juice, Blue Curaçao Monin, and raspberry Monin). These mocktails are priced at 28k, respectively.

As for their signature cocktails, which are priced at 65k each, the Bianca (Malibu rum, melon, pineapple juice, with a dash of sweet and sour), ChocoRita (vodka, Kahlua, Baileys), or The Italian Job (gin, vodka, rum, tequila, orange liquor, Sprite, and honey) are all excellent choices. Salute!

Alex’s Pizze e Pasta is a great new Italian place that could become the next big thing in the capital.

Dark colored wood dominates the interior. With one and a half floors of dining space, the place is quite spacious, but it still maintains a warm atmosphere. A small stage is set for musical entertainment, with live acoustic bands playing on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, followed by a DJ set afterwards.

We started our meal with the Salmon Carpaccio (46k); smooth, sliced smoked salmon, served with mixed lettuce and balsamic dressing. It’s fresh, light, and a perfect way to move onto the main course.

We opted for the Alaska Short Ribs (132k); beef short ribs generously doused with a tangy homemade barbeque sauce. Simple and effective, right? But add the surprisingly tasty apple caramel on a bed of freshly baked focaccia bread, and this is one dish that is highly recommended.

Other carnivores’ delights here are the Original Cowboy Steak (162k) - aged Premium beef with Jack Daniels sauce, and the Dallas Burger (66k) - Wagyu beef patty, Swiss cheese, and barbequed mushroom.

Here at Velpa, there are several types of home made sauces available to go with your mouth watering meat dishes. Take a pick from the barbeque sauce, cream pepper sauce, mushroom sauce, Jack Daniels sauce, red wine sauce, vealju sauce, and brown mustard sauce. There’s definitely something for everyone!

Aside from the wine, the bar is ready to serve your favorite tipple. And they do have some inventive cocktail creations. Velpa has no less than six kinds of martini drinks (95k each), but the signature cocktails are the ones drawing the crowd. You should go for the Irish Tiramisu (100k); a sweet blend of Bailey’s, espresso coffee, vanilla ice cream, vanilla Monin, mascarpone. The refreshing but potent Citrus Berry Collins (95k) also has a lot of fans; this mixture of Absolut Citron, Chambord, fresh lime, fresh raspberry, raspberry jam, and cranberry juice has been getting a lot of orders.

Some useful information: the Happy Hour at Velpa is from 3 – 7 pm, where it’s buy 1 get 1 free Heineken

beer and selected cocktails (Citrus Berry Collins, Mores, and Velpa Charm). And after 7pm you can enjoy 20% discount on cocktails, and also get three bottles of Heineken for Rp 100,000 nett.

Next time you’re in South Jakarta, make sure Velpa is your destination for delicious dishes, delectable drinks, and even some delightful deals. See ya there!

The Biggest STanding ApplAuse in JakarTa FaShion Week 2012 for obin

Style

061 beatmag.com

“Catwalk Moment” by Bin House is among the most anticipated shows in Jakarta Fashion Week 2012 and for a reason. First, it was because Josephine Werratie Komara better known as Obin has become a legendary designer of Indonesian traditional textile. Her creations are sought by collectors and just about anyone who appreciates the art and craftsmanship of Indonesian textile. Bin House itself has been well established for 39 years. Another reason, Obin hasn’t held a fashion show for a long time, her last show was in 2003!

According to the Jakarta Fashion Week committee at the press conference, it took them a year to ask Obin to join Jakarta Fashion Week 2012. For the previous fashion weeks, the committee had already asked Obin to join but she never made it. Obin explained that she works really slow because all her work is done manually by hand, from spinning the thread, weaving the cloth and so on. It takes several months just to finish a single piece of Obin’s creations. So, this fashion show is really something to celebrate. I even witnessed that at the end of the show, Obin gained the loudest and biggest standing applause among all shows I watched at JFW 2012

Obin explained that her fashion show was a “visual report of what she has been working on from 2004 – 2011″, showcasing her creations she has produced over the past 8 years. There were about 100 pieces of clothing and apparel that created 48 looks in the show. There wasn’t any specific theme or color palette that connected them all, Obin said that she was just doing what she liked. Tenun and batik dominated the collection, but the special one was batik on cashmere since Obin is the first and only designer who applies the technique. Actually, it’s her husband who has been experimenting for 14 years to create batik on cashmere. It wasn’t easy because cashmere is a material that cannot stand extreme heat and making batik needs heated wax.

