INSIDE This Issue An Impulsive Nature My grandparents’ farm had a pond. Each summer, a family of Canadian geese would take up residence at that pond. For years, this would happen and my grandmother loved when that goose couple would show up. It meant weeks ahead of watching them interact and seeing the little ones develop. I remember her telling stories of how she would watch as those goslings would get a running start and hop into the air, strengthening their wings for an inevitable flight. She loved those geese so much that she would cut corn to feed them throughout their summer stay. It was during this time I learned the protectiveness of motherhood. I still recall the spread wings, the lowered head, and that vicious hissing sound whenever the literal mother goose thought we were too close. It didn’t take long to recognize we were only allowed within a certain distance. Food or no food, we weren’t getting near her babies. In this goose mom existed an innate instinct to protect her young from anything she perceived as a potential threat. Those goslings followed her everywhere. Through the reaction from that goose, I learned that a mother’s care and protection is an attribute instilled throughout creation. This is a reaction seen in all of life, not just in a goose protecting her young. There is a maternal impulse that drives caring mothers to traverse distance and go beyond normal limits in order to care for their children. It’s a drive and motivation seen in the mothers who support, encourage, protect, nurture, and love their families. It is an example of the spirit of our loving God dwelling within. If we truly believe that God is manifest in all of creation, then the reaction of a goose protecting her children reminds us of this maternal instinct that is made all the more clear through the examples of those women who serve as mothers in our lives. Whether it is our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, or friend, this month offers us an opportunity to honor and celebrate those women who embrace that maternal impulse within. To all those wonderful ladies who provide that concern and care to others, who offer that nurture and compassion, those women who continue to protect and provide leadership, who continue to show us what it truly means to be a mother, whether your children are biological or not, to all of you who honor our Creator in the way you embrace that maternal impulse, may you enjoy a wonderful time of celebration this month with those you consider to be your closest family. INSIDE This Issue

An Impulsive Nature

My grandparents’ farm had a pond.

Youth News

Upcoming Events

May 19th - Youth Sunday May 29th - Mission’s Night

DNOW Recently, the YAK (youth at Knightdale) participated with two other churches in a DNOW conference. There were close to 100 people there. We had 4 youth go. This might seem disheartening at first. However, God showed us throughout the conference that He can do much with a few willing people. We were a much more tight knit group than the other churches had opportunity for. We got to do everything together. God was so good to us during our time. We began Friday night by sitting down, watching a video, and being ushered into an hour of prayer. This all happened without even hearing from any "leaders." The point of this was to begin the weekend by connecting with God. It was powerful. There were a dozen prayer stations with verses, things to

pray for, and even actions to take that represented what God has done for us in Jesus. It was a very cool time and made me want to do something like it with our youth. We then sang praise to God and went home. The next day was focused on ministering to the needy. We heard from a lady who moved her family into a slum in Jackson, Mississippi. She testified about how God had done amazing things through her because she showed a little faith. After lunch we were going out to the homeless to minister. Before we left the pastors of each church came to wash the feet of the youth. A local pastor who works with the homeless spoke to us. He also brought one of his friends who used to be homeless. She had her life changed by the grace of God. She encouraged us to reach out with hope to people who have little. We all left a little encouraged and still a lot nervous. We were going to wash the feet of homeless people!Little to our knowledge, God had gone before us to set up a block party where homeless had gathered to be fed, hear music, and receive

clothing. A pastor who was already there announced what we were doing and away we went. It was truly a miracle because it was the most natural thing in the world. In fact, people asked us to wash their feet. Two of us even had a somewhat difficult time finding someone because so many others had rushed ahead! God is truly amazing. While this was probably the highlight of our time together we had lots of time during the weekend to bond, pray, and share life together. It was a wonderful time together. Bruce Lee or Char Le? Charley Maynard had a karate competition last weekend. He did some wicked moves with a staff. (Don't mess with him if you see him holding it!) He also gave a pretty impressive performance. Impressive enough to earn him second place in his division. Way to go, Charley!