Rizka - editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & Beauty with Attitude

It was one of the most anticipated shows at Jakarta Fashion Week

2012 for me. I had high expectations for Oscar Lawata because his collection last year was really exceptional. And this year he was collaborating with the British Milliner Justin Smith who created some of the most interesting hats you have ever seen. Oscar and Justin met last year where they began to talk of collaboration. They did extensive research before they finally came up with the idea for a collaboration. Justin had made a few visits to Indonesia and traveled to Yogyakarta and Borneo for his research with Oscar. We already had some inside info from Oscar on what the collection was going to be like, which made us even more excited. Just as Justin had said in an interview recently, it would be interesting to see how hats that are a very British thing could be translated into something that could be acceptable to the Indonesian market. Especially knowing that Oscar’s collection will certainly touch on traditional traits.

I heard the mentioning of ‘straw hats’ being one of the biggest inspirations for Justin,

but I really don’t see how that would fit in with the overall picture of Oscar’s high fashion collection. Knowing that both of them visited Borneo, and of course our glimpse of last year’s collection, I still thought that Oscar’s collection would revolve around weave again.

Boy, was I wrong! The show opened with a bang with a series of gorgeous dresses made from Javanese batik. When I say batik dresses and you’re thinking something along the line of what you see in a bazaar. You’d be certainly very wrong. These were batik items used in a way you’d never seen before. It was so cleverly done with little touches here and there. There are so many attire done with batik nowadays, but they were all so over the top and screamed ‘We have to appreciate this piece, just because it’s made from batik!’ I have yet to see a creation that actually uses batik and actually looks very NOW! Oscar truly reincarnated batik – and also other traditional textiles used that night – to a presentable modern form of clothing.

Oscar didn’t only use batik in this collection but also

carefully curated handmade pieces of ikat from Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Samba, Flores, and islands in South East Nusa and Maluku. They were then translated to modern forms through his signature contemporary cutting that you can see immediately from the shapes of clothes that is somehow very Oscar.

The best part of all is that the collaboration truly worked with the head pieces created by Justin Smith and they – if I may borrow his favourite word – ‘organically’ blended into Oscar’s clothes. They didn’t look as if they were created by two different designers at all. Although I’m excited seeing all the head pieces, which I’m dying to have, I still wonder where I would use them – but letting these pieces take the center stage also means we didn’t get to see the to-die-for accessories like from Oscar’s show last year.

But the best always comes last, don’t you agree? The minimalist pieces in black with just a strip of traditional textile were just making us gawk at it crazily! We want them all!

The Earth in Our Hands explores the contribution of the sciences to sustainable development. This interactive exhibition shows that, confronted with the dangers facing our planet and the people who live on it, research can be a source of solutions that are socially equitable, ecologically sustainable, and economically viable. Through demonstrations and bilingual descriptive panels, The Earth in Our Hands helps visitors understand the urgency of the situation. While describing some of the problems facing the Earth, the exhibition offers a number of perspectives on solutions available to overcome the environmental, economic and social challenges of our times.November 22 - December 14, 2011

At the end of September 2010, Jumaldi Alfi started his artist residency program at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI), an institution that actively encourages new

practices in contemporary art, especially in print and papermaking techniques. Through the support of equipment, technology, and outstanding technical skills provided by the experts at STPI studio, Alfi had the great opportunity to explore a wide range of possibilities, transforming the visual compositions he has created in his paintings into prints.

The opportunity to take advantage of the various printmaking possibilities at the STPI has encouraged Alfi to record a range of visual elements and themes he had hitherto expressed in his paintings. While the series Never Ending Lesson seems to reveal Alfi’s efforts to move toward fresh themes and visual approaches; his print works

constitute an effort to document his aesthetic journey, serving as a record of his past artistic achievement.

Alfi presents this in layers of images and forms, colors and textures, perfectly recorded on the paper surface, well absorbed into its fibers. The layers become never-ending if we realize that the various visual elements and themes that have been so far present in his paintings are also layers and braiding of memories, woven recollections, and reminiscences. The reflections and thoughts of an artist, they embody a series of psycho-biographical traces about the artist’s life experience. Suffice to say that the elements that are directly related to memories form the leitmotif that forms the basis of Alfi’s works.

A caveat must immediately be added: memories are not synonymous with nostalgia for Alfi. While nostalgia is the energy that pulls one into the vortex of the past, Alfi‘s memories and recollections provide the energy that propels and drives him to keep moving in the present while welcoming the future. It is the memories and recollections that come to him in an intense manner, and put him in the midst of the tension between trying to remember and trying to forget, between the meditative calmness and the mind’s distress, between emotional reflections and the jolt of rational awareness, all ultimately pouring into his works. Layered and overlapping ambiguities become the norm in Alfi’s works.

‘Wellingdon Beauty’ Solo ExhibitionAdi Gunawan

utu Adi Gunawan is involved in the euphoria of animal signification. His cultural background, growing up amid agrarian society, brought him very close

to animals. This cultural position is in fact the aspect that enabled him to visualize motions, gestures, characters and expressions of animals eloquently. Gunawan really masters how to talk about animals. Through the language close to the characteristics of metaphors, metonymies and equivalents, Putu Adi Gunawan softly constructs the meaning in his artworks.

Through his sculptures, he puts forth the issue of the relationship between animals and humans. On the surface, it seems like a simple matter, but at a deeper level, the relationship between the two beings is not as simple as one imagines. Some reasons are worth mentioning here. First, the relationship between animals and humans, has dependencies in many aspects. Second, animals are often only positioned as something for consumption according to human production needs. Third, in many aspects animals are often the figuration of man’s bad characteristics, such as stupidity, dumbness, greed, naughtiness, filth, sloth, etc; or the good ones, such as strength, agility, beauty, cheerfulness, etc. In short, the variety of animal signification has its own cultural space. For every place and every moment, the meanings vary. Thinkers, politicians

at a deeper level, the relationship between the two beings is not as simple as one imagines

and artists are the people who often produce the meanings of animals.

The solo exhibition is entitled “Willingdon Beauty”. It is named after the pig character in Orwell’s story. Despite not all Putu Adi Gunawan’s subjects are pigs, but rather more of Willingdon Beauty’s

persona, it is not surprising that the exhibition has the title “Willingdon Beauty”.

Beyond that, a lot of meaning can still be constructed by the appreciators of Putu Adi Gunawan’s works. The flexibility of interpretation and signification are fully the appreciators’ autonomy. This essay is aimed to build meaning out of Putu Adi Gunawan’s works. Of course the limitation of meaningful possibilities for the exhibition appreciators is unintentional. “This essay, or the meanings

I build, is only an explanation for myself alone,” says the artist and continues, “Whether in the future any of the exhibition viewers drift to the meanings I have built, I believe, it would only be a coincidence. It just so happens that we have the same horizon of hope.”

Scissor Sisters to Perform in BaliNew York glam rock/pop rock band and billboard chart toppers the Scissor Sisters are due to perform in Bali on January 7, 2012. The band describe themselves to have been “spawned by the scuzzy, gay nightlife scene of New York” and are known for their extravagantly fabulous stage performances. The band came to prominence with their disco remake of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ in 2003, and have had a number of hit tracks including “Laura”, “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing “, “Take Your Mama”, “Mary” and “Filthy/Gorgeous”. Band members consist of Jake Shears and Ana Matronic as vocalists, Del Marquis as lead guitar/bassist Babydaddy as multi instrumentalist, and Randy Real on drums. Lead singer Jake Shears is known to put on lively performances, greatly influenced by his previous vocation… stripping. In 2004, Bono of U2 said that the Scissor Sisters were “the best pop group in the world”. They are due to play at the Hard Rock Bali after performing in Hong Kong and Singapore.

reviewreviewKetupat

used to hate them. You know the type, foreign ‘Indo foodies’ complaining that “oooo this sambal isn’t spicy enough”, or purposely going out to find a bowl

of local rujak. “Idiots,” I’d think, before disappearing off to the nearest sandwich shop. “Indonesia has given us the nasi and the mie goreng, and that’s about it”.

Then something inevitable happened. I discovered beef rendang. And sambal matah. And ayam betutu. And kerupuk. And… well, you get the point. As the old saying goes, ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’, and now it’s me guzzling up the extra sambal or getting genuinely excited about a few sticks of sate kambing (look it up).

There are plenty of places, for the unenlightened to the seasoned Indo food veteran, dotted around town, but Ketupat restaurant on Jl. Dewi Sri has to be the granddaddy of them all, offering authentic Indonesian specialties from all over the archipelago – from Lombok to Kalimantan, Java to Sulawesi and beyond – it’s all here and it’s all properly enak.

Strolling in through the exquisite wooden joglo pavilion of Ketupat we’re warmly greeted by the smiley waiter. Clearly anticipating that we’re not just here for the spring rolls, he shows us over to one of the larger tables out back next to the pool and leaves us to peruse the enormous menus over a couple of refreshing ice teas. Appetizers, soups,

noodles, sate, seafood, duck, curries, stir fries – the choices are all a little bewildering (mainly because I want to eat it all), so we decide to go for maximum assortment. Tapas, Indonesian style.

First up was a plate of the fish and tofu ‘perkedel’ cakes, along with the insanely morish crunchy Javanese style peanut crackers and the tuna and basil ‘panada’ puffs (all 26k) from the starter list. Next up, the table filling nasi kuning (66k) arrives, featuring an assortment of tender beef rendang, crunchy tempe, corn fritters and plenty more tucked around the generous volcano of fragrant yellow rice in the centre. Keen to sample a few more different tastes, we get stuck in to a bowl of tangy sour mango infused sambal tappa (17k) on the side, as well as a stick or two of the Balinese specialty sate lilit tuna (83k), which in this case is wrapped around a lemongrass stalk and presented on a small clay barbeque.

The feast draws to a close with a nibble of some coconut ice cream and a few slices of palate cleansing watermelon, and we leave Ketupat full

to the brim and keen to return and sample some of the other delicacies. For now, you can keep your sandwich shops; I know where I’m heading for lunch tomorrow.

Zee Avi

Great acoustic shows can be few and far between on the island and we were

pretty excited about seeing this one after writing last edition’s Here Now. It wasn’t quite a sunset show. The band didn’t hit the stage until about nine but thankfully David J was on hand to spin a little hip hop for us. Once Zee Avi did hit the stage, her soulful Norah Jones-esque voice totally captivated the audience. Combine that with the bands broad use of instrumentation, including the sitar, made for a very esoteric experience. Some of Avi’s solo performances with minimal band support let her voice shine through and were the most memorable of her set. If you missed out, download her songs, get an ipod, sit back at hu’u bar one sunset and enjoy.

Secret Valuable (Dj Adhele Robless & Princes Joanna)

Bringing a touch of class to the show these two female DJs hit Bali last week. DJ Adhele and Princes Joanna went back to

back on the decks and the crowd went wild as soon as they hit their mix. They were working the decks like crazy and the crowd was moving in close. Princes Joanna was down on the dance floor with the crowd at one stage and the beats kept on cranking till late with the crowd getting right into it till the finale.

Beat Thiefs

The BeatThiefs descended upon Sky Garden, the island’s only mega club, and did what the BeatThiefs do best—they tore the house

down with their mythical DJ skills. The crowds were definitely feeling it and whatever beats the DJs stole, they were definitely distributing it evenly. It was an awesome gig.
